I've heard rumours that he was signed on to a Netflix thing, and part of the contract was a non-compete clause forbidding him from doing anything for like 5 or 10 years or something insane.
He signed it, thinking he'd get bankrolled, but Netflix is a fucking black hole where creativity goes to die, so they cancelled it all and now he's basically trapped in limbo until his shitty contract expires

I know he knows Disney would pay whatever he wanted for more Gravity Falls content, which is why he keeps making books and whatever... but unless Disney can somehow buy out his contract I don't think he'll get to make anything else
