Why are they so bad at making blockbuster hits? What does the MCU have thay they don't?

A twenty year head start?

>>155024661
Time.
>>
>>155024661
All this good movies...
>>
People can only accept Spidey as a proper superhero. It's lame and gay whenever anyone else does it so they get changed into action heroes with tacticool looks. DC's too cape-like to sell so they have a harder time. Aquaman and Wonder Woman were barely superhero films so they got around it. Superman needs to be something like Smallville or MoS to get anywhere and can't function as-is without most of the world thinking he's a lame fuck.
>>
>>155024661
Every DC director wants to subvert the premise while Marvel usually takes the source material and adds quips. The closest to the source is the most recent Superman, and that's off-putting to modern audiences because it's corny, which while matching the source material, didn't also have something for modern audiences to enjoy. At this point, DC's attempt to make their own cinematic universe is so tainted that they probably should stop for 10 years to let audience opinions settle rather than releasing garbage after garbage.
>>
>>155024786
Superman is a hopeCHAD character
This sissy doomie world can't stand a character like him
>>
>>155024744
oh they really don't

DC was going to have a Superman/Batman movie with the Superman from 2006, but he flopped and they cancelled the project (Batman Begins also basically flopped the year before - they spent as much on it as they did on Batman & Robin back in 1997, relative to the money it actually made, but Catwoman had already flopped in 2004 so there was no crossover with either to be had, and Nolan got to make a 'serious' movie - which one of the stars hated so much he killed himself over the rushes, thinking he'd wrecked his career, and thus getting pity reviews that glossed over the film's many flaws)

in 2011 when it was clear Nolan's Batman was coming to an end and he would not do any further cape work, Green Lantern was supposed to be the next big thing (Jonah Hex had died a death in the interim) but Green Lantern sucked so bad they went back for reshoots with a full third of the original budget spent on top of that budget, and... it flopped

Man of Steel was possibly intentionally made to be bad, because DC at that time didn't own the full rights to Superman - if they didn't make movies they'd be sued for loss of earnings, if they did they'd end up paying 50% to the other rightsholders; so ... they found a guy who'd already made a huge budget superhero flop (Watchmen) and gave him Superman to play with ... and it made money, and they got the full rights back in a surprise court decision just months before release, so then they were stuck with the guy who made movies they didn't understand that made money in ways they couldn't fathom and threw everything at him for years and... look how that turned out; a few people tried to save it/usurp him, like Dwayne Johnson right at the end, but it was too late by then

so they hired the disgraced ex-Marvel guy with the twitter history and he did exactly what he's always done which, look at his film history, has not always made good money, especially with faded brands like DC and...
>>
>>155025688
speaking of Batman & Robin, if it hadn't flopped they'd have been releasing a Batgirl movie vs the first X-Men movie, which is very much in the silly tone of those 90s Batman movies and borrows heavily from them (although not so much from Batman & Robin)

instead FOX made X-Men, Sony made Spider-Man, Universal made Hulk and, despite the fact Hulk flopped and FOX's Daredevil/Elektra and Fantastic Four were... very silly films with dance-offs and all kinds of unwatchable garbage in them, they weren't as bad as Catwoman or as boring as Superman Returns and between DC's only big hit of the 2000s and its first big hit of the 2010s, Marvel Studios erupted with 6 movies and an entire complete crossover story while Nolan was agonising over which fight choreographer to go with (he chose poorly) in his very important story about a silly voiced wrestler with a frankly impractical plan to drive a functioning fusion reactor around on a flatbed truck in a ruined city forever until a dead billionaire came back to life to stop him

I guess we'll never know what DC did wrong
>>
you can tell everything with superman, they are rushing into everything. BvS needed a batman film. the superman film needed an actual origin story film
>>
It all comes down to WB making bad decisions
>>
>>155024661
A vision and backbone that Feige has that Snyder and Gunn do not
>>
>>155024661
They've only had two movies yet, relax.
Unless you mean DC in general, in which case they've had plenty of blockbuster films.
There was Superman 1 and 2 from back in the day, a whole host of Batman films, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, hell even BvS and Suicide Squad were successful at the box office despite their poor quality.
>>
The MCU has Disney.

Feige is a shithead but still managed this thing properly up until Endgame at least.

Shit's been garbage after that movie ever since except for Spider-Man of course.

>What does the MCU have thay they don't?
Relatable characters. Look, I'm a DC fan, but let's be fucking real, their characters only appeal to comic book readers. Normies just don't find them relatable at all.
>>
>>155024661
The most obvious thing in the world is that Batman and Superman have never teamed up in a live action movie proper. The easiest fucking layup ever for a trillion dollars and none of the fucking brains in the studios can get it to happen.
>>
>>155024661

DC studios is like a spoiled child that has a lot of toys but doesn't know (neither is interested in) how to play with them properly and breaks them regularly. Marvel Studios is like the poor kid that only has a soldier toy, a bootleg spider-man toy and one Barbie doll from her little sister but make crazy ass lores when playing with them.
>>
>>155028136
The MCU would be exactly like the dead DCEU if Marvel had all the rights of their characters from the beginning.
>>
>>155024661
Marvel had a lot go good will from the audience and always aimed at making the same basic film every time so people knew what they were getting into.
Plus say what you want about the actual films but Marvel did a good job with all their casting.
Like did Marvel every cast anyone as bad as Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman?
>>
>>155024661
Honestly? I don't think anyone in charge actually likes the characters or stories. It's like they're ashamed to let them be themselves. It's why they're always "subverting" everything. They think Superman and Supergirl are uncool so they want to make them cool. They don't need to be cool. It's like Evangelicals trying to make church "cool" to attract young people. Church will never be cool, but it doesn't have to be and shouldn't be. It will attract those who resonate with it if it just stays itself.

Marvel has more daring and complex characters to explore that actually act like people trying to strive and do good usually with the world against them, not just nigh omnipotent beings that fly around being standard Paragons flaunting their god hood and wealth to the common masses they save.

Plus Marvel enjoys allowing their characters to be extensions of the human spirit and reprensenting their instinct to enjoy chaos in a good way. Not law following Gods and puritans that dc is representing heroes(with some exceptions)
>>
>>155029710
The Infinity Gauntlet wasn't exactly an "obvious beloved event" and they went in a very different direction with it anyway.
>>155029871

The infinity gauntlet was the only marvel event I knew at the time, that and civil war and they used both

Ignoring X-specific events, there was Contest of Champions, Secret Wars, Operation: Galactic Storm, Maximum Security, and World War Hulk. Infinity Gauntlet/War/Crusade came and went in the early 90s same as all the other comics that were big with speculators. It was used as the basis for some video games, but no one talked about it as if it were some great story. Thanos showing up in the movies did more to reinvigorate interest in it than anything else.

Zack Snyder turned the brand into a massive joke and rather than doing the smart thing and putting the franchise on the shelf for a decade or so they kept trying to make Snyder's garbage work and then said "fuck it we'll just start from scratch" before the rest of the garbage Snyder put into motion had even hit theaters yet. Despite what the faggots on 4chan will say Gunn's Superman did manage to earn a bit of a goodwill with audiences but that was immediately dashed with how shit Supergirl was.

WB broke their ankle the first stride in the race and rather than wait for that broken ankle to heal they kept running the race and the results were as expected

Because people were excited about the idea of Christopher Nolan, fresh off the Dark Knight Trilogy, basically doing the same thing to Superman. But once the movie came out and word of mouth spread the movie cratered. Batman and Superman meeting in a movie is an event that people had been excited for for goddamn near a century so they were willing to look past Man of Steel and give Batman v Superman a shot but, again, once word of mouth spread, the movie cratered. By the time Justice League came out people were done with being burned and stopped going out. Mix the general poor reception of Batman v Superman with the obnoxious online cult that's surrounded Snyder's DC movies and you've poisoned the brand.
>>
>>155031494
The same thing that happened with Star Wars happened to DC but it wasn't as big a deal since DC's not anywhere near as big a brand as Star Wars. One person fucked it up spectacularly and audiences stopped turning up, even with brand new creatives involved.
>>
>>155031494
You can clearly see the decline in sales with Snyder too and the main problem with him was no planing whatsoever.
>B-but that was Hamada and Gunn's fault, also covid
Hamada planed a reboot after The Flash, the only movie that belongs to him was Batwoman, all the others were in production during Snyder's years.
And Snyder had no power whatsoever, the first time DC is working as his own thing is with Gunn, and you can see how he has changed the slate several times, Because Warner, but also because he went full retard picking shits nobody asked for and making a soft reboot to keep his wife and friends.
Anyhow Paramount will put somebody new in charge of DC next year after Superman 2, most likely Michael Bay.

Marvel lucked out by doing their movies in what was a huge gamble stuck between the franchise and blockbuster era for cinemas. Their characters are really easy too adapt since they feel more close to real life. It wasn't until the aftermath of the Infinity Saga, that people realized how lucky they were.
DC has been with a lot of issues of how to adapt their characters due to their characters core and powers, which has left for different directors to take different choices that have not only left WB scared of what the reception might be, but also in what they should make. Adding that right now, even with studio, WB isn't making the calls for their two studios for TV (Hbo, and Hbo Max) that it's just a nightmare to get the ball rolling. And no, doing Phase 1 all over again isn't going to work for DC too, because audiences already expected that, and thus if you fail one, you fail the rest.

>Zack Snyder turned the brand into a massive joke
The movies were on an upward trend with titles like Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. It was only after WB announced they were heading in a different direction, especially after Walter Hamada took over, that the numbers began to decline steadily.
I find it ironic that nowadays people dismiss the Hamada movies as all being part of the so-called Snyderverse, but back then, the shills and users of this board were enthusiastically praising those films, proclaiming things like “DC is finally stepping in the right direction” and “hope is back.” Remember when Geoff Johns became the public face of DC productions right around that time and kept espousing that narrative? Everybody here was glazing that shit.

Even James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, where Hamada and Toby Emmerich basically gave Gunn everything he wanted, has been completely forgotten. I often see people claiming Wonder Woman is a toxic character after WW84 flopped, but that movie was released at the height of the Covid restrictions. Meanwhile, Gunn's TSS, which came toward the tail end of those measures, performed even worse, yet no one brings it up or says things like "Harley Quinn is toxic" or "Peacemaker is toxic."

The day James Gunn leaves, the shills here will react the same way, claiming it was all part of the Snyderverse or some other ridiculous idea, using arguments like the fact that he didn’t completely reboot everything. All while dick-riding the future regime.
>>
>>155033883
Injustice would just seem like a Boys/Invincible ripoff now. They missed their chance.
>>
>>155034688
the problem is that you think that Snyder was in charge of DC or the direction of the movies or something, he was not, He was just in charge of Superman, and not even that, that's why the studio did what they did with Whedon.

>>155034688
>The movies were on an upward trend with titles like Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. It was only after WB announced they were heading in a different direction, especially after Walter Hamada took over, that the numbers began to decline steadily.

Nobody here cares if Gunn gets fired, this is what Snyderfags need to get thru their head, just because they have a giant boner for Snyder doesn't mean that everyone else has the same giant boner for what Snyderfags would consider the opposition. I'd be happy if they threw out the whole "share universe" bullshit and just give me an unconnected horror Swamp Thing movie or an unconnected hard-R Authority movie.

That's true, he was at best just a producer, with Christopher Nolan and Greg Silverman being the main ones supporting him, while it seemed like everyone else wanted him out. Especially people like Geoff Johns, who thought he’d finally get his big break into Hollywood. Unfortunately, the failure of WW84 and the underwhelming returns from Titans pretty much crushed Johns’ chances.

>>155036400
You can like BvS but it’s objectively a bad movie. The story’s a mess, the acting is wooden at best with zero chemistry between the two characters the entire plot hinges on, it’s way too long and meandering that makes you feel every second of it’s nearly four hour runtime, the colors are ugly as is the CGI so half the movie looks like a dirty, dusty mess. DC make weird decisions, they also don't know how to saturate the market to keep the characters in people's consciousness. Stupid shit like the Bat-Embargo, and similar policies, that state only one version of a character can appear in any media at a time are just idiotic. If you have three pieces of media going at a time, a cartoon for younger kids, a live-action TV show for teens, and a movie for adults and Batman is only allowed to appear in one of those pieces of media, then that is two entire demographics who could be missing out on their first introduction to the character, the thinking was that "children would be confused by different versions of characters appearing at the same time" which just sounds silly with a character like Batman because everyone knows who he is, but it extended to lesser known characters too.
It also fucks up the writing teams' ability to do their jobs, Deadshot was set up as a recurring villain with a planned arc in the Arrow TV series, but they were forced to kill him off because Deadshot was going to appear in the Suicide Squad movie. And because the movie version was played by Will Smith, Rocksteady were forced to retcon the character in their games with a race-swap. Deadshot had been in Arkham City where he was portrayed as white, which is accurate to his comic appearance, then Rocksteady had to introduce Deadshot as black in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League to match the Will Smith version and because that game is supposed to be canon to the Arkham games, they had to add in a retcon that the previously seen Deadshot was actually an impostor that the "real" Deadshot killed before being captured by Amanda Waller.

TL:DR - Corporate upper management at DC/WB constantly fuck themselves over with retarded policies.

>You can like BvS but it’s objectively a bad movie.
You're wrong again. The acting and chemistry were fantastic, the plot was one of the best I've ever seen, and the VFX were top-notch, easily the best I’ve seen in a superhero film to date. I don’t even need to mention the choreography, do I?

Snyder’s daughter an hero’ing had nothing to do with him pulling out of justice league, she dusted herself months before they even started shooting. WB just used it as an excuse so they wouldn’t look incompetent hiring a guy who had two (three if you count watchmen) previous disasters with their big moneymakers make yet another movie and Snyder let them use that as an excuse so getting shitcanned off Justice League wouldn’t totally tank his career. Which he did anyway by being a bitter prick and encouraging the WB harassment for several years.
>>
>>155036251
I think they were trying to pump up the absurdity with all the bulgy closeups to drum up interest in the movie, but it fell flat because no one went to see the movies and later talk about the overuse of the fish eye lens with their friends.

I’m just stating facts, but I know this board is notorious for terrible takes. I still remember when we had daily threads for the HBO Watchmen show, with most anons praising that embarrassment as finally doing a Watchmen adaptation right.
>>
>>155036515
A) if this was the truth they wouldn’t have shitcanned him halfway thru Justice League production and completely torpedoed any chance they had at competing with the MCU
B) do you believe the execs who said that Gunn’s Superman was a success?
>>
>>155036512
A lot of people poked fun at the trailers, especially about Superman being cross-eyed.

That's not the board having a terrible take, that's marketing shills flooding advertising material. That's why no-one talks about that fucking show anymore.
Saying BvS is one of the best comic book movies ever made is a bad take.

Man of Steel seemed like it would be good but then they made Superman kill which turned everyone against the film.

Then they decided to rush their shared universe by doing Batman vs Superman instead of doing a Batman intro film, and they horribly miscast Lex Luthor.

Then they just jumped straight to Justice League and horribly miscast Joker.

Then instead of focusing on the justice league for some reason they decide to focus on the suicide squad and Harley Quinn multiple times in the era of wokeism.

At this point their cinematic universe was hated and any subsequent films would be hit with harsh criticisms. Also they made them with a general lack of colour and charm, like they were trying to make them all Batman.

Then before it ever really got started they made seperate Batman and Joker films, completely unrelated to each other and to the shared universe, so it became clear that they were just flinging shit at a wall with no clear direction.

But mostly I think the Jared Leto joker is what really started the hate.

>Meanwhile, Gunn's TSS, which came toward the tail end of those measures, performed even worse, yet no one brings it up or says things like "Harley Quinn is toxic" or "Peacemaker is toxic."
Gunn’s Suicide Squad might not have moved the needle on anything but the consensus from people who did see it was positive. The general consensus for the Snyder stuff, Wonder Woman 1984, and Flash was negative. People thought they sucked and if WB were to immediately push out more of that so soon the “this sucks” mentality is still going to be there. Like do you think Disney’s going to be putting an Eternals sequel into production anytime soon?

Supernerds made up a large chunk of it's great opening weekend. Word of mouth crippled it, the review embargo finally dropped, and it turns out it was a rather shitty Superman movie.

Critics, and it still bombed horrifically. It couldn't sell VOD/DVDs, nor any merch.

WB kept undermining his releases.
>>
>>155037178
WB couldn’t release a fucking three and a half hour long movie as their big release, if WB had released Batman v Superman “as intended” it would’ve done even worse at the box office, three hours is the absolute maximum general audiences will sit thru a movie and even that’s fucking pushing it. Everything WB cut was superfluous anyway, nothing added to the “ultimate edition” affected the plot in any substantial way that would’ve let it hit a billion.

The DC universe is just too wacky and cartoonish compared to Marvel. It's garish and outlandish with the caped heroes in their silly costumes with their no killing rules.
Marvel is much more grounded. The characters feel more realistic. So it's more conducive to live action adaptations.

It's not that the filmmakers are doing something wrong, they just have worse clay to work with.
DC does just fine in cartoons though. You expect silliness in cartoons.

James Gunn is planning an Aquaman Movie for the DCU.

>What does the MCU have thay they don't?
Comic book IPs that people care about.

Outside of Batman and Superman, DC has absolutely nothing. Nothing. Never has, never will. The sooner WB understands this, the better off they will be. You can't do a full blown cinematic universe with DC, the best you can do are Batman and Superman franchises that cross over with one another. And Flash, Green Lantern, Dildo Boy, Martian Manfucker and whoever else can make cameos in their films.

WB is ran by incestuous racist homosexual millionaires who are 100% cut off from reality.
Every decent movie out of DC in the last 10 years was either made by people with almost no or no oversight by WB or a massive fluke.
