>MISTER MIRACLE is an adult animated series based on Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Eisner Award-winning comic series, and follows Scott Free, the world’s greatest escape artist, known to the world as Mister Miracle. His perfect life with his warrior wife Big Barda falls apart when their two home worlds – Apokolips and New Genesis – go to war, and Scott’s cruel adoptive father Darkseid appears to have captured the ultimate weapon, the Anti-Life Equation, that will give him total dominance over the universe.

>As the mountains of bodies on both sides grow even higher, only Mister Miracle can stop the slaughter and restore peace. But the terrible power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be at work in his own mind, warping his reality, exposing his long-buried pain, and shattering the fragile happiness he’s found with the woman he loves. The odyssey of Scott Free is a harrowing, hilarious, heart-wrenching journey across the pitfalls of the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of God raised by the devil tries to save his family, his world, and maybe even himself. No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. But can Scott Free pull off the ultimate trick – escaping death itself?

Tom King's problem is that he has a lot of personal baggage and while he can SOMETIMES use that to tell interesting stories, he really just has like...two stories to tell total. Also he's rather famous for multiple cases of massive character assassination (often literal in that he loves to murder off C and D listers).

Also his Riddler version of the Killing Joke is fucking dogshit and goes full 'smart people are wizards' bullshit while proving that he just does not understand Batman on a fundamental level (which honestly should be obvious just from his dogshit Batman run but w/e)

Enough commentors online (and on this board) have credibly speculated that the initial "Chapter 1" presented by James Gunn & Peter Safran was them salvaging a handful of the countless DC projects in development at WB, peppered with a few passion projects.

WB under Hamada had already put money into hiring screenwriters to develop treatments for *anything*: New Gods, Sasha Calle Supergirl, Batman Beyond, Batgirl, Keaton Batman, Wonder Twins, Lanterns anthology series, Metal Men, etc etc. They were throwing shit against the wall after the Snyder verse collapsed

Gunn and Safran were hired to steady the reins AND do it on a tight budget. WB is buried in debt, attempting to be sold, Safran cut his teeth on cheap The Conjuring movies.

King was already transitioning into being "the hollywood comics guy" before Gunn; his mom was a longtime WB exec so he had nepo connections that no other comic writer had; Johns was ousted.

King already cynically makes comics to be "prestige graphic novels that are cinematically adapted" - he's like the opposite of Alan Moore in terms of sincerity.

A "New Gods" project is too expensive and too weird & risky, but a "Mr Miracle" solo story is much cheaper, more streamlined, and hey wouldn't you know it... Tom over here just happens to have a "Mr Miracle graphic novel" thats getting critical acclaim, lets just adapt that!

The Supergirl solo movie becomes King's "WOT"
New Gods become King's "Mr Miracle" as an "adult animated" series
Rumors persist that Edi Gathegi's Mr Terrific spinoff is actually an adaptation of King's "Strange Adventures" (which was already being workshopped around the time of the multi-generation Lanterns show)

>It's just not for kids. There's blood and stuff
do burgers really?
>>
>>155106503
Kids probably shouldn't be watching or reading stuff that goes heavy into self-harm and suicide themes? Is that a hot take?
>>
>>155106485
The online chatter around Gunn is insufferable and I think he's overhated BUT he buys into King's type of bullshit comics

Gunn has been pretty clear about the type of comics he likes: Ostrander's SS, the JLI, the Terrifics, Morrison's Batman and Superman.

If it's not one of his personal faves, he kind of doesn't care. Like you can tell he doesn't have any attachment to the Flash. The only Lantern he seems to care about is Guy because of JLI.

So if it's not one of his favorites, he's okay with them being dramatically deconstructed by King's pretentious wank.

Gunn's mission statement is that the DC projects exist as standalone (that just so happen to work in a shared universe). Lanterns and Clayface could potentially be examples of that working.

That combination of events leads to a lot of King projects getting greenlit bc he writes comics to be movie treatments.

They're not expensive crossover slop. They have the illusion of "HBO prestige". It makes Gunn's job easier
>>
>>155106516
I'm just talking about the idea of show with blood= adults only
>>
>>155106604

>>
>>155106098
Does not care for the characters he is writing if their personalities in anyway jeopardize or would oppose what he wants to have happen in the plot.
Just classic thing a good editor is meant to step in and cane the writers hands against, and out of that comes a compromise where they can get to where they want them but without shotgunning everything that came before.
But y'know modern editors.
>>
>>155106562
>Ostrander's SS, the JLI, the Terrifics, Morrison's Batman and Superman.
If he truly cares about these comics, why he twist the stories to fit his shit?
>>
>>155106372
I mean, they already killed off his show and left it on a cliffhanger. I'm fully convinced Gunn won't get around to making Salvation Run before his universe collapses either.
>>
>>155105474
My question is why they're adapting an elseworlds """deconstruction""" story for the DCU's first introduction to the Fourth World.
>>
>>155106712
what has Gunn done creatively that is a betrayal to those comics?
>>
>>155106753
>Gunn won't get around to making Salvation Run before his universe collapses either.

i dont think gunn ever planned to adapt "Salvation Run" the comic by Bill Willingham; he's said as much on social media.

He just likes the idea of a prison planet for villains. I wouldn't be surprised if its a plot point for "Man of Tomorrow" either Rick Flag or Brainiac sends Supes & Lex and they have to work together to get back. Wouldn't be surprised if Peacemaker, Martian Manhunter make appearances as Salvation prisoners

His Superman was nothing like the Morrison's comics.
His Justice Gang is nothing like JLI, it has more in common with the Authority.
His TSS movie is nothing like the Ostrander comics, and he fucking killed Cap Boomerang. He killed Flag just to introduce his father, that feels more like a self-insert OC.
Once again, for a Morrison fan he fucking destroyed Morrison's Frankenstein in Creature Commandos.

I can't see how he is a fan of these writers or their comics. It feels more like he likes to use obscure characters because he's free to do whatever the fuck he wants with them without facing too much scrutiny from comic fans.
>>
>>155107134
>His Superman was nothing like the Morrison's comics.
>His Justice Gang is nothing like JLI, it has more in common with the Authority.
>His TSS movie is nothing like the Ostrander comics
These are shallow explanations that require more elaboration

> he fucking killed Cap Boomerang. He killed Flag just to introduce his father,
1) I think a big part of it was WB wrapping up their contracts with those actors
2) If the "main" characters never get killed, the Suicide Squad concept loses its stakes
>>
>>155107134
>without facing too much scrutiny from comic fans.
Let's be honest, comic fans are irrelevant. His Superman, the Kent, Jor-El and Supergirl would be irreconcilable without the Superman IP because they are nothing like the actual characters.

>>
>>155107223
>His Superman was nothing like the Morrison's comics.
What does his Superman movie have to do with Morrison’s takes, exactly? The closest it gets to Morrison’s comics is Solaris, who’s relegated to a background visual oddity and dealt with by the Justice Gang, likely killed off by them, much like Terrific did with the Kaiju.

>His Justice Gang is nothing like JLI, it has more in common with the Authority.
Once again, aside from Guy Gardner’s presence and the team being sponsored by Maxwell Lord, what about this feels reminiscent of the JLI-era comics? They come across more like a cynical, pragmatic, and efficient take-no-prisoners group of metahumans, much like the Authority.

>1) I think a big part of it was WB wrapping up their contracts with those actors
That didn’t seem to affect Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, and eventually he brought Joel Kinnaman back for the second season of Peacemaker. I think he just didn't care about the characters dynamic in the Ostrander's book, if he even read it.

>2) If the "main" characters never get killed, the Suicide Squad concept loses its stakes
Right from the start, it was clear who would make it and who wouldn’t. The characters played by lesser-known actors, portrayed as deliberately stupid and goofy, were obviously set up for over-the-top deaths. On the other hand, the big-name stars with characters revamped to seem cool, like Bloodsport, were safe bets to survive. The only real twist was that Peacemaker, one of the intentionally goofy ones, managed to make it out alive in the very end.

Morrison Mister Miracle would be weird to me unless they adapt all of Seven Soldiers or use it to set up Final Crisis (which would be way too soon). And it might just turn into misery porn, albeit not as bad as this is gonna be. I'm also not sure they could sell all the weird Morrison stuff as well as Morrison did. Waving around the New Gods like symbols and totems that way would be a hard sell. "Average moviegoer, remember the intergalactic warlord from Justice League? This random human mobster being pettily cruel IS him." And the New Genesis crew wouldn't even mean anything to the average joe.

I wouldn't want Kirby's Mister Miracle adapted either, overall the character's too niche. Adapt New Gods/Orion or adapt other Morrison 4th world stuff and... have the Justice League fight off Apokalips again.
