Why, of all capeshit, does Japan love Spiderman and X-Men the most?
Not complaining but it's an interesting pattern I've noticed; capeshit nerds in Japan like those two specific properties from MAHVEL CONSISTENTLY.
Pic semi-unrel (yes it seems like they're generating aislop for threesome shipping lmao)
>>
>>154859020
They have a shitload of history with Spider-man, and X-Men are basically sentai to them.
>>
>>154859020
First off, it's Spider-Man. Secondly, CRY FOR THE MOOOOOOON!

Spidey got a live action tokusatsu thing, a manga and his appearances in fighting games since MSH.
Beyond that he's just well recognized from fame, and mangaka seem to appreciate his visually interesting action, BnH gave the main character an ability identical to web swinging and one of the villain types is based on Venom.

X-men got a jap dub for the cartoon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_kY9fpRsEc, fighting game appearances since CotA, an anime, and a lot of mangaka were inspired by the designs and powers.

Early exposure builds a foundation that builds off itself with time, basically.

Because they're the most interesting superheroes.

They have superpowers, external augmentations, interesting personalities, and cool aesthetics.

The augmentation part is what a lot of people miss. Spider-man realized that it would be helpful to swing from building to building, so he invented the web shooters, and Wolverine has the Adamantium skeleton.

This is important because it makes them seem a lot more thought-through than some overpowered self-insert that are just born or granted powers.

Because despite what leftists will tell you, Japan has great taste
>>
>>154859020
Because they're probably the closest in tone and style to shounen anime.
Heroes like Batman and Superman are very "adult" in that they're both grown men who more or less have their shit together. Japan prefers stories about teenagers or very young adults who are still figuring it out which is Spidey and the X-men.
>>
>>154859020
Spider-man is basically Kamen Rider and X-men are Cyborg 009.
I am not shitting you, they overlap quite a lot.

I would give that title to a person, Shotaro Ishinomor rather than spider-man.
>>
>>154859410

you kinda have to think about what was available to work with.when it comes to the 90s, there was xmen, spider man,(which they kinda have a base knowing of) batman (tas i feel would do well if translated well) iron man (could appeal to metal heroes fans) fantastic four (dont think this would be a good candidate) incredible hulk(would do well during the first season, only to get whiplash at season 2) ultraforce(a literal bunch of nobodies in marvel limbo) wildcats(more nobodies at the time)and super man. considering the xmen had game properties coming out in japan at the time, i can see why they were the number 2

>>
I bet they like classic Iron Man. https://youtube.com/watch?v=Y63i2NR9-LE
>>
>>154859458

ishimori for toku in general, sure, but the super part of super sentai is on spider mans shoulders
>>
>>154859020
My question is why do they only like live action and video games but the comics barely sell?
>>154859459
You have to consider that western action live action is way more popular than action western cartoons. I could see Iron man getting big because of the post 2000 movies and not because of the forgettable 90s cartoon.

Spider-Man has a strong history in Yamato thanks to the toei show. The Raimi movies were all top movies over there
>>
It's literally because of the hot teens angle. This is Marvel comics, who are also known for their swimsuit specials in the 90s whereas DC never really did anything like that. The most DC had was usually just Teen Titans and LoSH, the former only becoming famous in Asia after the Murakami cartoon and the latter is basically still nonexistent.
>>
>>154859474
I mean that's just normal. Nobody buys comics no matter where in the globe they are.
>>
>>154859474
probably because theres less to digest in a movie rather than a tv show, but there wasnt much live action to work with at the time like there is now outside of batman movies

Teens used to buy comics back in my day and Japan has a very strong comic culture, they buy their own comics all of the time.
>>
>>154859474
They already have manga and anime. The videogames was because Marvel was going bankrupt in the 90s and were looking for anything to make money on besides comics. But it turns out, them licensing all those third-party games was actually worth it in the long run because unlike their biggest competitor DC, they are not beholden to a corporate umbrella like Time-Warner, so they were just free to license off the characters easily to Japanese devs to make games on.
>>
>>154859486
By that I mean that the comics never sold on par with their own shonen stuff. I know that comics have never been globally popular but you would expect people to not ignore them if the characters are that popular considering the comics offer the best stories of those characters.
>>
>>154859486

American Comics aren't very popular even in America so them not being big in Japan is expected. That said, a problem is a lack of translations. Most Japs are really bad at reading English despite all the education. If you look at the replies to the marvel manga announcement a lot of the replies are from Japs asking for more comic translations
>>
>>154859524
They also use these comics to learn how to draw by the way beyond just using manga. There are a fuckton of Japanese artists who are inspired by Moebius, Mignola and Kirby.

Are they worth it? Translations should be done only if the demand is enough for it to be profitable and that's true for manga and european comics as well.

>>

I'm just going by memory, and can't be bothered to look it up right now, but if I remember correctly the idea that eventually became Battle Fever J -- which added giant mechs to the Sentai formula -- was original conceived as an Avengers toku to follow up Supaida-Man.

>Why, of all capeshit, does Japan love Spiderman and X-Men the most?
Because those are the characters Marvel made actual effort in marketing to Japan, and have successive generational cartoons and games. This is the same reason that until around 2008 there were the only Marvel characters the average NPC anywhere knew, along with the Hulk, largely because his 70s show existed in reruns long enough for generational knowledge of it.

I went to Japan in April and went to the Kyoto 'international manga museum' and Blister Comics in Tokyo. The manga museum was or course 99% Japanese manga but they had stuff like Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns. Blister Comics was a speciality store specifically for western comics and there was some modern translated stuff but the stuff getting best placement on the shelf and the stuff the clerk told me sells the best was stuff like pic related. They had Japanese translated comic adaptations of the films. There was also a Raimi Spider-Man movie comic I've never seen before.

I think they just like the movies because it's more accessible and then if they bother to read the comics at all they want stuff like the film. Probably a similar effect to how many people from English speaking countries will watch subbed or dubbed anime rather than actually make the effort to read manga.

Tbh there also just wasn't a huge selection of stuff actually translated into Japanese it was like a little bit of modern stuff then these film adaptation comics.
>>
>>154860239
These confirms my suspicion that most of them only care about the movies and video games rather than comics.
