What are the /co/-approved stories and runs for Spider-Man? The essentials.
>Ditko's run
>Romita's run under Stan
>Gerry's runs in ASM, Spec, and Web
>Roger Stern's run
>Bill Mantlo Spec
>PAD Spec
>JMD's Spec and ASM

>DeFalco's runs
>Michelinie's runs with Todd, Larsen, and Bagley
>JMS's first half until ASM 500

Reading 60s Spiderman because the depths of my autism are unfathomable.

Jesus, imagine this vocabulary being a byword for "instantly appealing girl".
>>
>>154967806
Well it was the late 60's early 70's being written by a guy who enlisted in WW2. So yeah it's dated on one level and perhaps misused on another level by a guy who was trying to be hip. Stan did succeed a bit in being hip considering him and Marvel's forays into psychedelic Dr. Strange and Silver Surfer stuff was what that generation wanted alongside realistic political/social issues being at least addressed or brought up. So that vocab I think isn't completely out of touch. Though I have no idea when groovy started to basically become a tired phrase.
But yeah at that time it was ok considering Vietnam vets were writing in saying they want more MJ.
>>
>>154966112
I know the “Chad vs. Virgin” meme is played out, but it's true. Ditko's Peter is the best Peter. No matter how much people try to psychoanalyze the character and imply that Ditko's objectivist views plagued him. And his reaction to civil rights protests is a rare example of well-written characterisation that’s still uncommon in comic books, which are surprisingly apolitical even when they’re tackling political issues. Few writers delve into that kind of thing.
>>
>>154967942
>Vietnam vets were writing in saying they want more MJ
I wonder which kind of mags, between porn or Marvel comics, were seen as more embarassing contraband in warzones and occupation bases.
>>
>>154967957
For the last time, Ditko's objectivist views did not plague Peter Parker in the Ditko run.

https://elvingsmusings.wordpress.com/2022/06/07/ditko-rand-the-objectivist-spider-man/

That being said, Randian/Objectivist ideology was a notable influence on Marvel Comics alongside hero pulps, horror fiction, sci-fi, and circus/carnival culture. Dr Strange certainly is THE Ditko Randian hero next to Mr A who's just pure propaganda.
>>
>>154968046
I said that Ditko parodies were trying to take a dig at the man. But they ignore the fact that Ditko didn't do that with the character. Someone even pointed out that a lot of the writing was lifted from *The Flash* comics but with more attitude. Clowes has one of the best takes on Ditko, even though he's one of those coffee-sipping liberal hipsters.
>>
>>154968046
Which comic has Peter shaking his fist at them from an apartment window? Or is that Blue Beetle?

I miss this shit the most. Holy fuck the lack of spine in modern Peter is disgusting. Literally nobody respects Spider-Man and will take every chance to put him down, and he'll go "haha, so true..."
Hell, he can't go TWO MINUTES without making self-deprecating comments himself, completely unprovoked.

The second thing I miss the most is Spider-Man actually saying funny shit instead of desperate attempts at stand-up.
>>
>>154968209
people around here were certainly into the last spider-man movie
>>
>>154968284
>Literally nobody respects Spider-Man and will take every chance to put him down
The most schizophrenic shit in modern Marvel is how everyone treats Sṕider-Man like some worthless annoyance and want him gone as soon as he shows up, but the moment Peter actually lets the vitriol get to him and tries to make some changes in his life, for better or worse, suddenly everyone goes: "NOOOOO YOU CAN'T DO THAT YOU'RE NOT BEING YOURSELF!"

It gets even worse when Peter isn't present. THEN he's some kind of symbol of heroism to the same people who sneer at his presence. Seeing how everyone acted offended at Spider-Norman was hilarious. It's like some widespread toxic tsundere act.

My ideal Peter would be 80% Ditko and 20% Romita
Regarding the rest the funniest part is that Ditko wasn't a true objectivist. He even wanted to be a cop at some point because he desired to help others. That's basic and unselfish superhero behavior right there. I doubt that he was against the rights for different groups. He hated dictatorships, to the point that he did a short comic in the 90s criticizing them. I read some of the essays and stories he made two decades ago and from what I could understand he hated political correctness, vandalism in protests, and affirmative action. Should that be controversial? But whatever if his ideology was as cancerous as everyone says it was his run would still be good. Best run.

By the way I can't wrap my mind around the hate Mr. A receives. Everyone bitches about Batman and his no kill rule, and also anyone irl wants pedophiles and terrorists dead, but there's a character that "kills" and turns out he's the worst thing ever.

>>154968046
Anything can be propaganda. 60s Marvel was propaganda, and they had good comics. If you think that propaganda means something that just wants to teach a lesson without having quality at all, I'll counter your argument with the fact that Mr. A had kino stories during the following decades. The true offenses where Killjoy and The Avenging World. They had so much potential, ffs.

>Batman
Nobody wants to admit it but mainline Batman hasn't been cool since the humiliation ritual shit they put him through. Absolute is doing the heay lifting for him.
>>
>>154967957
>And his reaction to civil rights protests
The protest in that comic explicitly wasn't a "civil rights protest", the whole outrage over it was the story portraying a group of students protesting over literally nothing and just timewasting and causing trouble instead of studying, for comedic effect in the story, and people reacting angrily like you can't do this, all student protests even in fiction MUST be about civil rights or Vietnam don't you dare mock. Which led to some modern writer retconning the story to be a heckin' real protest about true and valid issues and Peter being a dick to them because he'd been reading Rand, for an obligatory cheap shot at Ditko.
>>
>>154970948
>Nobody wants to admit it but mainline Batman hasn't been cool since the humiliation ritual shit they put him through.
It was sadly only a matter of time before idiots who fell for "Batman is about a rich white man who dresses up as a bat to beat up the poor and mentally ill for fun. Also Robin is a child soldier" actually got to work on the character.
>>
>>154966153
Neophyte? Are the Avengers a Space Marine Chapter?
>>
>>154971218
Neophyte is a term you don't hear as much nowadays but you'll hear it in older media. It means a noobie, a greenhorn, or a novice.
>>154971038
Yeah I think they automatically assumed he was talking about those. I could also see that being the case. Who knows. He just doesn't like his own individual rights of trying to get to work or school on time to be inhibited. And that's more interesting from a character angle and from a philosophical/political angle. People on one side assume the protest outweighs that inconvenience while others have to put up with it. There's differing power everywhere. A union striking in one industry might hold up everyone and cause everyone to force that company to give to the demanda while other unions will get labelled as greedy themselves and get steamrolled. So yeah nuanced stuff came from Ditko's creativeness. Anyway which story are you talking about? Curious as I want to know the dumbass.

Yes. But the fact we are robbed of good writing surrounding those issues still stings. Does it need to be deep political commentary? No because those stories weren't trying to. But they made an attempt and fit the audience which is basically everyone. Spec 2008 managed to include it with the....GLOBULIN GREEN
>>
>>154971218
It's Thor, what do you expect? I also like that in older comics, Thor was one of Spidey's biggest boosters in the Avengers.
>>
>>154971038
People's reaction to it has always been weird to me. Anyone who's been in college knows a bunch of the kids who protest are only in it to get out of class and shit, hopefully cancel a exam or two. That should not be a controversial statement.
>>
>>154971449
>But the fact we are robbed of good writing surrounding those issues still stings.
That would require nuanced, thoughtful writing that is open enough to not disregard and disdain opinions that differ from the writers' own. But this is [UNSOLICITED OPINIONS ON ISRAEL] Marvel

Not without a complete turnover, which ASM has been screaming for decades needing.
Literal decades, it's the same hands at the till everytime with only Spencer as the exception that proves the rule considering how it ended.
Their mandate is out of step and was always a complete misunderstanding of the character and his appeal, but they are determined to be dragged kicking and screaming to where the rest of the IP has been for all this time.
Peter just isn't as interesting a character frozen and abused in this state. There's little for a young guy to relate to, considering he's being written as a rule by Gen X and Boomers idea of a guy in his twenties.

Because Lowe doesn't know when to crack the whip or urge restraint on anything except long term relationships, Peters life has blown up not once but twice at the start of both runs. And his life still really hasn't recovered from Wells, christ knows the ongoings reputation hasn't.

>>
>>154973595
Over the arc of history? Of course. Personally I'd love for someone to just take MJ out of time and bring her old 'Stan Lee writes the youth slang' without explanation or apology.
Right now? Absolutely not. Same cast. Same crew. Same sauce. We are looking at a generational changeover needed, only the passage of time sadly will save us from the Brevoort doctrine and its true believers.
>>
>>154973630
DeMatteis doesn't give a shit about OMD and writes them as if they are and have always been married and I love him for it.
We have a nice short character study in MJ's perspective skills, being able to identify Chameleon with this issue as the aftermath, but also her determination and courage. MJ is staying knowing the risks.

In short, all the traits that BND have written out of her. She can't tell when Otto is in Peters body despite multiple dates, she can't stick with Peter out of fear, she can't even remain independent from the last man on earth she would date, even when he is the last man.

Ah yes, because he spent all of his run on needlessly complex retcons which many disingenuous retards like to pretend is the case. That was only the end which is largely due to Marvel and we know this because of Slott himself, the dumb faggot. Perhaps Last Remains and Sinister War went on too long and that may be partly on Spencer. But overall, fixing things doesn't automatically mean it is bad. Look at JMS's run and how he fixes MJ and Peter's relationship and it led to kino moments.

Braindead faggots who only knew OMD/BND Spidey needed the demonstration and this was a good method of showing that something in Peter had occurred to warrant this character change.

And even BEFORE this FAGGOT >>154982460 tries to respond, I shall say that Slott saying Marvel told him no upfront does not mean jack shit. People like that faggot will say, "But that's not really meddling! They let him know immediately!" Oh? Then why did it keep progressing? Why did they let him put Mephisto and Strange in those issues, talk about Peter's soul, and have an ending splash where he says "maybe some other day" while holding a ring? That only means in laymen speak that Spencer was driving the idea into your retarded mongoloid, neanderthal skull that he was foreshadowing a storyline that addressed those ideas. And if you got it, then editorial got it and understood. They published it. They either wanted the subsequent outragebux they think exists or they wanted to gauge interest in the undoing of OMD.
Well, to me, their tacit acceptance of Spencer getting that far is the same as meddling. A story has to naturally build in a direction and Spencer still stubbornly built in that direction and Marvel let it keep going. Lowe is a weak faggot that didn't know what to do when a writer presumably with a spine, stood up to him. Evidence? The nigga made "Hydra was right" in 2016 and didn't go full blown lefty troon or get into constant schizo tirades and spats with fans. He just left and took a break. So yeah, there is no world where Spencer wasn't meddled with.

>>154984890
I like it because the origin was reprinted in a newspaper insert once and that's what got me into the character. This was also before Garfield-Man's movie made the origin stale to everyone. It also has kino black and white presentation that is then paid off with the classic costume coming back, a cool fight, cool voice acting from Uncle Ben, the Symbiote, and Josh Keaton.
The symbiote also being here means it sees the origin firsthand and tries to give the incorrect POV on it which feeds into the same type of objective literature that Ditko was pumping out. It is the evil half of the essay.
It also is effective in the same way In the Chill of the Night was for BATB. The origin itself is a test of the objectivism philosophy. I dunno if Objectivism even quite answers it fully or satisfyingly. Anyway, the ending and combo of it with ASM 258 is kino and combines two obligatory story arc beats into one, making it lean in pacing and heightens the presentation/dramaticism.
It also could have been built upon as a memory for the symbiote to think back on and use as a nagging point it has to answer with becoming the Lethal Protector with Eddie.
>>
>>154985542
If Lowe was a big meddler, then that final arc wouldn't have been as self-contradicting as it was. Those were very last minute changes.

>>154985193
I dunno about that. I think Spider-Man is established enough now that you can move past it. But the message has to be there in some form at some point. But yeah an All-Star Superman type treatment of the origin could also be used if it is absolutely necessary.
>>
>>154985569
As Jim Shooter said, every issue could be someone's first. And it's just poorly constructed to have a series require knowledge of some other universe to make sense.
>>
>>154985563
We're talking about a guy who has let numerous examples of the wrong parts of pages being colored in plainly obviously wrong ways, numerous typos, and getting into petty spats with fans on Twitter.
Lowe is an incompetent because of this. And an incompetent forcing a man who is now apathetic to the work he is doing because get this...he is being forced to create dogshit...could produce the work we were given. Those last minute changes could very well be Spencer deciding to just give up and turn in crap. But...why would someone do that on the most popular title of a well-known publishing company and also turn in subpar work that would go against the run he was being praised for? No. You're delusional. Lowe is THE meddler. And the fact these are last minute changes also support MY ARGUMENT as well as possibly, your own. So yeah get real.
>>
>>154985615
Spencer didn't rewrite it, Gage did.
>>
>>154985608
Some other universe? I mean in the sense that the origin only takes up a couple of words and images while still getting across the same plot beats and emotions.
And only Ditko's origin is the most effective and true to the source origin there is. It's his imagery and the words he let get printed and written under Stan Lee.
So I think if a creator excises it, I don't mind. I don't need to know the entire origin of Gregory House, Sherlock, or Hercule Poirot to get an idea of their personality. It helps to understand WHY they have their personality and quirks. But I think sometimes the story itself can be so good that you don't need that knowledge as long as it can be gleaned from the material and compatible. But...if you want it recapped every single time, I guess it won't hurt. Btw, I'm not that anon who just recently watched it. I just wanted to discuss this.

Yes. That's generally how you know what you're talking about on any given subject: you read it. Half the dumb shit people on this board say is because they maybe skimmed through a few storytime threads 5 years ago. I did the same thing during a discussion about Symboites and realized that not a single fucking person in the thread knew that the Venom Symbiote never actually made Peter act like an asshole when he originally wore it. That specifically came from the 90s cartoon so they could speedrun their way to Venom, and then spread outward from there.

Reading the original comics highlights that the strangest, biggest, greatest success for Spider-Man is how much of the designs were birthed into the world fully formed and have remained mostly unchanged sense.

You're never going go to see the original Batman or Superman designs in a major adaptation again except for intentional aesthetic pieces. But aside from the Webpits, Spider-Man's most common design is basically the same.

And not just him. Green Goblin, Mysterio, the Shocker. So many of Spider-Man's villains get introduced very early on and are just locked in to the modern day. It's fascinating to see.

In that same thread several other writers said that Spencer actually did have permission.

Spencer himself broke his silence on the matter in a podcast interview :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fTRzFOG02c

Spencer had lunch with Quesada and got the go-ahead to finally retcon OMD and set things on a good path
The problem was he pushed it too far with Peter buying a ring to propose to MJ as it goes against the manifesto so he got pushed off the book

You're misunderstanding what he's saying there. He never had permission to "undo" OMD, it's just that there was never a mandate preventing Peter and Mary Jane from being together as an unmarried couple. Slott just treated it like Lucy with the football because he was an asshole. Quesada encouraged him to bring them together as boyfriend and girlfriend, but he wasn't allowed to marry them or "undo" it because in the story Quesada himself wrote to follow up on what exactly happened, the deal itself "never happened."

If you're going to be Venom, I think that's a chance to get in touch with your own "venom." Giving in to a bit of your worst tendencies.
So yeah, Yandere MJ.

>>154996779
It also didn't fucking help that whilst Ewing played the breakup for laughs, it really deserved to be ON PANEL and go into detail. It gets wedged with Dylan shenanigans with Masque and MJ continuing to not address the void that is her life spinning until way too late in the run.
It baffles me how little internal monologue we have from her. For years now since Wells we are always trying to guess at this characters motivation and feelings, because they are unexplainable and illogical.

Ewing utterly whitewashed the whole affair, I get it's because he didn't want to cast shadow over Wells (and I strongly believe Lowe was looking over with White) but that apology in the park was just abysmal.

Also MJ and the Symbiote got over their issues way too early with the Symbiote basically going on its back and offering its belly in penance. There was no drama milked from this rich cow, only a lecture about evil Eddie.

I don't know it's a fun reference to Steve Ditko being an objectivist and writing a comic and Stan Lee trying to go in and change the dialog of spider-man but not being able to change the Peter dialog without getting Ditko to redraw the art so he had to run it as it was.

>>154997380
Here's the thing: I think Millennial humor has some bleed into Gen X as well. Think on how Gen X was generally rebellious and a bunch of slackers anyway. This means they might have a significant population of conservative by today's standards individuals who then experience a version of troll's remorse eventually. I believe that is why there are a bunch Gen X lefties who also peddle millennial humor and why a bunch of them watched adorkable shows all the time.

Also it's the way Ewing has Peter look back upon that with embarrassment that only people like him (Ewing) have. I think actual Peter would admit it was a bit too narrow of a worldview at times but perhaps that crowd really was in the way and he was just trying to get by with his own life.

This particular comic was on my mind recently when people began going on about politics in comics.

For those who are unaware, despite this page here, very quickly afterwards there will be a serious student protest arc that also shades into race relations at the time. It's all very "60's-70's liberal progressive" by which I mean the story is about the students having a very real, sympathetic problem (they want a building that was intended for student housing to actually become student housing instead of the alumni center the university is planning on) but some of the black students GO TOO FAR WITH THEIR LEGITIMATE GRIEVANCES and need to be reigned in by their more even handed colleagues/parents. And it ends with Dean actually turning out to be on the students side and just couldn't tell them he was getting it turned into student housing. All's well that ends well sort of thing.

Peter himself doesn't really have time anyway. He's got no real beef even with the slactivist students shown in that page, he's just always annoyed when anyone hassles him because he's constantly worrying about something.

He only wanted to fuck MJ because
1. Peter's body wanted to do it.
2. Peter's memories wanted to do it.
3. Wanted to prove himself SUPERIOR to Peter that fumbled her.
And as we know, #3 was vain and not that serious #1/2 were an issue.

>>154997760
I will call Mephisto to forget your post.

>>154997782
Otto is a very fun character during 90% of the run he only fumbles shit on the last 3 or so issues were the Goblin has the plot on his side. I don't think he's a Stu at all, I agree he has some really retarded moments but that's an Otto/Peter common trait.
>>
>>154997839
I know nothing of rivals unfortunately, I'd prefer Spinnerette over VenoMJ unless they are going a very different route and origin for the latter.
Does Rivals have some pub area where you interact with NPC's? I know it has those gooner servers.
>>
>>154997875
He got interrupted in the bedroom, Slott wrote himself an out when he shouldn't have been writing the damn thing to begin with.
>>
What made Spider-man great back in the day is that he's literally a villain backstory, a guy that by all rights should have been a villain, in terms of personality he's also a total cunt with a chip on his shoulder, and even then he's still a hero. Its a quality you don't see in modern spider-man, but by all rights he's a guy that should just be a two-bit villain but in the end he just didn't. Cheap villain backstory about being bullied all his life and wanting revenge against the jocks, personality that constantly seethed behind their backs about what he'd do if he had power, sick aunt he could use to rationalize robbing banks or something, he has all the makings of a street level hoodlum if he got power, but even before he became a full on hero all he did was cheap ship like try to become a wrestler.
Its like you don't need to be a good person to still be a hero.
>>
>>154997875
>only wanted to fuck MJ b/c...
headcanon
It's just a wildly out of place scene that Slott felt like writing because he's a degen and wanted to get as much ragebux as possible. The faggot is a hack.
>90% of the run
When you compare him to Ock before OMD, he's a shallow character that is vain/egocentric in a shallow way. Not the conniving schemer that real Ock was. The mind switch would have never happened because he would have never even stoop as to become his sworn enemy.
>agree he has retarded moments but that's an Otto/Peter trait
That's a Slott/BND cabal/bad writing trait.

I know their design for Peter isn't the greatest but it is within the realm of possibility rather than Jackpot. Plus I'd rather Domino get in.

Extracting Jackpot from the Wells mess is impossible, I'm sorry it's just utterly cooked. NetEase aren't going to choose something everyone knows failed and lost money.
Also her powers never made any sense, you're going into extremely dangerous situations on a thousands strong roulette wheel? It's worse odds than Ben 10. Is it going to be stuck to the same moves for Rivals?

Yeah but CSM ended up going into the shitter quality-wise, Makima was the best antagonist, and the message of that story is what you say it is, but it then leads to the people who say Spider-Man shouldn't be those things to then have to look deeper at what they consume and realize that what she is saying is right in this instance. Or the mememaker just fucked up but I still would say Makima's fervent like of CSM is similar to the MJ and Spider-Man which is the real point.

Tell me about Spectacular Spiderman. Is it as jaw dropping and fantastic as people make it out to be, or is it a Teen Titans 03 situation where a decent cartoon got unjustly cancelled and now its fans who vastly overrate it have to make it everyone else's problem?
>t. my only exposure to Spiderman was the Ultimate Spiderman cartoon where every single youtube video about it was bombarded by raging Spectacular Fans (and also that one PS2 game where you could deliver Pizzas)
>>
>>155010508
Decent cartoon scenario. Anything is overrated if you listen to certain glazers, but absolutely worth a watch. It does the best adaptation of classic MJ we have ever seen, not a high bar but it's nice to see what made her make an impact to the audience in the first place.
>>
>>155010508
I haven't watched the glazers but I am biased in that I was very young when it came out and I had already seen a couple of those TAS dvd collections. Basically it is the most faithful adaptation of the spirit of Ditko Spider-Man. TAS is like that but also has a lot of time spent on other sagas and is too brisk when it comes to pacing. Spec does the Ditko stuff where he is torn between obligations, conflicted about moral decisions, and has villains who are connected in more ways and have a bit more agency. It also has one foot in the "modern" Spider-Man kino. It has the most substantial adaptation of Venom while doing a slightly different riff on the black costume saga that TAS pioneered.
The action and choreography are also much more fluid and is more ambitious due to the simpler artstyle allowing for really wild action. The voice cast is impeccable. The 2nd season is a slight downgrade in terms of stories and some minor decisions. But, it is still worth watching.

And what is the best spider symbol?
My answers:
It's 1994 logo for any Spider-Man story in the present and maybe the 76-87 logo for any in-universe usage like a newspaper or advertisement that shows Spider-Man. Then the 60's logo for any teenage stories. But overall 94 is the best.
Spider symbol is tricky. Probably Larsen/Bagley's 90's symbol.
