What went wrong?

>>155085251
The show isnt monkeys failing at life
>>
>>155085251
The original trailer, for one. Coming fresh out of college and the first thing he decides to do (besides some commission work) being to make his own damn show (with blackjack and hookers), for another. Having no strong premise or identity besides "Eddsworld with less charm," for yet another...
>>
Same issue as monkey wrench, if your show is named after monkey withour having the as main character I will not watch it
>>
>>155085251
not funny, boring art style, boring premise, mediocre voice acting, literally nothing that grabs your interest. kind of feel bad now, they seemed to have genuine ambition for the show, but the concept and execution just aren't there. maybe if they take lessons from this go and develop their craft more, could make something cool in the future, but this wasn't it
>>
>>155085251
No monke
>>
>>155085251
He unironically is too green and stupid to make this work.
>>
>>155085251
>why did this terrible low quality thing fail?
Did you see the preview clips? They were literally anti-comedy, the one with the pizza store is especially bad
>>
Even if the original trailer hadn't been a shit, the thing would not have made waves, OP.
In fact, it only made some money *because* the original presentation was viral for being so stupid. If the trailers were all good the thing sould have made no dollah dollah at all.

The art is ugly, the concept is bland and over done and offers nothing new, the designs look amateur, and the "that's so me! Relatable!" aspect just signals that it's been made by people with very little experience, because it's a show about people with very little experience. I've been the owner of a house for over 8 years because I didn't want to pay rent, so I worked super hard and bought a fuckin house. Not everyone will do this, but everyone with a brain knows that it can be done by people who aren't lazy or retarded, so the premise itself indicates that the characters are lazy and retarded. The "landlord is a bad guy" thing is also moronic. The chimp is providing a service, and it should be paid for it by the people using that service.
If you're gonna make a show about roomates, focus on the human and interpersonal aspects. PicRel, Mission Hill was brilliant.
This pilot isn't great, but it’s a way better story about the same subject as Chimptopia:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7t_tOT8v700
It’s D- but at least it has the voices of Mike "look at meeee" Stoklasa, and a man named Josh who always remembers the hit song "it’s hip to be square".

the premise honestly isn't half bad, it's basically just an adult version of MGPAM which actually sounds like a pretty interesting idea to explore
too bad they chose the wrong decisions for literally everything else about it

It’s a newbie project which gives it charm. It has room to learn and grow unlike pilots that just seek to simulate industry shows.

Before dumping on it you should watch the first Bugs Bunny cartoons, etc, and ask yourself if that seems like a superstar production that can carry whole companies. People need to go back to that “building up the project year by year” mindset. While avoiding formulaic or trendy thinking that prevents learning.
>>
started out as very polarizing but they pussyed out and tried to become broad spectrum but now no one will see it
>>
>>155088085
>It has room to learn and grow
You do that BEFORE you make a whole-ass show though, at least before you make a show you're going to charge money for in some way or another.
>that just seek to simulate industry shows
Funny you say that about a series that looks like Family Guy and Rick and Morty's crack baby...

Not trying to defend Goy but why wasn't this seen as a problem with something like Eddsworld?
>>
>>155088228
Well Bugs Bunny developed from just making Bugs Bunny cartoons, starting out crude with simplistic hunting jokes and ending up advanced and stylish
>>
>>155088299
Standards were lower back then
Now you need full funding or you'll be laughed off the Internet
Even Eddsworld is a large team now with 6-10 animators per episode
>>
>>155088299
Edd had been making things for fun for a couple of years before Eddsworld, and even then, he wasn't charging anyone anything to watch it. Even a crowdfunding campaign didn't come until much later.
>>155088317
>Bugs Bunny developed from just making Bugs Bunny cartoons
Yeah, by people who had still been professional illustrators for a while by that point.
>>
>>155088299
People want tv quality stuff on YouTube now. Not just audiences but creators as well. If Robbie had sense he'd animate Chimptopia shorts himself and post to newgrounds (YouTube is a lost cause)
But no, everyone wants to be Vivziepop
Most of these people would absolutely cave to a network if they got an offer
>>
>>155085251
It'd be easier to ask what went RIGHT. This thing was literally just a bunch of inspirations with nothing to stand on its own.
>"DUDE WHAT IF ED EDD N EDDY BUT THEY HAVE TO PAY RENT?!"
>>
>>155088577
>>155088299
I'm tired of this current "indie wave" of industry/network wannabes
I want actual, homegrown Internet cartoons again made by a small group of friends for fun
These current indie shows feel desperate to reach network standards not just in budget but content, they all feel neutered
>>
I think the problem is that they heard people's complaints but also thought that trying to apply them would get them the money
Animation is hard and expensive but God damn just make some more shorts to get people on your side
>>155088714
I think your pic is the actual worst
People would have actually supported chimptopia's "mean edgy humor" if it was actually mean and edgy
Throw a rape joke or slur in for gods sake
>>
>>155088979
Yeah I used catching up for that reason
>>
>>155085251
More like "Chinpotopia"
>>
>>155085251
The wop who made this didn't go harder on Glitch, just raping that faggot company for the phony that it is and instead doing patty-cake crap
>>
>>155089131
What should he have done differently?
>>
>>155089141
>Glitch gets its money from the Australian Government and major corporations, making it not independent
>hires troon freakshow degenerates like Cooper Smith Goodwin and Disney failchildren like Dana Terrace
That's just the top of the shit iceberg, and requires more research.
>>
>>155089316
What? That's not an answer to the question
>>
>>155089141
NTA but he should made fun of the indie scene itself instead of going after the most recent popular thing. Should have also had a finished product beforehand as well, most attempts at an animated webseries has a Proof of Concept before asking for your money. It's hard to convince people to donate to your show when there's nothing to show and what is available looks like it could be done within the week after your work shift

>>155089316
Well then you'd just sound like a petty mongrel with a personal axe to grind instead of a guy who's trying to convince a potential audience he has something new to bring to the Indie Scene
>>
>>155089408
>Well then you'd just sound like a based and redpilled GigaChad who will see to it that every wamen and troon working there is put down like rats
and it's time that the indie scene be shaken up because it's full of trannies and faggots that need to be reminded of their place, that is underneath the dirt.
>>155089364
As I said, wop should've gone harder on Glitch in the first place, rage helps dividends.

To my understanding, Australia's rules for their government supporting media are similar to Canada's; in that, it needs to be majority Australian in its production. Glitch hires too many yanks, so they don't qualify.
>dark money
That's for political shit. As far as I'm aware, Glitch aren't making political ads in Australia, or anywhere.

It could have worked if theh stuck to it. And it did kind of work anyways. Sure they were punching well above their weight class given how rich glitch is, but people got talking about it. They got the desired boost from controversey, but they wussed out to gay glitch nerds. Old cartoons did this all the time and I for one respected the attempt. We shouldn't all be required to be wholesome chungus friends in animation.
>>
>>155094617
Hate to be autistic about this but Screen Aus only funded the earliest Glitch stuff from Meta Runner up to I wanna say the first episode of Murder Drones. After that they became basically self sufficient after the funny robot show and later the sad clown show basically gave them infinite money supply through merch sales.
>>
>>155097627
>people got talking about it
Not in a good way, which is what you need when you're asking people to spend their money on the promise of a good show. The first impression---hell, maybe the first piece of finished animation the guy ever made---is swinging at something already well-liked (and specific, so the quip "another one of THESE" doesn't really make sense), in a bit that's not even original.
>Old cartoons did this all the time
Like the Tex Avery skit they are aping (heh, "aping") from? That was a swing at Disney, but more so at Disney's overall brand (chipper, squeaky-clean and wholesome) than anything specific.
>We shouldn't all be required to be wholesome chungus friends in animation
You shouldn't also burn your bridges before you even built any.
>>
its fine if you think glitch sucks but why make immflamatory skits right away when youre asking for money
save it for like episode 5 or something
>>
>>155097874
Or you could do like Flashgitz and this has nothing to do with anything, but I literally just realized their channel name is a slant play on "faggots" put it at the end of the first episode for a Patreon ad. >this stuff's for girls, we wanna make stuff for dudes

Because Edd just made his shit for his own enjoyment, he knew what he wanted to make and didn't try and get it crowdfunded to make it possible, he just did it. Also he started Eddsworld when he was still fairly young, it was very much an amateur project but it increased in quality as time went on and he learned.
>>
>>155088028
It sounds like a exact opposite of gym partner which makes it confusing and weird. It's one chimp in a human world and the chimp isn't a main character. I have no idea how any of that spurs on episodic situations.

If you go with the typical rewrite people have been floating by of monkeys pretending to be humans and pay the rent, you can obviously see where comedic scenarios would unfold. You could also make it three humans who escape the hustle and bustle of the city and go into the wilderness, only to have it be an animal version of a city and they still have to pay their rent. You can even have it be some humans who hatch up a scheme to pretend to be three monkeys in a zoo so they can live rent-free and get food everyday.

But what the fuck is the purpose of only making the landlord a monkey who barely exhibits monkey behavior other than he likes bananas? He talks normally, he still wants his rent. Where's the fucking joke?
>>
>>155088714
I agree and I want to add that none of these indie projects pay their fucking artists. I'm so sick of this, "INDIE IS THE FUTURE!" bullshit when it's a bunch of teenagers who ask for volunteers for their high-concept show that they hope to pitch to Netflix someday. This is just an infinitely worse version of the industry.

>But now people have creative control over their stuff!
These people are making NOTHING that couldn't also be on TV and some of them are intentionally stifling their creativity in hopes of "fitting" on a network.
>>
imagine the designs for all the sexy furry ladies we lost out on...
