Why the fuck would two sides start a war about something they don't support? Of course there were some Union states that banned slavery, but some of them didn't, and the whole point of state rights is that they wanted each state to choose what they wanted to do. The federal government was completely fine with the Confederate states owning slaves. There's a quote from la letter by Lincoln of him explicitly stating he's indifferent to slavery continuing so long as it prevents a succession.
One common counter-argument is that the Confederate constitution enabled slavery. 1. That's not evidence that was the cause of the war given that it's just saying they enabled something the Union also enabled, not a counterargument to my main point. 2. Right underneath that line, the constitution says that it only requires 3 states in a vote to change the constitution so it's very likely they would've changed that law and abolished slavery anyway. I'm asked what makes me think the Confederacy would've abolished slavery. Uhm... maybe the fact that they fucking did in real life before all the Union territories did. The last state to abolish slavery was Delaware. I remember reading an article that said slavery in Alabama was only fully banned in the 1990s. Goes to show how far these people are willing to lie to perpetuate their narrative.
