Why did Americans abandon Duck comics for super hero comics?

Kids have shit taste.

Capes became more popular and it's natural to follow the money in a capitalist system. The better question is why didn't Americans abandon cape comics for random kids with superpowers comics like Japan did when the trends left cape comic behind.

After the Comics code, the easiest comics to make within the rules were superhero comics, so they exploded in popularity.

Nice disappointments.

The guys who made the good stuff had mostly hung up their pens by the late 60s, and there was a good long while before US audiences got introduced by Gladstone to European stuff, and other US talents would come around. But by then superhero books had taken over most of the market.

from what I gathered the comics code killed every genera that wasn't superheroes, westerns or war. then comics become niche industry in the 70's, not sold at newsstands or checkout counter, but the same core of nerds going into specialty stores and habit buying variant covers.
They didn't go back to the other generas when they could, the only competitor is Archie, outside the jap and french market.

Cause they didn't have mafia money to launder anymore.

Because most of the scum in this country don't understand kino and will eat up anything the government sells to them.

Literally the opposite happened - funny animal books became easier to sell after the CCA was founded because superhero comics got trashed by Wertham. It was only thanks to TV shows and Stan Lee and his Bullpen revitalising the genre that superheroes regained their popularity
