The Korra hate has never made sense to me.
• Restored Airbenders to the world.
• Opened a new era of human-spirit coexistence.
• Saved the world from Harmonic Convergence and 10,000 years of darkness.
• Ended multiple global crises (Equalists, Unalaq/Vaatu, Red Lotus, and Earth Empire).
• Created a new Spirit Portal.
• Helped usher in democratic reforms across multiple nations.
• Redefined what it means to be the Avatar in the modern world through empathy, diplomacy, and change.

>• Restored Airbenders to the world.
That was automatic. not her doing.
>• Opened a new era of human-spirit coexistence.
Also automatic
>• Saved the world from Harmonic Convergence and 10,000 years of darkness.
This invalidates the previous point. Was spirits comingi nto the physical world good or bad?
>• Ended multiple global crises (Equalists, Unalaq/Vaatu, Red Lotus, and Earth Empire).
She was present while other people ended crises
>• Created a new Spirit Portal.
Youve milked 1 event 3 times.
>• Helped usher in democratic reforms across multiple nations.
This isnt a good hting
>• Redefined what it means to be the Avatar in the modern world through empathy, diplomacy, and change.
By failing at these tasks and forcing the regular people to pick up the slack.

We werent more permissive of aang. Korra just fucked up way way more. And these "mistakes" arent real. they were plot choices. They decided to make korra a fuck up, and we dont hate korra for that. we hate them for messing up korra.

>• Restored Airbenders to the world.
By accident.
>• Opened a new era of human-spirit coexistence.
Neither humans nor spirits wanted that. They were separated for a reason.
>• Saved the world from Harmonic Convergence and 10,000 years of darkness.
Which she enabled by listening to her evil Uncle.
>• Ended multiple global crises (Equalists, Unalaq/Vaatu, Red Lotus, and Earth Empire).
Amon is a fraud, she listened to her Uncle like an idiot and she created the last two threats with her spirit portals
>• Created a new Spirit Portal.
This destroys republic city and winds up destroying the solar system
>• Helped usher in democratic reforms across multiple nations.
Aang did that
>• Redefined what it means to be the Avatar in the modern world through empathy, diplomacy, and change.
She strong armed 90% of her problems.

Korra just plain sucks. They made a girlboss and couldn't even do that right, and thought making her a dyke would make her immune to the criticism.

It really is crazy how people saw that korra was locked in this small ass compound her entire life, needing permission from the white lotus just to take naga outside the grounds, & thought she was gonna come out of there being a well adjusted adult

Someone post the "So you're a misogynist" image

Gee, I wonder why people dislike her
>>
>>154844666
The White Lotus don't get enough heat for making Korra a bad Avatar. The whole point of mastering the elements is to become a well rounded person and get to know the world.
>>
>>154844660
>girlboss
Girlboss is when female character does thing male character does all the time.
Avatar has a lot of girl bosses I suppose. Azula. Toph. Katara even.
Azula? 14 years old, firebending prodigy. Effective military strategist that ook Ba Sing Se in what? A month? Iroh couldn't do it in over 600 days.
Toph? Blind. 14? Master Earthbender that regularly t-bags grown men in a fighting arena.
Katara? Literally calls out the sexism of the Northern Water Tribe and fights for her right to be able to bend how she wants. Master healer and world class waterbending fighter, matter of fact in the latest film she has in my opinion the greatest non avatar waterbending feat in the series.
Or are these 'girlbosses' okay because they came out when you were a kid and your mind wasn't broken my culture war shit
>>

I love Korra to bits and rewatching the series as an adult remains one of the most depressing things I've ever done to myself. 4 straight seasons of "does this powerful young woman deserve any kind of agency over her own life? The answers may surprise you"

Stupid things I've heard this week:
1. Korra ignored the evil background music
2. Unalaq is a stranger to Korra
3. Korra didn't master the elements
4. Aang is white
5. Ozai is the strongest being in Avatar

Avatar fandom truly is the K-pop fandoms rivalry in stupidity

Accidentally. Not counting that for or against her.
>• Opened a new era of human-spirit coexistence.
Again, neither good or bad as of right now. We'll see how it turned out in Seven Havens.
>• Saved the world from Harmonic Convergence and 10,000 years of darkness.
Only because of Jinora saving her ass. She was about to die.
>• Ended multiple global crises[...]
Equalists basically defeated themselves as soon as Amon was outed as a liar. The Dork Avatar was defeated because of Jinora, The White Lotus SHOULD have been the ones to end the Red Lotus but were cowards and just imprisoned them. She did actually beat Kuvira though.
>• Created a new Spirit Portal.
Accidentally
>• Helped usher in democratic reforms across multiple nations.
This is good, but only happened because everyone saw how much of a tyrant Kuvira was going to be.
>• Redefined what it means to be the Avatar in the modern world through empathy, diplomacy, and change.
She tried to punch all her problems. That was her major character flaw (flaws aren't bad things, but she needs to learn from her mistakes and grow as a person).

A gentle reminder that that Unalaq would never had known about Raava and Vaatu if a certain Avatar didn't piss of a giant owl that had a full Library with knowledge for thousands of years. And he even ended up handing over that person's granddaughter enabling the release of Vaatu

The show was thematically contrarian in a lot of small ways that appealed a lot to the showrunners and a vocal minority of terminally online content recyclers, but didn't do anything for the rest of its inherited audience.

Worse than a bad character, she was the protagonist of a bad sequel.

>>

>People deadass saw Korra lose her bending
And then they saw Ghost Aang show up and just give it back to her without her having to learn anything.
>her past lives
Which literally meant nothing because a) she could still call on their power to use the Avatar state regardless and b) she never bothered trying to talk to any of them at any point that she might benefit from their wisdom.
>and her physical mobility
Which might have meant something if we actually had Korra trying to live and adapt to being disabled, but she's only in a wheelchair for all of about thirty seconds in a single episode before going right back to having full mobility so it doesn't mean shit.
>>
>>154844666
Actually why was she even locked up to begin with? The Red Lotus is clearly a later retcon explanation because they were making shit up season by season with no overarching plan. Was it literally just to have an "outsider" protagonist and raising her in a box was the only way they could think to do it?
>>
>>154844879
Yes I can admit they both made mistakes, but what I won't shut up about is obvious misogyny and double standards. You can't criticize Korra for something Aang did and expect me to smile at you.

>bending comes easy
Aang actually had to train and learn the elements as a preteen. Yeah water came naturally to him, but earth and fire were compeltely different. He struggled like hell with earth bending and didn't have too much of an affinity with fire bending.

Water bending came easily because it's close to air bending mentally. Water and Air are about direction while Earth is about being direct.

It's pretty much only Waterbending he's shown to pick up that quickly and he still had to be shown how to do first by Katara. You could probably infer that Tonraq showed Korra how to Waterbend but Korra realistically should have no idea how to bend Fire or Earth

Aang was targeted by the fire nation when he was 12. The White Lotus decided to give her combat training since she was young so that if something similar happened again the Avatar might be ready for it instead of a 100 year long war kicking off.

The problem with Korra is that she's got all the worst tendencies of Aang's direction under Bryke when they made ATLA, namely writing the main character to be a static plot device who spins their wheels during the entire duration of the narrative.

Aang got away with it because the story genuinely gave him wins that he had to earn (for the most part), even if a lot of his training is rushed or if his emotional story beats are undercooked. And even if you weren't satisfied with Aang as a character, the rest of the cast did heavy lifting in terms of intrigue, internal conflict, and emotional engagement overall.

Korra got dealt a worst hand because Books 1 and 2 were written almost entirely by Bryke, who didn't have that much professional experience writing beforehand (most of ATLA's writing was not done by them), and it shows. On top of that, TLOK suffers from serious cast bloat and a shorter set of episodes per season (something that Bryke wanted for ATLA, fun fact). And even if you can look past all of that, Korra's still not a very dynamic or interesting character. She pretty much repeats the same actions for the entirety of the story:

>I'm gonna antagonize and instigate!
>No, Korra. Don't do that! The bad guy will beat your ass!
>I'm gonna do it anyway because no one can tell me what to do!
>(gets her ass beat and loses horribly)
>WAHHHH HELP ME WAHHHH
>(everyone shows up and actually does the heavy lifting/scores the victory)
>that's why you should have asked for help Korra, but it's actually OUR fault you acted selfishly to begin with
>I got it! I won't make that mistake next time (she does)
>>
>>154845057
I think that was more so no one knew where she was at while training. The White Lotus is full of very powerful benders too so having a few of them at a compound in the north pole training the avatar in secret isn't that big of a deal. It WAS to her determent though. It's clear that she only knows how to punch her problems away instead of knowing how to actually talk to people. Korra and Aang famously had opposite character flaws. Aang was a pacifist who didn't want to fight anyone. Korra was a hot head who only wanted to fight everyone. Aang didn't want to be the avatar. Korra couldn't wait to be the avatar.
>>
>>154845146
But that bring it back around to why though. The Fire Nation was cool. The Red Lotus didn't exist as a concept yet. Who were they protecting her from?
>>
>>154845164
>Who were they protecting her from?
It's been years since I watched S1. I'm pretty sure they didn't have a specific threat in mind, but were just paranoid. Again, I think it was to Korra's detriment.
>>
>>154845113
There's also the nitty gritty details which make things worse:

>Korra's character is built on the illogical premise of a Water Tribe Avatar struggling with Air and spirituality as a whole (despite the fact that Korra has mastered Water and was still raised by her parents who clearly weren't disconnected from their culture) which means her character is inherently frustrating
>as a narrative function, Korra doesn't really have a whole lot to do in general outside of fighting, Bryke genuinely don't let her do much outside of literal conflict
>everyone is constantly shitting on Korra from the very start of the series despite there being no reason, and even when there is a reason (all of her many fuckups), the narrative constantly shifts the blame from Korra, goes "she was right all along", or pretends like she's not at fault at all

>>154845164
The retcons in Book 3 are an attempt to make sense of the logical inconsistencies in Book 1 regarding Korra's background except they don't really fix the fundamental problems with Korra as a character in terms of function or design (a broken premise, limited scope, etc).
>>
Honestly I think they raised Korra in a compound because the (((White Lotus))) wanted their MKUltra super assassin, but that plotline got scrapped. Once she mastered air they would have given her the Joo Dee treatment.
>>
>>154844769
Fist of Fury was a big hit in Japan and it was anti-Japanese as fuck. Even Takashi Miike mentioned he joined a karate dojo after watching the movie because he wanted to be like Bruce. Maybe nips don't like TLA because they don't need a copy when they have the original at home
>>
>>154845113
>>154845191
The confusing part is that Book 3 has a single scene where Korra is written to be how she SHOULD have been for the entirety of the story (a levelheaded empathetic hero who has a lot in common with the little guy), but we never really get this Korra ever again!

>>154845216
Nah, the reason why the White Lotus compound thing exists in the first place is because originally Bryke intended Korra to be a native to Republic City (hence her lack of spirituality and why she acts like a normal person) but got attached to the visual of Korra being an outsider to the industrialized world, especially because it meant they could resurrect the premise of their original pitch for ATLA with the Avatar being an outsider to a technologically advanced society.

Except it falls apart because by nature of being an outsider, Korra WOULD be spiritual, so they had to contrive a reason as to why Korra already showed up out of touch except it just makes things awkward because now there's no internal conflict and instead Korra feels more at home within an alien place.

And in case you're wondering "why the fuck did they do any of this at all", it's because originally Korra was meant to be an Earth Kingdom Avatar spoiled and raised in the city (with the setting taking place further in the future) but Bryke walked that back in favor of connecting the story more explictly to ATLA.
>>
>>154844586
>"If I was surprised at anything, it may have been that it seemed like people were less willing to let Korra make mistakes than they were with Aang."
It's almost as if Aang was just a kid while Korra was a grown ass bitch or something

>>
>>154844586

ATLA is unpopular in Japan because it falls into the cultural uncanny valley. It may look superficially Japanese on the outside, but everything on the inside is undeniably Western (American/Christian). ATLA is like the counterpart to all those fantasy RPG-inspired anime and manga where they're superficially Medieval European fantasy but everyone acts Japanese and the themes are Shinto/Buddhist.
>>
>>154845310
Bryke don't really get how to write women and I think they forgot that they weren't the ones responsible for why people liked the female cast of ATLA.

>Bryke wanted Katara to be closer to Aang in terms of emotional maturity (pay attention to the Kataang episodes compared to how Katara normally acts)
>Bryke originally wanted Azula to be a boy and basically just Fire Nation Joffrey
>Bryke originally wanted Toph to be an older teen (or older guy) that Katara would crush on much to Aang's jealousy and envy

Remember, Bryke wanted to kill off Ozai in Book One and make it so that Iroh was secretly evil and purposefully training Zuko wrong.

I seriously don’t even know what to believe at this point.

> First, they said the original benders taught humans how to bend.

> Then they said some people were simply born with it.

> After that, they said the lion turtles gave humans the ability to bend.

> Now they’re saying Avatar Sonam had a staff that granted certain people bending.

At this point, what is the actual origin of bending?
>>
>>154845402
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Me wishing death on the writer's for S2 of Korra and then never having a plot of her getting the past lives back. That would've been cool.
>>
>>154844833
The issue with Korra being isolated and effectively homeschooled growing up is that nothing really comes of this within the narrative. I'm not talking about literal plot points in Book 3, but about Korra's choices and actions within the entire series.

Usually a character with a background of being sheltered/isolated during their developmental years goes down something like the Venture Bros or Blast From The Past route where they're exposed to the outside world, struggle with conforming to it (they may be taken advantage of, end up falling into a bad crowd, get exploited, etc), but ultimately end up finding a place within their new home.

Korra doesn't really do anything like this. She pretty much takes to the outside world like a fish to water so there's no real internal conflict that can intersect with the actual external conflict of the plot.
>>
>>154845428
The Avatar fandom is so dumb.
The series itself shows Wan being offered the bending by the lion turtle and then learning to master it with the dragon. Having the gift of bending is different from knowing how to bend; Aang/Korra/benders in general have the gift of bending but to be great at it they still need teachers
>>
>>154845462
I think that's mostly because S1 was originally going to be all there was for Korra. We do see her struggle to fit in within republic city in S1, but once the other three seasons got greenlit they did drop that plot line.
>>
>>154844757
>Unalaq is a stranger to Korra
Definitely no stranger but I don't believe he's the super-close beloved (I would trust you over my own dad) uncle to Korra Book 2 wants me to think he is. Guy is stated to visit the South Pole every handful of years which doesn't seem like enough time to forge such a bond with his niece, especially with the tension between him and Korra's dad. What's more Korra doesn't seem all that broken up about her supposed dear uncle being wiped from existence at her own hands.
>>
>>154845462
In order for TLOK to function as a narrative that you can actually salvage, you're left with two options:

>Korra has to be spiritual from the start (which would work as long as we don't make the Airbending struggle a thing) if she's to be an outsider to Republic City and the greater politicking of the world
>Korra isn't spiritual because she's a native to Republic City which makes solving the problems regarding spirits and the supernatural a challenge, but she's sheltered in terms of solving the problems of the world outside the city

Bryke wanted both options at the same time and the result is what we're stuck with. Korra's background basically has no weight or any sense of push when it comes to her actions. There is no true conflict, not even in S1, so Korra has nothing to do or a reason to do it. And this wouldn't be so bad if S2-4 didn't keep Korra on a constant loop.
>>
>>154845522
>What's more Korra doesn't seem all that broken up about her supposed dear uncle being wiped from existence at her own hands.
I like my uncles. If they tentacle rape murdered me a hundred and twenty some times. i don't think I'd like them anymore.
>>
>>154845492
I'd argue that it's also because Bryke wanted to give Korra a "positive change arc" (think Zuko or Sokka)... which would logically make sense with Korra's intended background. But because of the inconsistencies in said background's premise, Korra's stuck as an awkwardly written device that points in the direction of a positive change arc but her overall function in the narrative is that of a Flat Character Arc.

It's schizo/ADHD writing.

To be honest Korra being a failure it's perfect for storytelling to create an interesting world. You can create a fucked up dystopia and get a lot of fun out of it.

I invite Korra fans to reflect on the wide range of possibilities offered by a timeline buried in absolute chaos.

What were your theories about Amon before the reveal?
>>
>>154845986
That he learned how to seal bending from a lion turtle
>>
>>154844586
The big difference is that Aang is a more likeable person so people are going to be more willing to forgive his flaws.
Also, Aangs fuck ups are are things like kissing Katara when she wasn't ready. Korras fuck ups are things like destroying the connections to past avatars. Korra just plain fucked up worse than Aang did.

Korra didn't do shit. Aang was the one that pumped Katara full of pure blood airbenders.

>Amon was Yakone
>Amon was exactly who he said he was, a man graced by the spirits and sent to bring harmony
>Amon was one of Aang and Katara's children who was upset over being a nonbender and became vengeful

I kinda liked the one theory that Amon was an actor or some kind of legacy title, hence why his mask is modeled after East Asian theater masks.

That he was using chi blocking and it was a consequence of Ty Lee being in the circle of powerful benders after the fall of Ozai. They all looked at that technique and decided they needed to learn how it worked and it's limits. The info eventually got out and Amon's teacher perfected it/was a student of Ty Lee's. Amon used it to as a way to show non-benders could have power over benders and escape the pseudo-enforced second class status within RC.
>>
>>154846105
I swear I remember early press release and marketing stuff saying that Book 1's plot was dealing with stolen chi-blocking scrolls/techniques, but I don't know if that's false memories at play or if it was something that was on the table but ultimately scrapped and the media had some access to it.

Why did Korra's friend group suck so hard compared to Aang? Tenzin was cool because he had something unique to offee but did anyone feel like Korra's group was even a fraction as close or competent as Aang's?
>>

>>
>>154846156
Korra's friend group sucks because everyone in the Gaang serves a narrative function:

>Katara: acts as a mother figure to Aang, a love interest, Aang's Waterbending teacher, bounces off of Sokka and Toph for comedic affect, or clashes with Zuko for dramatic effect, and the group's beacon of hope
>Sokka: the comic relief, the strategist and rational thinker, as well as something of an everyman
>Zuko: an antagonist-turned-mentor and friend to Aang who goes on his own journey of self-discovery and maturity, and a straight man to the comedic antics of the group
>Toph: a mentor to Aang and equally a gag character as much as she is a literal powerhouse, another source of comedy and a needed complementary facet to the Gaang (someone who knows the fancy side of life, but is also very immature and bratty)

Nobody else has anything compelling to do in Korra's friend group or anything meaningful in relation to Korra.

>Korra already mastered the elements so Mako and Bolin can't teach her shit
>Korra's more materialist than she is spiritual so any dynamic with Asami means jack shit and is redundant
>because of Korra's schizophrenic writing, she can't have a natural or intriguing dynamic with any of her friends that naturally creates a plot
>Book 2 sets a funky precedent for the series in which Korra's friends spend WAY too much time apart from each other

You can stick any combination of members of the Gaang in a room together and sparks will fly. Put the Korra crew together and nothing rolls off of the tongue.
>>
>>154846193
Make it season 4.

S2 is red lotus. S3 is Kuvira. Both play out mostly like normal with small changes to make the continuity make sense.

S4: Korra's uncle or whatever discovers Raava/Vaatu after the spirit portal in RC is permently opened. That plot plays out mostly like normal minus the retarded shit he does. Then, at the end, instead of Raava getting whipped until all the past lives are gone, Korra is disconnected from the Avatar spirit when Raava is removed from her or whatever and goes into the tree of time and ends up doing the thing Jinora does to the dark avatar who is rampaging in what's left of RC after S3. Raava is reborn, past lives and the avatar spirit are reconnected to Korra, and she and Asami fuck off to the spirit world because RC fucking sucks and the avatar just being around is causing a ton of problems (the Batman/Gotham problem)
>>
>>154846193
>Choose between the civil war or the Vaatu crap as the A-plot rather than awkwardly jumping to the latter mid-way through the story
>Make Unalaq and Vaatu tragic monsters with nuance to them instead of being two-dimensionally evil
>>
>>154846228
Should have made Asami a rich air acolyte or some shit. Like one of those “spiritual” rich girls. Would have helped with the dynamic
>>
>>154846253
Korra's friends don't really meaningfully contrast her, there's no conflict! (It doesn't help that like I've laid out in the above posts, Korra's premise is schizo and broken). People like Tenzin and Korra because it's a classic stern grumpy old teacher vs immature dumbass student dynamic.

Asami COULD have been interesting (she was originally working for the Equalists and was a secret villain) but knowing Bryke's track record she would have ended up likely being forgettable and stupidly written.

But you could still make the character contrasts work if you tried:

>being the daughter to a industrialist tycoon, Asami is very spoiled, out of touch with spiritual matters, is a bit insensitive/rude (at the end of the day, she means well), and is used to getting her way by throwing money at the situation or by exploiting corruption in the system
>being street kids raised in a dangerous and poor part of the city means Bolin and Mako can be pretty shady, often play dirty, and can be pretty two-faced and duplicitous when they want to be

Its so oatethic and retarded how your kind has to make headcanons over how people "would actually behave" when in reality its your kind that acts like that.

Its why comics have characters crying and beging forgiveness for how they acted on the show, its why they fire VAs, its why they rewrite Sokka, Katara, Toph and Suki's personalities for the live action, it's why the new season is getting rid of "orientalism" by nuking the setting.

In the end turns out that YOUR KIND can't handle the OG show, and that couldn't be made today....and unlike you I don't need headcanons to prove that.

>Girlboss is when female character does thing male character does all the time.
Very raped reasoning you have.
>>
>>154844871
I disagree. Korra would have less defenders. You look at her defenders and see that they are either all waifufags that want to fuck her, or the most annoying kind of misandrist that will defend a woman no matter what.

Has her being a dude, she would be hated for the sort of shit she pulled with Bolin/Mako/Asami by the same people that praise her.
>>
>>154844871
This shit didn't have a great reception before the gay reveal so I don't think that is relevant.
>>
>>154844586
I got no stakes but I never hated Korra, she was pretty alright but it felt like after the first season they didn't really know where things were going so for a bit they just reuse a sorta conflict that did in season 1 and then you have low points like the love related stuff but her being so all over the place was kinda fun. Korra was fun.

Despite this, I've accepted that that new trailer will ensure she never leaves the slander trenches for years to come even if the show actually says she was right at some point or that she didn't actually fuck up the world. Being Korra is the call to be the scapegoat for any other problems with Avatar after Aang. At least she has the technically more fun video game

Make Season 2 into Season 1.
>Korra is isolated in South Pole
>Tenzin shows up to tell her he has to delay her airbending training again.
>Korra gets fed up, breaks out and goes to the Solstice Festival
>Runs into Asami and her father, who are meeting with Varrick to do business
>Hiroshi suggests Asami take Korra to a pro-bending match where the visiting Fire Ferrets are playing a local SWT team
>The festival is attacked by the dark spirit, and the group has to work together to try and keep civilians safe.
>Tenzin shows and Unalaq show up and Unalaq tames the spirit.
Basically every other major plot point stays the same. Korra trusts Unalaq over Tenzin because Unalaq is family and she hasn't gotten to know Tenzin yet. Unalaq stages a Civil War. Korra works with the others to stop Unalaq's plan. We find out Wan's backstory through some old scrolls Unalaq was keeping (Korra hasn't connected to her past lives yet), we get all the Vaatu/Raava stuff and Harmonic Convergence. Korra gets a glimpse of her past selves just long enough to see the connection broken.
Then you go to season two. Korra tries and fails to learn airbending with Tenzin and they get sidetracked with the revival of the air nomads and the threat of Zaheer and the Red Lotus (Korra gets her first taste of the Avatar state when she's poisoned)
Season three. Trauma time skip. Korra still hasn't recovered, and has given up trying to master airbending and the Avatar state until Kuvira's war forces her into action.
Season four. Now bring back the Amon plot. The rise of the Equalists is the result of back-to-back world-ending threats and upheavals. Hiroshi's betrayal and Tarrlok being a baddie are impactful twists because they've been supporting characters for 2-3 seasons. Asami choosing Korra over her father actually makes sense. Amon taking Korra's bending and her finally learning airbending and then finally connecting with Aang are now huge climactic moments that feel earned.
>>

I’ve always found it difficult to defend Korra against someone who hates her because they seem far more informed than I am. It feels like they’ve watched it a dozen times. I also like the show but not that much.
>>
>>154844586
the problem was that aang was literally a child, from the past, who knew ALL his friends ad family (except boomie, appa and lemur) were dead, and it was up to him to suddenly reverse 100 years of war.

korra had a good family, was raised as the avatar as a kid, and was in her late teens in a period of peace and tranquillity, literally a golden age left by aang.

a load of her achievements were incidental, or had most of the heavy lifting already done by prior avatar aang.

the hate is overdone, but she was poorly written because they kept getting 1 season deals, and its hard to write well in those circumstances.
>>

I had fun with the Lord of War posting Asami got back in the day. But it was completely bizarre how much excitement there was for her character among the audience relative to how she seems to have been a complete afterthought in the writers' room. I get that showrunners can't always anticipate what parts of a show the fans latch onto, but with Asami in particular they were completely out of synch.

My issue with Korra was mostly that no attempt to address her flaws stuck until the final season. It's like they kept rebooting her to factory setting. Hell, they did it literally in season 2.
It was kinda annoying to watch her run into the same wall over and over again while the show was like: "Can't you feel for her? She's doing her best here?"
I guess it's more an issue with the writing than with the character.

Because they were never supposed to be a team to begin with. They were only written with S1's plotline in mind. /co/ is just bitter she is a lesbian and can't stick their dick in her. Korra has rewritten what it means to be an avatar hell she absorbed both entities of good and evil and reshaped the world. Now humans and spirits will live in harmony

>You can't criticize Korra for something Aang did and expect me to smile at you.
Aang learned from his mistakes and changed his approach to conflicts (and his role as a Avatar) over the course of his narrative.
Korra didn't. Her main antagonist has a more developed motivation for his actions.
>>
>>154847527
>this goes for Aang too
You faggots should really stop saying that. His people were genocided because he ran away, he tried to skip to friebending and hurt Katara and his own confidence in the process, he blamed Toph for Appa getting stolen and he lost control of the Avatar state multiple times, making him fear it.
Aang made several mistakes with long-term consequences that were unfixable or he had to fix himself. The only issue was the dragon turtle cop-out at the very end of the show. And that may have been fixed if Bryke thought of Wan at the time and Aang learned from him that the bending potential was gifted to people by Dragon Turtles and sought one instead of it appearing randomly. It would still be a cop-out, but not as bad of a one.

The point in Korra is that the new Airbenders don't really adopt and have difficulty assimilating Airbender culture. It's why in S4 they're basically an auxiliary world police.
>>
>>154845986
This never made sense because how the fuck would Korra even exist.
Though I remember seeing a theory that she wasn't the Avatar, which is why she sucked at it and couldn't Airbend, but was just an "exceptional bender" who had access to three elements for some reason.
>>
>>154847661
The 1st season love triangle really turned me off on Korra, no matter how hot she is.
>>
>>154845276
>it's because originally Korra was meant to be an Earth Kingdom Avatar spoiled and raised in the city (with the setting taking place further in the future)
This would have made a lot more sense. The world felt like it advanced way too quickly. Korra having another Avatar between her and Aang would have been better for the setting. Then that water bending Avatar could have been credited for the modernization of the world instead of Aang.
>>
>>154847714

I liked Korra and Bolin's chemistry in S1 until she kisses Mako in front of him. Korra and Bolin would have been a better couple. Mako always felt like the worst one in the group for me, although Bolin also became shitty after S1.
>>
>>154847776
Korra + bolin and mako + asami was the only way to maintain a healthy group dynamic. Asami + Bolin could work but works just as well as a friendship but korra + mako is just a toxic version of opposites attracting that only works as a fling. Korra + Asami just has nothing to work with.

aside from the mistakes not being exactly the same, personality goes a long way. people are and should be willing to accept mistakes and growing pains from a pacifist and peace maker character exploring the world and being imperfect. but with korra she was headstrong and a hard ass about it as well as the mistakes being more severe

this would be less of a problem if korra was a more kind person and not as abrasive, and if they themselves contained how to make interesting and serious mistakes while not "destroys all avatars forever" tier shit

Not that I think Bolin's a prize catch or like her one that got away or anything but it's funny how much she's goofing off and having fun with him here, contrasted to beginning of S2 where the shine's worn off of Mako and they can't help but bitch at each other in the middle of that festival.
>>
>>154848004
Arguably bolin is the one that dodged a bullet there, but the main reason why he would have a better chance with korra than mako is because he would be a lot more forgiving whenever korra had one of her outbursts, while korra herself would have a much easier time dragging him around whenever she needed him.

You fix a lot of the entire show by making the Red Lotus the overarching antagonist throughout the seasons. The biggest issue they had was needing to come up with a new threat every season, and S2 had too much with the civil war nonsense and vaatu. Like this anon pointed out.
>>154846246
I also don't understand why the writers felt they needed to destroy Korra's past connection. Feels like misery porn and didn't really evolve her character at all. I'm mixed on the Vaatu and Raava stuff as well, I don't hate it, but there was 0 development for it in the previous season/show and definitely felt shoehorned in. Also less Jinora. I'm fine with Tenzin's kids growing to play a bigger role, but I feel like you needed to divide up their contributions instead of dumping it all on Jinora. Mako had a very genuine brotherly dynamic with bolin, and was interesting to watch when he was investigating a conspiracy. I want to chime in but an appeal to Aang was that every time he bended a non-air element, I saw a reflection of his teachers. The personalities of his teachers bleed into his bending.
Korra doesn't have that.

Sonam was a retard - she created a staff that corrupts you with dark power, had time to seal it away, but left no proper instructions for that or that Tagah was evil, and become uncontactable because "muh shame"

how did they "sugarcoat" any of Korra's fuck-ups? She kept the spirit portals open and it made the people of republic city genuinely hate her.

she could have been a "three quarters Avatar", something in the rebirth process got fucked up, which is why she couldn't airbend as Aang was 'holding on' to it or something.

Because people realized that was a shit way of storytelling after the Superman golden age. Having a god character just effortlessly wank through everything is boring and stupid.
>>

>>
>>154848074
>korra herself would have a much easier time dragging him around whenever she needed him.
This is exactly why they weren't a couple. Korra doesn't want a partner like that. It's why she was never interested in him in the first place. He's just a good friend.

>>154847916
>this would be less of a problem if korra was a more kind person and not as abrasive
So if she were more like Aang? But that's boring. The whole point of Korra was that she was different from Aang. They were practically polar opposites in terms of attitude and personality, and each was saddled with a responsibility that would have been more suited to the other because the world wanted to force the Avatar into being the weapon they wanted, instead of letting them grow, organically.

I think a lot of people also gloss over how big a part Korra's upbringing plays in things. She found out she was Avatar when she was even younger than Aang, and she was basically conscripted into military training becaue everyone was living in fear that another Ozai/100-year-war could start any second, so they wanted a fully-trained Avatar ASAP. Unfortunately, this only helped feed the aggressive parts of Korra's personality, while she was effectively locked in a military compound, devoid of any spiritual training or proper socialization; both things Aang was practically drowning in.

As Avatars, Aang was a leaf when the world needed a rock, and reactively, Korra was trained to be a rock when she needed to be a leaf. All of this is actually competently established and discussed in the show. Most people were just too busy being angry that Korra wasn't perfect because female characters aren't allowed to be flawed or abrasive to the same degree as males.

The only real course correction they ever did was changing her retarded hairstyle. But everything else was fumble after fumble.

Although it was kinda funny in a meta sense that nice guy funny man Bolin was never even considered as a serious romantic interest by Korra despite putting in effort and having great chemistry with her.

Having finished off the movie a few hours ago, I thought it could have been a 8/9 out of 10. Animation was of course fantastic, no comments on that, but there was one scene which really left a bad taste, and reminded me so much of Korra.

The Gaang should have been WAY more mad at Aang after they all almost died. There was no grit in them, no instinct of self preservation or interest. I get Zuko was on board because the Fire Nation caused the genocide, but above all, Katara should have given Aang a lot of shit about what happened, both for loving him and for his role as the Avatar in the world.

But there was none of it. The story had clearly been setting some internal conflict between Aang and his mission as the Avatar, and also unresolved issues between him and Katara. She very obviously understands he is the Avatar. She is happy about it, and happy at what he has accomplished. But she makes the comment in the beginning of the movie wishing they were spending more time together. And the Katara in the original show would have stood her ground on this. Naturally she would do it in a more mature way, likely calmer too, but this conversation just didn't happen.

TLDR: Aang got the Korra treatment this movie, and he's lucky we like the original show and the movie is gourgeous

That same non-serious romantic interest got the affection of a Water Tribe princess and a Zaofu heiress. Even if you wanted to be pessimistic and argue those aren't great or wouldn't work out, I think it's shown that Bolin's capable enough to find someone right for him eventually.
Mako meanwhile flitted between the Avatar and a sugar mommy CEO and couldn't hold onto either of them.

Being so isolated in a structured society would make her unwilling to deal with people and more subservient to authority, not make her more likely to attack people and be disobedient. So how she was raised should have given her the opposite personality.

>>154845191
An Earth Avatar struggling with this would make sense.

For Korra they needed to link this problem to how she was raised, such Korra undergoing such rigid training that it makes it harder for her to connect with an element about freedom. However that would mean Korra couldn't be rebellious.

>Well he really should have gone for the kill when he realized korra knew he was a psychic bloodbender but that's just plot convenience for you.

Also, after she threw him out the window, he didn't need to waterbend back up in front of everyone, could have just swum up and continue pretending to be a non-bender so his people would stay loyal.

Amon's IQ points really dropped in that one episode in specific.
>>
>>154850274
The new baby would have been born in the Water Tribe, and the Fire Nation would have needed another few decades or so to wipe out the Northern Water Tribe's benders, evident by the raids starting when Hama was a young woman and ending when Katara was a child. Conquering the Earth Kingdom would have shaved maybe a decade or so off, but it still would have taken enough time for the Avatar to have been reborn and trained in Waterbending.
>>
>>154850343
Amon could have just killed Korra in secret. Hell, if he were smart about it, he could have spun that as a point for the equalists. Korra hadn't really done anything to warrant public sympathy enough for people to want to martyr her, and "we can take down even the Avatar" would have been an undisputable display of power for the Equalists.

You see, the reason this phenomenon exists is because idea guys/writers have a bad habit of overvaluing their own ideas, since ideas feel so much more exciting when you come up with them yourself. If you have someone to bounce your ideas off of though, you get a much more objective perspective from the other person, and thus you can discard or refine your ideas into something better which you wouldn't have even thought to do otherwise.
This is why every good book needs good proof readers, since otherwise bad ideas will go unchecked.

What I really hate about Korra, specifically the story, is how every villain starts out interesting and somewhat justified, but then is suddenly turned into a mustache-twirling supervillain.
With Amon starts out as a non-bender equal rights activist and becomes a supercommunist kill all bending style faggot.
Then with Unalaq it starts with an interesting Water tribe civil war plot and devolves into him becoming the Satan Avatar who wants 10,000 years of darkness for no particular reason.
With Zaheer he was better than the others at least, but his justification for wanting to end the Avatar Cycle despite the fact that the Avatar usually keeps tyrants in check was very absurd.
And then with Kuvira she starts as a someone who just wanted to restabilize her crumbling home nation, and then it turns out she's literally Earth Hitler with concentration camps and everything.
At least with Fire Hitler it was more believable since he was born into a family of sociopaths that encouraged that mindset, but with Kuvira it feels too forced.

Let me stop you right there buddy because ive been here since the beginning. People were excited for korra the first few episodes and went wild speculating on what grand adventures she would have and who is amon, etc. It was a gradual souring that culminated in the asspull ending that made people start to hate korra. Fans were already dropping off by season 2 but many people still had hope that Bryke could turn things around, and boy were they ever wrong. S2 was like the point of no return for most of the fanbase. Where the majority either stopped watching or watched to hate on it. But after S2 the series never really recovered and getting banished to the sadow realm by Nickelodeon wasnt exactly unwarranted considering how badly they tanked their own viewership.

This is not an issue of people were racist against Korra from the beginning. No. People gave the legend of Korra chance after chance to try to like it, mostly riding on nostalgia from the previous series. But there is only so much disappointment people can take before they give up on something and thats what ultimately was the shows problem. It was consistently disappointing.

Am i too late to make my point?
The nucleus of the shows' failure is thus: they forgot to make Korra Genki.
Plenty of other things came out wrong so it's a complex issue but it all begins with this one fact, it all grows from this potent yet simple dissatisfaction in the viewer. Annoying bitch girl characters are totally fine and everyone loves them as long as they have a cute side to balance it out. The writers just forgot and wrote her incorrectly. Korra acts anxious, angry, respectful, determined, sad, afraid, serious, depressed, at peace. She's rarely depicted as happy, lighthearted, endearing or whimsical, when she cracks a joke it's just a momentary gag. Then right back serious avatar business big responsibility.
I see a great disconnect between canon Korra and fan Korra.

People give Aang a pass because he was an orphan little kid that got unfrozen 100 years later and had to train with kids as his teachers. Korra was privileged, was raised like a Queen and trained with the best teachers.

I ended up getting the joke but i didn't laugh. I came here to argue.
In short it's really about Korra not acting cute enough and i'm not projecting. It's my external observation of (You). Her character is what matters to most to you and if she'd been the muscly tomboy everyone imagine her to be, you would have forgiven the boring dialogue i guarantee you that, even the lore shittery would have been passed off as a "questionable new direction for the setting".
>>
>>154849179
I like her with her hair down.
>>
>>154853967
And once they lost most of their viewers it didnt really matter. Yeah by season 3 they started trying to make adjustments because even they saw that things werent going well but it was sadly a case of too little too late. The fundamental problems were still there. They were still wasting time on relationshit drama, still making the season villain self contained, still dropping the ball with interesting ideas that get poorly executed, and so on.

Whats really going to be the sign whether they learned anything or not will be how the next show plays out. Even with how poorly theyve handled things lately I will still give them the benefit of the doubt and check out Avatar Seven Havens but already I have doubts.
>>

Aang was in a higher risk, lower resource situation. Aang was a kid and most of his consistent and direct allies were also children, there were some problems they just could not solve on their own and a lot of mistakes they make because they were a couple kids fighting an empire. They objectively did very well for the bad situation they were in.

Korra was a celebrity in a time of relative peace and with the resources of an advanced city, surrounded by people with wealth and inventions. For all of the advantages that she had access to, her track record is actually very poor.
>>
If Korra's been secluded in a compound training all the time. Shouldn't she be surprised by everything while being super strong? How come she gets her bearings so fast in the outside world and gets defeated all the time?
She should've been like: wtf's a zoo? I want to go there. Where's the earth kingdom, so that's a desert? Can we go to the pool? Is that a political protest, i heard about those.
Instead she never wanders she always sticks to the mission.

Nah I turned on her in Season 1 when she bullshitted into an Air Bender and then the Season ends with Aang bulshitting her powers back instead of Korra going on a journey without bending.

Honestly Season 2 would have been great if the reason she was opening the Spirit Portals was to restore her Avatar Powers and she had to spend time without her powers to learn some fucking humility.

She never even tried to figure out why Amon's followers hated benders and was just like "LOL BENDING IS GREAT SUCKS TO BE YOU I'M JUST BETTER THEN YOU!"

I think every big, "older" cartoon will always have a fanbase that's just perpetually stuck in "old good new bad". Spectacular Spiderman, Mystery Incorporated, etc.

That said, Korra is bad, it has its momemts, but the characters are mostly bland till the last 2 seasons, the plot and lore are poorly written and some of it even ruins established pieces of the old series, and comics and the new movie aren't really far behind. and Seven Havens looks to be even worse. No redeeming qualities at all from the alleged synopsis and the glance of it we saw. If it really does take place hundreds of years after Korra and every TLOK character is dead then I can't even really call it avatar.
>>
>>154856591
You don't even have to introduce "evil Airbenders". The Airbenders basically separate people in love from their child and each other systematically. In any human culture that'd be seen as one of the most cruel things you can do.

Because Bryke openly stated that they had no interest in showing the Avatar journey in Korra.
>>
>>154855054
>They had to rewrite the finale at the last minute iirc, since they were told at the last minute they probably won't get a second season.
No? They were told about getting more seasons halfway through production of Season 1.
Season 1 was specifically designed as a mini-series that could potentially stand on its own.
Amon was always meant as a one season villain.

We could have got a brutal chad earth bending avatar, but you're gonna get the poo avatar instead and you're gonna like it.

How do Airbenders even populate? They separate the males and females, do they have some orgie event to reproduce once a year or something?
>>
>>154850168
Azula killed Aang. They made a big fuss about it on book 3 and avatar's official website with the flash game that shows Aang actually died and having to reconnect with his past life in the spirit world to revive himself.
>>
Korra as a character seems like bryke pulling a cargo cult on how to make a brown tomboy character. he nailed her design, but he simply doesn't know how to write her as endearing tomboy characters. He wanted to create a lovable meathead tomboy, but what he ended up creating is a annoying, rude and emotional bitch.
Pic related is what Korra would've been if bryke know how to write a good female character, not a realistic one.

No, her personality is more aggressive and thickheaded, kinda like Korra, but unlike Korra, she was never egoistic or dramatic which make her lovable despite her obvious lack of prefrontal cortex.

What did Aang do that was a fuck up? For most of the original show, he solves other people's problems. Korra spends most of her show goofing off or causing problems, and has to be forced into doing something good.

To be fair Guru Patnik existed in the original. But to answer your question a lot of studios now are filled with indians. In animation studios it's usually second gen indians who are desperate for representation. It's why in the movie the missing ancient airbender avatar was an indian woman and now in the new series the earth kingdom which was supposed to represent china is now filled with jeets.

>Season 2 would have been great if the reason she was opening the Spirit Portals was to restore her Avatar Powers and she had to spend time without her powers to learn some fucking humility.
This is the best fix I've seen presented. Season 2 really should have been Korra struggling as a non-bender and set on a path to find her bending again and getting in touch with the spiritual side that she ignores.

Too bad.
>>
>>154863481
>Guru Patnik existed in the original
That was during a time when most of us were oblivious to how bad jeets are. They were still seen as some mystic silly brown guys that are into spirituality. Their image has been exposed and ruined thanks to the internet and their forced immigration.

Sonam was hot tho and Air Nomads were always loosely connected to jeets due to the Tibetan/Buddhist allegory. Pavi and that other chick just look like brown turds who don't belong in the setting and certainly don't belong in the Earth Kingdom.

>Or are these 'girlbosses' okay because they came out when you were a kid and your mind wasn't broken my culture war

So Aang died, like cardiac arrest, then they resuscitated him, but Korra was already born, so he lost his connection to the avatars and as such all elements except air which was native to him?
And Korra could get air but skill issue, and the villain is an air bender. I more or less like it, except for the whole villainizing the "beloved" main character from the show. That's always a really low blow.

Indian definitely has a lot of work to do with modernization but it’s kind of silly to write off a billion+ people that will become more and more relevant in this multipolar world. The issue is there is that the scammer with a heart of gold is a staple in indian culture.
Yeah it makes for a nice story to tell, but westerners have a massive hateboner for any and all scams, it's not like china where they'll blame themselves for falling for it, no, westerners will group up and attack people who pull this shit

There's a good reason why the scammer with a heart of gold doesn't really exist in the west (unless their scamming to save a loved one or bread for a family)

>>154864869
Korra was plenty flawed, I think the issue is people want a simple buzzword to shit on a character when it's a harder issue to explain and pretty subjective. Korra's biggest issue isn't she's a Mary Sue or a flawless girlboss. Her flaws aren't really satisfying to watch, they don't have an apparent payoff of developing beyond them or really learning from her consequences. At the end of the day Korra's issue was she was just kind of a shitty uncompelling person to start with, surrounding herself with other shitty uncompelling supporting characters.

Korra was the face (or avatar, he he) of a show that failed to live up to its predecessor. People are going to find all sorts of reasons to complain about her. Doesn't help that she's just ultimately not that likeable or interesting outside of being attractive.

I find LoK to be a very "Star Wars Prequels" series, where it has lots of interesting ideas, but just fails to execute them in a compelling way, and all the characters just kind of feel flat without any real chemistry.
>>
>>154865170
I feel like Americanized Indians are far away from their scammer cousins. Then again it actually takes hard work and money to move to a different country. At the very least Bryke starting with a kid protagonist gives them room to develop a character that will mature and grow and they can be take lessons learned from the avatar movie to develop the gang more next time.

Zaheer is debatable because it feels like they worked back from the idea of evil airbender/villain gaang team and crowbar'd in some psued philosophy.
Amon and his brother definitely had potential to represent a divide that Korra would have had to actually mediate and overcome her insecurities but ultimately we just forget the equalist movement entirely and invent some inconsequential face/off backstory that has absolutely no bearing on Korra.
Kuvira's a good foil but she comes in too late. She would have been better served as a team member and having an inverse Zuko arc to show Korra rubbing off on people negatively. Also she's the poster girl of "our villain is making too much sense, quick, show them erecting a concentration camp!"

The whole franchise might have been in a limbo a few years back, but that bit about korra being gone and forgotten may be premature, with her appearence in the fighting game, her being referenced in seven heavens and her show being re aired on teennick.

Difficult to be excited for an apocaliptical/mad max take on avatar. Especially because people's frustration stem from core concepts bryke introduced in Korra and they seemed to have doubled down in the new avatar movie:
- Abandoning thr Yin Yang approach, with the Avatar striving for balance instead of being the representation of just order
- Kaiju light beam fights, dropping the grounded martial arts approach
- More debatable, but in the original show it's not clear people need to have the inherent "ability" to learn how to bend an element. The idea was that anyone could learn if they trained hard enough, and humans had learned with animals

It feels like they decided to push bending to be more akin to superpowers rather than disciplines of knowledge people could master. I get they wanted to build an in universe reason why normal people couldn't bend more than one element, but I feel like their choice of making bending something you had to be born with was poor in hindsight to the setting. I don't see why they couldn't have pushed the idea that anyone could bend even if only a little bit, but 99% of people just sucked major balls and couldn't do more than pushing the equivalent of some gains of sand. Perfectly fine to still call these people non benders.

Most people learn math in high school, but that doesn't make any of them mathmaticians.
