Why do indie cartoons want to be like TV so badly? This wasn't a big deal back in the 2000s, people made shit with whatever resources they had. Now every indie creator wants a staff of 20 animators, high production value with budgets running from the tens to hundreds of thousands and having to make Kickstarters to even exist

>>154870233>This wasn't a big deal back in the 2000s, people made shit with whatever resources they hadanimators aren't teens living with their parents when youtube actually gave people money anymore
>>154870233Mainstream media in America overall is ass and people are putting much more support to indies so the country doesn't get completely dominated by anime.
>>154871350What happened to having a job and making animations on the side?
>>154871460"On the side" is the biggest normie meme out thereNobody does substantial creative work on le sideYou either go all in or not at all
>>154870233Indie creators are genuinely out of touch. They do not understand that the indie animation scene is really two separate things:>independent amateur web series made by a small group of people on their spare time with little to nothing in terms of budget>mid-to-low budget professional series that requires a lot of well-used time, money, and people just to get everything done on timeThe first option is healthier for a work-life balance and contributes towards long-term interest in an artist's portfolio. The downside is that it takes a lot of time to get things done, updates might not always be consistent, and the scope will be limited. The second option requires money, manpower, and interest from an audience. It sounds simple in practice, but is a fucking nightmare when you actually have to do it. An artist has to build up an audience while also making something that can appeal towards consumers outside of their existing fanbase (tap into the cultural zeitgeist), they need the money and people required to actually get it done (which inevitably means people will be overworked and underpaid), they need to make sure everything gets done on time and everyone pulls their weight, and when all is said and done IT NEEDS TO BE A SUCCESS>>154871215People can fling all the shit they want at Viv for her writing being hot garbage but Viv has more business sense than almost everyone in the indie community. Hazbin is by no means a "good show" but it has filled a niche that nobody thought to exploit first and targeted multiple demographics at once. Furries, the Tumblr/Deviantart crowd, LGBT theater kids, tween edgelords, kids with a bone to pick against "the man", musical lovers, 2000s CN fans and Tim Burton enthusiasts, etc.Every other indie animated pilot is just "quirk chungus slice of life". There's no intrigue or hook or any character to obsess over.
>>154870233Memes are memes they're not black, white, hispanic, asian, male, female, non-binary, or LGBTQIA. They are for everyone to use regardless or who you are or what you identify as. Assigning identifiers to images is just another way to divide this already fractured world.
>>154870233Most cartoonists want to make the cartoon they always dreamed of having broadcast on an actual TV network like CN or Nickelodeon.
actual TV shows have been declining and indie shows want to take their place, That, and the fact that indie developers have the privilege of not having executives that forces them to change things or release more stuff for the sake of content
>>154870233I'm wondering why they want to be like the animation industry... again. GLITCH and SpindleHorse are proof of this, considering GLTICH recently sold out to Amazon not too long ago.

>>154871617How common actually are these wagies or school (or whatever) slice of life shows. I haven't explored the scene in depth, but with what little I could gather, I would say that 5 out of 15 projects I've watched were that. This is an off-the-cut estimate with what I have watched. Keeping to mostly users on Youtube who have a series or multiple animations going on, with the rare exception.Non slice: piemations, krinkels, alan becker, flashgitz, alfabussa, asatoshi, marco cárdenas, machoboy, doodletmego, make originals, joel g, speedoru, cas van de pol, meatcanyon, sr pelo, edsworld, gildedguy, atastic, dungeon soupSlice: georghiou, metal family, mike carf, izzzyzzz (made wastelandia and deleted it), ls mark (Catching Up), moon doggieDunno where to put worthikids, Bigtop Burger is like half slice half cartoon weird.Feel free to expand the list.
>>154870446>>154873582There's this and this>>154871215>>154875625They see someone make it big and they want to be the next big thing, not understanding the limit of their own capabilities or resources, or how the people they're using as their bar are the exception, not the norm. Mix it high aspirations of making a cartoon show like mainstream media, because it's their passionate dream and you have emerging animators who want to play it safe and make it big, or are otherwise unispired and have some weird corpo mentality ingrained on them.
