ITT we post/discuss black heroes and villains that we like.

Do black characters really overwhelmingly have lightning powers?

Hey, they can know kung fu too

Name 10 with lightning powers.
>>

I think Mal Duncan is painfully overlooked. He's DC's first black hero and he deserves better than he's gotten.

>>154879667
It's really not that many. You have Black Lightning, Storm, and Static, and then their variants and brand extensions. Then people will start lumping in any tech or energy based black characters because they want to prove a point. Like people will call Miles an electricity based hero because of the venom sting but not Jessica Drew when she has literally the exact same power. Or say Cyborg is an electric based hero but never say that about Tony Stark.

Blacks tend to electricity or machine powers because both are tied to industrialization which freed them from slavery.
Subconscious understanding: re-applying what humanized them (legally) to super-humanize them.

Storm, Black bolt, Static Shock, uhh

>Black bolt,
Despite the name he's not a black lightning based.
>>
>>154880116
I personally haven't heard much in the way of Cyborg being called an electric superhero, but Miles 100% is. Not just because of the venom touch but because he makes swords and shit out of electricity. One of his whole things is being able to generate bio-electricity. When he could only do the venom touch thing I wouldn't have considered him electric-based, but we're past that point.

Soul Power is one of the DCAU characters that should be in the comics.
Like with the Justice Guild and Permafrost.
>>
>>154879571
People complain about that like lightning is the coolest magic. Fuck fire and ice.

Look it's not crazy
brown skin (or brown hair if you're white) goes very nicely with deep, cool colors. Dark blue, dark purple, whatever. What goes with those? Gold. Gold goes with those. Pops real nice. What does gold evoke? lightning.
look at Frozone. His costume clashes completely with his skin. there's a reason heroes like that are usually caucasian or maybe eskimo or ainu for the theming, or even some kind of blue-or chalk-skinned mutant. Plus, yknow, tropical people.. cold.. it doesn't fit.
Look how many hispanic fire guys there are. you know why? red and orange look fucking great on golden tan skin. Or, again, hair. the caucasian fire guys are usually honey-blond. It's just color theory, it's not tryin to be racist.
>>154880116
Cyborg is a walking Tuskeegee Experiment metaphor. His own parents did it to him. That doesn't take a fucking guidebook.
>>
>>154880641
>There can only be one character with lightning powers
How many Flashes do we have? How many Green Lanterns? How man-
>>
>>154880378
I love how much more logical these guys are vs the steampunk setting of Nadia where they see a girl with light brown skin, purple hair, and generic middle eastern / caucasian features and go 'oh, you must be from Africa. Let's go visit and find your folks'

I mean she did have a lion cub with her, but he's a circus lion!
>>
>>154880663
>It's just color theory, it's not tryin to be racist.
I didn't think it was racist, anon.
>>
>>154880667
two wrongs don't make a right. those are all overglutted character-slots. the lanterns are like fuckin ... trying to fit way too many action figures on one shelf.
>>154880683
well when it's "overwhelmingly" so, that suggests, at best, a stereotyping. and stereotyping is only okay when it's correct. like if you wanna stereotype white people as sunburning more easily. you're good.
>>
>>154880663
Cyborg is supposed to be a take on Frankenstein's monster. They say it straight-up in his origin comic.
>>
>>
>>154879571
>really overwhelmingly have lightning powers?
Yes, at least 10 charactets I know of ate electricity based.
>>
>>154880658
Miles Morales too
>>
>>154880116
I don't consider Storm an electric based character since she has access to more than electricity.

Cyborg is a tech based character and while technology runs on electricity, its not like he manipulates magnetism or spams electric attacks.
>>
>>154881159
Do you know what happens to a toad when its struck by lightning?
>>
>>154881211
Electrocution, but Storm powers let her do other things that aren't electricity related.
>>
>>154879571
Why was his electricity green
>>

Anyone here likes Icon and Rocket?
>>
>>154883444
I do. Wish Icon had gotten more screen time in YJ.
Surprised they've not made anything with them outside that, guess its a rights issue.

Here is a sample, Some of them don't sell themselves as electric supeheroes but have electricity as one of their abilities. Other have not necessarily have "lighting" powers but their powers manifest with something similar to electricity.

At least this guys are either pastiches to Black Lighting or exist because they wanted to use Black Lighting but DC didn't want to pay the creator so they went for a legally distinct substitute.

They didn't had to make this one off character who only appears in one panel black but they did it anyway
>>
>>154879571
Ms. Megawatt, doesn't look black once she got her powers but she is black, voices by Whoopi Goldberg.
>>
>>154879571
I think it all stems from blaxsploitstion. The character they want defines the powers and they have a set of personalities they assume to be 'black.' Of course, this logic can make any superhero a racist caricature because it is a very mutated form of anthropomorphismastion. Really to get over this is to take the reverse approach, give a black African American a power then letting the character shape itself around that. Don't worry about race and just do what is cool.

Pic related is slop but it's slop I made. I was making game tokens for a tabletop game which doesn't have any 2D tokens so I made some. I wanted to make a black urban professional killer kind of guy and a telepathic OCC came up so did this. I wanted a human that acts real cool because he can kill people with telepathic powers. So he has that smiling sinister aura. I don't know if that follows the rules I set out but I like the result.

This one is not technically electrical but is one of those characters who manifest her non lighting power are electricy anyway.

I think part of the reason as to why black characters keep getting lightning/tech powers is because they're "safe". If you slap ANY other kind of superpower onto a black character, people will stupidly make it into a race thing (either for jokes or out of hate), find some way to draw parallels with black stereotypes, or bend over backwards to slander the author as a racist.

Spawn and Blade are cases where this DIDN'T happen because they're supernatural heroes.

All the depictions of psychic powers look like it involved intense strain. It was sweat and forehead veins or deciding on an psychic energy effect. Had to manually input the tooth gap, which is a shame. Not enough black characters have tooth gaps.

I think there are more that are geniuses that build armor and gadgets than electric ones.

The only electric ones I can think of are
Black Lightning,
Lightning,
Black Vulcan,
Static Shock,
Miles has electric powers for some reason,
and Ultimate Electro

>>
>>154879571
Yes and no. Black heroes in say like the big 2 are not comprised of even a small subsect of lightning users, the issue is when it comes to parody pieces of superheroes, they default to electricity for black heroes. It's largely in part because DC made Black Lightning twice because of legal issues.
>>
>>154881426
This is why I hate miles morales getting treated as an electric user, it's just with one attack
>>
>>154884916
Anon meant that giving any other kind of power to black people suddenly makes it about race, you give them animal powers or an Animal costume and suddenly you are implying Africa in some way, Give them magic powers and people are going to imply voodoo, besically you are screwed either way.

By the standards of this post like 70% of all superheroes have electric powers. Are you serious? Monica Rambeau? Bumblebee? The Shazams? Amazing Man?

She used to had a flying bee suit and gadgets, modern version have her with shirking powers and those electric things she uses to zapp people. Not completely lighting based but they sort of put the electricity front and center when befor she had other stuff going for her.
>>
>>154886123
Honestly I hate it. What, is electric powers synonymous with hip shaking ability? Are those African comedy dancers electro mutants Supreme
