ITT: /co/ adaptations that are a bit strange and unusual, but you love them anyway.

I'm not sure there's a better example of this sort of thing than X-Men: Evolution. The show makes a lot of choices that I don't quite get. In particular, what was the rationale behind certain characters being turned into high schoolers and certain characters staying their normal ages? Like, sure, Wolverine as his normal self makes sense. But why turn Jean and Cyclops into teenagers but leave Storm as an adult? Why make Toad and Avalanche teenagers but keep Pyro an adult? A lot of choices that don't make sense.

And yet the show absolutely rules, and I love it, and while not every choice makes sense, all of it manages to work. Especially once the Season 2 finale hits and mutants become public knowledge.

>>
>>154809572
I think it makes plenty of sense ngl.
>Jean, Scott, Rogue and Kitty debuted as teenagers
>Kurt didnt, but he was always potrayed as cheerful/fun, and his conflict is easy to translate
>Storm's core conflicts dont translate without changing everything about her as a character. (Also i feel spyke existing made them)
>Beast debuted as a teenager, but not as the intresting beast, and his contrast of big words and being a beast, if he's an older well read man.
Plus the fact that you needed some other older xmen to go with wolverine, and there arent a lot of big name options left.

Pyro's simply cause they didnt need to make him a teenager to make his personality/dynamics work. Unlike collosus/gambit for example.
>>
>>154810484
>>Beast debuted as a teenager, but not as the intresting beast, and his contrast of big words and being a beast, if he's an older well read man.
while i do agree with you, i do also think it'd be really interesting to see a take on Beast when he's a teenager who also just happens to be an eccentric geek

but, yeah, it'd be a bit difficult to keep him a teen. half of the appeal is the school drama side of things, and you can't really get that with Beast. either he has to look normal so he can go to school but he loses his iconic, furry blue look, or he keeps the iconic look but can't really go to school because he looks like....well, like a beast
>>
>>154810710
He could just use the same Holowatch as Kurt.
>>
>>154810710
seems lie they could've done well to just do it like Nightcrawler and give him a human disguise, with the double bonus of his human form looking like his original look anyway.
>>
>>154809572
Best Wolverine.
>>
>>154810747
>>154810748
oh yeah i'm retarded and completely forgot about that LOL

in that case, yeah, i think it'd be cool to see Hank as a teen. an eccentric geeky teenager who's both into the arts and sciences isn't THAT out of the ordinary, and i think that provides a unique dynamic with the rest of the teen cast
>>
>>154810710
Ultimate did that, its okay, but you're missing on a lot of what makes him fun. And with kurt also there, there's no contrast.
>>154810747
In which case it just becomes redundant to have two characters that do the same thing.
>>
>>154811024
To kitty too since she's the tech geek teen.
>>
>>154809572

>The one show where wolverine isn't a violent retard compulsively
>>
>>154811042
>The one show where wolverine is fucking storm
Makes you think
>>
>>154811049
I thought he was fucking storm pretty regularly any time she isn't married to T'Challa (which is kind of silly imo, but Logan's love life being terrible is pretty native to the character)
>>
>>154811063
Silly how?
>>
>>154811063
Oh in the comics he has (sometimes its just implied), and generally those are the times logan's the most chill/co-parenting. Just that none of the other shows implied that, in tas its just in the au, though you get some hints he might have something for her in the episode she's with the alien and he rages out, the anime never says, and in wataxm she was dating angel, though he's also a bit more chilled out in the present so.
>>
>>154811042
>The one where Wolverine isn't simping after Jean
>>
>>154811073
>>154811076
>>154811049
yea... those two fucking made sense
>>
>>154811090
I like Wolverine and Storm together.

>both are very proud of themselves and care for children

Team Dad, Team Mom...why wouldn't they go together?
>>
>>154809572
I was just talking about this elsewhere, the show should have leaned in to it's more non traditional dynamics like scott and rogue instead of just going with jott and a last minute gambit episode to pare off the spare.
>>
>>154811100
Same. Plus they have the nature theme.
>>
>>154811073
>Most notable black superhero marries 2nd most notable black superhero
>Storm's whole Mutant angle is constantly undermined for re-incarnated goddess and African SEX female
>Black Panther kind of hovers around teams being a solo act
It feels forced, even if the actual romance is pretty cute and they sort of fit.
>>154811076
Logan bouncing between an impulsive violent retard and a chill wise teacher is pretty interesting and a compelling enough part of the character I think, but most of the time the dichotomy takes backseat.
>>154811077
This also, one of the weirdest comic relationships. And then there was the implied polycule between the four of them in part of the comics also, kinda freaky
>>
>>154811100
Storm is pretty good with everyone, she always sounds dramatic but caring, weird how consistent it is.
>>
>>154811107
Well that WAS the plan for season 5, after dark phoenix scott and rogue would end as a couple.
>>
>>154811100
>>154811109
See i like them too, but i notice that most Evolution fags only like that he's out of the way for scott/jean and prefer him not with anyone despite how obvious him and storm were in evolution. it's why i cant trust evolution logan fags
>>
>>154811123
Really? Never heard of that, QRD?
>>
>>154811131
I dont care about scott and jean personally, its a fine enough ship but its just pretty eh. Logan/Ororo is my xotp
>>
>>154811141
Iirc it had rachel and cable time traveling to the present, scott being manipulated by the hellfire club into joining (which would have been the stinger), as well as shield agent psylocke.

Dont recall if jean died at the end or just left earth, but it led to scott and rogue becoming a couple.
>>
>>154811131
This show is a lot more enjoyable on rewatch when you ignore the zoomers latching on it for brownie points
>>
>>154811110
Oh you meant storm and black panther. I thought you meant her and wolverine being silly. I agree. It was cute in the ff book, but the buildup was super inorganic and it led to her being sidelined hard. Doesnt help that hudlin clearly wanted it to be a power fantasy. It is better as au material
>>
>>154811169
Where are they even doing that?
>>
>>154811180
Pops up on shitter any time the topic of logan adaptations or hugh jackman gets mentioned.

Funny cause Jackman is a huge storm/wolverine guy. Might just be that he wants to fuck Halle, which understandable.

my list goes:
>Evolution, Watxm, TAS, X-Men Anime, 97, Wolverine Anime.
>>
>>154811226
Dont blame him at all but in either case he's based. Fox Xmen nearly pulled the trigger with them multiple times iirc, but nope jean wank

>>
>>154811107
>outcast "weird" loner girl ends up with the popular, handsome cool guy who, despite being popular and cool, is still sympathetic towards her
>even has her "stealing" him from the popular, pretty girl
they knew their audience consisted of 13 y/o girls, huh?

>/co/ adaptations that are a bit strange and unusual, but you love them anyway.

>The manga of the 1993 mario movie
>Small Soldiere manga made by the guy who did a Zoids mangs
>Kingdom Hearts. All of it I love all of it.
>Batman and Robin
I grew up on BTAS, Adam West reruns so Batman and Robin was like some unholy version of the two
>SUPAAAAAAAIDAMAN
>All the westaboo shit in Daicon IV
>Mainframe's weird oh's
>manga Dinosaurs from a japanese tv guide. As in that sitcom with the dinosaur suits.

Im too lazy to find pics if anyone wants more shit on the weirder things here ill post them

Scott/Rogue is popular TO THIS DAY, both with new teenagers discovering Evo for the first time and with the old fans who are pushing 40 by now.
>>
>>154811833
I wish Rogue could absorb my age...
>>
>>154810778
>>154811042
This show really did have the best use of Wolverine. Him being the cool uncle to the team who gets called in only when shit gets real. Vastly superior to shoe-horning him into being team leader.
>>
>>154809572
Is this the show where Rogue was in love with Scott or am I making things up?
>>
>>154812163
Yes, she's in love with Scott, but the show was canceled before that plot could go anywhere.
>>
>>154809572
Spyke is a shit character and Im tired of pretending he's not. His episodes are the worst and his powers are retarded. Should have been Iceman in that slot on the team. Otherwise pretty kino show.
>>
>>154811222
Goth Rogue is best Rogue, bar none.
>>154811226
>>154811237
I remember in the commentary for X2 Bryan Singer mentioned one of his staff asking if there was someway he could get Hugh and Halle to hook up in the movie.
>>
>>154812163
yes, but she's kinda cringe
>>
>>154811246
No
>>
>>154809572
There's more baffling choices than those, I think.
>Arcade is a random gamer classmate of Kitty who Mystique manipulated into taking over the Danger Room by making him think it was a game
>Omega Red is a gimped one-shot Hydra agent
>couldn't decide if Juggernaut should be a mutant or magic, so they went with both (despite magic barely being a thing in the show outside Storm's one starring episode) and after his first appearance he's just a mindlessly rampaging lunatic who wants to destroy a city for no discernable reason
>Charles's son is a weird combination of Legion, the Ultimate version of Proteus, and OC(s)
>when it would just randomly incorporate wider MU stuff like Kang, Captain America, the Brimstone Dimension (complete with demons) and SHIELD (with Fury) and Hydra (with Viper)
>>
>>154812176
I was under the impression no one liked him.

Jean...
>>
>>154809572
At least X-Men Evolution made the X-Men genuinely heroic and wanting to do good.
And it was also refreshing to see Wolverine as a anti-hero dad figure and mentor instead of how he was in the comics.

It was the tony hawks pro skater era. Every teenager wanted to be a fucking extreme sports guy and video tape his friends doing sick ollies off the curb and shit. Spyke being a cringey ass wannabe x-games skater dude was just a thing of its era. Same with that TMNT reboot where they made them all extreme sports guys
>>
Where's the Rogue art?
>>
>>154813947
What cracks me up is the mandate that they always wear helmets. Like Wolverine has no problem jumping out of a plane without a parachute on account of his healing powers, but he has to put on a little helmet with stupid ears to ride his motorcycle. Or Spyke will bring his skateboard to a fight (for some reason) and will suddenly be wearing a helmet while he's riding it, when no helmet was seen in-hand while he was on foot.
>>
>>154811833
Its decently cute

Wolverine knows as a teacher he must set a good example for his students and Spyke’s seen enough guys get their heads cracked on the pavement to wear his helmet religiously

>>
>>154817324
I wish the Hanna Barbera Thing cartoon had been half as cool as either of these examples. What a fucking egregious waste of the premise that series was. Benjy doesnt even have a rogues gallery, he just fights hoaxes. Not even scooby doo villains but just random guys who got confused for cryptids or bankrobbers. It's like an anti-capeshit cartoon.
>>
The showrunners wanting Rogue to be with Scott after their planned Jean death was fucking wild.

What mutants where on the table? Which weren't? How come they get to have Captain America but we can't get Iceman?

>>154818609
They got iceman, they just had to have a black male member of the team basically. Only marvel character they couldnt use was spider-man.

See this is what i was talking about earlier when it comes to evolution logan wank, when was wolverine ever shoe'd in to being a team leader elsewhere? in Watxm, jean and xavier were gone and scott lost his mind until logan (and Emma) got him to wake up.
Logan's usage works for the story evolution was telling, but there were so many times where the threats warranted the full team dealing with it only for the plot to manufacture a situation where somehow the kids do fine enough until storm and logan come for cleanup because the villains went full retard. case and point, sabertooth in s1. in no way can having spike and scott involved in logan's most iconic rival be considered the best use of logan's character. give me a fucking break
>>154812176
He's also the reason why storm had 1 episode revolving around her. Fuck Spike
>>
>>154819025
Evolution was ahead of the curve ironically; it's the precursor to that trend in the mcu of pushing legacy characters at the expense of relegating big stars to the background.

I really can't fathom what they were thinking with this other than someone wanting to shoehorn Marrow into the cast somehow, but it was completely pointless because Spike was never allowed to do anything more than pin people to walls or make lame obstacles. He could never actually use his powers on anything living, so he may as well have had now powers at all.

You can say this same exact thing about Wolverine. The only thing that rescues Wolverine from being as worthless as Spike is that he's an iconic character with a famous tragic backstory, but lets face reality Wolverine is lame in all these cartoons because he's censored into being useless.
