Murder at the Masquerade!

Comics in this thread:
>X-Men: The Hellfire Murder
>Uncanny X-Men #32
>Wolverine #24
>Moonstar #5
>>
Bump if you're reading.
>>
>”Those who style themselves mutantkind’s defenders claim that a new warden is a sign of change. Progress. But I ask you…what sort of useless leaders would leave that house of horrors standing at all?”
I hope this neither is the X-Office trying to disregard the many valid criticisms of the entire Graymalkin plotline by having a villainous character outright state one of them, nor is meant to imply that Monet has just taken over the warden position of Graymalkin instead of “tearing it down” as she promised to do.

And why did Shaw invite the Head of O*N*E to this? Okay, I can see him inviting the 3K members, but Crimson Commando? Good luck convincing him anything after you just openly stated that about Graymalkin, when he’s one of the few rare cases that actually benefitted from having that be around.
>>
But enough about that, it’s time for the party!
>>
>>154734601
Bumping in hopes Betsy is here without Rachel and they're breaking up
>>
Been rather an interesting set of days for Marvel recently, with Cebulski getting replaced with Wacker as EiC, just as SDCC is about to happen...
>>
>Cyclops was aware that Rogue was planning to take down Graymalkin and let her do it
Would have been nice to know about this a little earlier, instead of now where they retcon in that they had an off-panel discussion about it. But with how dragged out the plotline for that is (to the point that we’re still having to deal with the aftermath of it), I think it would have helped if Rogue got help from Cyclops.
>>
>”Scott and Kwannon knew I’d be in the city, but they’d be pissed to know I’m gate-crashing their little party.”
…but how can Idie be secretly crashing the party without Cyclops and Psylocke knowing, if she was just with them and all the other mutants a few pages ago?
Oh that’s right, it’s because Brevoort fails at basic art error checking. My bad.
>>
>Sinister immediately leaves after realizing this isn’t a real party
Lmao. Either way, this page seems to have been made to acknowledge the events of Inglorious X-Force #4-5, albeit seemingly without Seeley’s being involved in this special at all.
>>
Oh shit, Toad and Hellion are also here. We’re also referencing the events of NYX now?
>>
>”You and I…we’ve waited for an opportunity like this for a long time.”
What kind of opportunity…?
>>
Oh nevermind, they’re just planning to kill Joseph and Astra.
>>
>>154734653
Cheat on Jean again
>>
>>
Temper is meeting up with Ransom again. Now that I think about it, X-Men United doesn't have scenes where they interact with each other.
>>
I guess we’re pairing Emma with Namor again? Also, don’t you already have a girlfriend Kitty?
>>
>>
And then they fucked!
>>
>>
>>154734681
Last we saw, Kitty was ignoring her calls. Should keep it that way.
>>
>>
>>

Oh my god, they killed Shaw!
Seriously though, I think everyone called that Shaw was the “iconic mutant power player” murdered the moment the solicits for this dropped.

>>
>Everyone thinks Emma did it
Sounds reasonable.
>>
>>
>>
>”Did I kill Sebastian Shaw? Today is the first day of me never having to think about him ever again.”
That’s not a “no”, you know…
>>
>Shaw died of breathing in nerve gas
That doesn’t exactly sound like something Emma would do, so I guess she might be innocent?
>>
It’s time for questioning…
>>
>>
>”It was 3K, right? I knew it!”
Hellion please, 3K wouldn’t really gain anything by killing him like that.
>>
>>
>Cyclops and Psylocke can't go through with the assassination anymore
Oh well, I guess we’re going to have to wait till DNX for that to happen…
>>
>>
>>
>The nerve gas came from Shaw’s own security system
Maybe there wasn’t any murderer after all, and it was just the security system fucking up?
>>
>Everyone became so mad about Astra and Joseph being here that they decided to leave
Alright then. See you guys in Adjectiveless X-Men soon?

Also, fun detail I noticed when reading through this: throughout the issue Logan only uses his left claws.

>Mystique and Destiny are creating the Hellfire Brotherhood and using Shaw’s stuff for an organization for mutantkind
>If Logan reveals about them being behind Shaw’s death, they lose control of Shaw’s stuff and everyone is fucked

So this special was just to bring back Destiny and Mystique again to a slightly more major role, after the Mystique solo during FTA was used to temporarily minimize them. Sure…but this pretty much exemplifies the main problem of this era and that’s that the titles are not connected enough for a reveal like this to really work (in my opinion, at least). Like had the events of the Mystique solo genuinely impacted Adjectiveless X-Men and Uncanny X-Men, and not be this comic that the X-Office would ignore until it became a rather essential set-up for AoR, it might have worked better, but I don't know. Let's see where they'll show up next...

The Gala is over. Let's go home.

So was she also in on creating the Hellfire Brotherhood and gaining control of Shaw’s stuff? Wonder how things will turn out for her...
>>
And now for Uncanny X-Men.
>>
Back to our regular schedule. Previously in Uncanny X-Men, the Outliers went out with each other to the school dance, while gun-wielding aliens known as the Nur began invading New Orleans, starting by abducting Nightcrawler and MacKenzie. When the Vig confronted Ransom outside the school to offer him a position in the Thieves Guild, the Brood were suddenly appearing outside the school, with the Nur appearing after them. With their strength and powerful armors, the Nur were able to easily defeat the Vig and resist the attacks of the X-Men until Jubilee blasted their guns against them. But once things calmed down, Mutina showed up and revealed that the Nur were in reality exterminators looking to get rid of a Brood hive - a Brood hive that was right beneath the school!
>>
>>154734623
Jubilee says she needs some cock right away.
>>
>>
>>
>>154734623
So is Wacker replacing Cbulski on those SDCC panels?
>>
>The Nur are targeting MacKenzie
Knowing that the Nur are actually here to exterminate the Brood hive hiding in the city, I wonder if this is actually a hint that MacKenzie has been infested…
>>
>>
>>154734985

Gambit, you alright there?

And now for Wolverine.
>>
Very awkward that the Hellfire Murder (which is mostly written by Ahmed) is released while Wolverine is still in the middle of an arc, but that’s comics for you. Anyways, 2 weeks ago Logan tried to fend off Taskmaster, who had managed to steal Logan’s healing factor with nanites that was connected to the ones in Logan’s blood. Cecilia Reyes came to Logan’s aid and gave him a device which he used to fry Taskmaster’s nanites. Returning back to the hospital Reyes was working in, she tells Logan that his healing factor was still being siphoned by the rogue Dept. H scientist, and together they manage to pin down that he was in Seattle. Traveling alone to the city, Logan confronted the scientist, Dr. Murat Mor. Mor explains that he was trying to save his dying wife by creating a cure using the T-O virus used by Post (that one 90’s X-Villain), but when he tried using it on himself during his experiments, the virus began consuming him from the inside and he used the nanites in Logan’s blood to steal his healing factor in an attempt to counteract the infection, but it only resulted with him not being able to create a cure for his wife and the infection being set to eventually fully consume him. But when Mor tells Logan that killing him would make Logan lose his healing factor permanently and tries to cooperate with him, Logan becomes furious and threatens him to shut down the nanites or else, which causes the T-O virus to react and transforms Mor into a variant of Post…

I guess it was nice to see Silhouette and Finesse in 2026.

For as much of a nostalgia-guy as Brevoort is, it's funny how he's against ever depicting the X-Men as heroes again.

It still feels so strange that Kwannon is behaving just like Betsy used to but Betsy doesn't. I can't recall the last time a writer acknowledged that Betsy spent the better part of her existence as a character as an adrenaline-addicted assassin.
>>
>>154734647
When did Toad get revived?
>>
>>154734872
Betsy's getting a story and cover in that book as well... so I doubt she's going to be handing over the mantle. Unfortunately I have a bad gut feeling that the whole thing is going to be a story celebrating her and Rachel, since we're unlikely to get a story about Betsy just being herself and doing her own thing.

>>154735153
It is often very hard to like the X-men

>>154735402
As I have said many times, his nostalgia is for the fucking 2010s X-Men when Schism was happening and White was ordering writers to make Emma a villain again during the Inhumans push. His "nostalgia" is for literally the second worst period in X-Men history after Cuckoa.

It's less that and more a sop to artists and variant cover junoies. Hickman created the first gala to let the xbook artists create one off new costumes and for mavrl to sell variant covers. It spiked sales as people over ordered for the costume variant covers, so now it's a regular yearly thing

I know the X-Men have always fucked each other but I can't be the only one who doesn't like the masquerade swinger's party thing they have every year now

It only annoys me because more of them didn't sneak away for a quickie. Emma and Namor, and nobody else? I'm disappointed in this crowd.

>>
>>154742949
Also none of the good human villains even did anything. No Hodge, no Creed, no Stryker, no Bastion. Just lame ass Orchis who were designed by Hickman to be red herrings as to who the main villains would be while the Children of Vault would take over. Nimrod had to hard carry when his allies were

Modern DC is trash too because it's a lot of shitty comics explicitly made for gays. Retarded writer who hang on twitter saw a few """"fans""" talk about this shit and though thats what the actual fans want the X-Men story to be. Everything wrong with current X-Men writers can be pinpointed to them listening to the drivel you find Twitter and thinking these people are representative of the fanbase.
>>
>>154743249
Who the fuck else are they gonna fight man? Lucifer?
>>
>>154743240
Agreed. And I saw that as somebody who enjoys reading Uncanny and the Absolutes.
It's odd coming back to X-Men without having read through Krakoa since there's obviously some baggage left over, but things so far are pretty mixed. I don't feel a sense of "this is awful" most of the time (minus the one shots and minis, the quality is everywhere on those...). Instead it's a sense of "Oh, that's all?" or "I don't know if that's the best decision..." I like the outliers and feel they're a cute idea but I do also think the phantom hand of editorial has no clue what the fuck to do with everybody.
Favorite series right now is still Generation X-23, it's pretty fun. Hope the LA shakeup leads to X-Men comics that hit me in the soul like before, they can do better than simply being okay

It's just more of the same to be frank. Nothing really new is happning. We're just reheating what happened before and passing it off as something new.
Personally I would say it would've been a better status quo change if mutants actually became more socially accepted post-Krakoa. You still got your racists here and there but you wouldn't get angry mobs of random people who have no political beliefs beyond unrelenting hatred for people who happen to have slightly longer fingers or three balls.

The more amusing thing is if Emma was going to snuff Shaw before the nerve gas, why did Destiny not realize that? Why go through with their plans when they don't have to? Just means they took credit because doing so works in their favor. They always knew Logan was going to spot Toad and that he'd back down for them. I'm not entirely convinced that they had to be present in order to secure Shaw's resources, or really that they even needed it. With who they have on their side they could get virtually unlimited funding dozens of different ways with their powers.

Destiny does destiny shit, it probably wont even be expanded upon. Emma has to be in on it because who is going to do business if not emma, mystique is just a low level terrorist. Feels wrong to have any X-man glimpse Sinister and not immediately turn this whole thing into a "kill Sinister" mission. He's not a guy they should just let walk out the door.
>>
>>154743839
So you think it's a con-ception (har har) play? People were no doubt happy 3K takes the blame even without Empath, but in case they somehow get exonerated they wanted a backup set of patsies?

At any rate Destiny's visions definitely aren't perfect. I do see why people might find it amusing. Destiny didn't just sense something was going to happen, she specifically scrutinized multiple timelines for how this might play out, looking for the most advantageous, so the idea that despite all that prepwork she missed it even being necessary at all IS kind of funny. But the potential timelines she would have ignored no doubt included the ones where they didn't do anything. We learned at the end of Krakoa that she's the biggest point of failure point for her power, since her own fear of Mystique dying was itself fucking up her attempting to stop Mystique dying.

Moot point. Odds that two groups attempt murders so close together that they practically overlap, and using methods that produce the same cursory evidence?

Wow, Shadows of Tomorrow only lasted a full year before they decided to move to the next era
Brevoort is also rumored to be not following with Marvel when they move to Burbank in July next year, since the reason he couldn't accept a position at DC was specifically because he couldn't move to California

Wacker will be at SDCC, no idea if he's replacing Cebulski
>>
>>154736243
>>154738704
Jean has probably been the most poorly handled character of this era
Brevoort thought he had something when he decided to have her go to space
>>
>>154734726
Why is Cyclops so murder-happy in this comic? This isn't like him at all.
>>
>>154747005
>Brevoort is also rumored to be not following with Marvel when they move to Burbank in July next year
That's kinda surprising since he felt like he basically been sticking around so he could become EiC tbf I can't really think of any Marvel editorial house he hasn't done at this point so he can't really do much more at Marvel
>>
>>154746901
Well the Nicieza retcon from back in the 90s was that the reason why Asian Betsy acted so different from her previous self was because Spiral mixed her and Kwannon's brains together. At the end of that arc, everything in her head that was Kwannon died with her, but she didn't really change that much, just stopped trying to steal Scott away from Jean.
>>
>>154747311
Rip Van Winkle take, Cyclops has been pro murder squads ever since he formed an X-Force kill squad back in 2008.

Feels like there's a bunch of holes with the murder mystery plot:
>its established that Shaw's psychic inhibitors are decent enough such that it can stop a single psychic, meaning Emma would need help to breach it through either another psychic or have someone disable his protections
>on one hand, if Emma was working together with Mystique and Destiny, not sure why they bothered to cover for her when they supposedly are completely honest to Logan and its not like Emma has a clean record to keep, also why would Toad throw suspicion on her way
>on the other hand, if Emma wasn't aware at all and just did things coincidentally, why didn't she have a reaction to seeing "Shaw" still walking around after she supposedly fried his brain, like what if he just revived or that she got tricked

Also if Scott already has some backup plan in case Psylocke's assassination is seen, why suddenly not an option anymore when they can get away with murdering the 3K for being the suspect. Instead they just let mutants dislike them as if 3K weren't already disliked for all their terrorism and give them time to escape, at the very least could have had psyblade the teleporter so that they get properly interrogated.
>>
>>154747901
It's not a fair mystery that you can solve before the reveals
>>
>>154734905
>>154734937
I just realized that this likely means that the Namor thing was just Emma leading him on to create her own alibi not that she was actually interested in him (or at least wasn't really thinking of rekindling things) since I thought maybe she was just in a bad mood from being suspected.
>>154739207
Emma was just leading Namor on so he'd cover for her, its also not clear how much time passed so he might have just gotten a kiss before the body was found.
>>

>>154748044
I mean "fair" was already highly unlikely given we're dealing with all kinds of mutants present which means anyone could have really done it but still it has to make sense by the end. If Emma wasn't in on it then she should have thought something was wrong when Shaw was still in the party after she supposedly fried his brain. If Emme wasn't then its kinda dumb for Toad to keep throwing shade on her nor why would Destiny and Mystique keep her involvement a secret.

Also another plot hole ive noticed is that apparently Shaw was already dead for quite some time yet according to Wolverine >>154734712 it should be fairly recent since he's just catching Shaw's "panic" scent when it should be long gone by this point.

I can only really think the writer just has a vague idea on how a murder mystery is like and didn't really think about how things would get contradicted.
>>
>>154748236
I think even with all the mutant abilities, you could still mostly make it fair and follow the Holdan Age murder mystery rules, but Ahmed and Breevort just chose not to that
>>
>>154748273
I mean I wasn't really expecting them to make a clever mystery within a single issue and it'd all be some big twist but was at least hoping the twist makes sense by the end. As it is, Emma basically killed Shaw a while ago but thought nothing of how he still is showing up at the party and just makes out more with Namor? Maybe she failed to kill him, maybe she got someone else? Wolverine smelled someone was in a panic over being killed but it took him 20 minutes to find them? If he could smell that then he ought to also have snuffed the nerve gas as well.
>>
>>154747311
Brevoort explicitly regressed Scott back to being Rightclops because he desperately wants Bendis back at Marvel and writing Xmen
>>
>>154748572
>he desperately wants Bendis back at Marvel
why?
It's not like the Bendis run was very well regarded even when it ongoing
>>
>>154748572
Brevoort may like the Bendis era but Bendis isn't coming back unless he gets an exclusive contract and he's far too over-the-hill for that.
>>
>>154748572
But Bendis said that he's only working on special limited series projects at Marvel, so he's not doing another run

And people doubted me covering Weapons of Armageddon here.

>Earth’s Mightiest Mutants assemble!

>Earlier today at the Marvel Comics: Avengers: Armageddon panel at San Diego Comic-Con, superstar writer Chip Zdarsky shed light on the era that follows AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON (2026), including his upcoming AVENGERS (2026) run with Marco Checchetto where the Avengers are left to pick up the pieces of a shattered world that’s turned against them. As the Avengers take time to regroup, an all-new X-Men team rises to take their place as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in MAXIMUM X-MEN, a new ongoing series by acclaimed writer Christopher Yost—returning to the X-Men after his acclaimed work on the franchise in the 2010s—and artist Tony S. Daniel, who recently made his own return to the world of X in Jed MacKay's X-MEN (2024).

>Together, the two X-Men veterans introduce an all-new, all-different kind of X-team as Storm, fresh off her stint with Avengers, recruits a lineup of all-star mutant heroes—including X-Men mainstays and a pair of iconic mutant Avengers—to confront global threats no other team is equipped to deal with, beginning with nothing less than a relentless inter-dimensional invasion! Both creators joined the panel as surprise guests to discuss the new series.

>In the wake of the events of AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are no more! So who will stand in defense of the Earth? The X-Men will! Storm gathers an elite team for just that task, including Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Psylocke, Firestar, and Justice! Mutants by birth, heroes by choice! And their first challenge is a full-on invasion from the Negative Zone! Is this Annihilus again—or something far, far worse?
>>
>'On reuniting with Marvel’s Merry Mutants, Yost shared “I’ve worked on my fair share of X-Books over the years, but MAXIMUM X-MEN is everything I love about comics rolled into one— it’s underdog heroes saving the world from the biggest Avengers-level threats imaginable, it’s mind-breaking action and drama and everything people expect from X-Men, all with a classic Claremont vibe. Rolling MAXIMUM X-MEN out as part of the new world post-Armageddon only lets us spotlight the need for a story like this… and to top it all off, I get to work with legendary artist Tony Daniel. As a life-long X-Men fan, it doesn’t get any better!”

>“The X-Men have long been my favorite characters since discovering GIANT SIZE X-MEN (1975) #1 in the fourth grade,” Daniel added. “I’ve always dreamed of working on my favorite characters so it’s an incredible honor to launch MAXIMUM X-MEN with Chris. I’ve been a fan of Chris’s writing for a long time, but this is our first time joining forces. I’m already in love with the story in the first issue. Its vibe and energy reminds me so much of the kind of X-Men stories I loved as a child and I can’t wait for the audience to see what we have in store.”

>Check out Tony S. Daniel’s cover and stay tuned for more news about the series in the months ahead. Discover what leads into these bold new runs of AVENGERS and X-MEN in AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON, now available at your local comic shop.

She exists in a liminal state where she technically is Captain Britain but cannot feature in a solo book that allows her to do Captain Britain things.

Tini Howard should be shot in a cannon to the moon. Or at least not allowed to write anything but niche lesbian indie comics, since it's clearly all she wants to do.
>>
After a murder, continuing to party isn't an option. At the least, everyone should have taken their masks off so we readers could keep track of who everybody is.

Side note: COULD Mystique take her mask off -- or was it also part of her shapeshifted body?
