>pic related haven't talked to each other since 2019, 4 years before Roiland got fired
What the fuck went so wrong between these two? I don't think I've seen a creative partnership end this quickly
What was going on behind the scenes?

Cuckoldry maybe.

Dan wanted to hire hot girls in LA to fuck them and Justin wanted to make a cartoon show about aci-fi cliches

everything I've read over the years it sounds that once giant faggot started taking more and more control over things, sex pest just shut down and did the bare minimum doing less and less until he was canceled.

Roiland made up the allegations so he'd have an excuse to finally get away from harmon

Fate dealt the world a really REALLY weird fucking blow by having Roiland be the one that is ruined over scandal...and not Harmon. No one could have seen that shit coming.

If anything people were just expecting the Harmon scandal to blow up at some point. No one knew just when or how big of an event it was going to be.

It's more that he's clearly the lesser of the two evils next to Harmon. Every single thing I learn about Dan Harmon makes him sound like the most unpleasant person on Earth.

>Is it just because he's a white guy who got cancelled?
Got it in one.
Plus, I think there is this weird idea that, if he had taken more control, the show would somehow be more the thing that people here want. Which I don't buy, if the opposite has happened and Roiland was still here and Harmon gone, people would complain that Harmon was the one that gave the show SOVL and Roiland is too cringe and annoying. No one is ever happy with anything.
>>
>>154716320
Because the first two seasons are better than the rest of the show, and that's when he was most involved. People who say "the show got better after Roiland got fired" are idiots who think Roiland was still heavily involved in the show by Season 6.
>>
>>154715878
Harmon legit considered Roiland his subordinate and not equal. Their partnership imploded over Solar Opposites, which Roiland did by himself and didn't tell Harmon about until it came out during a joint interview and Harmon got pissed.
>>
>>154715888
Harmon is a cuckold fetishist though so that would be a positive for him.
>>
>>154716320
He's a hollywood outsider who started on the internet, and yeah is a white guy, so a lot of never-made-it wanna-be creators latch onto him.
>>
>>154716252
The most frustrating thing about MeToo was that Harmon somehow came out of it completely unscathed. The shit he pulled was about as bad as you can get without actually physically assaulting anyone. Crazy that he's not flipping burgers somewhere
>>
>>154715878
I vaguely remember an interview after Roiland got canned where Harmon says that he brought in a lot writers with the idea that it would make the show better or more professional, and he thinks that might've made Roiland feel pushed to the side.

If you look at this interview >>154715986 then it does seem likely that Harmon, being a more experienced showrunner, considered himself to be the man in charge. Roiland was upset either because he was expecting an equal partnership or simply because he hated the way Dan ran things, which is why he pursued projects that he could call his own. I'm not too sympathetic, though, considering the allegations against him.
>>
Here is a question that nobody has been able to answer: Justin was the co-creator and executive producer on the show and theoretically had more power and creative control than any writer working under him. He was the face of the show (other VAs be damned) and the fans would have his side 100% of the time no questions asked. He had clout.

If he wasn't happy (and clearly wasn't preoccupied with other revenue streams like NFTs, merch sales, and VR games) then why didn't he say anything or rally people against evil asshole Dan Harmon instead of just pulling back, not giving a shit, doing the voices at his house, drinking all day, and letting the money roll in while banging porn stars and fucking around in VR?
>>
>>154715878
They still follow each other on social media. Not sure if that means anything, though.

You’re just making things up. Roiland started at Channel 101 which was a monthly live screening event in LA where people made short episodes and the audience would vote on which ones got “renewed”. That’s where he made doc and Marty, house of cosby’s, etc.

Harmon basically made Roiland famous via Channel 101 and was already pulling away from him with stuff like Soar Opposites. So he basically was reluctant to fight over R&M, especially since it was an easy paycheck that could fund Roland's coffers so he could work on his other projects, especially since Harmon himself made it clear that R&M, more than Community (why by the early 2020s had vanished from syndication and who's DVDs were out of print), was his meal ticket that he planned on whoring out to keep being filthy rich and

Dan Harmon still gets special treatment from Hollywood execs and can get any new project greenlit without breaking a sweat, including a Rick and Morty spin-off series.

Justin Roiland still gets executive producer credit (and likely compensation) up to at least Season 10, along with residuals for those first six seasons in which he voice-acted characters.
>>
>>154719154
The allegations that he physically assaulted a girlfriend were proven in court to be false. He was cleared of that.

However another allegation surfaced that Roiland texted a minor that once she became of age they should have sex. He left shortly after that. Before Roiland was basically kicked out of the production studio he ran around the place with nerf guns and remote control vehicles and brought his pornstar girlfriends into the office and showed them off whatever the hell that implies. Basically nothing was done to Roiland until the texts appeared.

The text allegations had to be real because they were the only thing that actually removed Roiland. The lawyers would have questioned Roiland and determined that everything the girl said was true probably because the texts were on Roiland's phone. Unlike the physical assault charges there was no fucking way the lawyers could see Roiland getting away with those allegations once this girl sues and discovery seizes those texts. The studio gave Roiland a chance to quietly leave and Roiland smartly took it. The studio probably settled quietly with the girl.

Like shit, we don't need a courtroom ruling to know that the guy who parades pornstars around the office and fought the entire writing room for Morty to get almost-raped by King Jellybean probably doesn't have the sense to not text a minor especially when it's that specific accusation that actually got him fired. Contracts aren't worded with three-strikes and you're out, they're worded with lines you don't cross and obviously those texts crossed a line.
>>
The narrative flattened into a misunderstood innocent genius artist vs the fat evil tyrant thing when in reality they were two rapist asshole drunks with mental problems who couldn't stop arguing with each other and held up production for years at a time

Source on that? First I've heard of there being any internal controversy over it. Unironically the moment I fell in love with the series, giving the first hint that Rick gives a slight fuck (though maybe that aspect of it was the other writers making it work, for all I know)
>>
>>154721972
I don't have the source. It was probably one of the huge articles detailing Justin's exit. The writing room fought Roiland because they argued it had no point and we just have to assume Roiland was just a creepy piece of shit because if you look at the early Rick and Morty that Roiland made (and Harmon fell in love with like a creepy fuck himself) it was fucking disgusting. Ultimately the writing room allowed it but on the condition that King Jellybean is killed, which happens at the end. I agree it was one of the big moments I fell in love with the show. You could say it was edgy but it demonstrated that Rick's life was horrifically dangerous including in the cute fantasy land.

I think the writing room was correct in pointing out the assault had no narrative value, it was just a horrible thing to happen. I also think Roiland's ideas are fucked up and he had no good reason to want it. I don't think either of them understood that the scene did a lot of work worldbuilding the show but it ultimately was a good thing.
>>
>>154716261
Yeah he sexually harrassed a writer while on Community and his guilt caused him to make half the writing staff for Rick and Morty female in season 3.
>>
>>154721797
>The allegations that he physically assaulted a girlfriend were proven in court to be false. He was cleared of that.
Feel free to prove me wrong, but if I recall correctly, he never went to court, nothing was proven. The DA chose not to prosecute, which could mean any number of things.
>>
>>154722287
Honestly, I don't know how to interpret the line, "Roiland was later cleared of the charges due to insufficient evidence".

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/justin-roiland-animation-empire-implosion-rick-and-morty-1235319366/

The guy was arrested, charged, put in jail, got out on bail. He pleaded not guilty. I have to assume that when you get to the point of entering a plea you are literally standing inside a courtroom. But you're right, nothing was proven false I was wrong about that. The charges got thrown out for lack of evidence which isn't proving anything.

>>
>>154722388
I mean NTA but there's a reason they say 'not guilty' rather than 'innocent.' They're not there to prove he didn't do it, they just couldn't sufficiently prove he did, that could mean anything
>>
>>154722463

But it sounds like he's coming back for season 10
>>
>>154722467
Yeah I also think my misunderstanding is that charging a person comes with having a lot of evidence to justify the charge. But I think how it works is that you have to charge a person within 24 hours to hold them in jail longer than that. You don't necessarily need enough evidence to prove guilt in court you just need enough evidence to justify a charge. And you fight the charge in court with the full breadth of evidence.
>>
>>154716252
>Fate dealt the world a really REALLY weird fucking blow by having Roiland be the one that is ruined over scandal...and not Harmon.
Harmon apologized for his wrongdoings and his accuser accepted his apology privately and publicly. He loves to remind everyone of how much of a terrible person he is and apologizing for it.
Roiland never apologized for his actions, not the abuse allegations, his conduct at work, or for clearly being into underage girls and admitting it repeatedly on video (either as a joke or seriously). You can be a terrible person or hard to work with, but not both. If Justin stopped gooning, apologized and was less of an asshole to everyone he could have been fine.

>>154722074
You might be the first person I've seen to argue the King Jellybean assault was unnecessary.
I agree with >>154721972 desu. When I first saw the scene it was fucked up and seemingly came out of nowhere, sure, but it completely flipped my preconceived ideas about what Rick and Morty and made me realize the show was something different than your standard adult cartoon slop. Rick getting so angry that' he'd kill Jellybean afterwards really stuck with me.
Ironically I remember it being one of the few times Justin apologized after it aired because it made people upset and he said he wasn't trying to do so.

>>154715878
Roiland is an ODD manchild that either just annoyed the shit out of Harmon or talked too much shit or pissed off someone close to Harmon with his antics.

>>
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/justin-roiland-animation-empire-implosion-rick-and-morty-1235319366/
But seriously, another thing from that big article after he left that always bugged me
>Other show sources say he’d derail pitches and interrupt with sophomoric non sequiturs like, “What if his brains were on the outside?” It reached a point where multiple sources say it was easier when Roiland wasn’t in the room.
Like you can tell early on he probably threw out those sorts of ideas and they'd get put in the show, while later on it seems he was blown off. The idea of complaining about things being "sophomoric" shows they had a radically different idea of what the show should be compare to the first couple seasons.

It feels like a story with two sides, I can see it being the case that Justin was unfairly getting ignored/sidelined on direction of the show he co-created. Can't blame him for checking out after a while if that's how it was.
>>
>>154722723
All stories have two sides, but in this one the sides are "asshole trying to be professional and make a show" and "asshole that got bored with making a show and just wants to fuck around"
>>
>>154722575
I'm putting myself in the writing room's shoes and understanding that if such a scene was presented to me I would think it was unnecessary, which is why I don't work in this sort of thing because I would be bad at it.

As a person in the audience I thought the scene was amazing and like you and the other guy it was a good thing that it was so fucked up because it gave a sense that the show was going to be serious about all the awful shit that could happen in the universe. I just don't think the writing room or Roiland thought at the time that the show needed this edge to be a serious product - both the writing room and Roiland did not predict the scene was what it was. I think Roiland did a disservice to the scene by apologizing for it; he should have embraced it as making Rick and Morty a multiverse that is rather dark and that Rick was an inhabitant of that multiverse and Morty having a horrific awakening to that world from meeting King Jellybean. I think Roiland apologizing for the scene means he did not understand upon creating the scene that the scene gave Rick and Morty artistic legitimacy - he did it to fuck around, which is what the writing room saw as well.
>>
>>154722749

Fair enough, I'm just emphasizing that it's not necessarily as simple as it seems.
> in this one the sides are "asshole trying to be professional and make a show" and "asshole that got bored with making a show and just wants to fuck around"
Nah, it's deeper than that. It almost always is deeper than simplified narratives like that. Consider that there may be good reasons behind the scenes that he get bored/lost interest in making the show.

It's just kind of a skill mismatch issue. A show gets written and pitched by someone whose skills are writing and maybe boarding, and then when it's greenlit suddenly this weirdo artist writer is expected to manage an entire building's worth of people, approve payroll, sit for legal on every script and scene, sit for the edit, etc., etc. on a show that's going to stay very much the same for as long as is possible.

Of course an ADHD punk-animator is going to fail on that setting.

My interpretation is the issue was less Roiland contributing 'sophomoric non-sequiturs' and more him just not being of much help in breaking stories and forming proper 3-act structures for episodes they would have to actually draft up and pitch to the executives.

Roiland's shtick might've been cute during those first two seasons when Adult Swim had lower expectations and fewer notes to answer to as well as more lax deadlines, but once the 70-episode order went into effect, they had to deliver loads more material in a more timely and organized manner, the opposite of how Roiland likes to work.

Stuff like the Slut Dragons, Sperm Monsters, and Pissmaster show that even under Harmon's rule, everyone still understood they were making a crass primetime adult comedy where anything goes. They just couldn't afford to appease Roiland's stream-of-consciousness class clownery around the studio when it kept derailing the production and making what *should be* a fun job 10x harder.

>Stuff like the Slut Dragons, Sperm Monsters, and Pissmaster show that even under Harmon's rule, everyone still understood they were making a crass primetime adult comedy where anything goes.
I mean they understood it was supposed to be crass comedy sometimes, but that stuff also felt more forced to me than season 1's crass comedy.

Your interpretation is probably fair though, Roiland's style naturally doesn't mesh well with professional production for a major network.

The assault was uncomfortable and went to far but it was the point the show was edgy and needed that as a point for that, the scene is also important for the audience to see Rick understand the world he lives in and actually give him a moment of humanity killing someone we see who genuinely deserved to die. Rick and Morty wouldn’t be the “cultural force” it was without the king jelly bean scene
