Devil's advocate but it's canon that most telepaths in Marvel have to learn how to *not* read the thoughts of everyone around them. Otherwise they constantly hear everyone's stream of consciousness whether they like it or not. Id imagine a teenager having horny thoughts blares out like a neon sign, at that. Still a bitch move on thier part, tho. Guy cant help it if you're attractive, cut him some slack.
>>
I wish I was a telepath. Telepathy is easily the most busted power in media. It can be either surface reading bullshit or you're an unkillable god. X-Man is a great example. That man takes what is just telepathy on paper and turns it into reality warping.

Marvel canon victim blames telepath victims on a universal scale. Always thought that part of Marvel telepath lore was a bit revolting, conceptually.

I'm not even just talking about Emma or the Cuckoos, it's worldbuilding that literally only exists to make telepaths look better. Nothing but telepaths ever interfaces with it. Randos can't use or detect it, but apparently it's always on, exposing their thoughts to telepaths at all times whether they like it or not.
DC handles it much more competently - generally over there, if a telepath "hears" something someone didn't say, the telepath was prying.

I genuinely want a scene where there's a sudden yet inevitable betrayal, and someone looks to the telepath and says "Why the fuck didn't you warn us?" And they reply "How inconsiderate do you think I am? I don't hop willy nilly into every mind that crosses my path! Some of them are scary."
>>
>>154833659
Yeah I like the idea of telepaths being able to be negatively effected by the minds they read. Like they read the mind of someone who's dealt with a lot of trauma and they'll get traumatized too. Read the Joker's mind and you just get lost in the chaos (i think that one actually happened).

It's funny how all the X-Men's villains are right. Magneto is right that mutants ARE a master race and there's no way they and humans can successfully coexist. Mr. Sinister is right that, the X-Gene has already fucked up the human genome, what's the problem with a little more fucking? Trask, Master Mold, and all the pro-registration figures and politicians over the years are right that mutants are fucking dangerous and it's probably a good idea for the government to keep tabs on them.

To be fair, him describing them as glamorous action movie stars whose clothing “reeks of boastful sexuality” isn’t inaccurate in the slightest, even if he’s basically a supervillain Morlock. For all their understandable molding over how their lives are fucked up and that it’s stupid people should hate them solely for being mutants, they still have each other, they have the bodies of demigods compared to the other 99% of mutants according to all the retcons regarding the mutant population, and usually they have a safe haven to call home. They are genuinely luckier than most writers would like to admit compared to some of the non-mutant freaks that wandering the world, though mostly by comparison.

Let's him stay under the radar. Ruling a small town could get him noticed at which point the CIA would just snipe him, if he's lucky with a bullet to the head, if he's unlucky with a tranq dart so they can experiment on and dissect him. Remember the only reason they didn't just do that in the show was that Jessica had a thing about needing him alive (and not being willing to do the plans that would risk bystanders even a little) so she could somehow get him to exonerate that girl he made kill her parents in court.

Which proves the point in why Emma sucks. Emma doesn't need to be whitewashed and woobie sued at every moment. If they really wanted to show how much a bitch Emma us, they'd admit that everytime she does something bad and tries to get another brown/minority purse puppy to hide behind (Loudres Chantel, Kamala Khan, Isabelle Donovan, etc) she's just going through the motions to garner pity points. Doubly so since they either become subservient lapdogs for her and/or die so she can have a white woman's burden pity party rife with crocodile tears and conniving bullshit galore. It's ironic that the only purse puppy that didn't fall for that shit was that token tranny, Escapade, and that's probably one of the reasons why we don't see them anymore.
>>
>>154833703
I don't like the idea of a traumatized or insane mind "infecting" the telepath looking into it, but the idea that it might not be comfortable to look into another's mind really should be explored more. Like everyone has some kind of traumas, bad memories or experiences, fears, fetishes, intrusive thoughts and just outright repulsive ideas or opinions and other shit that you probably can't sift through without it causing some sort of reaction (mostly a negative one). Like, every mind probably has plenty of dirt and negative shit in it, so it would make sense that a telepath wouldn't want to wade through that shit recreationally. Or you can explore this with showing that the most effective mind-readers are either sociopaths or incredibly jaded by what they see on the regular, and it's hard for rookie telepaths to do this shit because you can't separate the dirt from the information you might actually be interested in, you HAVE to dig through the crap first.

>>
>>154836264
I think what really needs to be explored is the fact there's almost no morally justifiable way to use these powers besides stuff like (non-intrusive) "psi-comms" and fixing messes left by OTHER telepaths. Marvel telepaths have been violating people left and right - and so deeply there isn't a real-life equivalent to it - for decades.
>>
>>154832724
Can you elaborate on the context here? And is this McKay's run?
>>
>>154836045
I feel like the whole mutant cure thing became legitimized by writers making a large number of mutants people who live in constant agony or those who have literally nothing to gain from their mutation.
Just from memory the daughter of that bitch from Civil War had a mutation that caused her to de-age into a fetus and die. I don't even see an upside to something like that.
>>
>>154836567
Worse, Bendis' run. Black kid is one of the brand new mutants that popped up after the whole Phoenix Five nonsense led to thousands of random people suddenly getting new X-Genes (his power is healing people with a touch iirc). Scene is when he first arrived at Rightclops' secret mutant base and noticed the Cuckoos, leading to the OP.
>>
>>154836045
I guess it's worth it to sometimes remind oneself that the world built by Marvel bends towards cynicism. I mean there's any number of evil organizations and conspiracies who have secretly always been in charge of everything. The average person is one sip of warm beer away from gathering a lynch mob. The characters are right to favor pragmatism over idealism because that's the logic of the world. 9/10 times it will be narratively validated. Marvel is plain and simple not the company for stories about the power of mutual understanding and cooperation, because those are always proven wrong in the long run.
>>
>>154836198
You have to be born with the x-gene though
Its why they are such shitbags to spider-man

>>
>>154833659

>>
>>154836696
>>154836045
Same reason sentinels always turn on humanity. Mutants got to be right in the end.
>>
>>154836595
The hilarious irony of this is those mutants were created literally as a "counterexample" to the prevalence of walking-nuke mutants who can level a city block by sneezing, which ALSO necessitates stuff like registration/monitoring/testing and the ability to cure/suppress it. If mutants were real, they wouldn't be allowed on passenger planes without their powers suppressed. If you couldn't register what each mutant's powers were in a database beforehand, you'd have scanners for X-genes basically in every context where there are metal detectors - schools, stadiums, airports, etc. - and you'd have to suppress the powers of even the most harmless ones as a matter of caution.

>>154836686
It is quite often that the people telepath mutants are violating are other mutants.
Hence, >>154832766.

>>154836696
>The average person is one sip of warm beer away from gathering a lynch mob
This is only (well, ALMOST only) the case when an X-Men book needs civilian strawman punching bags for the most shallow "aLlEgOrIcAl" dialogue imaginable.

>>154836733
Eh... this is actually a callback to the original story. They turn on Bolivar Trask almost immediately, in the 1965 story that introduces them. He's actually hesitant to make them, but he gets pushed towards making them as a result of time-traveling mutants (Jean Grey and his own mutant daughter among them) having a massively destructive fight. Trask literally sacrifices his own life to blow up the Sentinels when they turn on everyone.

He genuinely just wanted Sentinels to protect people (his FEAR was them being turned into indiscriminate hunter-killer machines), but nobody on X-Men twitter actually read the original story, and they filter their opinions on him through a game of telephone of acquired opinions formed on the perversion of his vision that the restarted Sentinel project became after he died.

>>
>>154836045
I mean, some mutants just want to be left alone and don't want to use their powers either. Plus, if they make a registration, they'd either have to make a bunch of jobs solely for mutants, or provide mutants with a means to keep themselves occupied and surviving in society. Or put in laws to stop discrimination against mutants from employers. There's also no way to tell if that registration wont just be used to kill the mutants either.
>>
>>154836819
The problem with "Sentinels will always turn on humanity" is that it's only a problem because apparently nobody has ever bothered to create new programming for Sentinels. There is zero reason why a Sentinel should be capable of making that sort of reasoning and logic in the first place. Trask was a fucking anthropologist; him building functional AI-powered robots was a feat in itself so you could excuse the "kill mankind" shit as the unintended consequences of an amateur programmer. Everyone else, looking at you Emma and Sebastian, has zero reason to not redo the massive pile of fucky-fucky that is the Sentinels undoubtedly permafucked spaghetti coding.
>>
>>154837485
The Sentinels will always lose because they wind up fighting for a future where robots (well, mostly them) reign supreme instead of focusing on killing all mutants.

They turned THEMSELVES into killing machines.

I cannot stress enough how quickly they turned on Trask. It's literaly 3 panels after you see their faces for the first time.

Oh, BTW, Jean is actually directly responsible for Trask pushing ahead with the project. It's in issue #-1 of the 1963 Uncanny X-Men. She also mindrapes Trask in the same issue to prevent him from remembering being reunited with his mutant daughter who got kicked into the future by her uncontrolled mutant powers.

This is the storyline where the teen x-men got brought forward into the future by adult Beast to shame adult Cyclops or some other stupid reason. They were arguing about whether they should go back right away or not. But got stuck in the present for a while anyway.
Teen Jean would go on to puppet control Angel a second time. Then after Jean tells Bobby he is gay, no one ever brought up Teen Jean's massive unethical telepathic behaviour again, just purely coincidentally. Ultimately the teen versions went back, and the present versions remembered everything that happened.

I hate mutants. I hate how they are portrayed. I hate the authors misusing genetics. No they are not a "replacement" or a new species, this is clealry some kind of phenotype expressing itself when it previously did not. The gene is present in all human populations. Not everyone has it, but not even all carriers express it. So barring reproductive advantage this is not going to change the frequency of the genotype.

>>
>>154833384
To be fair mutants not only seems to have a worse time controlling their powers like there's been a handful of mutants that awakened their powers and immediately killed their family, school, or hell even a whole town. Does it make sense for people born with their powers to seemingly have worse and less reliable control over their powers than people who got them later in life? No but that's the case so you just got to roll with it. They're also the main source of telepaths and as we have seen telepaths have to be the most evil pieces of shit in comics with no respect for your most personal private thoughts and the even more horrifying capacity to rewrite your mind. When the X men have created a term that designates world ending mutants clearly these people are an issue.

>>154841684
The notion that mutants have their origin in genetics and biology reads like nonsense to me.
There is no commonality between mutant powers supposedly caused by the X-gene.
Even within families of mutants, the nature of each member's mutation can vary wildly.
More critically, these mutations can produce effects that defy the laws of physics or even bend reality.

Let's be real, X-men mutant powers are supernatural/magical in nature.

It's extra retarded because canonically they were an uplifted branch species before modern humans even evolved that got BTFO'd so hard that humanity fucked them to death, both metaphorically and literally because we got the X-gene from plowing Neanderthal pussy, that they went extinct and lost the evolutionary arms race millennia ago, despite the entire experiment breaking down repeatedly and no less than 4 variations of magical supertech functional god-beings all trying to cheat in their favor.

Mutants are unironically a genetic throwback to a failed experiment kept around as the equivalent of a biological war trophy, like if you had photographic evidence of your granddad in Vietnam plowing some slut on top of her dad's corpse. The superiority thing is unintentionally the Marvel universe equivalent of "We Wuz" hotep shit, coping and seething about being a genetic dead end.

>>154841934
I was told it works like a wizard. There's obviously something about him that lets him use magic, but he's still a flesh-and-blood human. So there is a human thing that can let you do magic.

The mutations themselves are obviously an adaptive defense, they're way too relevant to the mutant's situation in life when they mutate to be totally random, and the alternative that some kind of metaphysical destiny is pulling them into situations reflective of foreordained powers is disturbingly possible but ultimately way over my very inexact lore knowledge to answer.

You ever see Reboot? I think it's like that, you get a thing to help you handle some situation that baseline humanity would be hopelessly ill-equipped to handle, from some point of view. Except because it's built-in, you're stuck with it after. Even if it's totally unhelpful or actively makes dying seem like an improvement, oh well.

I think there was an old school that competed with Darwin's theory of evolution way back when. Mew from Pokemon was based on it. It posited an alternative where environmental stimulus provoked evolutions which were then passed down, rather than the inverse model we now know to be true. Marvel's mutants appear to be a throwback to this deprecated model of evolution.

>>
>>154842912
Technically, they are the byproduct of a VERY SUCCESSFUL experiment: X-gene kickstarted the powers of Franklin Richards(who later nullified it being a necessity for his powers) and Craig Hollis, Mr. Immortal, who evolved beyond it.

Yes.
But it also sets a precedent on what he can, and is willing to, do.
He is entirely willing to invisibly manipulate everybody's thoughts and actions if he feels it is necessary or just to do so.

It's capeshit comics, so you just have to accept that combinations of proteins can grasp infinite energy and change reality itself.
But it's mostly because Celestials are so powerful that there's little difference between magic and science for them.
Storm is so poweful because she comes from a line of African sorcerers, Wanda's power is harnessing chaos magic, and some mutants also harness darkforce. So yeah, mutant powers do overlap a lot with magic.
>>
>>154848732
There is a difference between epigenetic inheritance and zygote influence.
>certain physical and psychological experiences can change markers in DNA,
Thats zygote influence which is not the same as epigenetic inheritance, which is a epigenetic response appearing in a offspring despite not having the epigenetic trigger.

They seemingly retconned that during the Krakoa age. Hickman had it stated a couple of times that it was natural. Aaron had Mutants being older than humans. It has been quite some time since the Celestial implanting thing has been mentioned. It was even left out of the history of the marvel universe mini that came out around that time.

>>
>>154848679
...No? Not sure where you heard that. Offspring inherit more than just a genome. Your cells literally use heritable epigenetic changes to differentiate into different tissues despite having the same genome. E.g., your muscle cells turn off genes that cells use to build bone, and when those cells divide, both daughter cells will have those proteins turned off (unless something has gone very wrong).

>>154848817
Inheritance of stuff like methylation and histone marker patterns can happen between generations in complex life, and it is not exclusively zygote influence. It's been demonstrated pretty robustly in animals at this point, but it's always been very difficult to study in mammals because of viviparity - you have a whole gestation period for the mother's epigenetics to influence the epigenetics of the offspring. (Which is in itself a kind of epigenetic inheritance, just not what is referred to as "transgenerational epigenetic inheritance," which is probably what you're referring to specifically).

The basic gist of the current state-of-the-art in research AFAIK is that the events during development that clear MOST of the gamete's epigenetic information before the offspring develops do not actually clear ALL of it.

Might be your experience, but it isn't mine.
Women are repelled by gross, unhygienic, and non-socialized men.
Take a shower, groom your hair, talk to people regularly.
That's literally ALL you need to get an average woman. White or otherwise.

I once made a tinfoil helmet for shits and giggles. One, I had never considered how massive my head is before (size 8) and how much tinfoil I would need to make a decent, sturdy mindkontrol helmet.
Two, how much calmer my thoughts became after an hour of wearing that shit. Maybe (hopefully) it was just all placebo, but it was surreal how every time I wore it I could have a serene stream of consciousness vs the chaotic and funny way I process shit. Haven't worn one in uears, tho, I felt it was robbing me out of what makes me -me-, you know?

The whole x-men and x-fag audience are frankly mind blowing. They want to keep mutants as the constant victims who are just poor innocents being picked on but they also want to have moments where the mutants get to flex and own on anyone they dislike and they're just completely tone def to the notion that all of this is only proving the people they don't like right. Mutants don't have to make an effort because you're wrong for not letting them do whatever they want with impunity.

So I'm kinda going backwards through new mutants stuff. I read the Krakoa Saga which was a bit slow and tough to parse but was fun, now I just finished the New Mutants movie, why the fuck would you make a good little Presbyterian girl like Rahne into a dyke? Next I had a half mind of going a bit further back and maybe starting one of their 90's runs? Or I could stick to the format and do the one around 2010. I'm basically happy with anything focused on Rahne or on Illyana, and anything that avoids Warlock... His stupid chapter in the Krakoa series made me want to drop the comic.

>x house was so fucking tone deaf during krakoa
Arguably only when Hickman leaves. Hickman was about as subtle as a brick to the face that Krakoa was mutant Israel, and that it wasn't a good thing. He was setting them up to be antagonistic in an intergalactic race war that he never ultimately wrote (because he writes bizarre OOC stuff like that, it's just who he is).

A couple of the writers took the problems Hickman set out seriously, but there was almost no connection to those competent, critical stories in the main narrative. Instead, the era post-Hickman was steered by Ayodele-tier twitter stan writers only capable of oblivious, masturbatory one-upmanship.

It became chaotic and meandering because their only guiding plan was to stay in the zero-stakes, X-gene-worshipping ethnostate sandbox for longer. That's also why the era ends with an unintentional parody of "I must go, my planet needs me" for Krakoa. There was no plan to evolve the sandbox by examining its rotten foundations, and no plan for how to leave it when people stopped buying the books.

I worry that it doesn't matter, and Nature Girl has been ruined forever by association as a somehow less empathetic, less competent parody of Poison Ivy at her absolute worst.

Plenty of people still think 616 Wanda and Pietro are/were incestuous at some point - and that literally was 616 Nature Girl.

I liked Nature Girl dammit
>>
>>154853304
A lot of the other writers immediately picked up on the narrative problems with Krakoa but were explicitly told by Hickman they couldn't write stories about Krakoa being challenged. It's part of the Hickman dickriding that everyone else was simply too stupid to understand his genius rather than the reality Hickman having functional editorial control over the X-Men line for years and not wanting anyone to steal his thunder.
>>
>>154853798
That tracks with the kind of guy Hickman is, but doesn't track with the writing that DID challenge Krakoa (e.g. what happened with Third Eye).

Did that just slip through Hickman's meddling fingers?
>>
>>154853837
You had shit like Spurrier repeatedly tossing softball questions and whiffing them as well. No one was making pertinent, hard-hitting commentary on Krakoa until Hickman's power waned, just the pretense. And to this day as far as I know no one as ever asked any of the hard questions like, "Why was everyone OOC?"

way after and in the ultimate universe. however if charles and max would have let reed keep working on it, it would have really helped against orchis and their mutant detector. shit a gene masker could help living abominations live normal lives. but if youre a mutant, theres nothing wrong with you, unless you lose your powers, then your only options are fighting en saba nur to death or get the fuck out to be killed by the many enemies amassed waiting at the castle gates. the fact that the bus bombing wasnt seen as a major x blunder is fucking crazy, but letting literal predators run rampant in krakoa and around impressionable kids is pretty close

AFAIK yes. They're incredibly stupid, and the individual "soldier" level units are unable to adjust to unexpected variables without consulting superiors. Early X-Men is extremely "sci-fi schlock" (but in a charming way). Constantly using "thru" instead of "through" drives me up a wall, though.

the wildest thing about the pym situation is that there are a whole lot of heroes who shouldnt have shit to say that love to fucking grandstand about what he did. its also one of the reasons i dont like stark because people love to use him as a mouthpiece against pym when hes done far worse shit inebriated and sober than pym has and he constantly gets a pass.

MHA is probably the worst written setting of "a bunch of people have superpowers" I've ever seen. There is absolutely no interesting worldbuilding of any kind that makes the setting plausible. Like, why the fuck does the MHA world even have rank and file police officers when 95% of the people have powers?

Horikoshi is an awful writer and the fact that he grew up reading american comics shows.

>>154856242
I don't think he really thought out what a society of super people would really be like. Instead we get "regular Japan but once in a while a girl has actual cat ears."
>>
>>154855052
Ernst, the girl with progeria, was implied to be Cassandra Nova reborn. Martha Johansson was the brain in a jar. She's better now, Krakoa stuck her brain jar on top of a body.

We're expected to believe that Rogue went to school and had a normal school life when she was already with Mystique and Irene.
Bo, seriously.
>>
>>154856272
Yup. It's just regular Japan but also there's superheroes. Convenience stores still exist, and function exactly as they do in real life. Never mind that 1 in 15 people has actual mind control, or the ability to walk through walls, or invisibility, or any number of abilities that would COMPLETELY upend the functioning of a modern goods-based society.
>>
>>154856272
>>154856242
It has slightly more worldbuilding than that but you have to read a lot of material and the side series to get it. Basically, everyone's just playing along because they're well-aware that not doing so could easily destroy society. It's "an armed society is a polite society" when that society has recreational nukes.

Back in the days of Premier Comics, someone pitched an X-Team that was literally just the mutants with powers that make the existence of Sentials actually look like the horrible thing the X-Men always claim they are.

It was like, guy who only needed 5 minutes of sleep a day, a girl who could hear butterfly thoughts, a guy who can degauss stuff by licking it, and a girl who emitted a 4' contraceptive AoE around herself. People who would never go on field missions, but live in the mansion because they would still be lynched by killer robots for having an X-Gene.
