What recent comics would you consider to be Storytime-of-Pain tier?I nominate Deniz Camp's Ultimates. It's just so horribly limp-wristed, corny, and ugly.
>>154794703Dead Language. The penultimate swan song for BND, holy shit. The OMD status quo has finally fermented.
I'd say Ghost Rider: Spirits of Violence or that Harley Quin fart comic, but they already got posted this weekend
>>154794703Captain Marvel Dark Tempest maybe, but it might be too boring and I'm just remembering the cringe dialogue
"Recent" might be pushing it, but picrel probably qualifies even if it is from 2022
I remember someone said they wanted to post Nothing Butt Nightwing
>>154795652That was such a nothing comic.
I don't want to say the one I'm thinking of because I don't want to see it again and their were multiple outstanding issues that made it awful since the main creative team should have been good. But Ultimates isn't bad enough to bother with it. Not good, but mostly mediocre and just falls into mostly bad when doing the last few issues.
>>154796979>I don't want to say the one I'm thinking ofIs it superhero or non-superhero?
>>154794703Faggots like you are the reason these SoPs almost died the last few years. Don't post shit you personally hate or don't like due to politics post ACTUALLY genuinely bad shit. Fucking hell Ultimate Wolverine deserves more of a spot
Ultimate Endgame might be bad enough to include, but The Ultimates has a strong start with the team building and initial run-in with the Hulk. It's in the second year that the quality declines, which I largely attribute to the real-time gimmick and the universe getting a cancellation date. Like the issue about that civilian could have been a fun change in perspective, but in practice it just uses up the very limited amount of time we had to spend with the team. But Endgame failed to make Howard's return satisfying and said the Maker with a millennium of prep time would fail to come up with any unique ideas. I didn't like the art either, and the Death & resurrection of Spider-Man was dumb.
>>154794703You've got to be fucking kidding me. SoP isn't a comic you didn't like. It's an atrocity that you wonder how it was made. Go read Girls or Trouble. Those are SoP comics.
>>154797147Ultimates is ACTUALLY genuinely bad shit.It has little to do with politics, except for the fact that Camp waves it in your face constantly. Most of my favorite comics express leftist sentiments.>>154797352There was no strong start. The whole beginning and the fight with the Hulk are fucking awful. Its redeeming qualities are essentially tiny details and concepts that don't play out.The real-time gimmick finished it off, but it was so poorly conceived, I don't think it could have ever been good.
>>154797441What about this?
>>154797459>Ultimates is ACTUALLY genuinely bad shit. Can you actually explain it because I can fucking explain why Ult Wolverine deserves the spot over a petty vendetta>There was no strong start. The whole beginning and the fight with the Hulk are fucking awful. Its redeeming qualities are essentially tiny details and concepts that don't play out.The real-time gimmick finished it off, but it was so poorly conceived, I don't think it could have ever been good.Oh shit you can't fucking explain it, it's pure fucking vibes with you
>>154797479Yeah that's dumb but that's like saying a comic has the worst art because of one derpy face.
>>154797479That's not good (or rather awful) enough to be Storytime of Pain tier
>>154794703Tom King's Wonder Woman would be more deserving of that spot.Same with the one Dark Crisis tie-in with Mr. Mapsogopdfbopawoepqropq's little chud son and maybe some Paul stuff. Perhaps X-Men Green too. A lot of what you guys complain about is just way too milquetoast to get upset over. Something like Age of Revelation is "bad" but it's nowhere near the worst. Stuff like that's bad but in a kind of insultingly mediocre way where it just isn't even fun to storytime.
>>154797557Everything was bad. After several issues, I still didn't care about any of the characters, their world, or their plight, as all of that was poorly and weakly written. The villains they fought were duds, their fights dull and badly choreographed. Everything else was sociopolitical. Camp chose to proselytize rather than provide an enjoyable narrative of any kind. All of the fan service, from these gay name puns to the named attacks in the Hulk fight, are corny and come off as phony. Like Camp felt it beneath him to work on this IP. It was entirely creatively bankrupt, uninteresting, and not fun in the least.>>154797658>>154797676Outside of these unfunny little gags, it's not any better. These are just especially cringeworthy.
>>154797912I distinctly remember /co/ liking the Power Man issue. And it was actually pretty good.
>>154797932/co/ has bad taste. Remember when they were praising the shit out of Tom King?
>>154797932It was pretty funny to see Luke Cage take over the prison and everyone shouting "ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE" while flexing. Like some kind of cheesy blaxploitation film.
>>154797912How does corny wordplay suggest Camp thinks he's above the IP? That's the exact sort of thing that implies he's having fun with the story. If the series was being ultra-gritty like some of the Marvel Netflix shows, which turned their noses at their source material, then I would agree. However, The Ultimates does not shy away from colorful costumes or bombastic supervillains, so I can't see panels like the one you've chosen as evidence that Camp thinks he's too good for the comic. The Fantastic Four issues following four different times in Reed's life simultaneously was a creative use of the medium and good character work for a guy that's constantly stuck in the past after realizing his life was stolen from him. The style switch-up in the Thor issue is less unique, but still far from "bankrupt".>uninteresting, and not funThis is too subjective for me to really contest, so I'll be brief. I found the freedom fighter angle to be squandered, but not uninteresting. The second half wasn't fun aside from that Guardians of the Galaxy spotlight issue, but I think the first half was plenty fun, which was probably meant to give more gravitas to the brutal takedown they faced in Kun Lun.
>>154797441I feel like I haven’t seen a Girls SoP for a while, but maybe I’ve just missed it. Truly The Room of comics.
>>154797912The only real annoying parts to me were the Guardians of the Galaxy ones. Everytime they spoke it felt like i was reading about a group of Mary Sues.
>>154798337It's sadly been passed over many years because it's such a long series. It's a real commitment but it's worth it because it's stupid all the way through. One year someone's going to post it again.
>>154798129/co/ loved his Vision and Omega Men comics but opinions went 180 right after that. I think the last King comic /co/ liked was the Darkseid War Green Lantern one shot. And the Batman and Elmer Fudd comic.
>>154797479Not bad, stop trying to force this.
>>154794703Ultimate Spider-Man.It's just subpar TV drama for housewives, minimum effort because too many readers will buy any shit as long as they get Peter and MJ married.
>>154798498Subpar doesn't make it SoP material.
Absolute Supes
>>154798498You're still seething about the Ultimate line, huh.
>>154798516As much as I hate Jason Aaron, his work in the Absolute line isn't bad enough to be SoP material.
>>154798538Yeah I don't get some of these choices. It's bringing to mind how mid a lot of choices for SoP have been for the past few years.
>>154794703Ultimates wasn't even remotely bad enough for Storytime of Pain. There's a huge difference between "not good" and "so offensive to good taste that it's fascinating." Ultimate Wolverine is closer, but even that isn't quite that bad.
>>154797897True
>>154797897Tom King WW deserves to be SoP material
>>154798195>That's the exact sort of thing that implies he's having fun with the storyNo, that's what he wants you to think. Like here, I'm throwing you retards a bone. The first Fury issue was full of that. The gritty fags have more fun being gritty.>The Fantastic Four issues following four different times in Reed's life simultaneously was a creative use of the medium The first instance was the best issue of the lot, and I agree that it was using the medium more creatively, but it was kind of a waste to do this for the entire issue, then again for another, and not a great read due to the gimmick. >and good character work for a guy that's constantly stuck in the past after realizing his life was stolen from him. I disagree. It was more focused, sure, but it didn't make him compelling. >The style switch-up in the Thor issue is less unique, but still far from "bankrupt".Him switching styles on issues was not what I was referring to, nor the narrative approach. These are more gimmicks, especially if they don't gel with a fun and meaningful story.I was talking about the superheroics, the worldbuilding etc., the substance bits. The freedom fighter approach stunk, just a page from current events, which is not especially creative.I'll concede that it may not be SoP worthy, but I felt genuine pain reading this shit. I did it to hurt myself, but mostly to drill into my head the state of modern comics, as presented by an up-and-coming writer. It burned me so bad that I still haven't picked up where I left off on Absolute Martian Manhunter, which was issue 6, though it could be said that I just wasn't very taken by that comic in the first place. Still love the art.>>154798416Yeah, that was horrid.
>>154798482Those are all bad comics. I never bothered with his Batman or Wonder Woman runs.>>154798496It's really fucking bad.
>>154798701Nigga stop being a bitch and read more comics
Ultimates starts really strong, and has some genuinely great moments like the Doom issue. It's when the main Avengers basically just stop showing up and get replaced by Cage and company and Camp begins his soapbox preaching while nothing meaningful happens that it becomes unreadable, but there's enough good in the first half of the run that it wouldn't fit as an SoP
>>154798716It's not compared to what is usually storytimed during SoP weekends. If you think Ultimates is in the same category as Girls or Our Love Is Real then you might be actually retarded.
>>154798724>Camp begins his soapbox preaching while nothing meaningful happensThat was there since the beginning.>>154798721>>154798734You want me to read more bad comics? For what?
>>154798755Camp always preached but at least the book was leading somewhere. After the Hulk fight the run lost all redeeming qualities
>>154798755I want you to grow a pair and kill yourself
>>154798767I suppose so.>>154798772What's with the conniption?
>>154798834What's with you still being alive?
>>154798847It's for the best.
>>154794703Spoken like someone who has never experienced a SoP-tier comicIf you want an actual recent comic that is SoP-tier, it's Ayodele's Storm
>>154798337The trouble is you can't post it here because the mods will get uppity
Have any of the recent What If? one-shots been bad? I feel like we peaked with Miles as Thor
>>154798129>Dude you guys gotta read Grayson. It's a spy book written by a real spy.I remember.
>>154796280Has that even finished yet?
>>154800079Why? It used to be posted here without issue.
>>154794703This looks awesome. How did they fuck this up?
>>154801066I'm guessing all the nudity and guro might have something to do with it. iirc it was last storytimed on /trash/
>>154794703Donny Cates' Hulk. It's so bad that it has been nearly entirely ignored it.
Has there been an SoP for Aaron's Punisher run from a few years ago? You know, the one where Frank becomes a god and they bring his wife back just to divorce him.
>>154800749Grayson was good because Seeley was tard wrangling King, telling him that Dick Grayson would not be a mopey depressed guy with PTSD.
>>154799347This, Ayodele's Storm is actual fucking garbage, especially with how it endedX-Manhunt should also be considered SoP-tier
That one weirdo who posted Scott Adams' novellas got me thinking - is there a /co/-related short story that was complete and utter dogshit?
>>154801982>Grayson was goodNo
>>154798734Girls is at least amusing in its shittiness. This one's mostly joyless, even when it tries to be funny.>>154799347I would never read that.
>>154802048Oh yeah that one was terrible
>>154803072>I would never read that. That's your problem, innit?
>>154802048What a fucking Mary Sue Storm has become
>>154803072Girls is not amusing in any way whatsoever. It's painful to say the least.
>>154797557NTA but every issue of Ultimates ends with this meme
>>154805656This is hilarious >>154797441
>>154805656
Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring
Tom King's Jenny Sparks was horrible, even for him.
>>154794703Ultimates was actually good even if the ending dropped the ball.A real storytime of pain is Death of Silver Surfer, Age of Revelation, X-Manhunt, or the Dazzler mini.
>>154807421>Ultimates was actually goodNot even close.
>>154807421>Death of Silver SurferAh fuck
>>154806775That's one scene from 24 issues. I get that you have a hateboner for Camp but you are being retarded on purpose.
>>154794703Ultimate Incursion. Actually you can put anything by Cody Ziglar in SoP.
>>154807820I liked Camp's older comics a bit. They showed promise. These are also funny >>154806900 >>154807858.Based on what I've seen of Girls, I'd have a much better time with it than with Camp's Ultimates.
>>154807910>Based on what I've seen of Girls, I'd have a much better time with it than with Camp's Ultimates.Without a doubt you would. The fun is reacting and seeing everyone else's reaction as well. It's a girls vs boys episode dragged out the entire series and everyone is a psychotic asshole making the dumbest, worst choices. Cursing and saying the most random shit. I won't even spoil the finale where everyone fights a giant---
>>154807215TK's writing is sometimes exaggerated, but Jenny Sparks was genuinely unreadable. Even using her character in the 21st century is an awful idea.
>>154807968It was clear King didn't understand the concept of Jenny's character
>>154807910Ultimates is not even Ultimatum levels of bad
>>154807014That definitely went nuts in a weird way
>>154808689>UltimatumNow THAT'S a SoP comic. It's bad and entertaining!
>>154794703Storytime of Pain is a stupid ass concept. Why would you willingly read bad comics? The good ones are bad enough.
>>154794703The whole of Hickman's Ultimate universe was shit.
>>154807858This is how Obsession shoud've ended
I'm gonna assume recent should be this decadeDC>Dark Crisis: Young Justice and Tim Drake: Robin >Taylor's "Superman">Black Manta redemption>Hawkgirl>That Joker miniseriesMarvel>Spencer's Chameleon Conspiracy>Slott's Clone Conspiracy>Paul/Dead Language>FemThor>Any Miles series>Bloodhunt>Any Ironman comics>Any Xmen DoFP knockoff
>>154794703SoP is for bad books. That right there is the opposite unless you're genuinely retarded.
>>154797479That panel? You're just too sensitive
>>154805709No, it doesn't
>>154811858I mostly agree.
>>154794703this was still good imo until when they get killed by hulk, aftyer that it was following up on way too many threads and some of them were handled in ridiculous ways like the two thor-dedicated issues.worst example tho remains A WHOLE ISSUE wasted on some fucking nameless dyke without superpowers that has absolutely no relevance to anything whatsoever. what the fuck were they even thinking
>>154797147UW was underwhelming but now that everything is concluded, I'll say that it will hold up better than most. at least it offered some cool things like angel, the sentinels etc. everything rushed of course, but that was the whole line
>>154811858>Dark Crisis: Young JusticeThis is the only SoP worthy addition. So bad it kept shitposters fed for months. Tim Drake Robin series is close. Everything else reeks of the same problem OP and some anons in this thread have. It can't be something you don't like. It has to be BAAAAAAD!
>>154812306Such a slap in the face for fans of the original run
Any recent events that are SoP-worthy?
>>154811886No one likes it anymore, bro.
>>154813564Raid on Graymalkin or X-Manhunt
>>154813564All Events are pretty trash.
This is just actual dog shit. I read it for the book club at my LCS and almost didn't finish it.
>>154801341Anything by Cates is bad
>>154794703Ultimates is mid at best, but is not the same level of poorness Marville, Troubles, Ultimate Adventures or Ultimatum.
These are the comics I'd add to the next storytime of pain:DC>Futures End >Heroes in Crisis>Brian Michael Bendis LoSH >Tom King Wonder Woman>Black Label Jenny SparksMarvel>Mockingbird >X-Men Green>X-Manhunt >Dazzler >Storm
>>154817016>Ultimate AdventuresWhat makes this one so bad?
>>154807215it was unbelievably bad
>>154794703Supergirl by Tom King. Yeah it has some really great art but holy shit it is painful to read through.

Anything Tom King related for the last 10 years is sop material
>>154796899A bad nothing or a mid nothing?
>>154818387Visions enjoyers, we're safe from SoP
>>154818519"Nothing" is bad in itself. For me, it's way worse to be boringly bad than to be laughably bad.
>>154817763>>154817016Ultimate Adventures was great. I mean sure, it's an early 00s Batman TAS parody, but it's really entertaining and it could survive on its own too.
Rosenberg's x-men. People tend to overlook it because krakoa immediately follows but I can assure everyone that is not familiar with it: it gets much, much worse than anything krakoa shat out. Yes, even green or anything by percy.
>>154818563His Vision is quite bad, however.
X-Men Green should be SoP material
>>154820354Which one is that?
>>154821442i think it's the one that ruins the shit out of nature girl
>>154821507Yes, it's the one where Nature Girl goes from a quirky enviromentalist to a deranged eco-terrorist.
>>154821536and just to be clear we're talking "murders an innocent cashier with scissors over the existence of plastic bags" derangedit's trying to one-up the most villainous things Poison Ivy has ever done while also trying to make them somehoe sympathetic. even in Ivy's literal ongoing she's not supposed to be sympathetic for the harm she's done.it reads like it was written by a fucking psychopath.
>>154821536>>154821507>>154820354>>154821609I know almost nobody cares about Nature Girl but X-Men Green is a great example of character assassination.
