Veidt would be a Musk stand in and his plan would be nuking to take power not end war between China and the USA.

Hard to tell because Watchmen has a huge influence over comics and Moore was reacting to trends he thought was going to ruin cape comics forever.

i think it would be completely different and about class conscious ecoterrorists. i think the story goes is that moore was going to use actual DC characters to tell the story but he wasn't allowed and had to make his own?

it'd be aquaman, orca, swamp-thing, poison ivy, the question and maybe booster gold. i think it would center around booster gold time traveling to try to fuck with murderous CIA plans, maybe save JFK and the story told through a series of flashbacks concerning the motivations of the other characters changing over time, as capitalism pollutes the planet, wars hurt people all over, probably some really good lectures from swamp thing and poison ivy about plant evolution and plastics in the ocean, and some detective work from the question leading him to the conclusion that the communist manifesto had some really good points

aquaman butting heads with superman when aquaman tries to kill the CEOs of polluting corporations would be obvious. lex luthor might be a target, but also martian manhunter could be another angle, because he would not be down with dipshits like elon musk colonizing mars

He wanted to use Charlton comics characters (Blue Beetle, The Question) but DC was working on folding them into the main universe.

Now you could probably do Watchmen with all public domain characters.

He could never write a character like Veidt with a straight-face in a modern setting. The public would not accept a master martial-artist, captain-of-industry, super-scientist, political genius, master manipulator, silicon valley tech-genius in 2026. He would, rightfully, be laughed out of the room.

We've seen what these types are like when they reach the heights of power, and generally they're awkward, ineffective, clumsy, and easily frustrated by the bureaucracy they're trying to overthrow.

For all their money and power, they are regularly defeated and made fools off by the inertia of a political class and system far more embedded than any of them.

In 2026, he would nuke New York, there would be a few weeks of crisis, and then the US and Russia would resume their antagonism and paranoia, and he would have killed 3 million people for nothing.

It would be a great joke.
>>
>>154833460
Not only would the comics landscape be nigh-unrecognisable, Moore himself would probably be significantly less jaded and bitter in a 2026 where he didn't get fucked over by a rights deal

Anon, you act as if the concept of a superhero CEO who had a flamboyant sense of dress was common in the 80s..it wasn’t, it was a suspension of disbelief for the sake of a comic.
If anything the idea of a highly eccentric billionaire who has his hands active in so many completely different branches is something you’d see more today. Even so you’d be asked to suspect disbelief because Watchmen is still a fictional world that leans into suspension of disbelief even if the framing is that it’s a slightly more grounded superhero world. But the fantastic still exists, characters still act within a narrative, satire logic dominates actual reason in cases.
>>
>>154832425
Do you mean Alan Moore, 72 year old, making Watchmen today or Alan Moore, in his 30s in 2026 instead of 1986, wrote Watchmen today?

This one, i thought about 72 year old Alan Moore too but i think he would have moved on onto other things regardless
>>
>>154838682
Damn, this is kinda tough because, remember that Moore's formative years was growing up reading Silver Age Superman and Marvel, discovering Harvey Kurtzman's MAD

This would be a Moore who's like late Millennial and would've grown up on the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy or something

The superhero genre would have probably been dead, unpopular, or extremely different without Moore. Maybe better, maybe worse. The irony of Watchmen is that it didn't kill superheroes, it gave them a renewed life. All superhero comics and their adaptations that came after were affected, whether they adopted the darkness, fought against it, or tried to do something different.
People like to say that it was actually The Dark Knight Returns, but that was Moore's doing too. Moore and Miller were good friends at the time and they exchanged ideas and competed somewhat. Miller himself has attested to this. After his Daredevil run, he might have gone a different direction, who knows.

Byrne alleges that Watchmen's photocopies at the DC office made him heavily rethink the second half of DK, which is why there's a 6 month gap and the story becomes more about a bigger crisis with the Cold War about to become hot.
DKR did make it to print before Watchmen, but was probably in the books for longer given how intensive Moore writes,

72 year old Moore doing it would do a more scathing attack on the comics industry/superheroes and skewer right and left (people bring up Moore making fun of Comicsgate in LOEG Tempest's final issue but also somehow miss that the letter/response two before was shitting on how people on the left were accusing Moore of being racist and misogynist.) He would probably draw an allusion to how Trump is referred to as The Donald is similar to getting a superhero name, as he did in Tempest. It would also probably be in prose form.

This is a Moore who likely still did Captain Britain and Swamp Thing and all that so there would still probably be something that sets him off and make him leave comics completely.

If Moore was in his early 30s in 2026, his upbringing and influences definitely would've been very different unless you transported 1980s Moore to 2026. He would've grown up with the superhero movies in the 00s, video games, the internet.
>>
>>154832425
>If Alan Moore had made Watchmen today instead of 1986, what would it be like?

Impossible question to answer since comics themselves would be completely different. Not a single comic printed after Watchmen would exist in the form it exists in now. They all were changed by Moore's work.
>>
>>154853583
Exactly.
>>
>>154853583
No, without Watchmen I don't think comics would've changed much. People would've taken inspiration from Moore's Miracleman, Captain Britain, V For Vendetta, and Swamp Thing. Without Moore entirely though, I agree that comics would be completely different.
>>
>>154849814
I'm glad to hear it, its been a journey for me but too many famous artists kept mentioning and referencing the guy (Burroughs is in the direct center of the Sgt Pepper Lonely Hearts album cover and Paul McCartney says he loves him). Moore mentioning Burroughs' comic strip, The Unspeakable Mr. Hart, is what got my attention.
>>
>>154855976
Nice. It was the 'Seven Souls' intro of The Sopranos for me, which linked with mention of Steely Dan. Began to see a lot of my favorites loved this guy. Where did Moore mention The Unspeakable Mr Hart?
>>
>>154856037
When I watched that season 6 Sopranos intro, I was already a fan of Burroughs. I heard his voice and I knew this final season was going to be trouble. Incidentally, Moore was a big Sopranos fan.
I don't know where I read that quote, but the whole interview it belongs is on John Coulthart's (artist of some Lovecraft comics and Lord Horror: Reverbstorm) website:
https://www.johncoulthart.com/feuilleton/2006/02/20/alan-moore-interview-1988/
>>

Watchmen was his breakout hit, though.
>>
>>154855530
>>154855566

>>
>>154858032
He still would've had a strong influence on people even without Watchmen. Creators and future creators were reading his Marvel UK and Warrior stuff during that time. Claremont wanted to bring in Jim Jaspers and The Fury which meant creators were reading that stuff even if the US audience had not. Warren Ellis was reading Warrior Magazine when he was a kid. Even though Most Marvel titles were outselling Swamp Thing, Moore's Swamp Thing was still doing better than the sales on Superman and Batman at the time. (see charts in the old Amazing Heroes magazine for this) I think Moore would've inevitably had a massive hit even if he never write Watchmen. He wrote the Killing Joke script in 1985.
>>
>>154858726
It would be interesting for sure. A weird experiment.
>>
I don't think Moore would've even been into comics if he was born around the 90s.
>>
>George Floyd parallel.
>>
>>154855555
Oh, now you've done it!
>>
Well, for one thing, the Comedian would be an OEF veteran
The new Manhattan would be a quantum AI that would really need to figure out why keeping humans alive is worth any effort
Veidt would actually own Manhattan and by extension run the US thanks to that (the not-Trump would hand him the keys and go golfing)
The retired heroes would have done their service during the actual cold war and not the runup to it, at least one of them dying of AIDS
The actual plot is Veidt realizing humanity is doomed not because of MAD but modern alienation and sets about orchestrating the biggest false flag of all time in Israel: the second coming

It'd never make it to print but the troll potential is enormous
>>
>>154859038
He's in the UK so it's probable, but there's also the possibility he takes in more influence from other stuff that he didn't have in his day, like 00s TV shows, movies, and video games, or the internet. For all we know Millennial Moore also could've read manga and watched anime. Warren Ellis was already reading manga and watching anime in his early 30s, in late 90s/early 00s; I don't know when he started.
>>
>>154859254
The threat of nuclear destruction is still prevalent nowadays hence some nations still wanting to have progams and stockpile yellow cake. If anything, the threat would be more economic. Something like oil just becoming inert one morning because Veidt spread a chemical reaction that saturated the entire globe. This would be his attempt to stop a resource war and decoupling the world from its reliance on the US petrodollar.
>>
>>154859254
>>154859375
>>154859403
I thought about this some more

Moore was born November 1953, started writing Watchmen in 1984 (though he had some idea for a superhero murder mystery prior) and Watchmen got published in 1986

Let's say Millennial Moore was born in 1993, started writing Watchmen or Doomslop or whatever in 2024, and it gets published in 2026
This is a Moore who was like 3 when Tony Blair became PM, 7 when 9/11 happened, and 13 when Tony Blair resigned, which means he likely would've seen some news or other about the War on Terror and all that or heard about it from someone. Whether he'd care about it yet, I don't know. During his 20s he would've seen Brexit, the first Trump term, COVID lockdowns, the riots in response to the George Floyd stuff, and other things. To him Thatcher and Reagan would be prior history since Millennial Moore didn't live through the 80s.
>>
>>154859899
Yes, his Minutemen would closely resemble more to that of the 90s edgy heroes who became "defanged" in the new age of heroes who are ultra-PC-fied or who always harp on the good ol days of the 90s and pre-9/11
>>
>>154832425
he wouldn't make it today because of the absolute state of capeshit
>>
>>154860002
You mean, he wouldnt make it, because he quit comics now.
>>
>>154859375
He'd definitely be more into manga.
>>
>>154832425
He'd be a right winger.
>>
>>154839697
to be fair Moore has always been a miserable cunt, his constant misery and inability to enjoy things made him great at creating dark and miserable comics though
>>
So we just make shit up about him now

I say his bear smell like wildberries
>>
>>154853583
>>154855450
If Moore hasn't written Watchmen, someone else would've have written something else like it. "Great Man" comic History is fucking stupid. It's obvious that things had been trending towards more """adult""" stories since the bronze age. You can argue whether or not another book wouldve been better or worse, but Moore isn't the fulcrum on which the "modern" comic rests.
>>
>>154866666
>If Moore hasn't written Watchmen, someone else would've have written something else like it.

It's not guarantee that it would've had the same impact as Watchmen though. Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme gets compared to Watchmen by some people, but leaving aside the differences in style and more, Squadron Supreme is hobbled by how Marvel handled keeping comics in print or promoting them. Watchmen endured because DC kept it in print and pushed it heavily into bookstores

DC would've still been trying to find talent overseas for their comics and so there still would've been an attempt to court British comic writers, but without Moore doing Swamp Thing there's no guarantee it would've gone as well. Without Moore's Swamp Thing, Gaiman does not get interested in comics again when he did and doesn't get the idea to ask Moore for advice on how to write comics. I think Alan Grant would've still worked on Detective Comics with Breyfogle though. For all we know maybe Peter Milligan, Brendan McCarthy, and others get more popular in the US.

I agree that comics were already getting dark without influence from Moore. You can see this in X-Men, in Miller's Daredevil, in Vigilante, in indie comics like Grips or Chaykin's American Flagg. I still believe Miller would've still written and drawn Dark Knight Returns. Maybe without Moore to inspire it might have some differences but even if you go by the idea that Miller switched things up in #3 and 4 of DKR after reading the early pages of Watchmen, DKR #1 and 2 were solid enough that I think it still would've had the same impact.

Marvel and subsequently Image would've gone mostly the same path in the 80s and early 90s without Moore. People would've been fixated on Dark Knight Returns as the "adult" book to emulate
>>
>>154867135
>It's not guarantee that it would've had the same impact as Watchmen though.
You're misunderstanding what I'm saying. I'm saying that there would have been another book *as influential* as Watchman, even if Moore hadn't written Watchmen.
>>
>>154832425
Trump, troons, faggots and niggers.
