Some exec couldn't take normal Mystique with the exposed arms and hips seriously so whatever poor designer tasked with adapting her look compromised with blue areas that at a distance were reminiscent of her typical look.

Romijin in X2 is really quite excellent, she does amazing physical acting and when she's given dialogue she's great at it too. You buy her as someone who doesn't care because she can always hide away from the consequences of what she does.Her scene with Logan is great. You can tell she wants him precisely because he's the only one who's ever left an impression on her she can't shapeshift away, and she can't get over that.
