Blossom is best powerpuff. Bubbles is bipolar and Buttercup is a one note character that would look smarter if she stayed mute. In hindsight the movie would have done better if it was completely 90 minutes of action and was advertised with Buttercup kicking Satan in the face and giving him a nosebleed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jw5oud8hTS0
One his softer reviews, I'm surprised he didn't mention the bus girl. He loves making fun of "Not" jokes.
He said everything that had to be said about the movie in 19 minutes albeit without shoving it in your face and without explaining it too much, just stating the obvious which autists ignore.

However I am swearing at him "What's with the monochrome space part? Is this a Swedish art movie?" Fuck you, I loved that part, but I'm not American so obviously I enjoyed artsie sensitive stuff. I wonder what he had to say about the Blind Archers Samurai Jack episode.
What did I have to say about PPG?
https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/154679056/#154691100

Also Doug Walker reviewed Speed Demon. I have not watched this review yet, I didn't even know it existed. However Speed Demon and RRB are the two episodes I have an issue with the ending, always had. And a PPG I do not take issue with and I consider it the finale is the one with the Professor's Dick friend. I always assign status quo shows a finale like how Samurai Jack had the infected Aku episode. I do that cause status quo shows don't have an ending even if the team behind it subconsciously assign one to a random episode. Dexter's Lab was a rarity among status quo shows.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6z8xJUM9T8

As for the show itself ... it was a mixed bag that was always weaker than Dexter's Lab despite Craig having smarter ideas for attack moves than Genddy does that's obsessed with the human body language, but with PPG it's hard to do choreography so you have to rely on visual special effects attacks.
>>
This show was genuinely never good

That won't help with the discussion beyond bumping the thread so I don't have to simply repost it. I am watching Doug's review on Speed Demon and going to watch Twisted Sister after it. It's night and day how much more attention to detail he puts into the review and actually analyzes it instead of summarizing up shit you already know if you watched the movie and episode.
Of course it's much easier to do summaries if you never wrote down what you had to say about an episode or inspiration doesn't hit you to give you that perspective on things or to see what's on screen.

Speed Demon
>You just raced that's all you did
>But again to see this imagery with the "your fault, your fault" chanting, is a very intense imagery for a child.
No, as a child I was yelling "Punch the living shit out of them, they're annoying me" you know ... like they did so many times before. PPG was a really bipolar contradicting show that needed a tighter writers room, even Samurai Jack was more consistent with his morality.
>all that technical storytelling stuff where is technically correct on all accounts and I understand exactly what he's saying since I'm not retarded, but he's still lacking perspective and isn't adding his own personality to it.

So I always took issue with Speed Demon and horror in general and that's why I will always love the horror action combo cause horror that tries to teach a "lesson" is always hypocritical when the answer is just "have more power and then you can set your own rules/lessons to patronize your audience with".
With Speed Demon and RRB I am always bothered by cop out endings. In doomed apocalypse time travel episodes, most of the straight-played but decent ones have the hero beat the shit out of the villain even at his strongest ... there are others where the hero is forced to run away from the villain, but those are rarer (ironically less cliche) and can sometimes be better and stronger, but it still feels like a cop out that you need to use time travel to win.
In PPG it feels jarring cause you literally have 3 episodes and more where the PPG tell the townspeople to go fuck themselves(Too Pooped to Puff) They literally beat the living crap out of the mind controlled townspeople - they actually address this cliche of "Oh no, we're in a hostage situation what do we do? LOL FUCK THE HOSTAGES" that's why I loved PPG as a kid. They even beat up the clown because "No, bro. I don't care that you were mind controlled by chemicals, you were drunk, you had chemical X, that was your alter ego. YOU GO TO JAIL, DR JEKYLL."

Doug in his basic bitch technical analysis is absolutely correct, what he's lacking is a little gusto and taking a little offense to form his own perspective.
As a kid whenever I saw cartoons attempting STRAIGHT horror stuff I always rolled my eyes "Look, the cartoonists think they're HBO again." that's why comedy with horror for cartoons works so amazingly well like Moville Mysteries and Courage the Cowardly Dog, and they have especially GOOD soundtracks you can actually hear, especially if the main character is a mute like Courage, you can actually hear the soundtrack without the voice acting polluting the channel.

There are some episode of PPG which could have used 30 minutes, I say that a lot about shows.
Ironically the slow panning stuff NC pointed out in the background with the time travel references and the posters ... those ironically weren't slow enough, but the PPG team instead wasted time showing off the zombie characters, even Miss Bellum that wasn't even show in the pre-dystopia portion to contrast, not even the professor.
They could have just shown Miss Keane for contrast to play with that. I think originally they might have shown the mayor, Bellum, the professor to do that contrast play, but that would have only ruined the pacing even more.

There are shows ... with a huge amount of build up like Swat Kats ironically ... where it takes as long as 15 minutes to get everything set up, even 18 minutes and then you're left with resolving the plot in just 7 to 3 minutes which means no epilogue, I didn't like or care for it, I accepted it and tolerated it as I don't care, just end it already since the first 15 mins weren't that boring, but with slow episodes like this one and Dexter's own attempts at horror episodes ... you really feel like you're wasting a lot of time that could have been used for something else.
And cartoons have package deals, one episode is not better animated than the other.

I'm going to ignore that comment. I'll just reply to it so you know that I see you.

>You know what are the best PPG episodes? the ones with entirely pointless deaths.
No, those would be the ones with entirely purposeful violence. I also enjoyed the monster of the week episodes more than the "villains gallery" the PPG have which only Him and Mojo jojo are worth anything.

>Twisted Sister
Ah yes the episode which little me wanted them to treat it like the Bullet squirrel episode, but the storyboarder-writers were assholes and decided "Nah we doing another dumb funny parody episode". Eh at least we got the Bullet episode ... in the Savino season ... ironically written by Faust and Craig, in a Chris Savino season.

Ironically I'm having more back and forth discussion with a person that isn't even here

>a satire of the anime style with the really big eyes
Astro Boy, Astro Boy made by Osamu Tezuka is what you're looking to say specifically.
>but it also played the super cute side of anime
For better and for worse, mostly worse. I remember PPG Z mostly being nothing but slice of life episodes when people and everyone by the title alone expected literally Dragon Ball Z ... and the japs took a shit on it and handled it to the equivalent of the Savino and Canadian side of Japan.
Ironically some SoL episodes were good, but they never truly expanded properly on the plot due to only being 10 minutes long albeit I've seen Dexter's Lab and Mao Mao slice of life episodes with better pacing. I remember the girls making the professor steal toys for them instead of stopping him then and there and then the cops and the professor teach them a lesson.

>Sometimes it would look very cinematic and detailed and sometimes it would look like a kindergarten drew it and sometimes it's both, so even though you see this style everywhere now.
>You see this style everywhere now
I don't see it. Netflix doesn't use this style. TTGO doesn't use cinematic overly detailed shots NOT animated in Flash.
And this style is literally Astro Boy. Also any show that does special episodes like "they go inside the TV", and "They're having a dream sequence" often have a change of style, just like the PPG have a change of style that one time when explaining to the mayor what happend while he's butt naked.

>What shows like this and Dexter's Lab discovered is that when you keep the designs very simple you can actually get away with a lot more motion.
Could have fooled me with how cheap everything still moves. Spectacular Spiderman did it properly while using the excuse of "simpler angular designs help us create better animation/motion" despite that not being true, you can have both. There's plenty of giant robot fights that have good animation. It's always about time, talent, budget.
For example TALES of the TMNT looks better and is even better animated than Rise of the TMNT, often times on the same level of the RISE's movie that had a proper budget. It's all about time, budget, talent, you need all 3.

>In anime I don't want to say they cut corners, but you often see how they incorporate moments of stillness where you don't even see the mouth moving, but instead you see a close-up of the eyes so you don't see the rest of the bodies or the characters are really far away so they make up for that in the action scenes where they can use a lot of motion.
Yeaaahh but comparing apples to oranges without understanding the context. I don't want to say John K attempted something similar cause he didn't and I don't remember what production pipeline he attempted so I don't want to say bullshit, but
like I said before at CN you get paid in a package, there are no veteran animators, extra time dedicated, extra stuff dedicated to one episode over another unless it's a "special" produced after the main production is already over or in hiatus like the christmas PPG episode where indeed the animation, graphics, time was more careful.

In Japanese cartoons you have nothing but inbetweeners which makes the animation look like dogshit cause they barely understand what the storyboard artist and main animator wanted to do with that scene without using a shit ton of references and copying from other choreography from other cartoons 1:1 ending up in Naruto copying Cowboy Bebop.
Instead of the keyframe actually animating his own fucking frames like how they do in Tom & Jerry where it was just 4 animators and 2 background artists (or it was 2 animators and 4 background artists?) before we had all these useless jobs with a storyboarder who can't draw on model, can't draw backgrounds, can't animate and then we made "layout artists" and even lazier job for people who can't draw backgrounds.

You might say "Oh wow look how smooth it is" yeah? check out Russian animation. So yes it's smooth, but it's motionless, directionless, it lacks the 12 principles and at best uses only 2-3 principles cause the inbetweener has no fucking idea what you're trying to do. He's filling in the frames

>They're very simple designs and that's how they can get a lot of emotion and motion at the same time
>and in the action sequences they can be very fluid and very fast.
Barely any emotion on the PPG in those shots
You literally showed me a bunch of cut-out shots of the PPG punching the gangreen gang in the cheapest way possible where the camere has to cut to a static shot and the animators couldn't even be arsed to put some WEIGHT into those short noodle arms.
Those were probably the worst examples to show that PPG has fluid animation.

>unapologetically violent
Yeah just like Tron Uprising and Samurai Jack because "oh they're not real humans"
That's why I hated the gangreen gang, fuzzy lumpkins, princess morbucks cause you couldn't show decapitation, couldn't show blood, couldn't show the guts hanging out, that would have been violent to see a little ginger kid look like Mojo Jojo at the end of the candy episode. Something for some reason that happens a lot to Mojo to the point Savino made an entire episode about it with the PETA hippies (Kindaaaa) , but for some reason Him didn't get the same treatment despite in the intro he's clearly bleeding. Ironically they showed bleeding in the damn intro, but not in the actual cartoon, you cannot explain that. The censors cannot explain to me what the hell happened there.
I also think the one-shot villains were far better than the consistent villains they had. I think Boogeyman along with the 4 monsters Bubbles faces off in Bubblevicious could have really been good to have recurring monsters of the week that could have stayed longer.

>>
>>154759149
I think powerpuff lost some of its identitty over time, af fist you had them violently maulling kaijus with their bare knucles but ovet time they felt less violent and their enemies became sillier. You loose something when they no longer rip a monster in half during the day just to play with dolls hours later. I think that duality is what set them appart from a generic super hero story.
>>
>>154759283
I hate that mentality of "The world will crumble if Spider-Man takes an off day" the worse part is they had an episode when it shows the Townsville people being too lazy and stupid because the girls do everything for them.

I'm not sure if I'm being too critical or Doug is fellating the PPG too much and I'm responding in opposite.
https://youtu.be/kNrFDNa2KWA?t=247
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNrFDNa2KWA
There's only 2 shots where they use shadows and a low hanging shot which isn't done at an upward angle, it's the camera showing Gangreen gang and zooming out between Blossom's skirt and legs to show both which don't have animation and any Jap cartoon does a lot more shading when it comes to static shots such as these, but after that it's the most generic still-shots of them punching the villains with the camera being positioned at a very 2D perspective rather than anything dynamic to make it look more 3D space looking.
>They play with the colors a lot.
I can't say they do unless you mean the generic black screen with one white circle to show that they punched them to simulate someone punching you in the face and your eyes reacting. They don't change color palette when they punch like some shows do and right now an editor could do. I did enjoy the few times when they used negative colors. I will not disagree that it's fast, yes it's fast, it's a prologue sequence to show that the PPG are getting tired after a long day's of work fighting crime. Alright moving on...

Courage the Cowardly Dog also had episodes where you had bad guys and then bad guys WHO TURNED OUT to be good guys and sometimes the reverse and sometimes a weird combination like the amnesiac burglar where he climbs Mount Rushmore.

The thing is that it never contradicted itself like how PPG keeps doing. You don't have one episode saying "TO HELL WITH BIG FOOT" and then in the next episode "Let's help big foot"

Courage also did a lot of sad weepy stuff, but it was never meloDRAMATIC like PPG does. Crybaby scenes are easy to do and fit very well with kindergarten shows. Drama is ery hard to do, it implies Shakespeare conundrums. You don't suddenly have The Rugrats and Baby Looney Tunes going "We failed you, townsville. We disappointed you. MUH HONOR, ZUKO!!!" you don't have them do that.
The PPG literally left townsville(Astro Boy cliche city) for the "realistic" New York city for a day and nothing happened.

Courage also never had moral posturing or at least not as clashing like PPG did like trying to teach the PPG that "stealing is bad, kids".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dAmP9hVYEw

Or in my "favourite" scene where the mayor offers yet another statue in their honor, but they instead take the jar of candy, but in another episode they want $2000 but the mayor can't do it, I understand that it's meant for the joke, but ... first of all it's really sad that A MAYOR would consider $2000 a lot of money, showing the animators have no idea what a lot of money is.
And again the same fucking show tries to pull off the "Hey it's a parody, but it's also serious for this one episode cause we're poking fun at what would happen if these CARTOON characters WERE IN REAL LIFE SITUATIONS or the show was more logical and serious". Cause in the leech episode they use the mayor as bait and literally laugh about it.
They survive acid and fight giant monsters, but apparently plastic containers by the collector nerd guy is too much for them.

Well at least you're honest.
TL;DR I called out a jew, nobody believed me for 6 long years, someone named me after said jew where they kept recognizing me cause I was the only one calling out the jew despite me originally not using this name.
Some realized I was right, the others who are all newfegeleins still think Vogel and seasons 6-9 are good, mostly Hasdrones.
I also didn't originally start off by calling out the jew, I started off by yelling the show went to shit after season 1 which obviously bothered a lot of the gen-Z kids that watched the show starting from season 2.

>Idk
>named after* Michael Vogel, arguably the most important creative voice the show besides Faust herself
and the most destructive and incompetent which showed what a bunch of pussies the team working at Hasbro are where they keep saying "they/them/Hasbro" and then this retarded executives comes out 7 years later and literally laughs and proudly says "oh yeah I'm executive producer and writer for the show" and then keeps playing the innocent card "Nooo you guys I wasn't really in charge of ruining your show Savino-style. I was just as much of a cog in the machine as you, honestly ugoo." literally Mitch Mitchelson level of bullshitting except I think he's being honestly delusional about it, he's just that dumb.

I kept calling out his name and posting pictures of him and everyone called me troll, bait, insane, literally a "Kid cried wolf scenario" if the wolf was real.
I was later proven to be right after the 2017 movie and everyone facepalmed that I was right before they left the fandom. And a good majority still kept blaming me "If you didn't yell his name so much we would have believed you", "despite evidence that he and all the executives ruined the show WE STILL don't believe he did these atrocities and we actually suck his dick and keep blaming a lowly writer like Josh Haber for what he did".

Agreed. The one thing however that I dislike about Jap cartoons and how they waste their art is that ... they don't add any real emotion and substance to their art beyond stand-off shots. Most Jap cartoons are copied from spaghetti westerns and use every cowboy spaghetti western gimmick in the book which greatly helps if you're going for that style which makes it ironic that there aren't that many actual spaghetti western Japanese cartoons.
>Why wasted?
So you know how Courage does the sad stuff and plays the music and how PPG also has these dramatic slow scenes with grave music playing and then Hilda where only episodes 2 and 9 of season 1 and only a few moment among with Moomin Valley have these JUST ENJOYING THE SCENERY MOMENTS.
And Symbionic Titan where the subtext is that the song is shitty, but it resonates with the main character a lot cause the MC is an alien and his planet literally got taken over and he's forced to live on Earth as an alien.

I think these detailed artistic backgrounds and slow panning shots are wasted on Jap cartoons who copy the spaghetti western atmosphere(which ironically happen in a desert or in a small town where there isn't a lot of detail)
because they don't attempt to do different atmospheres like no not depression, not panic attacks, melancholy is the word.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQlxjSm0qU0&list=RDdQlxjSm0qU0&start_radio=1

A lot of live action movies lack it too and you often only see it in artsy movies entirely dedicated to it which makes the whole experience boring cause it has no substance. Emotions without purpose behind said emotion is shallow. It's not a 3-5 minute scene that makes you feel that melancholy. Most often it only lasts

>Start a Youtube channel
Care to help me? Hey don't run away, fag. Come back here you singular faggot. You can be my editor.

So the reason I never started a Youtube channel is that ironically I'm a perfectionist despite the huge amount of lack of proof-reading in this thread. it's not that I don't know grammar, it's that I hate having to proof read and I just type instantly what comes to my mind instead of carefully writing it in a well ordered structure. Plus 4chan's font sucks ass. So I don't have a good proof-reader to organize my script and neither a good voice actor who can voice this. Plus as we all know, nobody will watch your review cause Youtube doesn't even allow people to search for it. Plus kids watch TikTok nowadays.
So I ironically consider the 4chan catalog enough of a print for anyone who wants to read these and anyone who wants to go a little above it can voice act them if they're feeling passionate about cartoon reviews but can't be arsed to read and want a radio show.

Ironically I never put these on Deviantart, deviantart supports text and a lot more people would read it and find it easier to link to. I guess I always thought deviantart was for art, not for books. It's actually become a problem where discussion gets locked in Discord cause you cannot google a Discord channel's chats. There are programs for exporting Discord chats, but once again where do you post them. "Twisted Sister. Obviously a parody of the band Green Day."
Oh, Doug. You goof. You millennial with the heart of a zoomer.

What was my reaction to Bunny dying?
Good riddance and maybe a laugh.
But I honestly got pissed off as a kid, not because the derped character died, heavens fuck no.
But because they attempted to pull the serious dramatic "Let's all cry for the make a wish foundation character" which felt like emotional manipulation like The Simpsons and most cartoons and Courage try to play at your hearstrings when the sad music is playing, but in PPG's case especially of the narrator it felt more dramatic and I just did not give a shit. I swear if it was the squirrel I would have given more of a shit.
I understood what emotional manipulation was, I understood what hostage situations were, what lying was, what faking was, what parody is, unlike most stupid kids I actually watched good movies and often compared them to cartoons and I found the cartoonists utterly delusional if they actually attempted to make me give a shit about this character rather than make me laugh that the retarded Frankenstein died. It's obvious logical wise they thought they couldn't just make her fuck off somewhere else, else people would ask "Where the hell is Bunny? Who gives a crap" It's obvious they tried to do the Frankenstein angle like Doug pointed out, but they don't have the time(like Doug pointed out) nor the experience and talent to pull it off without bringing in their best men and women on the job. Trying to make you care for a monster is hard to do, it's always "Despite his faults he was truly human" and you just don't have time to do that. Frankenstein isn't a cute little girl to have the instant visual appeal at the very least.

They could have easily just kept him as the mime even when they restored all the colors and just imprisoned him as the mime.
I wonder how Dexter's Lab was handled compared to PPG. I guess Dexter's Lab actually had a writer and headwriter. For example Dexter's personality for the most part is never inconsistent.

This is an interesting episode in terms of the feel of it. It's much slower, it uses a different soundtrack 50% of the time and of course we have pic related. It feels different.
>>
Weird feeling episode from the slowness of it, to the dialogue to the storyboarding to putting more expressions on the characters rather than the action sequences. It's weird since it's technically an action and SoL episode in one yet it feels like a PSA that ironically teaches not to make fun of eating glue despite that being dangerous as fuck? I wonder what kind of glue Americans have, but if you ate the kind of glue we had you'd be a goner. Credits seem don't seem to be any different. I think this was one of the earlier episodes, who knows. It just feels a tiny bit surreal like something you'd expect out of the Savino seasons like when the handicapped kids get chemical X from Mojo... oh wait that was season 2.

No, Craig just has a bad habit of being a hypocrite just like Wander over Yander and moral posturing everywhere he goes. The fine art of irony, sarcasm, parody is not something just anyone can do and especially not with the wrong context.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-shhEOODTGs

Cool design on the cockroaches tho and the cockroach inside the robot, but once again really stupid that you show the devil getting a nose bleed in the intro yet human-looking robots are okay to decapitate and dismember as long as they're not robots.

PPG simply had this unfortunate seed of having too many 6 year old little girl cartoon stuff in it compared to Dexter's Lab where the kids were at least 12-13 years old and aimed at such a demographic and also specific stuff like girly stuff was resigned to specific characters like DeeDee that barely got any episodes as a main character, for the better. I still remember the robot episode. The only fun thing you could do with DeeDee was to turn her into a straightman to get her comeuppance and give her some intelligence so she's not so stupid in most of the episodes.

>So anon what is your issue with RRB along with Speed Demon?
They're perfectly fine episodes aside from the endings, that's what bothers me about them. Since you don't need to rewrite them from the groundup, you can just add an extra actiony ending to them and they'd be perfect. or fixed some might say.

There's a bunch of episodes and a bunch of action shows where I never realized just how slow the buildup is and how little action there is despite remembering it as an action show and remember the action scenes first and foremost that feel like they lasted a lot more time than they actually did.
With 7 mins you would have had more different concept episodes and less repeating scenes just like Dexter. I think 7 minutes for quick ideas and 30 minutes for storytelling are the exact sweet spot for showing off an idea without wasting it.

Of course some writers are so bad that no matter how short of a timeframe or how long of a timeframe you give to them it still feels badly paced and there's a bunch of scenes and motions they forgot and a bunch of scenes they shouldn't have repeated for their own good. Like how DSCHG's premiere despite having 44 minutes feels like a 15 minute short due to the training montage and action sequences and dialogue sequences dragging on and barely getting anything done and even when you do give her only 5 minute episodes it turns into looney tunes but not the inventive kind where every plan and ACME product is fresh and new and you're interested to see how it's going to take you by surprise and backfire this time.
>>
>The RRB episode
And how would you know what little boys hate, Miss Bellum? Just a few episodes ago they had Pig-Pen wanting to kiss the girls and nothing happened to them. Would have been funny if they both exploded.

I never liked shows where the main villain is defeated by a gimmick rather than experience, it always sticks out.
Episode's ending could be easily fixed by them turning into the flaming cat and defeating them, not even requiring the cliche that the boys should turn into a flaming puppy themselves.

In Xiaolin Showdown Dashi uses shen gon wu in the beginning to defeat Wuia yet in the 2nd season's premiere they say she's unaffected by it.
Dashi says you can only take Wuia by surprise, which Raimundo kinda does, only for season 3 they keep using the most predictable moves against her even she is on equal footing against them.

Most shows do a combo of powerups and experience and often times forget them and suddenly the hero defeated the villain through the simplest means possible. Hint hint Samurai Jack season 5, just like Superman and PPG getting defeated by basic mooks and being afraid of the government despite the heroes themselves being city-ending threats that could easily take on a city or the entire planet.
However when shows do finally prioritize experience over powerups it's never memorable and people just find it normal , just like they find Flash and Superman being stopped by slow as fuck villains to be a normal cliche you accept cause the writer can't figure it out.

>What about the time the Gangreen Gang got powers and they got defeated by a time limit?
Technically not a gimmick, a time limit is more accepted than "they're allergic to salt" or some shit.

They use these archetypes cause they're true and tested, they always work and appeal to everyone.
I'm glad Blossom isn't a pushover like other nerds and she can often times be a hothead boss herself like Buttercup.
Bubbles sadly has that cliche that comes with her archetype - the sensitive one has temper tantrums that often leads to a literal schizophrenic buttercup having multiple personality disorders. She can also come off as very hypocritical cause she's the dumb one.
Buttercup is a complete mess cause she really is nothing but dumb anger and like I said before she ironically gets more bearable when she goes mute like they actually did for an entire episode, it's too bad she was a traitor due to literally having older boy crushes on green guys. Carol from Freedom Planet is the same stereotype but better written, not significantly but a lot.
Buttercup comes from a long line of "dumb brutes" archetypes like Raphaello, Numbuh 4s, etc. without any of the intelligence.

Blossom and Bubbles always had more dimension to them than Buttercup did, which isn't saying much since Bubbles also doesn't balance her traits correctly and they always give her specific episodes where she freaks out.
These archetypes can be written much more intelligently since they are based off real 3D archetypes from books, media and based off real life personalities you can potentially find in your everyday life. Only problem is when you give it to a storyboard artist that doesn't specialize in writing.

>The inconsistencies with PPG
It has some elements and ideas that keep coming back to haunt it. If people thought Juniper Lee had bad world design then PPG is on another level. Dexter's Lab never promised accurate world design.

PPG constantly has some things it keeps referencing back to throughout each episode but never does anything concrete with it which is obvious since Chemical X was originally a literal can of whoop ass and the girls were called the Whoopass girls and Fuzzy Lumpkins was turning everyone into sausages. So it was never a serious show with much thought put into it. Which is ironic since KND started off originally as a spin-off for Kenny and the Chimp and in the first episodes there was no moon base and there were no other treehouses, but KND is a very rare case. CN often fumbles their own shows. Ed Edd Eddy wasn't even made in house.

Chemical X seems to affect anyone, but the effects are temporary unless you're a RRB or PPG. It's not explained where it comes from or how it's made, albeit Mojo Jojo and Morbucks have synthesized it countless times and there is an antidote to it, but the PPG never pull any Spectacular Spiderman emo Peter Parker with it where they question if to take it or not.

The PPG constantly seem to have abandonment/unwanted issues and an insane self awareness about their identities from birth. And constantly seem to want to leave the town and go ... where the fuck do they want to go? They never go anywhere with that.

There aren't more PPG to create some organization or start some Sailor Moon/Power Rangers show where more and more characters join the cast. For better or for worse.
>>
>>154763911

They seem to have a high intelligence that's only matched by their naiveity and lack of moral conduct almost like a Pinnochio(if Pinnochio wasn't naturally dumb).
They sometimes want to be normal little girls, but this is never presented as always an end goal like the book I just mentioned.
They never go evil despite they could easily do so and Bubbles does by getting hit in the head or throwing a temper tantrum.

PPG can go into space, but there aren't many space episodes and out of town episodes.
Craig seems to have a vendetta against giant robot fights and thinks robots shouldn't be flexible for some ungodly reason.
SoL and Action absolutely have to be separated into their own shows to stop trudging on each other's territory and waking up with a tonal problems.
Only "world" design was that there's a monster island, but that's Savino season which sucks. However the monsters of the week should definitely become recurring villains, better than the broccoli shits and especially the amoeba boys which fine they don't get featured much anyway. Gangreen Gang again no powers, they're often slice of life tier villains, again that weird mixture of action and SoL that makes the show so directionless. Pick a side or separate it, don't mix it together if you don't want a grey mess.

I think that's it. I can't remember if they had anything else they kept referencing, promisng and not delivering on, but besides the monster island there really is no world design. Ocassionally some one-shot aliens might visit.
I guess certain super powers like the flaming cat, ice breath, animal talking language can count as "world" "design" ? kind of a stretch, like Buttercup always being meant to be the angry one. Also I'm pretty sure Buttercup's special ability was a tornado.

It's crappier when you consider the days they spent out in Citiesville. Albeit, HIM never said it took him a day to do that. It's about how he went too long unopposed, but the girls were so traumatized they took it to the extreme they can never leave one day.

If it matters, in the comic where they travel dimmensions and Townsville is left on its to fend against villains and the entire monster island, the Justice Friends show up and actually stop everyone.

I got giddy when I thought Blackfire was actually going to replace Starfire not because Blackfire is that great of an archetype beyond being a mischievous slut , but because Starfire was genuinely that bad of an archetype bordering on "The dumb one, the retard" but without the bipolar syndrome of other sensitive types since Starfire was never really the pacifist. Albeit a Catwoman-type character as the protagonist would be kinda interesting ... at least for 6 episodes before I get bored of her too and find her predictable that she's being an asshole and ironically cannot be sensitive.

One thing which sounds ironic is that stereotypes actually have an advantage by being overspecialized. Whenever a stereotype talks, moves, BREATHES, you instantly understand what their traits are.

Unlike the Professor which you could consider a more balanced character, but you don't see all his traits all out at once, just like Bubbles, problem with both is that again they never show off their full traits all at once to make them feel like more interesting characters and often times they can have the problem where they're hypocritical as shit. "Oh the dumb sensitive one is getting angry because she's the dumb sensitive one? Boy I better apologize despite her making me angry and pissed off cause she's dumb and schizo and often has a temper tantrum I should correct."
Blossom can often be selfish through her bossiness and other things, but she still retains that "I want to always have the high ground in all maters, be smart, follow authority so I can represent authority, etc." which is still kinda crappy compared to other iterations of this archetype but luckily she doesn't have the sensitivity other characters in the same archetype like Katara does where can often times go full pissed off Azula in personality.
Problem with fusions just like stereotypes vs archetypes is that they require good writers and you either don't specialize enough or you end up with a random mess.
>>
>>154763911
They don't display ambition to explore the rest of the world because 1: trauma, 2: there's already a vast network of super heroes across the globe that protects it, and 3: they will quickly get bored, no other place has offers the lifestyle Townsville has.

PPG because it's 10 minute episodes each always feel the need to "waste" 5 minutes on the setup and while I do enjoy the setup it really eats from the action.
However often times no matter how much time you give a non writer they always end up wasting it because let's say you gave them 20 minutes to work with, they won't spend 5 minutes on the setup and 15 minutes on the action in a more varied way... they'll either spend 10 or 15 minutes on the setup or the action will just be constant repeats of the same thing for 10 minutes instead of 5 minutes instead of coming up with different ideas for each scene cause the writer/storyboard artist in this case ran out of ideas.

That's why shows with good action and climaxes even when let's say it's just 5 and 3 minutes of climax action like in Swat Kats in certain episodes, it always feels like a lot more because there's so much shit going on that's not repetitive, so many plotlines, villains, henchmen, plans, ideas to keep track of that 5 minutes feels like a lot more IF the team is smart enough to utilize all of them at the same time and in a coherent manner without feeling rushed.
That's why normal shows also utilize the villains' perspective a lot of the time, to keep the pacing fresh.
>>
>>154764954
Not exclusively a creator's problem, could also be a problem with deadlines. If you have to make so many long episodes in a short amount of time, you will fill the hell out of it.
>>
>>154764782
Yeah I member, I mean I remember. She basically goes full Buttercup, even being a good for nothing traitor, they even do this in the Reboot.
But unlike Buttercup, Bubbles never gets her comeuppance, they always try to make you feel sorry for this character that's rightfully in the wrong.
On the other hand Buttercup often times get abandoned because of her ego and stubborness like the episode where she steals all the teeth and the PPG refuse to help her.

It reminds me of the episode where the sleepwalking professor is stealing dolls.
As a kid when I saw the end I thought to myself "Wow you guys are fucking assholes, why isn't the professor the one apologizing for being a fucking sleepwalking menace?"
Later did I give a fuck that he reported himself to the police and explained things (OFF SCREEN) and the PPG were the ones using him as a proxy to steal dolls and the PPG find out but don't report it to the police.
But even now I have a problem with it because this is the same show that puts the clown in jail cause his alter ego mime under the effects of chemicals sapped the entire town of color.
That's why separating the genres in their own shows is so important.

When you get shit like pic related where they go immature anime "Lol even the monster is laughing at her bad haircut, I better get discouraged and refuse to fight" ... and then the professor better give a bullshit confidence speech for 5 year olds so I get back in the fight.
Dexter's Lab never did that weirdness and that toddler level of sappiness and lack of maturity. That's why Dexter wins , not just because it's a good variety comedy action show that had some stinkers and weirdness itself, but not as much as PPG.

I can't think of episodes I hate of the PPG (or Dexter), just that there would be very, VERY boring episodes. So boring I couldn't bother to memorize them no matter how many times I watched them. The feminist and Bunny episodes come to mind.

Maybe situations I don't like seeing them in, like Blossom stealing. I don't know if it's because it would turn the episode boring or just weird to watch, as if me and the characters got disconnected from the show itself.

I do disagree on the hate of their inconsistencies and the sappy critiques. The first one is great if you're doing episodic storytelling, keeps it dynamic as long as you know how to play well the scenarios (which think they do ubder Craig). The latter, maybe I just agree with what they're saying, or it makes them feel grounded, or cause it contrasts with the wackyness and super heroism, or I think it makes the more genuine, I have no ideawhy I just like it that way. But it has to be measured, if it goes for more than 5 minutes it loses its touch, and you certainly don't need it every episode.

Kinda my problem with SU, the dynamic between feelings and characters was unbearable to me, them breaking into song every episode made it worse. That show I genuinely found it to be so melodramatic and overly sentimental it was irritating.

I like hating on things like the Savino seasons and admitting cause I'm not a pussy. I can't remember which is worse though: Dexter's Lab or PPG Savino episodes. One episode in particular I cringed at was the first return of the RRB when they're immune to kisses, I could have done without the slug scene and many others, the other episodes were half acceptable where they actuall capture Boomer and put Bubbles to pretend she's him or the Morbucks episode where she gets double crossed by the RRB and the RRB are finally on equal footing with the PPG in terms of power.
>Maybe situations I don't like seeing them in, like Blossom stealing.
I didn't like that not because it was uncomfortable but ironically cause she wasn't in the right. It once again tried to punish this archetype for being "selfish" which is a very common theme with this poor archetype, but also I can't say she got a worse ending than Buttercup losing all her money from stealing teeth.
I enjoyed that episode with the golf clubs because it's one of the rare instances where you see PPG vs PPG cause the dumbass writers never heard of training sessions since they conveniently forgot the training room after using it for 1 episode.

I do agree that you eventually get tired of wanton action and want something more cerebral and evenly paced(often times if you're a good writer you do both without undermining the other).

>Kinda my problem with SU
Same opinion I have for the Bunny episode. I do not care for her.
ESPECIALLY when Big Billy already did the idea and the episode was better written too. I constantly mistake the painting trashing for the Bunny episode since it's an unofficial big member of the PPG where Blossom is disappointed in except she yells at Billy. On rewatchs I cannot believe how badly paced and quick the Bunny episode is.
Again, I do not care for Bunny nor her melodramatic ending. I care more about the squirrel and Robin's episode.
If they had made a serious episode where it's a PPG-sized PPG where she's actually a serious character where the writers attempt the abandonment issues except this time it's the PPG abandoning her not the town then yeah I would have gave a fuck, like all the mutated clones Dick did.
Problem with PPG designs is that they already used black, orange, blonde hair color, they need to start reusing hair colors or start going with unnatural anime hair colors like purple, cherry, red, etc. since brown is an exceptionally ugly and boring color for a magical color and it always feels like a self insert color that clashes. It ruins the trio's contrasting colors. At best you could get away with doing a very stark shade of an existing color like black-blue or orange/strawberry-blonde or pure red and then go crazy with the eyes and color suit since those don't have to be natural, you can use orange, pink, purple, cherry, yellow.

The irony in this episode is that the PPGs are already rip offs of Astroboy(if he was biological) which in turn is a rip off of Superman. The PPG just like Superman can literally come up with new powers like the imaginary friend and the dreamwalking.
But cartoonists/artists aren't ever going to be honest and poke fun at literally themselves, at best they always have to poke fun at others while pretending they're not that.
I did enjoy the transformation scenes, it's too bad they had to turn it into a mockery but making them not be capable of reaching the monster of the week in time.

Hating Savino's work is ok. I don't, I loathe it, for pushing the shows to new lows. Honestly some good ideas, but awful execution, cause they were just terribly dull, or ruined by gross moments. Like the RRB fight. The girls feeling helpless when they were giants, pinned down getting beat, nice... the saliva, the slug, that thing they pulled out of their body... ew. Ruined the moment. Or the examole with Bubbles infiltration, it was half a boring inconsequential montage, and that moment where they thought Boomer escaped and they couldn't look back for one second. THE ONLY EPISODES I can remember liking from him, are the Gnome musical, Sedusa's revenge, and the dad fight from Dexter.

Oh wait, I know what I hate him from, so much character assassination. Specially the Ruffs.

And if you want to talk about uncomfortable: Power Word Sunburn. The other thing I was talking about wasn't uncomfortable, it was something that felt so strange that I would become disinterest with it.

No neon colors, we know how that ended. There's a good short fan live action where Bunny comes back (a normal looking woman) and is angry at the girls for how they treated her and blaming her for blowing up. It's actually HIM disguised as her, trying to goad the girls into a rage fit and succumbing to the guilt, which doesn't work cause they actually feel remorse and want to make ammends. I could fetch it, but later.

I did not care for Bunny either. I hate Bliss. The Robin and Bullet episodes are good.

Of all the fucking characters that always get blamed and their asses kicked you mean to tell me the dumb-as-fuck muttallo janitor lady never got her ass kicked? It feels like she was probably Bellum's original character before they replaced her to contrast better with the mayor except instead of being a nagging bitch they instead went with a benevolent serious character.

Shows like KND were a rarity on CN before the Ben 10 era.
You wouldn't normally see such world design and decent animation especially not with 3-4 specials/movies.
Not unless they were Warner Brothers shows like Batman.
The What A Cartoon lineup was always weird how they constantly tried to imitate Ren & Stimpy's success yet you can't say Ren & Stimpy was popular than DC , AND ALSO how WB never gave a proper budget to the What A Cartoon lineup hence why they were obligated to use UPA designs while still having shoddy animation. KND looks advanced compared to stuff like Dexter and PPG by actually having feet and hands compared to the PPG's noodle doll-like appendages.
Just weird that the same company that could afford to animate Swat Kats, Batman, Superman would cheapen out so much on the What a Cartoon lineup including with Samurai Jack that was already a 2001 show.

Put me in charge of PPG and you'd get the actual PPG Z series everyone wanted, except infinitely better written cause I hate power levels over technique. Technique will always be more important.

There's actually the Ganggreen episode where they get powers which the silly storyboarders put into perspective something dumb besides turning the PPG into jobbers.
The PPG are actually for some retarded reason really uncreative and bad at using their powers.
Blossom actually uses her own ice breath against Ace's ice powers, but never uses her ice powers the way he does with spawning icicles and creating a trail platform under him.
Blossom does it once, but only so she can do a team attack that doesn't do much. It shows that both the RRB and PPG can do fancy team moves ala Power Rangers which people enjoy, but their effectiveness leaves much to be desired. Also often times the storyboard artists/writers seem to really hate the PPG and refuse to make the battles equal. Ace just ends the fight 2 moves when he says he gets serious which is absolute bullshit cause the PPG should have more experience using their power than literal beginners. Seems like there were simply too many cooks in the kitchen and Craig is a bad tardwrangler that he himself contradicts himself a lot and lets people do whatever the fuck they want since he accepts everything as okay.

In PPG their use of powers and them learning their attack moves is never focused on, they just do it, but A LOT of times it shows just how useless Blossom's plans and the techniques are which obviously drives me bonkers. Especially in the episodes where Morbucks and Mojo Jojo also get super powers, it seems to be a thing where any time someone gets powers they're better at using them than the natural born ones. The writers are also too dumb to make a deal out of it, they just do it without any self awareness.

You're not wrong in one part, I think the animation quality is somewhat:

PPG = Dexter < Bravo < KND
Now, the hard part is where to place Batman TAS and TT, they are some of the better animated ones, but can't tell how they fare against KND. I would have to say something like:

KND ≈ Teen Titans (just different styles) < Batman

Trying to be as objective as possible.

KND is something inbetween ... it feels like the same budget as the PPG pilot episodes.
I'd say Teen Titans 200% has better animation than KND. Especially in certain episodes like ironically the "comedy/slice-of-life" episode where Robin is forced to go out with Kitty or else the Mothman released his moths and then there's also the boyfriend spider, the animation ironically has a huge amount of frames in there and really well keyframed ones too so it doesn't look like a boneless chicken flapping and flabbing around.
It's very ironic how the funny episodes of TT actually have better animation and all the transformation villains where they go crazy with the moving foregrounds and backgrounds. I'm talking Mad Mod and Mumbo Jumbo's episodes. Bastards have better animation than Slade episodes sometimes.

I'd say KND has slightly better animation than Cow & Chicken + Ren & Stimpy which are already pretty smooth and hand drawn. PPG and Dexter feel stiff and constantly have to take shortcuts.

Most PPG episodes as much as it pains me to say feel just one or two levels above the TTGO series despite PPG not using Flash and ironically Invader Zim having better animation and backgrounds. It really feels like they cheapened out on Craig and Tartakovsky specifically.
If you compared the Star Wars vs Sym-Bionic Titan vs Samurai Jack vs you can see the results with Star Wars having a serious proper budget, Sym-Bionic Titan having something inbetween and Samurai Jack having the cheapest one. It's too bad I can't see the budget for each shows or episodes, albeit time and talent also matters a lot. Offer too little time and nobody has time to animate it, throw infinite amounts of cash at a talentless fuck who never animated at the level of a theatrical movie and you'll end up with The Flash tv series guys pretending they can make Flash the movie.

I think if the storyboard artists/writers had any semblance of brains in them they could have did something interesting or at least neat where simian, human, gorrilaz intellect beats PPG's natural instincts. Where the PPG aren't actual naturalborn superheroes, they're really naive first-day-born toddlers who just want to have fun and play. (which still doesn't explain fucking Morbucks)
meanwhile ... the more experienced, older villains... aaactually forget it. That makes no sense. Especially since the RRB beat the PPG despite the RRB being born yesterday and somehow they already know rehearsed team moves, special moves, etc. it's just bad writing and I can't make sense of it. It's stupid to try to make up for it instead of rewriting the concept from zero.

Cute, the girls are saying "What A Cartoon".
Heh cute... and weird. Holy shit the PPG are actually pretend robbing a bank!!!
The different voice actors actually feel like a breath of fresh air at least for Bubbles.
The animation is so smooth.

I wonder how this ever got greenlit. If you showed me only these 2 pilot episodes I wouldn't have greenlit it either, maybe that's why it has such a low budget and why it took the PPG 6 whole years to finally get a cartoon show. Executives didn't believe in it.
>>
>>154766985
I'm not saying it can't be improved, or giving it a different flavor. What I wouldn't give to watch a more serious/consistent PPG show, without sacrificing its identity. I'm talking about the attitude of trash talking the production team and stroking your own ego. Unnecessary, too emotional. Brings the argument down.

They could go to Samurai Jack/Aku's world where they hate it because it's a cyberpunk dystopia full of aliens, furries, "humans". The giant ant
The cute little animals
The neighbors that ban the puffs
The hippies

>Top superpower/technique
This is a tough one because I don't recall anything outside of the conventional ones and some that were shown once in the Butteecup isn't special episode. Their iconic ice breath, sonic screech, shooting lightning or plasma from their hands are just so good, but my absolute favorites are whenever they work together: the bomb slingshot, the solar flare absorption, fire pussy, the nuclear bomb or the razzle dazzle that stopped Dynamo. Honorable mention to the ruffs fart jet, speed + smoke + bio weapon, it's just insanely useful

>Final episode
And I can't say the musical special? You bitch. I'm asuming nothing else gets made after the one I choose. Ironically, Clipsville, one big fuck you to the fans. But for something more honest, either the one where they are normal humans, the knock-offs or HIM's nightmares. They feel the most like proper send offs, which to be honest no episode feels like that.

If you meant the pants or rulez specials, then I choose the musical, no contest.

Easy, Mojo returning to monkey to reveal his most fool proof plan yet. It even has the return of Steve, now king of monsters, to celebrate their first monster anniversary. Everything else are just episodic chapters that are so short they're not worth remembering.

Are the comics worth reading? They're from IDW?
>>
Do you have something such as a the perfect ppg episode? I don't, but some come close. Knock it off, See me Feel me Gnomey, Rowdyruffs 1. None reach the perfect status cause they're always lacking something, be it action, pacing, drama. However, and since this a cross thread, Dexter has two perfect episodes, one is the time travel special and the other is with the japanese exchange student. And Samurai Jack... fuck I watched it twice and I can't remember most of them. Gonna put the episodes with the hunter lion aliens, the mercenaries, blind archers. It's full of excelent fights and great moments, I don't know if there's anything I can call perfect. Closest there is are the first 3 episodes of s5. That was the absolute peak of that show.

Personally, the IDW are the best. They made the three long arching stories of Mojo Jojo renouncing evil (the one I mentioned), and the crossovers Super Secret Crisis Wars and Smash Up (the weaker of the three, it's ok at best). I like them because they take their time to tell a solid, short story. Good balance with action and the characters are faithful to the shows.

The DC comics are second best only because of its art style, which is the same as the show. The stories are not bad, they have good premises, but they are so short, SO SHORT, you can't enjoy them, it's over right before you know it, because they would put like two or three episodes in one short comic. I do remember someone said Buttercup is better characterized here (and probably Bubbles), and I agree.

Dybamite comics are thrid and not by a wide margin, frankly it's hard to put it here cause it's the polar opposite of DC. What it does good is what the other does bad. The artstyle brings it down hard, because it's inconsistent every chapter and way too experimental. Ironically also its strength, I like they do it, I dislike the result. However, the chapters are longer, so they get better developed and Buttercup says "crap" somewhere. It's also the one that gets the most fanservice, as in nostalgic references and shipping (the girls sing the Cartoon Cartoons song in one chapter, Utonium almost kissing Sedusa, Buttercup x Butch moment, etc.)

They are all fun to read, with varying degrees of quality.

>Do you have something such as a the perfect ppg episode? I don't
Neither do I. For Samurai Jack I can at least say the cemetery/zombies episode.
For PPG you have to treat it like Moomin Valley where you have to watch episodes in batches to get an idea of the full picture.
Knock It Off has good story and drama but bad action and it takes too long to get the final boss fight that doesn't last long.
Cockroach, Nanobots, Zombie Wizard, Boogeyman have good setups but they eat up 50% of the episode. And the 20 minute episodes from season 4 are too stretched instead of utilizing themselves to fix earlier episodes' pacing issues by combining 2 episodes' pros into 1 episode.
Candy Jar and Rowdryruff Boys have a good intro and lots of fights with Mojo Jojo and the interesting

Tough Love if it had some monster fighting would have been good cause it plays with the cutesy Townsville loves the PPG and then Him just mind controls everyone and the PPG kicks everyone's asses. I'm surprised it was a season 3 episode cause it feels much earlier and too much about the PPG's roots as an Astroboy cartoon.
Octi Evil is a good one cause it has the correctly done drama and monster fighting sequences but the ending is once again a cop out where the octopus explodes on its own.
Both of these episodes have an ending that feels like there was more to it like with Octi Evil it seems like Him died forever.

Him Diddle Riddle is interesting, but it's an experimental episode, actually a lot of PPG episodes are ridiculous and experimental and I kept mistaking them for Savino episodes. They feel like the plots of comic books with shit like Mojo Jojo disguising himself as a little girl at the PPG's party or Mojo Jojo becoming their babysitter.
Sandman is an episode not many bother remembering cause again too long of a setup and it's highly experimental. If we took the Sandman episode and combined it with the Him dream episode then it would have made for a good episode.

Candy Jar and Rowdryruff Boys have a good intro and lots of fights with Mojo Jojo and the interesting robots Mojo uses and the abilities the RRB use. It's actually too bad they didn't use more abilities like in the galactus, crayon episode and the Savino abilities episode... when you do give these storyboard artists more time they always waste it for no good reason.

But anon, think of the shipping

I seriously thought that was a Savino episode when I saw them doing the rehearse plot bullshit. Normally you keep that for a clipshow or a timetravel episode. Craig is weird.
>>
>>154773843
>Craig cannot take himself seriously worth a shit
I wonder how much of it was his own and the episodic restriction.
How different Dexter and PPG would have been if they didn't have the non linear plot restriction.
I would be able to answer the first if I watched Yonder and Cosmic. The latter I hear people trash talking it, and one review that defended its story and sounded pretty good.
>>154773656
But, you know, it's not crazy to think he just wanted to use this show to experiment and didn't handle it very well. Hence why he quite after s4, saying he ran out of ideas. Then Saving and Lauren stepped in with more ideas, but even crappier executions.
>>
*hence why he QUIT
*Then SAVINO and Lauren
>>
>>154774151
Craig's an idiot for not sticking to his guns like he did in the infamous Rainbow the Clown episode where he didn't deserve the ending he got when he was clearly shown to us the audience turned evil because the chemicals in the traffic accident spilled and corrupted him, but nah let's have a status quo ending after the fact we just had a feel good song about love and all which cured him and thanking the girls only to get get the crap beat out of him and thrown into jail for not being in control of his actions like what? Even as a kid when I watched the episode the ending pissed me off and it's probably my first instance in any form of media how a terrible ending can ruin what was otherwise a great episode and or series. I find it hillarious when people say Powerpuff Girls wasn't mean spirited like other cartoon cartoons but nah it absolutely can be unless you just conveniently wiped your memory of the poor ones.

Series creator Craig McCracken later stated that he regretted the harshness of that final gag, admitting it was a heavy-handed choice influenced by network production pressure rather than a fitting narrative close.

This is why Craig's a bitch for not sticking to his guns unlike based chad Danny Antonucci.
