I have yet to see an actually good indie animated series
They all have shit animation, terrible writing, mediocre voice acting and shoddy editing
When are we going to admit that the studio system is needed
>Inb4: the industry is worse
1. The industry up to the mid 2010s was great
2. I'd argue that even the worse studio cartoon is better than the best indieslop

I have done indie shit a few years back
Miserable experience. I know what I'm making is shit and the result isn't rewarding in the slightest. I just don't think good shows can be made this way
You need teams of experienced animators
Seasoned, preferably Harvard level writers
Pro composers
Top notch editors
Good cartoons can only be made with an actual budget. Guerilla indie fare will always be inferior. Making my cartoon was a humiliation ritual. I'd kill to be in the shoes of a successful industry creator, hell I'd settle for glitch. They're actually climbing the ladder.
I'm a complete nobody with an average life, my stories are never going to match up
Ordinary people just aren't interesting or smart enough to write compelling stories. That's a big reason why wagie plots are so common. Working in retail is the most excitement many of us will ever see. Meanwhile Simpsons writers were on the fucking Harvard lampoon

Unironically, I liked the one in your pic. The "this was ok" kind to watch once, a bit of normality and simplicity to break away from all the other high energy or dynamic stuff I tend to watch. I can't say the same for OP's show, that was boring. I don't remember any other of this kind.

>shit animation

>mediocre voice acting
Shit man do you want all of the above for a perfect cartoon or what?
The fuck are you expecting out of Indie animation. I'm not excusing bad aspects but that's a tall fucking ask when you start asking grade schoolers for Mozart and the Bible. Fuck even Hazbin Hotel S2 has some fantastic animation if you, say, opened your eyes. I'd argue at least most indie's have 'one' of the three done well enough.

And second, Let me guess: You watched Glitch, Hazbin, and Catching up and drew your conclusion there? I might be giving you too much credit though.
>Well actually I'd argue the average Marvelslop movie is better than the best Peacock Original series!
What kind of fucking scale is this? The big budget Spongebob and Mickey Mouse is better than a Newgrounds Flash cartoon? Gee where did you draw that conclusion?

>>154800109
most indie animation sucks because most of the people making it are either making decisions solo or have a group of yes-men who agree with stuff because it's "cool" or "funny"
these people need editors or suits or just a friend who can be brutally honest that will tell them what decisions are completely retarded. but unfortunately we live in a world where "haters gonna hate" and "just let people have fun" so nobody is going to actually tell these people that their ideas suck because that's "mean" or whatever.
and pretending that industry cartoons > indie cartoons is dumb because let's not forget all the dogshit canadian cartoons that came out in the 2000s and 2010s were from the animation industry
>>
>>154801318
I'll take gravity falls and adventure time and even TTG over most indie fare
>>

There are some "good" indie shows, but none that I would call my favorite. I think the deal is that these are all made by people who have little to no experience in making serialized cartoons, so stuff like the writing isn't going to be as polished as something you'd expect to see on an actual TV network.

Flashgitz (Space King), Worthikids (Bigtop Burger), Joel G (ENA), Speedo (Punch Punch Forever) and Piemations (Suction Cup Man, Mike and Zach, How2Be Cool). Even if I don't like them all, they are among the highest quality indie shows creators. They struggle a lot with money tho, Piemations owns his team money and CrazyBoris stopped Dungeon Dynamite.

There are also machoboyanim (anna-logue), marcocardenas2D (PxAY OFF) and sandbaganim (Blop Bros). Also great so far, but few videos, so we have to wait to see how it turns out. Make Originals, who do short, shorts series.

There's another dude who seems good, but I forgot his and show name. They were like really ugly people in a mundane city. The episode I watched was the protag's little brother went to meet some online players cause of some misunderstanding. The kid and bro had like crow noses and others were just super malformed.

I also want to mention Crash Maul an SFM animator who made Epic Scout, Rabid Taming Engineer and The White Spy. He's one of the best action animators out there.

Lastly, I wasn't sure about putting these here, but worth the mention. Asatoshi, a blender animator who makes realistic martial arts fights with girls. And zen-vy8ce, an MMD? animator who made a short militar movie, and it's very realistic.

I especially hate what the indie scene has become because now you're in an ecosystem with projects that are costing hundreds of thousands of dollars
>>
>>154800142
I would go a step further in if you don't have the funds from donation or studio backing your next best bet is industry level professionals/recent grads/anyone with formal level of training whos willing to do the project for pennies or because they like you.

Which is a networking or making friends skill and I'd argue majority of indie creators don't have that skill.

You're right you need IV or respected program level writers, everyone knows this. Just because it's a cartoon a script is still a script. A show that's not the most beautiful to look at will be saved by amazing writing and with the money that comes in from the attention can be used to polish the look.

I have a friend who went to Harvard for undergrad then UCLA for Masters for writing. They have a cartoon in mind and wanted art, I was more than happy to provide that. The exchange? They write for me with some friends for my project and polish my horrid writing or point me in the right direction.

Indie people unironically don't have a respect for the craft and every aspect that goes into it. They want to see their OC's get popular and hope if it's pretty that's enough or edgy. Too many times people have broken down what made an animated movie or show good from the writers, composers, animators, designers every aspect that made it amazing. They aren't detailed oriented.

That's why something like lackadaisy is successful, from the jump industry professionals and care. The creators had been making that comic for decades, expanding their networks and when the time came she hit the ground running.

100k isn't a guarantee for views for these indie pilots. Most of these pilots piss money away and you shouldn't let these inflated budgets get you down. You can have a 100k dollar pilot flop with maybe 200k views and 0 fanbase or studio interest. What gets success is a gamble but you don't need thousands to make it big. Skibidi toilet was racking in millions of views on a cheap budget meanwhile Monkey Wrench barely cracks a million with 60k down the drain.

It’s funny you’re using Catching Up of all indie series to bitch when episode 2 was extremely funny. Say what you want about LSMark but there’s a massive quality jump between episodes so he’s clearly got some talent and listens to feedback.
>>
>>154804664
I wonder what he did differently
>>
>>154800109
My biggest issue with the whole thing is that animators are now spamming ""pilots"" like some sort of attempt to be greenlit, despite having no intention to be a real cartoon. Like some sort of buzzword.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAhoRD94yo8
I've enjoyed the past 2 episodes of Terminal's Nabiu little series, but calling this a pilot when it's just a webtoon being created in his leisure time and uploaded at his own pace... It's just not a pilot, it's just a web cartoon.
>>
>>154800109
Post what you concidering a good cartoon. I need to make sure you just aren't industrycuck looking to fling shit
>>
>>154804595
This wouldn't work, largely because the problem is logistical rather than production-wise. Besides, most AI users aren't interested in making a good series. They just want to generate erotic material of their waifu and make money that way, since it's a hundred times easier than sitting down and making a good story from start to finish. You think I'm lying, but consider this: despite the technology having better technical skill than 99% of artists and animators, we have seen zero actual good original standalone AI-made shows. Not even pro-AI people want to touch any AI generated series. They'd rather make AI fan art of original human-made shows. Believe me, I was actually hyped to see new AI media, but so far nothing has shown up that's worth talking about outside of being a tech demo.

People need to undestand Indie shows are structured exactly like the "studio stystem" and that's a bad thing. Indie shows need to move away from the same formats that tv/streaming have. You'll never make a full season of an animated sitcom with indie budget hell even streaming services are having a hard time making seasons longer than 8 episodes every three years.
A lot of this guys want to be show runners more than they actually want to be artists/creators. It's infuriating watching YouTubers looking for writers and storyboarders fot their shitty projects. Motherfucker you're poor you're barely starting write and storyboard this shit yourself it really is the bare minimum. Literally whos, expecting a whole writer's room working for them on their first pilot on YouTube. ToonrofiqTariq has FDSignifier as a writer for his show. WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU PAYING SOMEONE THAT DOES POLITICAL AND RAP VIDEO ESSAYS TO WRITE YOUR CARTOON!?
Keeping the same structures as TV but without any money to back it up just ends up with a shitty project made by a bunch of artists that are getting exploited worse than if they were working for the big baddie studios.
Make short stuff limited animation experiment a little. A lot of this guys want to have their cake and eat it too.
>>
>>154805370
Streaming services don't make seasons longer than 8 episodes due to corporate decision and not from capital loses.
>>
>>154805370
It's mainly because standards for internet animation have risen exponentially for both audiences and creators since Hazbin Hotel.
People want 30 min runtimes, fluid animation, TV quality writing all on an indie scale and it just isn't possible

>>154805871
This. Why would I waste time even on a bunch of subpar shorts? That will likely just be retconned anyway if you get a budget. I want actual TV grade writing/pacing/animation or I don't want it at all, plain and simple. You don't make compelling art any other way. If I have to wait 2 years for 6-10 episodes so be it I guess.

>Ordinary people just aren't interesting or smart enough to write compelling stories. That's a big reason why wagie plots are so common. Working in retail is the most excitement many of us will ever see. Meanwhile Simpsons writers were on the fucking Harvard lampoon
That's the complaint with many cartoons coming out of Hollywood, that it's the same story being told by rich kids who attended CalArts. I thought the indie scene would fix that, now that people from all walks of life can publish their own stuff, but it's still the same core ideas being retold.

>>154800142

The reason why the indie scene has such piss-poor writing is because a staggering amount of would-be writers (scriptwriters or artists doubling as writers) do not read enough books, watch enough movies, or read enough scripts. On top of that, everyone is paradoxically encouraged to "write for yourself" while also "writing what you know" which means the inevitable end result is:

>extremely mundane and uninspired
>very amateur
>excessively self-indulgent

There's a reason why Kojima and Araki both stress that creatives (regardless of the medium) NEED to constantly read in order for their writing skills to improve. You may not be a fan of either, but you can't deny that they've gotten better at writing as time has passed on (compared to when they first started).

You mean the Simpsons where the writing was direct, unaltered plagiarism of many other sources from the Twilight Zone to romcoms to plays to TV adverts?
The Simpsons where when they modified what they plagiarised it often made the story gibberish and unrelatable, like Kang and Kodos not wanting to eat humans because haha subversion?
The Simpsons where instead of working retail, he works at a "factory", has a stable income, can afford things, has a wife and 2.3 kids? Damn, imagine living in a world where writers wrote what they knew and wrote constant divorce dramas for rich families that always end happily...

Seriously, why are you praising Matt Slop Groening? His shows are prime examples of the mediocrity of cartoons that kiss the soles of daytime television as if it's jesus's feet

There's an established indie meta now and people try to follow those trends.
Also, since we are several decades deep into modern cartoons, some younger artists are creatively inbred because they have only consumed cartoons and anime, instead of a mix of different media.. literature, theater and so on.

Space King kicks ass and I liked Planetronika (in part because it was pretty short and focused). My three biggest complaints with indies right now is that they're way too long, way too corporate, and are far too similar to each other. Very insular types of people keep making the same show saying the same things and every indie pilot now has to be a 20 minute+ ordeal that conforms to network standards, it's a big drag. Nobody wants to step on anyone else's toes because if you rub someone the wrong way you can potentially blow up your whole career even if it was a complete nothingburger to anyone normal.

That's horseshit. I'm in my 40s and can remember when we had to use this thing called an "imagination." The shit my friends and I would play on the playground in 3rd grade had superheroes, monsters, aliens, all kinds of things. No screens to make us retarded.

>Am I the only one not scared of Cyn?
She's not "scary" in the traditional sense, most find her cool and entertaining and even strangely cute. What's horrifying is her exceptional casual cruelty and doing the most terrible shit to people while being a goofy little autist. I don't think most people find Cyn genuinely scary, she's just a really good antagonist.

>Ordinary people just aren't interesting or smart enough to write compelling stories.
Extraordinary people aren't writing plots for cartoons, nor are they writing for hollywood. Those "Harvard level writers" are sheltered faggots whose most amazing life experience was having their parents pay to get them into Harvard. So they end up being even worse than an ordinary person as a writer, because their entire perception of reality is colored by never really knowing any genuine struggle or hardship.

> imagine live action Cyn puppeting the rotting (?) corpse of live action Tessa
The worst thing is that it's not Tessa's rotting corpse. The Absolute Solver entity assimilated Tessa's body. It's fully capable of assimilating and manipulating biological matter, just like any other matter, and does so frequently. Tessa's flesh is fully alive and functional, and actively bleeds blood. It's not a desiccated rotting corpse draped over a robot, it's a robot possessed by an eldritch void demon fused and merged with the body of a human girl who said demon promised "I will not discard you"

The greatest cartoon in the indie scene promised so many things without satisfyingly delivering on anything, actively mocked and punished fans wanting something deeper with the lore, stole money from the government to push said degenerate slop, and ultimately amounted to propaganda for modern therapy which has been the source of many of society’s ills as it stands now

TADC is a show that I like to call "30 minute writing prompts". You get hints of something major, the fans fill in the blanks with amazing ideas, and the end result is either nothing happening or a crumb that will be interpreted as validation. Just because the pilot hit 400 million views doesn't mean it's the greatest thing written, only that it's popular. Popular doesn't inherently mean good writing. Hazbin Hotel is the biggest example of this, with TADC being a cut above. Even then, the show ended up being a story about repressed gender dysphoria. I seriously question if anon related a bit too hard about wanting to take estrogen that he's calling it "the greatest indie cartoon"

You'd think with all the fanfiction the Hazbin, Helluva, Murder Drones and Digital Circus fanbases wrote... that they'd at least pay the $30 a month and band together to generate a new AU show based off their fanfiction. It's sad how the older generations appreciate AI while gen-Z completely trash it and gen-alpha is 50/50. The only difference between the true gen-alpha and gen-Z is that ... gen-alpha don't pretend to be millennials and gen-Zers ... gen-Z still clinges to trying to be millennials and gen-X, but completely misunderstanding them entirely. Older millennials just do their own thing clinging to video games gen-X has made. Millennials outgrew cartoons and are focusing on video games instead.

I'm glad I wasn't part of the Hazbin Hotel fandom like with the MLP fandom.
Imagine for 6-7 years the fandom creating their own better fanfiction around the show with 26 episodes per season... and when the show actually airs ... you get something that feels like every DeviantArt millennial's fanfiction from the 2000s without any technical writing expertise in him.
When I heard Amazon was in charge and they even fired the indie voice actors I thought that they were also going to shove some industry writers down Vivziepop's throat so Medrano can actually make something acceptable, but nope. This is why everyone calls her an industry plant. I don't know what kind of ghostwriters they gave her, but they're absolute dogshit.
Feels just like Helluva Boss where literally Vivienne and Seth MacFarlane are the ones writing it and it reall does feel like nuFamilyGuy meets the most boring DeviantArt user possible.
Seems to be exactly like Microsoft that bougth Minecraft for the money laundering and tax write off and forgot to fire Jeb & friends and put some actual talent in charge who can program worth a shit. Executives seem to have gotten too young and lenient on everyone instead of tardwrangling everyone for their own good. These aren't artists, these aren't creatives, these are talentless ugly special Eds people. I want to punch Jeb in the face whenever he complains about "being sold to Microsoft" then quit you swedish retard, just fucking quit. Piece of shit getting paid IBM-tier salaries a month and the swedish talentless hack is complaining together with all his little retards. I wouldn't have gave him a cent and I wold have held him accountable for eating into my profits. That's the kind of parent-executive-boss relationship this new generation needs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJsTa55AAjE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ltzQznquXc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vffu6FG4YP4
But I had the same exact opinion when Netflix cartoons released and I said "Wow finally a good art style... now let's check the writing, voice acting, dialogue ... aand it's shit, but hey still better than TTGO and Adventure Time".

but then I took another look at most 90s and 2000s slice of life shows ... and sitcoms ... and even some 2010s gems like Dan Vs and Mao Mao... and no, no. The technical expertisee between a talented gen-X and older millennial is night and day from an indie show. These 20-30 year olds have no idea what they're doing.

Imagine right now if Pigs Next Door was an actual indie cartoon released in 2026. Since it is only 13 episode long, that's an accomplishment for shit today that's barely between 6-9 episodes PER SEASON. Animation truly is dead. Remember when Gargoyles had a 52 episode season? yes 1 season with 52 episodes 21 minutes each.

what if people just make them just cuz they want to? Maybe it doesn't have to be amazing. Hell it could just be a storyboard. If it appeals to a certain crowd (assuming they see it) then they'll come and find it.
Tamers12345 is unironically a great example of this. It just goes to show it's not the tools you use, but what you make of it. He uses MS paint and Microsoft Movie Maker, yet even he managed to acrue his own autistic following.

So maybe you should focus less on being a corpohomo and focus more on telling the story you want to. Yeah it'll take longer but shit happens I guess.

I told Tamers to fix up his act and try to become the next South Park, but the "kid" and his brothers wouldn't budge.
He still refuses to STOP using that old as fuck text to speech and use the proper AI for all of his stuff like he uses for Celestia but better, he refuses to use voice changers. He still refuses to stop using copyrighted music and just compose things that sound similar to it.
He still refuses to stop the gay shit (ironic since South Park had plenty of gay shit) and concentrate on the jokes and less on the farts (ironic since South Park also had lots of farts)
But it's honestly the text to speech that bothers me the most cause that's 90% of the appeal of South Park where Trey is forced to talk in a quick as hell almost chipmunk voice so he can get the damn dialogue done cause South Park is aired on Comedy Central which only allows for 21 minutes unlike Tamers that goes too insane with 60-90 minute episodes and does nothing productive with them just like South Park messed up with its own pacing with the "specials".

And then we do have Trey who THINKS he's cleaning up his act after the first 3 seasons only to not stubbornly listen that South Park really isn't very good between season 4-8 like he thinks it is.

And then we have another Pokemon x South Park rip off from 2013 where the guy also refused to get a proper script writer and some actual voice actors to do his shit. People mainly don't like it cause he's unironically to edgy and gory and it doesn't mesh well with the attempt at humour he tries. He barely gets like 2/7 episodes done correctly in terms of humour. He also ran into the same problem nuSouthPark ran into where if you don't have a script meant for 71 minute of screentime then don't fucking stretch your 15 minutes worth of plot into 71 minutes.

The problem is indies always are targeting everything.
Stop making animation with designs "for kids". (four fingers, wearing hats inside of cars, etc)

Avoid "wagie plots". Ask ChatGPT about jobs nobody knows about but they pay well, where you can have lots of free time and still have income that could explain how these people can sustain themselves.

Avoid subversion, LGBT themes or therapy sessions.

Most anime writing sucks ass cause they let the original artist write it instead of shoving some intellectual writers down his throat like they should.
There aren't many intellectuals in Japan, they're too busy doing technical engineering work rather than reading intelligent cultural books that opens their mind ... and the other half are busy jumping off a building from working themselves to death and their parents leaving their kids to go buy groceries for themselves at the age of 4.
>>
>>154825509
Anime writing is not that good
Education in Japan is better and animators usually finish high school

So it’s just having a better baseline

They indeed have a better baseline if we got all their autism. I wonder how much of a sperglord you to have to be in Japan or even China to be diagnosed as genuinely autistic when most of them behave and think like 10-14 year old rednecks and sometimes 6 year olds in terms of humour.

They don't write like Canadians at least ... again if we ignore their 12 year old maturity. The most maturity I've seen out of a Jap is 17. They don't behave and write like people who went to college. Their level of philosophy is that of a 14 year old, both their males and females have the same shitty mentality and level of education. They all behave like a combination of 14 year old geeks and 14-17 year old rednecks. They have some decency like not adding farts, shit, etc. like the Canadians but Japs are autistic in other ways.

>>154825764
Just like Amazon did with Vivziepop... they should have shoved good writers down her throat. I understood that Helluva Boss is funded by herself and written by the idiot behind Family Guy (who hasn't worked on it since the first episode) , but I thought Hazbin Hotel was going to be different. They really need to crack down on these dumb kids and teach them some guidelines.
Something tells me that Amazon, Netflix, etc. ran out of good intellectual who are willing to work on DeviantArt Hell spaghetti.
