Thoughts on War Machine?
>>
Not really
>>
>>155007329
He's cool.
>>
>>155007329
I like that he has a lot of guns.
>>
>>155007329
Sad about his armor always being MCU shit instead of cool original designs like the extremis war machine suit.
>>
>>155007905
I actually like how he doesn't have a completely new redesigned armor with each new artist like Iron Man.
>>
>>155007329
Always liked his armor
>>
>>155007329
I liked his "boom! are you looking for this?" joke

always liked him. bitchin color scheme, cool weapons. a fun contrast to Iron Man who has everything built in and concealed, to have external modular weaponry.
Rhodey is also cool. at no point did he ever feel like PUT A BLACK GUY IN. he just felt like yknow, Action Hank. here's a hard-bitin' GI Joe vietnam vet so of course he should wear that armor. The movies really messed up making him look like someone you'd donate money to his country.
>>
He's cool, but I feel like Marvel hasn't really known what to do with him a long while.
>>
Needs more guns on it.
>>
>>155008033
There was a bit where they tried to call attention to the black thing. Like some part in secret wars where he was getting Reed to help him fix it and was all "Bet you're surprised to see a black man." And Reed literally did not care. Like at all.
>>
>>155008080
Thing is he already exists with his own headlined movie, and the movie sucked balls. He just had a different name in the movie.

What I mean by that is that Iron Man does what he does better as a lead character, Tony has to figure out how his suit works and struggles to make new things and deal with being vulnerable with the shards that could reach his heart. When he fails you’re sure he can science himself up and answer and still be the one in the fight shortly after coming out on top, appealing to both sides of the struggle of inventiveness but also physically punching and exploding the bad guy. He’s suave but he has weaknesses and he’s powerful but he has vulnerability.

War Machines problem is obviously he isn’t making the armor, he’s not designing the new power, he’s waiting for someone else to figure out how to make the new laser to beat the new villain. He’s an exsoldier so he doesn’t really have the background to make it believable if he could just make new armor that did better things. His powers are just given to him by other people, mostly governments, so what he brings to the table isn’t very inspiring because it removes the personal step of overcoming the challenge before the next villain is even fought. As a result if hes up against something he can’t defeat with the stuff someone handed him, he kind of has to hope the villain just gives up with an appeal to emotion, and that’s a pretty lame way to end a superhero fight. Sound familiar? It should, and it’s why Falcons movie was doomed to fail before it ever got started.
>>
>>155008128
Reed probably doesn't fucking -notice-
Valeria could bring home a Skrull boyfriend and he'd be like "that's wonderful, honey. Do you know how to apply spin-flavored torque to a sixth-dimensional manifold? Daddy's having trouble"

I imagine Rhodey was just a little intimidated. Here's another super smart tech guy but one he DIDN'T serve with in the war, so he's not sure where he stands. Plus he's the 50s-dad-est guy ever born, so, yknow
>>
>>155008272
I mean ... he's a sidekick. you don't expect Jan, Jace, and Blip to be working on new functions for the power bands

>>155007329
He fumbled the solo push bigly. Which is kind of a shame, because he totally had all the tools to be a solo act. But a mix of poor timing and weak creative let down Jim.
>>
>>155008336
>I mean ... he's a sidekick.
He was the main iron man for a short while and had his own book and several team jobs disconnected from Tony
>>
>>155008708
I'm aware of that. I'm also aware Tony died and was replaced with his alternate universe self who was younger. and that Wolverine had this period where he was a weird noseless creature

Sometimes a character finds his level and you just quietly forget what he was before, y'know?
>>
>>155007329
Cool name and coloring scheme.
He himself is kind of boring.
But a cool costume and name can carry a lame character pretty far.
Look at SpiderGwen.
>>
>>155008272
I would love if he starts designing and requesting his own armor upgrades, but they're all kind of ... simpler than Tony's ideas, and just drawn on notebook paper
>this one has incendiaries. it's called Warm Machine
>This one has two huge tusks for melee combat. Boar Machine.
>Oh and my aquatic dock patrol armor, Wharf Machine
>>
>>155009177
Rhodey, I don't change my name whenever I use another armor, the flamethrower armor doesn't make me Fire'n Man.
>I'm not a child, Tony. It's for internal use. Voice commands. Easy to remember. Now I've been working on one called Snore Machine, is it ethical to use knockout gas alongside tranq darts?
Do you just come up with the name first, and then-
>N-no...
>>
>>155008685
How can he be a solo act anyway, doesn't he need Tony to repair his shit when it breaks down?
>>
whats his best storyline?
>>
>that time marvel briefly lost the rights to license out iron man so in MSHvsSF they just recolored iron man from the last game into war machine and gave him missiles
>>
>>155009481
It's basically military grade war tech.
He's not as advanced as tony's bleeding edge nano-magic bullshit.
It's like the crimson dynamo or titanium man.
>>
>>155010236
THAT was why?
I used to think the best thing to do with crossover fighting games is to rotate representation in and out... I was so surprised when smash bros 2 wasn't like "okay, two DIFFERENT pokemon this time, Wario instead of Mario, Ralph instead of Link," etc.

Why doesn't the US government just have a bunch of War Machines flying around then? Those would have come in handy during Civil War.
>>
>>155011042
they do, don't they? doesn't SHIELD have advanced armor for its agents? Not fully full-on war machine exactly, but basic bulletproof cloth, personal propulsion, and a multitude of weaponry?

I've always liked him despite not reading any of his or Iron Man's comics. I think I just like the Iron Man armor in gunmetal gray and with a crapton of guns.

the US does have their own licensed-produced iron man armor, the guardsaman suit
its a stripped down version of the model 4 armor from the 70s, and it runs on a conventional power source rather than the universal energy-absorbing skin of most 70s/80s iron man armors
their only weapons are the repulsor ray and a nerfed uni-beam, but this is more to do with keeping the guardsman armor as recognizably stark tech due to 1970s marvel design ethos

a re-imagined guardsman suit to fit into a more modern design phase with M1A2 TUSK and other mil-slop would be to grab the base guardsman armor, slap the warmachine shoulder cannon on it, and then add gizmos, whosits, and applique armor all over
>>
>>155011583
Right?
I also like the subtle differences he tends to have. Like, I love the Modular Armor's chin-plate eliminating the need for a mouth, but War Machine's skull-like mask works great, with the little moustachey sides. and while I really prefer Iron Man with 'pants,' WM gets away with the panties quite nicely, due to how his chest armor is shaped. He just looks like a goddamn killing machine.
>>155012561
thank you, anon. you are the reason I have always depended on the nerdness of strangers.
>>
>>155007329
I don't know how to explain it but along with his cast iron color scheme WM keeping to conventional weapons as IM uses energy based tools and has a custom paint job is conceptually the coolest shit.
That sort of same-but-different design philosophy tells me a writer or artist understands the assignment of creativity.

Tangent example is how the MCU made Bucky a super soldier, but his use of his cybernetic arm, firearms and ruthless training helped him differ from how Steve uses similar abilities.
Throw in Black Panther's agile cat dynamic and every scene between the three was just chef's kiss.

In comparison the Black Panther movies and Falcon and the Winter Soldier show completely lost aura, as the kids say, by making everything special effects and clumsy brawling.

it's also something 90s Gundam did a lot of. You'd see more specialized machines and I tell you what, it makes me want to buy toys of them.

I liked the first BP movie, sure as fuck didn't touch the second, but I will say yeah, it was annoying having YET ANOTHER MCU situation where the villain is just 'the hero but bad'
as Professor Farnsworth put it:
>>
>>155013161
because classical comic artists knew how to drew one thing and one thing only: naked people. That's what they studied, day in, day out. it was THE thing to draw, in the same way that 'really anglo bible characters with super pinched, narrow noses and flabby-faced women' were THE thing to paint in renaissance times.
They knew how to drew a few kinds of traditional 20th century clothing, things with sharp, creased lines, all ironed and starch, but that's it. Once your suit and fedora came off, your costume had to be paaaainted on. And machines? They didn't know how to draw fucking machines. Best we could ask for is kind of armor pieces, breastplate etc, going over what is clearly just a metallic zentai

now in the comics, they excused this saying that Tony uses '3d chainmail mesh held in place with EM fields' but... it's just.. have you tried drawing mechanical joints consistently? it's really hard. They didn't have action figures to just reference as they drew. and if you look at the Mark I suit, which DOES have joints, it looks like a shitty Tin Man. They simply didn't know. even Japan didn't know how to draw robots until Star Wars inspired Gundam.

Pretty much i also wanna add that ironman came from an era where robots where just boxes with claw hands and light bulbs for eyes. His design is an attempt of making something easy to draw and super hero like.
As the ironman comic progresses you can see the advancement on art/perception of robots like in picrel. Thats the 90's thing i have ever seen and its such a shame a good design like this is only used for like 2 issues.

But thats exaclty what makes him so interesting, because he's already a soldier he knows how to fight in a battlefield.
For Example in Dennis O'neil run Rhodey was ironman while Tony dealt with his alcoholism. Rhodey inevitably encounters the mandarin, he can't beat him due to his inexperience so he escapes with an inch of his life. So what does he do? Uses his enviroment. The chinese sent his airforce after finding out an american super hero crossed it's borders, Rhodey realizes none of them speak an inch of english he decides to head straight towards mandarin's mountain lair and bait the airforce's missiles while destroy the mountain anti air defences and tears it open.
Also this era is the only time we see ironman wearing a coat.
>>
>>155014228
yeah totally, mecha just sucked for the entire 'serious scifi' era, as well as the accompanying b-movie era. it's only blockbuster-era when robots got good
and it's funny when someone can't draw them. Ben 10 has serviceable art in the first two series which are the ones I watched, but Man of Action -cannot- draw mechanical stuff. you just get humanoids with random lines drawn on them and 'there, that's a mech suit'
even Badgerclops from Mao Mao had a better mecha arm, because they actually drew it bending as if those were proper joints.. sometimes.

but yeah, capecomics mecha, the best you can get usually is a bunch of cables or ribbed lines with heavy blacks to sell that it's metallic.
>>
>>155008272
So heroes who get powers they don't understand are bad becasue they don't understand them and will probably come up against something they can't defeat.

Is that what you're saying?

>>155012561
I always thought the guardsmen were cool and was blown away the first time I saw them show up and help take down and cart off a bad guy in a spiderman comic.
That there was something akin to an elite police force and guards to help take down bad guys
It scratched that world building itch that I had as a kid.

The iron legion was way too much rdj ego stroke for my liking and it kind of nerfed the entire setting.

Idk why people dont bring the mandroids anymore. They're shield's version of the guardsman (literally they where built by tony)
>>
>>155014622
They look terrible. But they are threatning enough if not goofy so I guess they work as throwaway villains.
>>
>>155014622
huh, those are interesting-looking.. i kinda wanna see those fight some Sentinels sometime.
>>
>>155008272
On the other hand, we've had tons of movies where a pilot or driver was the main character and the team that takes care of the vehicle is the supporting cast and those worked just fine, right?

And Steve just had his powers given to him by other people. Spider-Man got his powers by accident. The X-Men were just born with theirs.

The guy inside the War Machine suit is ultimately the one going out there and getting shot and facing mortal peril.
>>
>>155014793
which is one reason I hate telepresence armor.. it makes the wearer completely superfluous, and makes you wonder why it isn't just full of additional robot gear instead of being hollow
