It’s clear animators these days have a far more limited pool of influence, they just superficially copy anime and don’t branch out. We never get any cool unique action artstyles anymore.
>>
>>155072002
Okay, BTAS was animated by Japan sometimes. The Maxx doesn't look like any manga/anime that I know of, and that Miraculous spin-off is animated by Japan
>>
>>155072002
Cool, Pantheon is safe!
>>
>>155072002
I said this before and I’ll say it again, but the "anime style" has basically become the new "disney style", in the sense that it’s the style everyone sees as the gold standard and tries to replicate, but they do so in a superficial way, and all the artists doing this shit results in everything looking homogenized and bland. Superficially replicate the Disney style and you get the calarts style (calarts as in the real calarts shit John K complained about, not as in beanmouth), superficially replicate anime and you get diet anime.

I was mostly just saying the Maxx was very visually unique, no way we’d get an action cartoon that looks like that from some millennial artist

It’s funny cause Japanese like the stuff on the left more, the shows on the left all have minor Japanese followings while they don’t like the shit on the right
>>
>>155072002
Then make a style that is more appealing than anime.
And for the record, anime isn't uniform when it comes to designs anyway
>>
If I remember correctly Batman TAS was also animated by numerous Japanese studios including good old Sunrise.
>>
>>155072055
He has a plan and it involves (You)!
>>
>>155072002
Aeon Flux, Gorillaz and Samurai Jack were all influenced by anime according to their creators. Batman was animated by an actual anime studio. The only one of the "then" shows that isn't obviously anime-influenced is The Maxx, which wasn't really an action show anyway.

Sorry, but in the 80's when modern action cartoons were being born, Japan was out there making serialized stories with real stakes and character growth, and America was making "GI Joe shoots lasers at Cobra which all miss and then they retreat and a kid learns a lesson about fire safety and then we repeat the same plot 64 more times. And this is all animated at 1 FPS."

No wonder anime lapped them and now dominates the medium. The west should have tried harder.

So, basically, this diet anime style is more or less as overused and homogenized as that 2010 beanmouth style, right? Many of those 2010's shows and pilots with that beanmouth style were indistinguishable from each other and pigeonholed several up and coming western animators into spamming the same art style for the sake of being cheap.

>>155073910
In defense of 80's action shows like GI Joe, having characters injured or killed during fights like in 80's TV anime (e.g. Dragonball, Macross, Fist of the North Star) would have been cool and raised the stakes a bit higher, but it wouldn't fly on American TV during that time period. Noticed how both GI Joe and Transformers opted for theatrical animated movies to dabble with that sort of stuff (that GI Joe movie had its theater run scrapped after those MLP and TF movies flopped, btw).

>most action shows want celebrities these days too, so that's even less money for the animators and artists.

Case in point: Invincible

That shit’s animated like a Filmation cartoon cause the non-artists behind it care more about getting expensive celebrities to voice every character than animation quality and fans eat that shit up cause modern animation "fans" have been conditioned to think that animation quality isn’t important for a visual medium for some fucking reason.

>>
>>155084961

>>
I saw a post yesterday that had two concerns
1. That the current new generation of western artists for comics and cartoons have a disproportional amount of more reverence to manga and anime and this being focused in their influences and homages in their works
2. That said creator's actually have a shallow understanding and appreciation for Japanese works and as a result they're all homogenous they've all seen and only seen the same things
>>
>>155084970
Netflix has no problem funding cartoons with interesting art styles, look at Edgerunners. The problem is entirely with the western animation industry.
>>
>>155085018

Anon, Edgerunners wasn't funded by Netflix, it was almost entirely funded by CDPR, who were originally going to release it on Youtube for free before Netflix stepped in and offered to license it for streaming.

To add to my second point, character deaths in 80's western animated TV shows may have been quite uncommon and taboo, but I noticed a few rare examples of this or off screen deaths slipped into a few episodes of a specific shows from that time.
>In a few episodes of GoBots, a few off screen deaths on minor characters were mentioned or implied in a few specific episodes (a robot corpse stuck on a spider web in Forced Alliance). A few other episodes had on screen deaths or implied deaths (Battle for GoBotron Part V, Invasion from the 21st Level, Lost on GoBotron).
>In a season two episode of Inspector Gadget, Dr. Claw either mentioned or assumed that his mentor was deceased when devising a plan to recruit a veteran to kill Gadget.
>In the Secret of the Spectral Sister episode of Mister T, Robin and Spike mentioned that their older sister Cathy had died in a plane crash 5 years earlier. In the Mystery of the Ancient Ancestor episode, Skye mentioned that her grandfather was accused for murdering some man in a small town 75 years ago.

In all honesty I kinda expected things to go full circle like this. Remember from the 40's to probably the early-mid 80's, more than half the anime being produced around that period looked largely like "diet cartoons"; some moreso than others. Hell, when I first saw a preview of picrel (Andersen Stories ('68)) as a kid on one of those old "DigiView" DVDs, I thought it was an old western cartoon, only to find out years later it was actually anime!
>>
>>155072002
Another problem with a lot of modern anime-inspired western cartoons is that they all cater towards specifically nerdy girls who watched anime in school and then later got into Tumblr.

They don't cast a variety of nets to a variety of potential audiences, it's all just trying to get a very specific subculture. And that makes it all very same-y
>>
>>155087618
I've been noticing that as well. It reminds me of much of those 2010's and 2020's shows on CN, Nick, and Disney Channel. It's as if the showrunners are so content with targeting a niche audience and doubling down on the same homogenized art styles, they and the network execs and the industry itself are practically killing interest of western TV animation.
>>
>>155087618

I'm not in the market for yet another Superman show reboot, especially when I'm happy with Fleischer Superman and Superman TAS. Plus, I'm more irritated by radical and "reimagined" character designs these days, so this is an automatic hard pass.
>Netflix Castlevania
JFC, a very, very hard pass on both. These shows did more harm to the Castlevania series than Konami itself. Perhaps I judged Captain N's Simon Belmont too harshly.
>Vox Machina
It's way too Tumblr for my taste and I don't like its art style, which sucks because it could have piqued my interest if it weren't for those issues.

Animation quality does matter and people do care, case in point the Greg Gotcha segments in Bullet/Bullet (see picture), which were allow to happen because of Disney money, allowing them to hire the best in the business such as Toshihiko Masuda, Kazuhide Tomonaga, Yoshinobu Michihata, Hisao Yokobori and Dan Haskett (who did the character designs to Greg Gotcha because Disney money) all because Bob Iger told Yoshiteru Tsujino who the head character designer to make to 90s TMS, as Tsujino got laid off from their Telecom division in 1988 due to Akira and Tsujino's original idea for Greg Gotcha was using all humans (which some of those designs were retooled for the main show) and mimicking Super Sentai/Kamin Rider, not 90s TMS which Bob Iger wanted.

As well as this from Hayao Miyazaki himself.

>"Illustration from the late 1800s up through the middle of the 20th century was absolutely amazing. In general, American culture was at its highest skill wise in every aspect of human life in the 1940s. It’s all been downhill since then. You just open an old magazine from the 1930s and ’40s and look at the illustrations in it. There’s nobody alive that could touch the way they could draw back then. In old movies, the cinematography is a thousand times better than anything today. Writing, a thousand times better. You buy any book on color theory today and it’s just complete poppycock. Everybody comes out of school painting pink, purple, and green. The whole damn cartoon industry has pink, purple, and green on their mind."

>"Those are the colors of Cutie Honey. Most cartoons are those colors. They have been for many years. Until Cagliostro made that change. Cagliostro changed it, Toshihiko Masuda perfected it. And then there’s been some shows that have followed Masuda’s lead, like Tiny Toon Adventures which has absolutely beautiful color."

>"If you’re a kid wanting to be a cartoonist today, and you’re looking at The Legend of Korra, you don’t have to aim very high. You can draw Korra when you’re 10 years old. You don’t have to get any better than that to become a professional cartoonist. The standards are extremely low. Same as in illustration. Not very many people can draw who are illustrators today, compared to the early 20th century."

>Yea, I can't think of a single one of these "anime-inspired" shows that feels like it's aimed at a male audience besides maybe Castlevania, and that one feels more like it's aimed at the kind of guys who have a findom fetish.
The problem is that by now men and boys alike know that the western industry has become an anti-male estrogen factory, so once they move on from pre-school shit they instantly jump to shonen anime instead of watching emasculated western cartoons where no violence is allowed aside from crude shows like family guy.
Furthermore, the last time a cartoon IP was a huge success with the male audiences were the late 00's with Ben 10. 15 years ago, after this we only got a few cartoons shows that are looked down upon by their male audience nowadays due to shit writing such as Adventure Time or Regular Show,

Bitch please. You say this as if Warren Ellis wasn't as autistic and shitty as Thomas Astruc. I’d argue beanmouth actually comes from a variety of influences, in Flapjack, the proto-beanmouth show, the shows artstyle is very comparable to something like SpongeBob or Chowder, where the artstyle is cartoony, but in a "surreal"/"unconventional" kind of way, albeit a bit more simplistic than those two examples, and I feel like that shows alumni who went on to make more well-known calarts shows took after some of its stylistic elements.

Pendleton Wards art always looked simplistic and doodley, even before he worked on Flapjack (his boards on that show looked like shit), and he has cited Studio Ghibli films as an inspiration to him while also mentioning how shows like The Simpsons, Dr. Katz, and Home Movies influenced him.

For Alex Hirsch, Gravity Falls originally looked very different in its earliest Bridgette Barrager-drawn concept art, but I feel like Flapjack is what influenced him to go in a more simplistic direction visually, that and the fact that his whole beanmouth style he draws in is very clearly Simpsons-inspired.

If you look at some of J.G. Quintels early concept artwork for Regular Show:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=v_Z4otQLx0E&ra=m
You can see that much like Flapjack, his style was originally very SpongeBob/Chowder-adjacent.

Rebecca Sugars artwork was indeed Ghibli-inspired, but another one of her big influences were Fleischer cartoons.

Some additional early beanmouth shows have more varied influences, Gumballs whole style was heavily inspired by colorful street art, which is a lot more clear in its earlier seasons, and Fish Hooks, yet another early beanmouth show, also had a SpongeBob/Chowder/Flapjack-derived artstyle.

Y'know that reminds of a thought I've been having for a while.
The real reason why cartoons are becoming more like anime isn't necessarily because of millennial nostalgia and autism (though that a part of it) but because they are slowly adopting the production and work flow of the anime industry.
It's why you get these semi anime style shows, not just because it's a popular style, but because it very easy to make. which is why they also look very flat as well
>>
>>155105389
man, how can you not see it? Invisible is mostly animated by asians and is clearly inspired by anime when it comes to its animation

I was saying this before
Western animation should be adopting the same techniques the japanese do. Not every show needs to be this disney renaissance style of animation where everything must be moving and every expression needs to be smooth bullshit.
It's cheaper and its not even unique to japan.
Old cartoons like he-man did this exact thing where you had really detailed characters but animated very sparsely.
The problem today is that they need to stop using the same 3 studios and hire different fucking artists instead of phil bourassa all the time

Same reason why a lot of anime today is the same. No money and no good art direction.

>>155105661
Yeah that's more of the heart of the problem.
Because I'm fine with animation that isn't up to that quality. Hell I love it in most case. As long as it uses it resourcefully and creatively.
Most studio just decide to copy something else (and the same thing at that) instead finding a uniquely western way of animating with those kinds of limitations (and when they do it's just fuckin spongebob again)

western animation students are taught to simplify to the point it becomes a detriment
it's why when they try to mimic anime in these shows they always have blocky hair with no detail, no sense of form in the clothing and shading has no sense of form either
as for anime, the movement to digi paint i guess
even then, anime is still fairly detailed and doesn't suffer from the problems the western faux anime have

>>
>>155106401
>students are taught to simplify
In all fairness, that's common animation knowledge. When you're gonna draw the same subject for hundreds if not thousands of frames, it helps that it's at least easy enough for you to draw from as many angles as your skill allows. Even all those detailed anime cuts usually work out of either basic forms or pretty rough undersketches.
All that said, most modern western animation rarely has any cuts done by the domestic production crew themselves afaik, so...

Pantheon made attempts at high sci fi concepts but landed only extremely shallow and lame takes on those. High sci-fi concepts never got in the way of normie popularity for ST:TNG, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Mr Robot or Black Mirror. Those remembered that it's not enough to just take a high concept - you have to do something cool with it. While Pantheon is very much the Westworld of animated sci fi - high concept, serious tone and massive ambition that makes a good promise that is never delivered on as the show gets consumed by the twin black holes of retarded theme utilization (boiling down to le raysizm in both cases) and bad character drama, leaving only peak pseuds worshiping the shows' corpses as hidden gems. Even ignoring the bad animation quality Invincibles artstyle is just bland, it’s not stylized enough to be that anime-like and instead feels more like "diet realism", it feels like the bare minimum of what an action artstyle should be. Unlike action cartoons of the past like Batman: TAS or Samurai Jack it’s not visually interesting in the slightest. Don’t understand why so many people praised it visuals even during the first season which was before the animation got even worse.
>>
>>155110125
Because its somewhat aesthetially pleasing. Thats what matters for most people in a visual medium. The problem is that many professional dont care about that and seem more interested into making something that conform to some textbook/industry standard (Calart or whatever) ideals instead of what the public actually wants, and cover themselves with elitists rethoric as a deflection mechanism for their failures.

You faggots are missing OPs point that most modern anime-inspired shows take visual influence from only anime and nothing else, artists don’t have stylistic range anymore like they should, stuff like that is how you form cool and unique artstyles, like don’t just study anime, study classic cartoons, classic comics, study what makes those artstyles so appealing and form something interesting out of it.

Maybe watching more than just anime would also improve your storytelling.

I wish they'd take inspiration from visually interesting shows. Soultaker has a fairly mediocre scriot and plot but the direction is so good it makes the whole thing worth watching.

Midwit weebs who think that ugly equals bad art or aesthetically unappealing should neck themselves, Gorillaz, The Maxx, and Aeon Flux are all "ugly" and some of the coolest looking western cartoons there are.

YU-GI-OH ZEXXAL did that trick all the time and it look FUCKING awful.

The movie got an obvious bad edit when one of the characters was supposed to die from a bloody injury, supposedly the same team who did the HnK 86 animated movie did that.

Tons of cartoons in the 90’s like Ren & Stimpy and golden age SpongeBob had more dynamic staging, makes sense since cartoons from that decade actually knew about golden age principles.
>>
>>155121487
nah not really. there are shows that are clearly ripping off rick and morty like Hoops, while rick and morty itself doesn't really look much like anything that came before it

1. It would just be a repeat of what happened in the 80's and 90's. Older series like Flintstones, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Scooby-Doo, Woody Woodpecker, and Dennis the Menace were STILL on the air in some form as newer shows were produced.
2. After what happened with reboots like 2016 PPG, nuAnimaniacs, Velma, nuTiny Toons, nuShe-Ra, and Jellystone, the last thing Flintstones need are modern showrunners ruining it by trying to "fix" it modern sensibilities. Plus, modern Looney Tunes has already been screwed over by Warner Bros' mismanagement.

>>155104299
Animated movies for theaters will likely survive, but it wouldn't surprise me to see TV animated shows either die off like Saturday morning lineups or become near-extinct like 30-minute commercials.

Let me guess.
>Left (barring that one HB show)
>Animator: B-b-but, network execs imposed strict budgets and deadlines on us poor, underpaid, overworked animators. And to be fair, schools stopped teaching us about staging because of "industry demands." #AnimationIsTooHard
>Right
>Animator: Even with our budgets and deadlines, we can still employ to use of golden age principles because they'll make for some good dynamic shots.
Many such cases.

Exactly
>Universal effectively demoted Woody Woodpecker and replaced him with Despicable Me's Minions, but at least he got that live-action movie in 2017 and some new shorts on YouTube in 2018.
>Dennis the Menace's last live-action adaptation was a direct-to-video movie in 2007 and his last animated adaptation was a TV movie in 2002
>The Flintstones has had new shows and movies over the years, but the series' relevancy isn't what it once was. At least Fruity Pebbles and Flintstones Vitamins are still in production.
>The Program Exchange folded in 2016.
>Unironically, TMNT continues to get new comics shows, movies, and toys.
>>
>>155124101
True, but not everything needs barebones staging, either.

Nah in many shows it usually framed as a "Kya you pervert! I hate you fuck context! (bitchslap, punch, idiotic uppercut through the air Rumiko Takahashi gag), gag me with the slop.

It's like they just don't want people to enjoy shit cause Japs have a culture of shame in the worst possible sense, (why do you think they always depict female orgasms as a form of shame and rape, tears and all), I guess they never heard of happy nudity or happy sex.
