Is misogyny the reason Diana isn't as respected as Bruce and Clark?
>>
>>154983186
No, it's 75% of her rogues gallery coming from greek mythology.
>>
>>154983186
There aren't a lot of Wonder Woman books you can point to as a great starting point, she's only in the big 3 because her merch is generic enough to sell as the girl option, and even then that's falling to the wayside as Harley Quinn is more popular.

Absolute Wonder Woman is great, though, honestly that should become the face of the brand now.
>>
>>154983186
Unfortunately it is. People can try and lie to themselves but the industry is still rampant with misogyny. Its cringe as fuck to say that and I hate saying it, but facts are facts.

She's more respected than Arthur.

"Why don't people respect Wonder Woman" is asking a question about the perception of an IP, "why don't people respect Diana" is like she's a real person who is getting disrespected at work, it's a weird way to discuss a comic book character.

While ultimately I thought Wonder Woman: Earth-One was a failure and shit the bed—which is odd because Morrison rarely misses—I did like the idea of making Dr. Psycho good-looking and more three-dimensional as a character. Making him a PUA was retarded, but I kind of like the idea of him being Diana’s villain she has sexual tension with—sort of like this guy hates women but has intrusive thoughts about marrying Wonder Woman, and for Wonder Woman she’s attracted to his mind when he’s not being a raging misogynist and wants to help him overcome that. Something like that anyway.
>>
>>154983659
The attempt to make Maxwell Lord a Wonder Woman villain and its consequences has been a disaster for the Wonder Woman brand. Whenever someone wants to use him in her comic you just know they hate her actual rogues galley.

Her origin and central mythology have been rewritten and reinterpreted a thousand different ways because her very foundation is something no one likes. Her creator was a Freudian psychologist with a BDSM kink and in polyamorous relationship who believed the key to a healthy society was for women and men to submit to and dominate each other. He created Wonder Woman specifically to spread that message. The Amazons were basically created as a bunch of hippies, but later on feminists who grew up with Wonder Woman wanted to reclaim her when she had grown less popular (Black Canary was probably the most popular female DC character at the time), and so she and the Amazons became an explicitly feminist warrior society, becoming even more Greek-inspired. Now she has no real identity beyond being DC's feminist character.
>>
>>154983249
Not to mention, DC editorial would constantly mess up her book just to boost Superman comics with their pointless crossover events. Her book was handled by the Superman editors, treated as an auxiliary title for the Superman IP, and basically used as extra space to prop Superman up.

Her only appeal is sex.

>>
>>154983840
Hippolyta, Wonder Woman's mother, was killed in the 2000s during a poorly conceived Superman crossover event. Wonder Woman herself was forced to kill Maxwell Lord due to yet another misguided Superman crossover. Her comic runs were often disrupted by Superman storylines, as her book was dragged into his crossover events because they shared the same editorial team.
>>
>>154983186
Reality's misogynistic. Women make up half the population of the planet, and they won't pony up to buy Wonder Woman comics or any female led title. It's the same in television and movies - you get all this media made for women and minorities and then they don't show up for it . . . and for some reason it's the white chuddies' fault it doesn't succeed.

Either way, it doesn’t change the fact that her comic was often disrupted to boost the Superman books. Imagine if most of Superman’s defining moments happened because of Batman crossovers, like Pa Kent dying during the Batman event Cataclysm, or Superman marrying Lois as a result of the Batman event No Man’s Land.

She didn't get a cartoon in the 90s to 2000s that dusted off and recodified her rogue's gallery and supporting cast for a new era after comic books had basically collapsed as valid media, so ever since she's been left with nothing to work with.

This is a huge part of why her runs are so aimless now and why her rogue's gallery is just left over greek rehashes, evil wonder women who flop, and Circe and Cheetah [IE the two main wonder woman villains who showed up in the cartoons].

>>
BDSM.

Feminism.

Hypocrisy.

Female Superman/Captain Marvel.

Boring ass rogues gallery with a boring ass supporting cast that leads to no good stories and consistently low comic book sales/merch.

This is very important to get a movie/game/animated series up and running. This is a boys club because they are the main ones getting all this stuff.
Action figures and heroism are for boys. Romance, drama and dolls are for girls.

Multiple retcons because writers don't actually like her and have good reason not to.
Her movie being successful was not because of the main character. Trust me. Hype was the reason. And the second movie completely taints the first one anyway.

The very few animated movies she has both flopped.
Game that was canceled was going to be just as bad or worse than SS.

Her not being treated like Bruce and Clark because she's a woman is debatable because Barbie/Disney princesses and Sailor Moon make billions like these two men.

Girls do not care about Wonder Woman because she's masculine and goes into battle, beats up men, etc. And there's very little romance. When there is it's with a nothing, waste of space character.
Batman is her greatest love interest and vice versa. The knight and princess is a classic thing for a reason. These two just have way more merit for a relationship than being with anyone else and I'd say it's just as good or better than Clark/Lois.
Boys don't like her because she's a walking, talking don't need no man, can do it all by myself.

Strong independent woman.
Girlboss.

Men bad, women good. Even though Amazons wouldn't exist without Zeus...a man.

Now who would want to sit through an animated series/movie/game and watch/listen to all this bullshit? Exactly.

Future game/animated series is DOA because of this.
Barbie works because she's girly.

Sailor Moon works because she's girly and there's romance. Same thing with Disney princesses.
If she doesn't take off with boys and girls then who hell is she for as a character?
>>
>>154984171
Cartoons have been a moribund medium ever since ipads displaced toys as the main way for parents to shut kids up. Cartoons were always glorified toy commercials, so without toys to sell nobody knows what to do with animated media or what demographics to target with it.

It’s unfortunate that Wonder Woman has to be “iconic” to people at the expense of what she originally was, which was far more interesting. Of course, the attempts to bring back that aspect of her have been failures because they attempt to appease modern feminists, who aren’t very interesting.

Wonder Woman has the perfect hypothetical rogues gallery, they just were never written exceptionally well. Like the only "iconic" moment from one of them is Ares realizing he should prefer continuous wars over nuclear holocaust, which is pretty basic and something pre-Crisis Ares already knew.

>>
It’s cartoons. As a kid, I grew up watching Batman, supermen, Spider-Man, x-men, teen titans, and justice league. These are the heroes I like because these are the heroes I know. Wonder Woman existed in the JL cartoon, but because it’s an ensemble cast, it didn’t explore her character and world to the extent that Batman’s and superman’s shows did. The key to becoming popular is popularity through animations, films, and games. The general population does not read comics because comics are gay. It’s that simple.

Nightwing has a better rogues gallery than Wonder Woman and he sells more. She just isn't an interesting character. It is why the Absolute version turned her into a super magic character with a giant sword and stuff to make her less like her mainline version as possible to try and sell her better.
>>

>Wonder Woman
>Wonder Boy?
80 years later and Wonder Woman still does nothing to appeal to the little boys who's the main demographic to comics.
>>
>>154983186
No, it's because Wonder Woman didn't get a cartoon in the 90s like Batman and Superman or multiple film and TV adaptations when the time was best to do so.

On top of that, there's no one at DC preventing newer writers from dismissing whatever the latest writer has established in favor of their own thing and with the exception of Absolute Wonder Woman, every modern Wondy writer is afraid to have their stories pull from the Golden Age or the adventure fiction that inspired the character.
>>
>>154983186
>>154983249
Nothing unfortunate about it. Its both natural and normal that male-dominated fields don't give a shit about women other than as sex appeal. That's never not going to be the case for superheroes, military shows, anything based around trains, planes or automobiles, navy dramas, post-apocalyptic stuff or any of the other fields of fiction media that women simply do not patronize beyond the surface level. Women are not men, they're never going to give a shit about men stuff. Men do not like women, they're never going to give a shit about women in men stuff. They do like fantasizing about women as sex objects however, so if the women in your male-oriented media are there as sex objects, it will sell better. Simple as. They were always barking up the wrong tree with it.
>>

>>
>>154984458

>>
>>154983186
It's actually the opposite.
If you tell a shitty Batman or Superman story, it's a shitty story.
If you tell a shitty Wonder Woman story, that's misogyny, that's r/menwritingwomen and a hashtag and an audience that will never let you live it down. Wonder Woman has to be flawless because she's *the* woman and her stories represent an entire sex and an entire ideology in a way that Superman and Batman don't have to worry about. That is a massive creative burden.
And this results in a character that has way more writers that go
>I'll just throw out everything that came before me since everyone seems to have hated it
or worse, writers that walk on eggshells and are afraid to do anything cool with her.
Which ends up with her not getting to have iconic one shots or arcs like the other two, which means she can't have an adaptation of a story like Knightfall or Red Son because she never got one in the first place, which means an even smaller audience over time that just gets more insular and crazy in their demands and defense of her.

Marston is underrated People overlook his writing to focus on the fetish stuff. His adventures were fantastic and his dialogues were the best Wonder Woman and her cast ever sounded. It's not often that the original iteration of a Golden Age character is the best characterization but it's true for Wonder Woman.

It also had overaching plots that would pop up in other stories. There was a Saturn invasion plot where she brokered a peace treaty between Earth and Saturn and later rogue Saturnians tried to sabotage that lasted 2 years with other stories mentioning it and having links to it. Also stuff happening in Atlantis that continued previous stories with offscreen events in between. Not common in those days.

The problem is there aren't really high profile writers that have a passion for the character the same way Frank Miller had for Batman or Morrison for Superman.
George Perez became the writer of post crisis WW book basically because he muscled his way and nobody, I mean nobody was interested on writing the book. The original writer that was paired with him, decided to drop before even the first number without a hiccup because he was only hired and didn't care about the character.
And that is something that continues to this day.
>>
>>154992495
they usually give her book to writers who want to climb the ladder to write Superman
but Earth One for instance was Morrison wanting to write her, and he fell on his face
it must be noted that a lot of themes of post-Crisis reboot were already being introduced throughout the 80s under Len Wein as editor, who was credited with the first arc story too. Darker mythology.
>>
>>154992603
>Earth One for instance was Morrison wanting to write her
Morrison writing the character was more about completing a bucket list. There was really not passion for the character. The whole premise of the book was more interested in the thought experiment of building up society used the Marston concepts than a showcase for the character.

She comes from Paradise Island looking for some stolen macguffins, makes friends with a nice family, we get some vaguely educational history and mythology tossed in between monster fights. That's good for a couple seasons.

It felt more like a satire of Marston than anything, whether that was the intention or not doesn’t really matter. That and the book felt culturally dated, almost like it was trying to use the energy of Tumblr in 2013 instead of the then current year culture.

The book was released in 2016 even before the election. Also DC had it shelved for a while until they decided to go forward for it. 2013 tracks with the year that was conceptualized.

It HAS to be Ares, he’s not a woman hater, he just believes that woman shouldn’t have equal rights, and shouldn’t be trained to be warriors and fight, it’s a good dynamic to have with a woman who was made out of clay from the spirit of a woman who died from male violence, not to mention his outfit in Perez run is pure aura and he was in her first movie, he’s cool as fuck and can be a believable justice league threat when needed

I always disliked how Marston made Ares an enemy of the Amazons from the start, considering he was the father of the mythological Hippolyta. I think it would be cooler if the Amazons were originally allied with Ares but rejected him for the ways of Aphrodite.

>>154998850
NTA, but I understand your frustration. Modern social rejects misappropriating mythology to validate their identities and opinions is tragic and sad.

>Is misogyny the reason Diana isn't as respected as Bruce and Clark?

I dunno about Superman, but the majority of Batman's appeal is his rogue's gallery.
>>
Marston created Wonder Woman primarily to appeal to boys, to give them an attractive and confident heroine who they would willingly want to follow. Trying to have her be primarily appealing to women kind of misses the point, she’s ALWAYS going to appeal to a lot of women, but if she’s not appealing to men then you lose the point. I don’t see why she couldn’t be appealing to men today, Marston did it with much more restrictions. I know, she’s iconic and some online people would bitch and you might see a shitty article or two, but it would be successful.

If you knew anything about mythology, you’d know that she has nothing to do with Greek mythology; it’s pure fanfiction by someone who has never read a myth in their life.

>It HAS to be Ares, he’s not a woman hater, he just believes that woman shouldn’t have equal rights, and shouldn’t be trained to be warriors and fight,
Weirdly enough in Greek mythology, Ares is the father and chief deity of the Amazons. He’s not against women fighting, he’s pro-violence in general. He’s the god of War itself. Athena on the other hand is the goddess of strategic warfare and so she’s essentially the god of war for the higher aristocrats, the glory of war and its more “fun” aspects. Also funnily enough Ares and Athena are lovers as well. the divine masculine and the divine feminine and all that.
>>
>>154999654
Actually it’s Ares and Aphrodite who are lovers. Athena is a volcel.
>>

Most mythology shows are mediocre or awful.
>>
>>154999739
shit mean to write Ares and Aphrodite
>>
>>154999992
No worries. But I kind of wish they had incorporated that relationship in the origin of the Amazons, maybe have them be a dual creation of both gods. Ares could give them their strength while Aphrodite gives them boundless love. Maybe even incorporate the idea of the Amazons going mad without their bracelets—a curse from their father that is only calmed by voluntarily loving submission.

DC comics are written for retards, so the only way the heroes get broad mainstream appeal is from other media.
And Wonder Woman has had far less than any of her more popular peers.
Which doesn't prevent her from having a ton of comics, the tenured DC crap characters perpetuate forever.
Aquaman has barely had an original idea or storyline beyond "what if we cut his hand off and give him a beard?" in 60 years.

No, it's the capeshit aspect that makes her boring.

Correct. And for that to happen you need to pitch the idea to boys and make it appealing to them—he wasn’t trying to convince women. That’s why Wonder Woman should always appeal to males.

The character was litterally propoganda for girls and little boys and porno or degenerates.
It was to push feminism, bondage, dominatrixes and lgbtqa themes onto children.
Wertham was in fact 100% correct about Marston.

And the only reason anyone cares today is because they still have a boner for linda carter and she's the only female given any real push from DC.
Outside of harley who they utterlly destroyed by having her carry the WW dyke/feminist baton.
