This makes total sense to me, actually. The first two movies were about characters that the general public didn't really care about anymore, and the movies were attempts to make them relevant again (whether it was successful or not is arguable). Spider-Man is already very relevant to the casual audience, so the movies doesn't start on an uphill climb.
