>Constantly make homages to (plagiarize) actually good movies and tv series
>This is considered "top tier, smart writing"
Were standards really that low back then?

Meh bait. Work on credibility and remember, brevity is the soul of wit.

Was OP that gay back then?

All media consists of plagiarism. Originality is a meme

It's better than the "what if Moe had instagram" type shit they usually do.

The Simpsons still airing is like if The Flintstones was still making new episodes in the late 90s.

Nope

I've been rewatching a lot of the golden years and unfortunately it's not like there is a night and day difference when you take the overall 'temperature' of the series. The golden years had high highs, but the average episode is just 'cute' more than laugh out loud funny (of course, you get them every now and then). The issue with the 'modern' seasons is that since they don't hit those highs anymore, a lot of the mystique the show garnered especially when we couldn't just casually rewatch the old stuff is completely gone (and we always tend to remember the best parts of past things more than the opposite).

>The issue with the 'modern' seasons
the issue with the modern show is that any constructive critique that actually applies to it is completely dwarfed by the meta cringe and disgust of seeing a show born out of 1950s culture reimagined in the late 80s continue to exist with the same voice actors. it's like a kid asking santa to bring his dead dog back to life, there's nothing that can be done.

Back then?

I don't disagree with the spirit of what you're saying. The thing is, with the discourse around the show, I thought that every last golden age episode was Boy Scoutz N The Hood or Who Shot Mister Burns, and that every last modern Simpsons was "Lisa Goes Ga Ga", and that's far from the case. As someone else put it, the "mechanics" of the show are largely intact. Which is probably why the "Zombie Simpsons" nomenclature is so apt. It's going through the motions, and most compliments you can make are exactly mechanical.
It's missing soul.

i grew up not knowing what a huge proportion of the simpsons was ripping off movies, and watched an entirely different show than the adults around me.
