I think the main problem with this series was the "destiny" plotline; they gave the villain a truly absurd reason for everything he did, which undermines the value of the entire story.

However, I understand that if they had been given a genuine justification for believing they had to keep the destiny from the books intact, the protagonist would have come across as a selfish villain.
