Mutants are good because modern day morality hinges on oppressed minorities, not individual actions. If an oppressed minority does something bad, like in the OP, then it is because they are oppressed and not because they have agency or a relationship with moral actions (good or bad). This is a form of moral nihilism few will ever really admit.
