He was already starting to show the crudeness that would mark his current work by the 90's(even the 80's), he was just doing more elaborate compositions and Lynn Varley was helping a lot. All these modern covers don't really have any backgrounds and just have single characters so in a vacuum those flaws are way more apparent.

Miller's post-9/11 art looks like he didn't bother with that, instead producing a half-assed version of his trademark jaggedness.
