Inarguably the luckiest motherfucker in comic books. He can’t draw at least at a professional level but managed to get work out that just happened to tap into what the main readers of comics (preteen boys) wanted at that exact time that almost immediately fell out of style. He’s only relevant today because out of all the “original” characters he shotgunned out into the industry one (1) managed to catch on thanks to that character being used by actually talented creators. Despite this character’s success having very little to actually do with him he continues to take every ounce of credit for that character’s success. Really he’s today’s Bob Kane.

His art is shit. His writing is shit. He's lucky other people made characters he created popular, otherwise he would have faded into obscurity. Joe Kelly is why Deadpool got famous and was not the path Liefeld wanted for him. Cable being Scott's kid was not want he wanted for Scott and he hated the idea. If not for those two things, those characters would have disappeared into the ether with strife, shatterstar and bedlam.
None of this is a judgment on who Liefeld is. I don't know him personally, I don't pay attention to anything he has to say about anything except comics. He could be the nicest fucking guy on the planet. All that is irrelevant, I find his work absolute dogshit.

Gonna go against the grain and say he's hated for the wrong reasons. There's a reason his style came to define an era, it's dynamic and interesting, even if technically very weak. Yes, his writing is shit. But he shouldn't be hated for his work, he should be hated for being a piece of shit. Read about his dealings with pretty much everyone from Marvel to Image and beyond. He's lucky the other Image guys happen to be jumping ship from Marvel when they did because Marvel was going to fire him for announcing he'd be doing an X-Men ripoff comic for Malibu. He then proceeded to burn bridges with the Image guys by doing things like poaching talent from them to the point that he had to quit Image minutes before the meeting where they were going to expel him. He seems like the kind of guy who smiles to your face while holding a knife behind his back.

I asked Liefeld on instagram if Cable being Cyclops’ kid was his idea and he claimed it was but Liefeld also claimed he originally intended Deadpool to be Weapon 11 to Wolverine’s Weapon 10 (X) but the X in Weapon X being revealed to be a Roman numeral for 10 didn’t happen till way later during Morrison’s run so he’s not against lying.

The Heroes Reborn series was legitimately interesting but I got sick of his Willie Lane-from King of the Hill-like constant repetition of his one accomplishment. I stopped listening with the Cameron Spider-Man episode, that’s the biggest comic movie “what if” I’m interested in and thought maybe since Liefeld claims to be an insider he’d have new info but nope it was 45 minutes of “I created Deadpool you know. Deadpool, that’s all me. I made Deadpool”

Don’t forget cable kek. But that aside, I’m mostly a dc guy and know nothing about marvel. So I find his insight on things really fascinating. Like ghost rider being a literal “speed demon” based off of evil kenievel. And the character’s rise to becoming an a lister. The many writers and artists contributions to the character. His brief run in the fantastic four. He has a wealth of old school knowledge that I really appreciate. I don’t know of any other classic comic creators with the same conversational style show

He's always been a liar. It's like how he clams that Deadpool has nothing to do with Deathstroke despite the fact that not only do they have similar names and costumes but Deadpools actual name, Wade Wilson, being a rift of Slade Wilson, Both had an underage girlfriend, both using a mixture of both guns and swords. Hell aside from powers, the main difference between the two is that Deadpool is a Quippy Spiderman type with an R rating while Slade is mostly serious with maybe some dry wit once in a blue moon.

He can't just be proud of creating Deadpool and Cable, he has to take credit for the work other creators did. He got a big head because he was lucky enough to get in on that brief window in the 90s where guys could make millions of dollars in comics. He's not a Bob Kane level fraud, but he might have one of the higher ego-to-accomplishments ratios today.
