More and more I think Superman's main appeal besides power fantasy and doing good, is pure sci-fi. All of his writers were 100% sci-fi geeks who basically took all the pulps and even older classic sci-fi books like The Time Machine and Frankenstein to heart. They then expanded those explorations of real science and heightened them or explored new landscapes. Sure, it's hard to do that and find new ground but that is what I think is part of Superman's appeal.
