Jason's new origin hadn't been hashed out yet, and Jason was still solidly a GA homage as a brighter, chipper young Robin...while Batman was getting more edgy and gritty. Something that was increasingly happening since the late 70's consistently, but Barr and Davis in the Detective book emphasized the classic looks like Catwoman in the dress costume in contrast to their modernized approach. Really interesting alternative path of what post-Crisis could've been, worth checking out.

From what I gather the time between actual issues was prolonged, but when real-world passing of time fucks up your scripting, that's just bad.Also the dialogue is Miller at his most Miller, constantly making a statement and then calling back to keywords over and over. Jim Lee's art might be some of his best work and the (shameless) ass shot in the first issue deserves to be in the comic hall of fame, but it just doesn't make up for Miller's awful dialogue. It probably doesn't help that everyone is written as just genuinely awful people.
