Previously, after a shocking display of magical power it was theorized that Wiccan and Speed may really be the sons of the Scarlet Witch. The Young Avengers intended to try and find her and show that her sons were still alive hoping it would cause her to undo the mutant Decimation and bring back those who died during Disassembled. Magneto found them and they agreed to help him find her, heading to Transia where they also encountered Quicksilver and realized that Wanda was in fact being held by Doctor Doom.

Wiccan snuck out and transported himself to Latveria, infiltrating Castle Doom where he found an amnesiac Wanda and learned that she wasn't Doom's prisoner but his fiance. Wiccan told Wanda his and the Scarlet Witch's history while she snuck him out only to find the Young Avengers and Avengers battling. Wolverine broke off intending to kill Wanda but was stopped by a returning Iron Lad.

Today is Avengers: The Children's Crusade #5-9.

I was thinking this in the last storytime too, but the letterer really just hamfists those logos into the text boxes and it is fucking glaring. No punctuation at all, really?
It'd feel like a nitpicky complaint if it wasn't every single time.

In general I'm kind of sick of logos being part of word balloons. It feels like it's mostly a thing that cropped up in the 2000s but I'm sure it existed earlier. It takes me out of what I'm reading though. I see the logo and my mental voice reads the name like it's being said in a big echoey announcer voice which is just cheesy.

Seeya Kid Vision, you... kind of did not much of anything during your existence. Even dumber, because of the many, many delays in this series this issue came out months after the actual Vision came back in Avengers after Fear Itself.

Eli basically disappears for a long time for reasons that have never really been elaborated on. Some say it's just plans for him fell through, others have said it was legal issues between Marvel and the estate of Isaiah Bradley's creator but no actual reason has ever been given. He only started showing up again around the time of Empyre.

That finishes off things for the Young Avengers in this storytime series. As I said when I did the ongoing, with hindsight I don't think Young Avengers is all that good. I liked it at the time but I ultimately think it benefitted from having low expectations and twists that, back then, seemed interesting but ultimately were kind of nothing.

I think Children's Crusade exacerbates and amplifies big problems that were always there in Heinberg's writing. Way too decompressed, very Bendisy in his dialogue and everything just feels weightless. Like Children's Crusade is a reasonably consequential series. Wanda returns, Cassie dies (but will come back in 2014 during AXIS), Scott Lang returns... but it just has no weight. It's an unremarkable and completely unmemorable story despite everything that happens.... and it takes forever to tell. This sure as hell did not need to be 9 issues when there was about 4, maybe 5, issues worth of actual meat. So yeah reevaluating it, I don't really like Young Avengers as much as I did back in the day and don't think it holds up all that well.

Anyway that's it for today. Next time will go back to Anya Corazon with Spider-Girl #1-4.

The series has flaws but I thought this scene was good, the idea that Wanda’s memories are triggered by revisiting how “Avengers Disassembled” began.

You can tell that this story was really conceived as a follow up to “Disassembled” and was reworked once House of M introduced the whole mutant genocide thing.

It’s really about the Young Avengers finding Wanda, reviving Scott, but suffering two losses as a result. But it’s weighted down with all this Decimation talk, which is all pointless because this story doesn’t have the power to reverse the Decimation.
>>
>>154904969
>Why do I have the feeling this isn't going to be pretty?
Classic Wanda was always pretty.
>>
>>154905525
Why the fuck was he even here? It feels like I missed an issue of backstory where this guy (who was very reasonably told to fuck back off or destroy everything, and did so because he was a hero) found a way to reasonably come back. And he only comes back so that he can become a little Kang?
I went to bat for Iron Lad, I thought the idea of a young Kang that wasn't set on being Kang was fun. How did the original creator of the character manage to fumble him so fucking hard? I feel like I misunderstood why he existed by the end of this.
>>
>>154905509
>Seeya Kid Vision, you... kind of did not much of anything during your existence.
The worst part is how this very series established they were capable of rebuilding him but chose not to bring him back to a world where Cassie was dead, but by the time she came back they just forgot about him.

>>154905621
>others have said it was legal issues between Marvel and the estate of Isaiah Bradley's creator
I don't see how that would even make sense.

>>154906510
>You can tell that this story was really conceived as a follow up to “Disassembled” and was reworked once House of M introduced the whole mutant genocide thing.
Originally it would've been the main plot of a second year of Young Avengers starting in 2006, but Heinberg's TV commitments plus Cheung also having trouble with a monthly schedule led to it being turned into a mini that didn't start until 2010 and took 2 years to complete, and bringing back Wanda was off-limits to other writers before then, though there were a number of fake-outs.

>But it’s weighted down with all this Decimation talk, which is all pointless because this story doesn’t have the power to reverse the Decimation.
It's absurd to think that one writer wrecked the X-books by going from there being maybe a few thousand mutants to millions of them, the EIC mandated they cut down to a few hundred, and the writers' reaction for years was to make all the stories about trying to reverse this EIC-mandated development instead of just getting back to normal AND the EIC just let them do this.

>>154906715
>How did the original creator of the character manage to fumble him so fucking hard?
Probably aiming for the idea that young Kang can't cheat or escape his own destiny.
>>
>>154906781
>and bringing back Wanda was off-limits to other writers before then, though there were a number of fake-outs
There was an issue of New Avengers where Hawkeye was shown as having been sleeping with Wanda or something like that which turned out to be the Doombot Wanda from this story.
>>
>>154906922
It's something Bendis shipped and kept trying to force as a thing, even after this story, because for a writer who retcons other people's work all the time, he's astonishingly thin-skinned about his own work being retconned.
>>
>>154906964
It's not so much thinskinned as much as it is he doesn't care about anything anyone else writes so it doesn't register to him. He basically lives in his own little world where only his stories happen and his characterization and petty likes/dislikes are paramount like his weird hatred of Tigra.
