I'm thinking the team is led by an unexpected female character such as the narrators wife from TWotW, the second is a subversion of the colonial explorer trope like Horace Holly, Dr. Frankenstein (and his monster), Captain Nemo (first book continuity), and maybe the time traveller from the time machine. Thoughts?
