>indie animation writing is bad because the creators don't read enough
I'm going to be honest here, I haven't read a fucking book to completion since high school. No book actually interests me, not even in audio form. Even graphic novels are a slog. Most reading I do is articles on historical shit or whatever I'm into.
Any attempt to read a book just ends with me getting bored. Thinking about just paying some egghead a few hundred to just write my short films for me I don't give a fuck
Classic movies bore the shit out of me too. Tried watching Fury Road and was bored to hell
>>

Nobody fucking reads books for fun anymore, it's 2026.

I've always hated the act of reading a book.

Reading is only part of the reason
Bookworms have poor theory of mind for non readers so their input is useless
Could try reading and writing screenplays if your goal is short films
But don’t sweat it

I dont want to read classic literature for the sole reason that it's what everyone is telling me to do. I am a fucking contrarian, why would I do what others are telling me. If they told me not to read them then I would
>>
I think indie animation writing is bad is because they live in a bubble with their friends that makes it so they have a type of writing or dialogue that only that friend group would accept as normal. you gotta branch out more often if you write but usually people ignore this since “write what you know” is all they listen to

Fury Road is boring. Mad Max and The Road Warrior are much better.
Fun fact: The Road Warrior stars Australian actress Milly Allcock (now known as Supergirl) in her earliest role.

writing in general is going to shit because
1. people don't read enough, they don't read things outside of their YA comfort zone, and they don't even watch good movies or TV. They max out at Firefly and Pulp Fiction.
2. they don't fucking do anything. No one has life experiences anymore. People have trauma from Twitter threads

If you want to be a writer, find a way to be interesting, idk. Go and do an incredibly dangerous job for three years.
>>
>>154853351

I wasn't much of a reader but when I got to AIT I could, finally, do so. Chronicles of Prydain, Mort, Shrapnel, all have been consumed and more are on the way, in-between drawing by hand for once. It's been great.
Try it anon.
>>

>>
>>154854213
life experiences inform the escapism. Like how Robert E Howard was so good at writing fight scenes, because he also was into physical fitness, and journaled boxing matches.
>>
>>154853335
>>154853483
I'd assume most indie animation writers are bad because their influences mainly come from animation. And animation in general really isn't a high mark for story-wise. Depending on their sources they've consumed or enjoy.
>>154853479
Read the more fun stuff then. Also they have audiobooks now.
>>
>>154853335
It's less about reading more books and more about broadening your horizons. The people making entertainment these days had boring childhoods and currently have extremely narrow interests. They have very few sources to draw from.
As an example, what can you expect from a creator who only ever watches anime with no other hobbies or interests? They're going to end up making something that is their regurgitated interests, so it's going to be a poor imitation of a few anime series they liked. The result is usually not very good.
>>
>>154854213
in fantasy writing from experience = transposing emotional memory onto a more epic scenario
>>
>>154853335
Real reason young people don't read for fun these days (Other than shortening attention spans) is because the books you were forced to read in school just sucked. Felt like teachers always intentionally picked the most poorly paced and boring shlock because some suit at a school board thought it was a good idea.

It's no shock why people end up reading less and a lot of times, not at all after high school.
>>
>>154855097
>is because the books you were forced to read in school just sucked.
I'm glad I live in Massachusetts, we got to read fun fucked up shit in high school like In Cold Blood, Lolita, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
>>
>>154855097
As a kid I fucking loved reading. Then the school reading projects started to roll in and gradually killed my interest in it. They'd be way more fun if I was allowed to pick the books I wanted to make projects based on, but no I had to be handed the absolute worst drivel possible. It all came crashing down when we were forced to read Harry fucking Potter.
Our school system fucking sucks.
>>
>>154853899
>they don't fucking do anything. No one has life experiences anymore. People have trauma from Twitter threads
>If you want to be a writer, find a way to be interesting, idk. Go and do an incredibly dangerous job for three years.
this
reminds me of this youtuber who went to an art college and saw everyone's final projects and how samey most of them were because they were all fresh out of high school and went straight to uni
i think that the real problem is that people can't really lead interesting lives anymore at least in places like ammerica, because life has become too mundane
>>
This thread is a great reminder as to why I don't take the opinions of people who watch cartoons seriously these days.
I could not imagine being so brainrotted that you can't even sit down to read a COMIC, let alone a book.
But yes, part of the issue is that a lot of the people making cartoons today have no life experience and can't even make up for that lack of experience by being well-read, or at least being observant enough to draw from current goings-on in the world at large.
It's fine if you want a comfort show, but when EVERYONE is making either a comfort show or "slice of life retail worker but with my fursona" or "references and therapy sessions," that shit gets old.
>>
>>154853335
You're an idiot. Read.
>>
>>154853335
You should probably read, at least something that actually interests you but what annoys me is people believing that indie work was ever going to actually be good
You are not going to get great work on an indie scale, ever.
Cartoons are made through an intense, usually well budgeted, collaborate environment.
The death of cable has been an absolute fucking disaster for animation. People want 90s quality shit on a YouTube budget. Honestly it would barely make a difference if these people read or had "exciting" lives, the execution would still be amateur and people would still complain

They did that at my HS and people still didn't read. I was lucky because I worked at Books a Million and I saw a shit ton of stuff that was interesting. Versus the highly curated and neutered school library.
I personally think it's a lot of factors, TV took over, then the internet and then smartphones brainfucked multiple generations with easily consumable media.
>It all came crashing down when we were forced to read Harry fucking Potter.
I hated it, and I could never get past the first 1/5th of the book. That and I felt no need to read it because of the movie hype. Meanwhile I was reading Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials (Golden Compass Series) and The Hobbit at the time.

Eh, if you haven't started now, doing so would just be haphazard and not REAL inspiration for any creative work.
The majority of the time when a creator is inspired by a novel, it's something they genuinely liked during their childhood. You'd just be playing catch up like a manlet trying to get buff at 30 thinking that it will transform his life

It depends moreso on what you like genre wise, as retarded as that sounds.
Google some themes you may like to read or explore, and if the book isn't really doing it for you, just set it down and read a different one. I've done that a few times.
The more I've read, the more I realized I like multiple things.
Personally, Dune is kinda interesting.
Or try some of Robert E Howards Conan short stories (a lot of Conan the Barbarian's stories actually are mainly short stories written for pulp-fiction magazines before Sword and Sorcery genre took off).
Lovecraft is kinda interesting too. Since it's just so bizzaro. But that's more kinda fun, interesting reading.
Redwall might be a good opener for you though, but again, it's gonna be taste-testing literary wise.

writing isn't that important when it comes to animation

the problem is when they think their animated work needs good writing and not serviceable writing in order to compliment the animation and get an idea across

Oh my god. I thought people were just refusing to grow up and chose to read Harry Potter. I didn't know schools are forcing that on people. I was reading C.J. Cherryh's Chanur Saga novels in 6th grade back in the early 90's, and these days we got fuckin 20+ year olds gushing about Harry Potter. Shit's sad. Is this why movies for teens like the mcu has such appeal these days, and actors who normally would avoid that crap back in the day because they were trying to win serious awards like an Oscar and a star on the Walk Of Fame are fighting tooth and claw to hang onto their roles in brain dead action movies based on juvenile comics? Some people are trying to stay juvenile, and the rest of society is being forced into it?

I feel like you don't exactly need to be that well-read. If you're doing comedy, it's about honing your comedic skills, and if you're doing something else, you need to study the subject. It’s really hard to be both a writer and an artist. Look at how most artists’ ideas revolve around drawing and designing, which isn’t really focused on writing, whereas for a writer, it’s all about plot, details, and characters. That’s something an artist doesn’t usually do. The problem with TRULY indie cartoons is that you’re on your own in this endeavor, without a publisher or a team of writers to help you.
>>
>>154859236
Got a question. Do you feel it's better for someone to be a writer and solicit for an artist, or be an artist and solicit for a writer if they're trying to do a comic book? I see people posting asking for artists and I'm thinking "okay this guy has a vision but he has no real talent", whereas I see an artist posting looking for a writer and I'm thinking "cool, we got somebody who's invested in the project already and willing to do over half the work. Anybody with a good vocabulary and native command of the English language can write."
>>
>>154859262
People seem to get more pissy at artists looking for writers from what I've seen from others. Which imo is backwards since the art/animation will be the heavy lifting

I feel that's because with an artist it's easier to see where their skill level lies in the visual presentation but a writer? There's ALOT of people who love to say they're writers without having done anything - it's a harder skillset to judge unless you know exactly what to look for.
>>
>>154859262
Dude, you’re not going to find writers by going indie. You need to get money or funding, which is why most artists start out with comedy. It’s easy to write, cheap, and fast. No one’s going to criticize you for writing nonsense; you can even do something completely surreal. The most important thing is to get exposure and money. Even in these AI days, you still have to grind.

>>154859262
Respect is the main thing, if someone gives you that impression that’s probably not a candidate for someone you can treat as an equal aka work with

It feels very brown-coded to refuse to read books because they are "boring". Like, you see no value in reading and experiencing something unless it already directly appeals to you 100% off the bat, so you just don't bother.

It makes me feel like it's where all of the mentally stunted Gen-Xers and Millenials came from who are still going to conventions and buying merchandise for TMNT or He-Man while wearing anime hoodies, where they just didn't move on to more challenging media. I don't expect people to read nothing but pretentious modern garbage and dry stuffy "high literature" (though I think people are too quick to write off classic literature that's perfectly approachable and enjoyable because white men wrote it in the past), or that they ever have to stop liking things they grew up with, but I find it kind of embarrassing when I see these people who just kind of stopped developing their tastes beyond such a basic level.
>>
>>154853335
Start with easier things to read, like short stories. Some personal favourites: Flowers for Algernon, Harlon Ellison's short stories, Gabriel García Marquez's short stories. YA books could also be a good place to look, lots of great stuff there and they're usually easier to read. Watership Down, the Warrior Cats series, Enders Game are some great options.

Short stories are often easier to analyze as well if you're looking for takeaways to improve your own writing.

Reading is its own skill. If you haven't been reading for a while, your attention gets shot and you need to retrain it. So starting smaller and work your way towards harder work is a better idea than starting with a lot of the classics for example.

Also after you've trained yourself a bit I would highly recommend reading the Lord of the Rings. None of the films and shows so far can properly fully replicate it. Reading it is its own experience and the one true version of the story.

This is a big issue for me, lots of indie stuff is hilariously self-indulgent in the same way that fanfiction is.
Which is fine until you have stunted manchildren trying to tell you that fanfiction-level shit is some kind of masterful high art.
>>

I don't read books either. It feels like such a slog. I want to get to the point and books are made to meander about for a hundred-fifty pages.

I would enjoy graphic novels more if they were free. I really wanted to know how Delicious in Dungeon ended, found the manga translated online, and spent several hours thoroughly enjoying it.

I enjoy reading comments on things the most. It gives me a better understanding of what everybody thinks and whether my perspective is shared with others or bullshit.
>>
>>154861905
But that isn't a graphic novel, it's a manga. Graphic novels are shit like a comic book adaptation of Warriors or Wings of Power. And those definitely can be found for free on places like archive.org
>>
It's funny how people always jerk off classical authors and then you do a 2 second search on google and learn that they wrote tons of other books that are all considered hot garbage.

Just look at Jane Austin or Shakespeare.
>>
>>154862148
Is there really that much of a difference between a manga and a graphic novel? I would think all manga are graphic novels. Like how all anime is animation. Both are just Japanese.

I guess none have appealed enough to me to warrant a search. My YouTube watch list is too long anyhow.

And that's the annoying part of a lot of stories on A03. You go to hmofa, and half the shit, when it's not disgusting crap like anthro women snatching the most physically pathetic, low-test femme-boy human twinks with no self-esteem, and cringing and stammering mannerisms, instead of the strongest, healthiest mates they can find (who is this catering to? Gay bottoms trying to see if they like straight pron?), is fanfiction of stuff that you don't watch and wouldn't watch, instead of being something original. And it usually has really weird, esl-eque writing like "he charged his fist, sending a punch onto his attacker's chest with a thump".

This shit is why I avoid fanfiction like the plague these days, way too much of it is written by obvious ESLs who can't even figure out basic shit like keeping the pronouns consistent. ESLs REALLY struggle with understanding the difference between he, him, she, and her and when they should be used.

Most of them just like tropes and summaries (one author got a book deal because her trope list went viral). They like collecting, showing off their approved titles and making cute color schemes with the covers. But very few of them read.

Reading books (even if you haven’t done it for a long while) is great for making you immune from the kind of zoomer mentality where you end up unironically bitching that the general public doesn't respect animation, while hardly any new cartoons land with cultural impact.
It requires a really low level of life understanding to make that complaint. Literature, through immersion in other life experiences, grants meta awareness that transcends lives so you know if you're living a stupid ass one.

I would say that the reason so many people don't read and why it's on such a decline is moee due to our education system not evolving. It's still filled with boomers who have that mindset of "I can do it so no excuses as to why anyone else can't and I can't fathom why no one else can't". There's actually a specific work called like the durnkurk effect or something.

Anywho, education still refuses to teach kids how to properly read and the stigma of books having too many pictures means it's not real reading and for retards leads to more and more disinterest because kids are taught that their interests are bad and forced to read things they don't want too, while teachers don't bother to properly tell them why it's important to read said books.

Slightly related but back in high school everyone dreaded black history month, not because they where racist but because history and lit classes would force you to do a report on a famous black person, but you where never allowed to do any current famous black person as if anyone gives a shit about Harriet Tubmin or some random ass guy from the 1800s who slightly improved the razor blade.

Kids and people are more than willing to read and learn but about things they care about and find interesting and actually effects and matters in their current lives.

I'm dyslexic so I've always hated reading, but I love comics and manga. My mangadex profile is huge over all the manga I've read. My boomers parents don't consider manga reading, but I haven't seen them pick up a book in years. They even have kindles which are collecting dust.

A graphic novel is either literally a comic book adaptation of a novel, or a novel length story told in comic book format (for instance, if the Wings of Fire series only existed as the comic book series, it would still be considered a "graphic novel" series. A big digest of manga is called a tankoban, or trade paperback, but in order to make it easier to catalogue on websites and in bookstores they CALL it graphic novels. Doesn't mean it's correct.

No, they don't, brainlet. It's one thing when an author tells you Ivan Denisovich had it hard in a forced labor camp (with only one or two descriptions of such a life) and stops there and it's something else entirely when a day in his life is presented to you in a story form. The former does not communicate the human experience of being Ivan Denisovich, the latter does.

I wouldn't put erotica involving women getting stretched out by werewolves being on par with common literature, and as other stated many don't read them. It's the white women equivalent of a guy buying Games Workshop miniatures and never using them.
>>
>>154868169
>I wouldn't put erotica involving women getting stretched out by werewolves being on par with common literature ~~ other stated many don't read them.
I would, since most readers are women, and apparently "dark romantasy" is like one of, if not the largest genres being consumed right now.
I believe the stat is 80% of women's consumed literature is "erotica", or the thinly veiled term "romance" which has a WIDE variation of sub-genres underneath that umbrella.
>>
>>154868589
I think anon's point is that saying "I read" because you read romantasy about werewolf gigachad billionaire business heirs raping 5/10 college students is like me saying "I read" because I read AO3 isekai smut about a guy being transported to a world with reverse gender behaviors and a 10:1 female:male ratio where he fucks horny high school girls.

I think a lot of issues come from trying to be make story based series only to write the characters as if they're in a kids comedy. For example, all the characters in TADC have nothing deeper going with them and as a result the act like standard cartoon characters until it's time to trauma dump. These people WANT to make deeper shows but they don't know how. It also doesn't help that Burgerstan's views on animation could be has been fucked for decades (seriously we gave the two Demon Slayer movies R ratings and that series is babbys first shonen).
