It mogs All--Star.

Odd that Superwoman is in a story where Jimmy dies. Yeah, it’s imaginary but still, that’s gotta gum up her future.

The story doesn't really hold up well and just seems like a nostalgia wank now. It was pretty shocking to see a story like this in 1986 but it's pretty tame by modern standards (in fact it was pretty tame by 1989).

That’s every Moore story that’s supposedly good. They all hinge on him killing characters or doing some other edgy thing, like having the Joker rape Barbara Gordon and then have midgets make her father run naked on a leash thru a funhouse and look at pictures of the rape. When Killing Joke got made into a movie it was readily apparent the story just wasn’t there. It’s more of a series of events that just happens and Barbara’s rape is there just to add edge to the Joker.

Another high-water mark Moore discussion.
>>
It made an impact the first time I read it because it was so unexpected to see all this horrible shit happening with Curt Swan art. It’s certainly nicer to look at than All-Star. But even at the time it was noticeable that Lex Luthor barely does anything.

The novelty wears off and the constant death and despair just gets tiresome, especially since it doesn’t fully fit with the happy ending. There are good ideas in it about how to end the classic Silver Age Superman era Moore loved, but I doubt he would have written it this way even a few years later, after he got tired of edgy superhero stories.

Moore kinda makes fun of this comic in Supreme. The Jimmy Olsen stand-in is an edgy British comic book writer who brags about killing off the superhero he’s writing’s supporting cast.

That's the point, it's sort of Superman rejecting allowing these awful things to happen. It's a statement that Superman shouldn't exist in such a world, not a tear down of it.

Unfortunatelly, despite the faithful art style, the comic is all "I'M GONNA SAVE THE DAY/DEFEAT YOU!", "yes, but THIS is YOUR weakness", "NOOOO", for like half the time while the second half is the same but with better fights until they finally defeat the guy, imo.
Though I think the follow up comic they attached afterwards where he goes to space is better, I don't remember reading it properly..

Superman commits suicide with the gold kryptonite at the end because he realizes that he is fundamentally incompatible with the dark anti heroes of the 1980s. All that is left is Clark Kent.
>>
>>155006352
>>155006489
I see, but that doesn't make the ending any less tonally weird. There's only like 2 pages between a dead Krypto and a disguised Superman winking at the camera.

https://youtu.be/nL8hVXSDmNM
>>
>>155006535
The whole story is supposed to be feel mean spirited and off putting. Moore is basically saying, "This is what you want? You want a Superman without any of the fun?" He then proceeds to brutally murder the silver age staples of Superman comics.

Curt Swan drawing it is supposed to create a weird cognitive dissonance. In the same way that it would if Dick Sprang drew The Dark Knight Returns.
>>
>>155006604
An attempt to make it feel more modern I suppose. More minimalist, no dialog, less of a background. It's pretty bad tho if you really look closely, like why is Green Lantern using his ring? Making the background characters more detailed also makes them feel more empty, like why is Captain Marvel smiling? The emotion is all gone
>>
>>155006677
Yeah, I don't get that. The comic is so much better. The episode felt pretty flat and left out some of the best parts of the comic.

As others have said the entire comic isn't about what Moore wants for the Superman he knew but a visual representation of what certain creators and readers were intent be the fate for that Superman and all other pre-Crisis work.

If people found it distasteful, congrats, you got the point, yet some have missed we're shown Clark slowly accepting the bleak dilemma of being unable to stop a higher power from breaking everything he knows on a shifting whim unless he breaks the principles he holds to put an end to it.

He gives his resignation letter less to Lois and more to the creators and readers eager for this sort of thing.
But, the wink at the end is Clark and Moore letting the rest who know the score that by nature of the Earth this takes place in this tragedy was only to dupe and appease the morbid curiosity of those like Mxyzptlk to look elsewhere once they're sated for however long. It's not the end.

Superman knew, and you should realize, the Legion showing up to retroactively intervene in what would be a final, futile struggle without their delivered deus ex machina suggests all that seemed lost can always be saved.

I like that he's so pissed, he's yelling so loud that it's hurting Jason's ears. It's such a good little bit of visual storytelling.

>were intent be the fate for that Superman and all other pre-Crisis work.
I don't think the intention was to make Post crisis darker, comics had already been getting darker and darker by then, Moore was just working in that ecosystem than the person responsible for it. It was inevitable that Superman and other comics would get darker, Moore, despite referencing then-recent events like Brainiac's new robotic body, was still working off Silver Age conventions. Toyman had already been a killer for years by then(having killed the other Toyman seen in superfriends), but the story assumes the position that he's never killed before.

I like what *Whatever Happened* stands for. It takes these stories and gives them a sense of closure while still throwing in some Silver Age cynicism *Batman uses a steel chair* lol, that shit is hilarious
>>
>>155006766
Dude, if this were the Silver Age, the characters would be tortured and there’d be some lame boomer jokes. Moore is actually less of a jerk than the writers back then. “Superman tortures Jimmy, that’ll make for a great cover to sell comics.” Who’s the real villain, Moore for killing them off, or the Silver Age writers who tortured the characters for money?

I always found this luke warm at best.

A gradual shift in the tone of stories always happens adjacent the spirit of the times without a sole instigating event, yes.
So it didn't begin only with or after Crisis, sure, but Crisis is still the culmination of then present sensibilities placing the past on the pyre.

There are history documentaries about counter culture elements brewing between the decade divides or a pivotal overthrow moment, so it's natural for art to imitate life.
There's seemingly only room for one way of living in our world so a cultural fight to the death is always to be expected even if the necessity is always questionable in retrospect. The difference with fiction is writers can question if that same approach is necessary at all?
For example, why did the Nu Lobo have to find and kill Old Lobo instead of just leaving well enough alone? Why did plans for 5G necessitate Superman and the old guard becoming failed or authoritarian and having to be removed and replaced? Results inconclusive.

But DC's readership going unaffected by the return of the multiverse strongly suggests even if you find the premise and critique of Moore's essay undue and unfair the QED is still evidently; no.
