>"Cyclops' powers initiate through foreign energies channeled from an entirely different plane of existence and channeled through his body into concussive blasts that are released from his eyes."
Wtf, I thought his Optic Blast was powered by the Sun.

Portals to the punch dimension
>>
>>154872291
Depends on who's writing.
>>
>>154872291
I try not to be too much of a party pooper with this stuff, but watching Cyclops do shit in '97.... his fuckin' neck would snap. Is a super tough neck part of his mutant power?
>>
For me its

>solar powered access to the punch dimension with no recoil and immunity to Havok's attacks
>>
I see literally no reason to not just keep it simple and say it's an intense laser beam
The punch dimension thing is retarded
>>
>>154873110
Because it punches, it doesn't laser
>>
>>154872291
I still think it is just a concussion beam of force. Not saying like PUNCH but the same way with plasma is more like a liquid to gas discharge when interacting with oxidizing when pass through air. So the discharge is so fast and powerful that is like a super heated shockwave from a sonic boom.
>>
>>154872291
That was a thing in a marvel handbook from like 1980 and removed in the next one. It wasn't in the comics and was written by somebody who just made something up because the comics hadn't explained it yet.
They've since explained that his powers work the same way his brothers' powers work.
>>
>>154872291
unrelated but all the artwork in that game kicks ass
>>
Leave it to comic book writers to take something simple and make it convoluted as fuck for absolutely no reason.
>>
>>154873431
Then retcon it so that it's just a Laser. An eye's lens focusing sun power to make a laser makes more sense then Portals to the 'punch dimension'.
>>
>>154872291
>>154873110
Later writers thought the whole sun powered thing did not explain the amount of power he could shoot. But the whole punch dimension thing doesn't explain how he can force more power if he wants to shoot harder, which goes back to the first X-Men issue.
>>
>>154872291
Would he win against Superman’s heat vision?
>>
>>154873596
Why not just say it's an infinite energy that they don't understand or something instead of doing something retarded that makes even less sense
>>
>>154873615
supes heat beams can reach into the millions of degrees.

I thought Cyclops just adjusted the strength of his beam with his visor like a camera aperture . Even the first X-Men movie shows this.
>>
>>154873766
The very first X-Men comic shows that as well.

I wonder how much utter nonsense was made up over the years by Marvel Handbook writers with no input from a character's creators or even their current writer, and how much of that nonsense ended up actually affecting the characters for the worse, unlike the punch dimension, which the actual comics just never mentioned at all, but it took on meme status because of how stupid it is.

Basically, if something hadn't been established in canon within an actual comic, the Handbooks should have been forced to give the answers as "we don't know yet" and not allowed to just make things up.
>>
>>154874505
>making hard choices and IS RIGHT
You retards always self-insert as the Magneto Lite version of Cyclops like you want to larp a race war. If he was so right, why is he a mutant?
>>
>>154872291
He reminds me of Soft Server, whose power isn't just that she can poo ice cream; it's because there's a portal to an ice cream dimension inside her body. But where does her poop go? Does it end up in the ice cream dimension, contaminating it? Or does her body have another portal to a different dimension where she sends her faeces? If so, that would be proof that intelligent design exists in the Marvel Universe.
>>
>>154875460
You're right, no straight guy would ever self-insert as the handsome, rich, superpowered leader of a team of superheroes who has pulled top-shelf tail all his life.
>>
>>154872759
He doesn't experience any kickback from his beams because they don't come from his eyes, they merely go THROUGH his eyes. He's also completely immune to his own powers (and his brothers' powers) so technically if someone would eflect his beams back at him he wouldn't be affected.
>>
>>154872291
>he doesn't know about punch dimension
>>
>>154875693
But anon, in the series he uses his power to slow down his fall from a plane. How does he do that if he doesn't experience kickback?
>>
>>154873110
Punch dimension let writers make it less lethal, instead of heat laser it's a kinetic force that punch his enemies.

Not even with a rented dick, don't put pussy on a pedestal, Cyclops can have those bitches.
>>
>>154875693
But in '97, he is using his blasts to kick himself around during the fight, and slow himself down from falling out of a plane. If the kickback is enough to push around a 195 pound man (holding a teenager in the first fight scene) that's enough force to blow his fucking head off.

powered by the sun is impossible

first off most of the day he's either dressed like that or dressed like an adult western man; he rarely even has his arms exposed, let alone his legs, so for most of the time he's got nothing more than his face, or maybe his face, neck and hands, getting exposure to sunlight; and only the portions of his skin that are directly exposed to light are going to gather much energy, the amount gathered by bare skin even in shadow is minimal

if he was a totally naked square with the same surface area pointed directly at the sun in upstate NY (where he usually lives) he'd average 12 hours of sunlight per year, some of it significantly less energetic (due to the latitude of NY in wintertime the sunlight reaching it has to pass through more atmosphere and so the energy reaching him is less, as random air molecules collide with the photons and absorb their energy), well

let's call his flat square 1.9m^2 which is a large human, he'd generate about 1.25kWh per day; or enough to operate a shitty water heater for 1 hour before his entire day's energy is expended

if it were solar - and it's not, but if it were - then he, like Superman and other idiots claimed to be solar-powered, would become enormously heavy by absorbing all that energy, as in, he would noticeably be falling through floorboards, digging himself into pits, having to walk everywhere on comical snowshoes to distribute his mass more evenly, and it'd break all his bones too because he doesn't have super-strength or anything like that

the punch dimension shit isn't any better is he doesn't appear to experience Newton's second law even though he should break his neck or at least flip his ass over every time his eye beams connect to solid objects with any meaningful force (funnily enough this is the reason Iron Man was given hand jets to stabilise himself in the 1960s - because a jet pack, let alone jet booties, would just flip him over like his first time on a skateboard)

>1968
Its an optic blast powered by the sun.
>1983
The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Vol. 1 #3 (1983) introduced a significant science-fiction retcon: Cyclops’ eyes are interdimensional apertures to a non-Einsteinian universe filled with particles that resemble photons but transfer kinetic energy (as gravitons) upon interacting with objects in our universe, generating powerful directional concussive force. His body metabolizes ambient energy (e.g., sunlight) to open and focus these apertures. The beams themselves originate from this other dimension (later fan-nicknamed the “Punch Dimension”). This explained the lack of recoil on Scott and the pure-force nature while superseding a purely solar-generation model. A psionic field generated by his mind protects his own body (and eyelids) from the beams.
>1986
The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition (around Vol. 2 #3 / 1986 entries) walked back the pure interdimensional model. It returned emphasis to metabolizing sunlight/starlight (and ambient energy) to generate the force beams, noting that prolonged sunlight deprivation could cause a dangerous physiological imbalance. Some versions retained hybrid language: eyes as interdimensional apertures opened/powered by absorbed ambient energy (sunlight, etc.). The precise storage mechanism for the energy remained unknown. Comic stories continued to show solar/ambient energy absorption (including rare cases of absorbing other energies, such as lightning), depletion with overuse, and the head-injury control explanation. Immunity to his own blasts (and later to Havok’s similar energies) was attributed to a psionic field or related mutation.
>1990's
By the late 1980s–1990s, the working synthesis in handbooks and stories was typically: body absorbs ambient energy (primarily solar) to power the projection of heatless ruby-colored concussive force from the eyes (sometimes still framed with interdimensional apertures).
>>
>>154875693
>e's also completely immune to his own powers

he can't be immune to his own powers because they're beams of force; that would mean he couldn't move, breath, or do anything

he'd be totally inert; force is not selective

>>154872759
it would absolutely kill him the very first time it happened

>>154873110
the heat of that laser beam would burn off his face and boil away his eyes as soon as he fired it; even if he's "immune" to his powers while they're in his body, once they start affecting reality outside his body - that intense
heat is going to superheat the air, and since we know he feels heat and cold (and can be burned, frozen etc like anybody else), that air would burn his face off, not to mention his lungs as he'd be breathing burning atmosphere; it would melt his costume onto his body and ignite the costume; his "ruby quartz" visor would be useless at temps over 1,100C (and permanently thereafter - the crystalline structure is destroyed), so even if *he* can magically withstand the heat his eye beams generate (which to be fair also applies to kinetic force beams, even though those aren't a real thing - he should be smacking air around fast enough to superheat it with those, too), his vital visor would simply be destroyed by the hot lazor

not to mention that with either option, eventually he'd be outputting so much energy (necessary to put the beams through air to reach the target) that he'd be splitting atoms, causing gamma ray bursts that would kill everything and everyone around them (and probably most of earth with the more ridiculous outputs)

it's a bad power made worse by power creep and fanwankservice
>>
These niggas writing thesis trying to make logical sense of funny books
>>
Why does a fucking mutation have extra-dimensional properties.
>>
>>154876628
>1968
stupid
>1983
that would make him the world's most powerful telekinetic, absolutely shitting on pre-Phoenix Marvel Girl, like literally just holding her down and shitting on her face, but also the "punchtons" would be constantly interacting with air, his visor etc (his visor would explode, shattering hot shards of ruby-quartz into his eyes and face, which with the lacerations alone would kill him in minutes), generating heat; but this graviton-like interaction also means he'd likely just be generating a singularity directly in front of his face, sucking him in and killing him instantly (and unless they're real lucky, everybody around him too - although as a micro-singularity it might cease to exist quite soon after)

>1986
sunlight doesn't work, it's like trying to charge your car from the solar panel on a pocket calculator, it is simply not viable even with "ambient energy" (which if we think about it in any detail also means heat, meaning he'd make a room cold just walking into it, and eventually he'd freeze you - they gave him Iceman's powers to explain his dumb eye beams, so now Bobby is the one getting shit in his mouth)

the storage idea is equally insane because to use that much energy (as demonstrated even then many times) his mass would have to greatly increase

walking back the psionic thing is good

>1990s
storage isn't viable, solar isn't viable, heatless is insane (as kinetic energy will become heat energy simply by colliding with his visor, never mind the air he needs to breathe)

for a small-time power used little and smartly it's fine, for cutting through a fucking Sentinel in motion coming toward him... nah, nah
>>
Current (as of 2026): Blasts are pure kinetic/concussive force (no inherent heat). Powered by ambient energy absorption that enables interdimensional apertures in the eyes. Uncontrolled without ruby-quartz due to a mix of residual physical trauma and psychological blocks. Visor allows precise regulation of size, intensity, and direction. Secondary traits (spatial geometry mastery for ricochets, self-immunity) remain consistent.

He has an aperture in his eye, thats opened by absorbing ambient energy primarily solar. When that aperture is opened via the absorbing of ambient energy it allows the passage of the optic blast from another dimension into this one.
>>
>>154876775
why does Magneto only have control of one of the fundamental forces of the universe when by having that he should control the rest

why does Storm have the ability to manipulate "weather" which isn't even all one thing

why does Iceman have the ability to manipulate ice but not water and not the weather

>>
>>154876779
Youre not even reading the premise correctly.
The aperature itself is opened/ powered by sunlight. Its basically a tiny little gateway that needs ambient energy like solar to open.
The beams come from another non-einsteinian dimension.
>>
>>154876807
that's not what's being said until >>154876795

but even so the solar thing is incredibly stupid, if you or i could absorb useful amounts of solar, we'd have evolved to do that

>>
>>154876824
What if its like photosynthesis but instead of producing chloroform its producing concussive optic blasts and the metabolic exchange is just crazy from a little bit of sunlight.
Think of it like superman. How much power he gets from the sun. Its not proportional to his output bs intake.
>>
>>154876824
It seems like your refusing accept the answers out of wanting to argue something with a simple answer.
>>
>>154876824
Why do you think the metabolic exchange of solar has to be at a certain rate.
Its easily explained away by saying cyclops probably has an insane metabolic exchange from solar energy, just like superman.

>>154872291
Superman is powered by the sun for heat vision/ x ray vision.
Cyclops is powered by the sun for concussive optic blasts from an aperature in his eye

It's not a matter of "feeling or not feeling recoil." If his blasts are generating enough force to move, being generous, something like 350 pounds, that means 350 pounds of force is being consistently absorbed by his fuckin' neck. If it generates enough force to push him, or slow his falling, it kills him.
honestly, if it has enough force to push other people around on the other side of the beam, it should also be enough to snap his neck, what with equal but opposite force and all. It's the same reason why John Woo style shotgun blasts throwing the victim 20 feet backwards is unrealistic. But I find it easier to accept some sort nonsense about that.
