Did he contribute anything positive to the Sonic comics?
>>
>>154994531
He canonized Sally as the biggest slut in the sonic multiverse
>>
>>154994531
Well no but the insanity was pretty entertaining
>>
>>154994531
Some of his characters were cool, just not when he was writing them.
>>
>>154994531
The concepts that BioWare decided to rip for Sonic Chronicles all had massive potential
>>
>>154994531
Helped end Archie Sonic and made Sega care more about quality control for their licensed material.
>>
>>154994531
He gave a lot of stuff for Bollers and Ian to use. His actual work is shit but the characters, locations, and lore he came up with were better when someone else was writing. Although a lot of his work was heavily inspired by Start Trek and Star Wars to the point Archie must've felt a little worried about getting sued.
>>
>>154995657
This, Archie was in some real hot water over ripping off the Death Star and Super Saiyan.
>>
>>154995599

This pretty much.
>>
>>154995776
They were?
>>
>>154996105
No. Sega did that. He's joking.
>>
>>154995599
>Sega care more about quality control
Not true considering the state of their games and that Iizuka had to beg to get more time and money for Frontiers and that still turned out as a pop in mess. Then there's Sonic Superstars.
>>
>>154995599
Aside from the endless love triangles everything bad you could say about Archie also applies to IDW.
>>
>>154996156
>the state of their games
Frontiers was pretty bad in presentation but it's clear the team cared about the gameplay, Shadow Gens and SCR are pretty solid all around so I think you're still mentally stuck in the LW and Forces era mindset. Time to move on.
>>
He gave a template for better writers and artists to handle his characters better. That's about it.
>>
Right now he's saying he intended Shadow to fuck Sally back in the 2000s and that they were meant to be
Is he making this up to be a cunt?
>>
>>154997249
Probably not. He wanted the skunk guy to take Sally's virginity afterall.
>>
>>154997104
No no no. It's time to stop giving Sega a pass for turning in games that look and perform like they're last gen and pale in comparison to their competitors. Shadow Generations is a DLC add on for an old game and SCR is an okay kart racer that Sega has said underperformed. If I had that image of Sonic eating shit from a dog bowl I'd post that right now.
>>
>>154997249
He quit Archie because they wanted him to put Shadow in the future. We don't know the details of what Archie wanted but Penders wasn't having it.
>>
>>154995599
>Sega care more about quality control for their licensed material.
And yet here we are with IDW
>>
>>154997364
>underperformed
Because it's overpriced. Even now it's 90 dollars for the whole thing. If it was a budget option compared to the 80 dollar Mario Kart World, it would've sold a lot better.
>>
>>154994531
he brought Sonic into the real world
>>
>>154997055
>>154997388
Yeah idw is bad but sadly archie was worse
>>
>>154997249
He's making it up for attention. He said several times long ago that he had no interest in writing Shadow beyond what was mandated of him.
>>
>>154997375
>We don't know the details of what Archie wanted but Penders wasn't having it.
We do know the details, the editor wanted a King Shadow story, which Ian ended up writing. That's literally how Ian got the job.
>>
>>154997639
Oh
>>
>>154997573
>Yeah idw is bad but sadly archie was worse
It was also occasionally better
>>
>>154998814
You just like that it had more waifus.
>>
>>154999348
You can't prove that
>>
>>154994551
This.

>>154994872
Which were all concepts he himself ripped off from other comics, so they were good ideas he executed poorly.
>>
>>154997618
This. Him now pretending to like Shadow and lying about his plans to turn him into the ultimate MC rival like he did Knuckles (his words, not mine), is just because Movie 3 and ShadGens did well enough he figured out he could cash in.
And given he becomes bolder the release due to Sega not doing anything, he figured he could take the next step and shamelessly steal stories from other creatives (even those who said no).
>>
The Archie comics sucked. I read them. There were few interesting moments. It was mostly shit though and a real slog to get through. IDW is unironically better, but it had a low bar to get over.
>>
>>154999555
IDW is more consistent, I'll give it that much.
>>
>>154994531
Will the Floating Island Empire fall now that Penders managed to get his biggest suck-up against him?
>>
>>154999570
Yeah, consistently boring!
>>
>>154999536
He's always liked Shadow, he even drew him one time!
>>
>>154999680
You joke (or, at least, I hope you are), but the guy really knows no shame when that Shadow tracing (from Chronicles, nonetheless) was a freaking commission, if memory serves.
>>
Are you 100% sure the Shadow thing is a lie?
>>
>>154999732
What "Shadow thing" exactly do you mean? Him liking Shadow as a character? Sally fucking Shadow and marrying him? Others?
>>
>>154999748
All of those things
>>
>>154999732
Just don't believe Penders.
>>
>>154999631
Think of how you would feel if you were a writer for IDW and saw a comment like that. Do better.
>>
>>154999732
Shadow did marry Sally in the comic so it’s not complete bullshit.
>>
>>154999787
>next issue: whisper reads mean comments on the internet and cries about it
>it's such a big deal that everyone tries to find the online troll
>it's a three issue story
>the culprit is cubot and he apologizes to whisper after realizing he hurt her feelings
>>
>>154999760
With Penders, you never really know. Him liking Shadow and trying to raise him as a character despite Sega getting in the way is for sure a lie because for quite a while, way before he even released his first bootleg, he always talked about how much he despised working with Shadow, how imposed he was by Sega, and apparently, it is on record that he resented him for taking Knuckles' position as Sonic's rival.

Despite that, him wanting to marry Sally to Shadow could be possible given there is evidence of him hating Sally, so maybe for him, at the time, her getting together with Shadow was a fitting punishment.

>Yeah idw is bad but sadly archie was worse
Idw has 10 years of life and still did nothing with it, nothing happens and whenever it does nobody cares because the stakes are not high enough and it doesn't affect anything, or readers just have no attachment to that.

It's almost like people like you who say that never read it, they import a lot of shit from archie like the bombing of knot-hole being the airship crushing over the restoration, with the difference knot-hole and freedom HQ was more central in archie's story so any reader watching it burn would at least feel something, unlike lesbian HQ. It's really pathetic watching writers (all archiefags btw) sucking off penders megaslop while hating on him, and then import ideas from archie to re-adapt.

Worst of all the sonic fanbase whose only excuse is muh OOC and muh canonicity when only autists care (and idw got a bunch of unhinged takes over sonic because god forbid sega has a real vision in characterization instead of letting westerners write capeshit), or even outright acting malignant and only bring up the soap operas side of archie only because they hate sally, while spending all day writing soap operas in gay fanfics.

Overall this franchise got what it deserves, the movies being better despite tiktok laser fart dancing is divine justice.
>>
>>154994531
>Did he contribute anything positive to the Sonic comics?
That killer mustache, for one.
>>
>>154999810
>he gets forgiven then goes on a hero arc
>>
>>154999813
Do you have any sources of Penders saying this or is it just something you've heard others say? Because I don't think he ever actually spoke about Shadow back then.
>>
>>155001173
nta, the shadow files he recently released explicitly states that his intention in the 2000s was to have sally move on from sonic to shadow as a permanent love interest.
>>
>>154999732
He had Sally defend Shadow from Sonic the moment she met him.

Him making Hope a clone of Maria fits with that one time where Colin claimed Hope was his stepdaughter, she was not his actually kid originally.

The King Shadow was said by Ian to be a suggestion by the editor. Penders claims it was based off his scripts where Shadow and Sally get married as king and queen and showed those scripts in his Shadow files. It's entirely possible the editor based the pitch on those scripts.

So it is likely true.
>>
>>155001177
No, I meant the whole thing about Penders stating he despised Shadow and resented him. I know Penders says to this day that it was just hard to get information from Sega when working on the comic which was frustrating.
>>
>>155001203
Sounds kind of cool but probably would have been weird
>>
>>154995599
This is a bad thing. Sega's "quality control" hasn't improved the quality in any way. The comics are still shit and the games are just as awful as ever, it's just made the whole brand extremely childish and bland.
>>

Idk I think the funniest thing in all of this was that Ian probably saw Shadally was canon in one of the future timelines and so he had to brutally course-correct by making Shadow irredeemably evil all of a sudden because it went against his hecking Sonally
>>
>>154994531

Indirectly.
>>
>>155001768
That's basically the same character sabotage he's been doing to Amy for the last 5 years
>>
>>155001768
Now he can't write any relationships for Sonic lol.
>>
>>155001768

how could it be “canon” if it didn’t exist yet
>>
>>155001952
That's just because he's mad that SEGA wouldn't let him make Sonamy canon in the games.
>>
>>154995657
Also Superman.
>>
Realistically who does Sally go for if she gets trapped in a world where Sonic can't have character development and is permanently an immature adventure seeker? Knuckles
Shadow is an option I guess but something tells me he's just as loveless as Sonic if not worse
>>
>>154994531
No one ever contributed anything positive to Sonic comics.
>>
>>155001223
>is it just something you've heard others say?
To be honest, anon, I don't remember. It might be the case of the greentext, and somebody else made assumptions that do seem plausible when it comes to him.
If that's the case, I have no issues making a retraction of my early post.
>>
He was proof that no matter how awful the Sonic franchise succeeds on being, its legion or loyal autistic fans will never abandon it.
>>
>>155002156
This is a good thing
>>
>>155001768
He's talked about how that arc happened for years. Bullet point #1 was "Sonic fights Evil King Shadow."

Why do you morons just make random shit up?
>>
>>154994531
His era was so mediocre and toxic that in forced Archie to impose some minimal levels of quality for the remainder of the Archie Sonic era.

Stop screaming and having an autistic meltdown, I said "minimal". Archie ended up losing the Sonic franchise for a reason, I know.
>>
>>154994748

It is funny how much of what he does is born out of pure petiness.
>>

And he's still trying to peddle his crappy Freedom Figthers comic that he already knows he can't use, but still tries and tries.

The worst part of this is that the similarities between the Dark Legion and the Nocturnus Clan are so superficial. Sure, the former might have inspired the latter, but the execution is so different, you just need to change their species into something else, say, space lizards, and done. He would have never thought of them as being inspired by his work.

Same applies to Shade, but worse. Make her a male echidna and that's it. Even with the same story role (bad guy group turncoat) and species, the only thing they truly have in common is their damn gender.
>>
>>154994531
Enerjak was probably the best super form Knuckles will ever get, he didn’t do that in particular, but he made Enerjak.
>>
Penders' art is the most amateurish looking artwork I've ever seen in a professional comic book.

And I was alive through the entire '90s.

Never been a fan of Enerjak, don't even like the name. I do think the design can be cool... so I find it hard to believe Penders is the one who came up with it, so please, surprise me.
>>
>>155004302
The worst part is that apparently his Star Trek work doesn't look half-bad. As some people discuss, it would seem Penders is one of the few authors whose style de-evolves with time.
>>
>>155004192
>Other artists can learn, evolve and improve but he got forever stuck on his crappy mid 90's style
Nah, like CWC, his already jarring artstyle in the Sonic comics somehow devolved further after he got das boot from Archie, which eventually gave us Shattered Orro™. No, no one post that aberration.

This was said years and years ago, around the bioware fiasco. It could have been on his first forum (now dead) his other forum (also dead), or a twitter post (probably deleted), or in an interview.

>>155001768
That's not what's going on. Why do people go for the tinfoil hat theory while extrapolating on nothing.

Editor mandated a King Shadow story and it had to tie into Mobius 25 years later, which ended on a cliffhanger of Sonic trying to restore the timestream/timeline. This was always pitched as an alternate reality story and Penders was the only one who believed it was always the canon future.
>>
>>155001768
>>155001952
Now that I think of it, the way he turned Fiona evil is very reminiscent of how seething shippers write canon love interests as the cheating evil whore to make way for their ship. Not that I don’t like the direction he took Fiona, it was for the best, but her prior characterization had her come to terms with being left behind by Sonic. King Shadow feels the same kek

I love how they give us this glimmer of hope where they're finally going to destroy the Restoration, then it just turns out to barely change anything since it's a global initiative. It's like at the end of Xenogears disc 1 where they destroy Solaris in orbit, only to get ganked repeatedly by the country in disc 2 because it has way more facilities on the planet to the point they can even build their own continent.

He doesn't even like sonally, iirc he only put them together again so it would be more dramatic when he splits them up later which he got to do in nu252 but without any narrative weight behind it.

That's understandable though because while it works as a one off and as a wish fulfillment scenario for a kid reading it, it's not something that has legs in an ongoing comic for kids.

>>155007726
Can't blame him. Think of what it would be like to have to interact with people who like the same things you do, they're insufferable. Like, you wouldn't catch me dead in a thread about Sonic shit since I hate Sonic fans.

i never realized "post reboot" Sonic was supposed to be the same as the video games

He's not. It's still a different universe from game sonic because it still has some satam/aosth elements.
>>
>>155007811
And many of its problems got addressed directly by Ian, that was just one of them. People forget how brutally he cleaned house before easing the setting into what he needed the status quo to be.
>>
>>155007819
It's just *like* the games, that's all. It was really the best compromise between Archie and games Sonic imo. The storytelling had less teeth than preboot but the world was the best official amalgamation of concepts from all over the franchise.

>>155008185
4chan isn't a hivemind.
Barby and Tails stopped being a thing not because it was a problem (it wasn't) but because Ian had a raging hate boner against it. He expressed multiple times that he fucking hated it, that's the only reason why it got nuked from the comic. That was a decision made in bad faith and not because it was a part of cleaning up the previous writer's bullshit.
Fiona wasn't just rushed Ian actively made the character worse.
>>
>>155008386
Opinions are not "bad faith."
>>
>>155008449
He did it out of pettiness and not because he thought it'd benefit the comic. That's all you need to know about the guy as a writer.

>>
It's really weird how hated Ian has become even though his work on Archie is still unanimously praised. Even IDW is mostly other writers fumbling the bag whereas Metal Virus is still considered the peak so far.
>>
>>155003856
>Stop screaming and having an autistic meltdown
Only one here doing that is (you), sperg.
>>
>>155008846
It's almost like the quality of his writing then was better than it is now or something. That's like wondering why people have a different opinion on Sonic games after 05 and 06 when everyone used to praise them back in the 90s.
>Metal Virus is still considered the peak so far.
I refuse to believe this, that arc was when things staryed falling off hard and fast.
>>
>>155008846
>It's really weird how hated Ian has become even though his work on Archie is still unanimously praised.
Yeah, because back in the day if you dared say anything bad about Ian's writing when he was still working on Archie you'd get gutted.
Only now that his writing is reaching a broader audience (people who aren't used to Archie) he's being subjected to the backlash people were trying really hard to shield him against. I read Archie twice because I thought I might've been too harsh on it the first time but It only reinforced my initial conclusion that his writing was highly overrated, dude has wayyyy too many flaws and they never go away. He gets a lot of praise for being the dude that isn't Penders when he's almost a diet version of him. IMO the only thing in Archie I enjoyed, and by enjoyed I mean A LOT—was Return to Angel Island and that was written by neither Penders nor Ian kek
>>
>>154994531
Why isn't he blamed harder for destroying archie? Half the lore was nuked by his stupid echidna lawsuit
>>
>>154997573
At this point in time Archie would be around issue 100 given the same time IDW has been out. Archie would have far more highs than IDW and even the lows meet IDW's medicore standard.

Archie is just better due to being able to be bat shit crazy even with the deep swamp of grandpas.
>>
>>155009234
The other writers don't get enough credit, everyone only remembers Penders or Flynn
>>
>>155008846
Ian's writing always depended on his editor (most writers' work does) but there were cracks and dissension as early as the Iron Dominion arc, with the post-Genesis writing being considered a step down (except Champions, but especially including everything from Worlds Unite onward). The main difference between then and IDW is that IDW doesn't have a Sonic Universe, which had extended periods of being considered better than the main comic whenever they had 4-issue self-contained arcs centered around other game characters, allowing everyone to forget about the extended year+-long OCfests guest starring Sonic that the main comic frequently ended up being.
>>
>>155008846
I think it's because no one who liked the games wanted the games to be like Archie. The most popular Sonic games are Sonic 3 and Sa2.
>>
>>155009234
To me, Ian's most annoying trait in Archie was having the villains corner or gain the upper hand over the heroes, but then go "Leave them be and let them wallow in their defeat!" and leave. Ian couldn't just have the good guys just escape their clutches, just have the bad guys gloat and spare them.
>>
>>155009721
Nah the actual real main difference is the writing stopped being a playground for the writer to make cool adventures and started being about...honestly, literally anything but just trying to tell fun stories. I was going to say "trying to fix the setting and characters" but Ian was doing that in Archie too, only now it's less about fixing them to make stories about them and more fixing them for ideological reasons. Sega, who should be the bad guy in any scenario involving creativity for licensed Sonic media, is the only thing forcing IDW to put any ounce of fun or adventure into the comic. Fucking grim.
>>
>>154994531
Unironically yes. As we've seen since his vile betrayal, without the foundation he and Bollers built Ian is hopeless.
>>
>>155010056
It's not exclusive to the bad guys, that's how he writes himself out of actually writing anyone having to work to get away. My favorite is the FFs BTFOing Eggman then telling him to leave with his entire fleet back to his base where he has all his things, leading to TOTALLY UNFORSEEABLE CONSEQUENCES.

Me: *clears my throat and looks at Ian* Ian, you're a flawed writer. You pick and choose what's canon depending on your personal preferences, you mischaracterize the cast based on biases from the Satam and Archie days, and you make the characters explain themselves too much.
Ian: *looks downcast and is uncharacteristically quiet*
Me: But...
Ian: *looks up in surprise and tentative hope*
Me: I just, I REALLY want to have sex with Whisper the Wolf.
Judge: *the jury and audience explode into hushed whispers* Order. Order!
Judge: *lets out a deep sigh* Young man...you're right. We can't sentence a man to death after he helped create such a 10/10 character. The defendant... *he bangs his judge's tarot card against the podium* is cleared of all charges!
Ian: *while the room erupts in cheers* That's... thank you so much. Who are you? How can I ever repay you?
Me: You could start by apologizing.
Ian: Of course! Wait, apologize for wh-
Me: *stabs Ian* THIS IS FOR TELLING EVERYONE THE CAMPING ARC WOULD MATTER!
Ian: *coughing up blood*
Me: *twisting the knife* DIE YOU PIECE OF SHIT!

Literally everything you all hate about it

The fact that he unironically saw himself as the 2nd coming of Jack Kirby negates any good he did.
>>
>>155007773
I always took it as a joke.
>>
>>155008846
I will never understand why the kids decided Metal Virus was good like three years after it ended.
>>
>>155011049
Because they were able to marathon it and mentally skip over the shitty parts (which is like 90% of it) instead of having to suffer through month after month of melodramatic garbage.
>>
>>155011028
Everything was a joke in the first 30 or so issues, after that anything funny was recontextualized as serious business.
>>
>>155011064
That didn't help but it honestly just isn't that good, it has a few nice moments but it's just contrived zombie tropes and wannabe misery porn while also ruining some characters for no reason in the process. The best thing it did was give us the funniest Whisper cryfagging moments.

Ian had plenty of haters back in the day, small child. The period where fandom started getting overprotective of him was ~2014 to 2019. We're currently in the "REEEEEEE IAN FLYYYYYNNN WHY DID YOU FUCK MY WIFE" backlash.

Either way, your scenario falls apart when pretty much everyone, even his biggest dickriders, agree he was better on Archie than IDW. And the (extremely few) people who read his non-Sonic stuff wouldn't consistently say "Wow, this is way better than his Sonic stuff." He's got plenty of flaws in his writing, but his output for Sonic used to be higher quality.
>>
>>155011082
I'd say Angelo and Mike's stuff was always meant to be goofy no matter how far in you got. Mike eventually gave it a little respect, sure, but it was still mostly gags.
>>
>>155011114
Yeah Drogune was also meh but a shill convinced me to try the redo and that was decent at least. Art carried it just like last time though.
>>
>>155006062
So, is he actually the one behind Enerjak? Or like Scourge, it is one of his "well, I made the original character that was turned into [him], so he's mine"
>>
>>155010866
It was never about creator's rights, that was the cover-up to keep public image (which even then didn't work).

>>155011237
Yeah but the point is that at least you'd be able to pretend

>Shill
The internet has rotted your brain. Ian can't afford shills.

I'm not just using it in a derogatory way, it's the most accurate term to describe their behavior. I'm sure there are people who would casually recommend postboot Drogune, I might be one of them, but the person who brought it to my attention could only be called a shill from how defensive and adamant they were about it.
>>
>>155011206
Enerjak is 100% Ken's, through and through. It's just that there's nothing to it beyond the design, which Patrick Spaziante came up with. It's just a "do anything" transformation. He didn't do anything cool under Ken's pen.
>>
>>155011328
Have you considered the average anon, such as you or me, is really obnoxious and what you see as defensive is "Stop being such a bitch"?

What scenario did I make up? I called his Archie writing overrated, where the fuck am I defending the slogfest that is IDW? Also glad we agreed that Ian had a shitload of unreasonable defenders back then. I'm not justifying the people blaming him for every single thing under the sun but pretending that Ian's work was unanimously praised because you weren't able to give your two cents back when it actually mattered is redundant.
>>
>>155011349
I was being less obnoxious at the time so their demeanor was unwarranted even if it's understandable to treat people here that way by default. Regardless, they were a shill even if it was unpaid labor.
>>
>>155011406
>What scenario
This one.
>Only now that his writing is reaching a broader audience (people who aren't used to Archie) he's being subjected to the backlash people were trying really hard to shield him against.

It suggests that people are simply becoming aware rather than his work on Sonic worsening. I already explained why that's not a reasonable argument: new readers wouldn't be coming in and agreeing the old work was better if that was the case. He's not adapted a lot of his pain points with Sonic and the shift in direction and demands from Sega has made those issues even more extreme.

>but pretending that Ian's work was unanimously praised because you weren't able to give your two cents back when it actually mattered is redundant.
I have to assume there's a typo in here somewhere.
Anyway, the period I mentioned was the only point he was really insulated. Before that he had his forums, where he got a good amount of heat. Up until the first Sonic marathon, Ken had very loud fans that despised his ass. Starting with Metal Virus, there was a very loud and acknowledged backlash. It was the Archie reboot and early IDW where the glazing was impenetrable, and it ended up not mattering in Archie's case.

Don't patronize me by trying to relate or bring yourself down to my level. Watch this:

The complaints about IDW must be exaggerated or the writing must be getting better because I'm seeing a lot of love for Belle who used to be one of the most hated characters in the franchise.
>>
>>155011515
The mental gymnastics to reach that conclusion, goddamn. The shit you're quoting is literally about how more people are reading Archie because him working on the games gave his old shit a popularity boost. In no way, shape, or form is that post defending his work on IDW; genuinely no idea what kind of schizophrenic loopholes you're getting your ideas from.
