At the very least they could've fulfilled their S4/S5 promise and THEN bowed out. But instead, they abruptly put hundreds of people out of work "for the sake of the art" Zach in particular pissed me off in this vid after claiming he learned It's Just A Cartoon™ when the whole reason he ended the show was because he couldn't help but overthink how to meet the alleged "high expectations" of this nonsensical comedy cartoon on adultswim. He doesn't want to grind through half a season of Smiling Friends only for Paramount shitters to barge in and tell him the budget's being cut and they won't pay for any guest animators going forward. And they're going to need a tie-in for Taylor Sheridan's new show on CBS. Even WB forced them to outsource their animation to Korea for the third season. How many times has their story changed?> They were so excited about season 4 and 5 they revealed it themselves with a self made sketch >According to the audio announcement, they were specifically afraid of running out of ideas and wanted the show to end on a good note.>According to interviews they had tons of ideas but the production itself just sucked and was wearing down on them.
>>155106754>They had to learn new animation software without changing the look of the showtoo hard, just make a new show
Source on that interview? Because that implies they would have loved to continue the show with a proper budget that didn't make the production ass.Which kind of spits in the face of all the people who convinced themselves it's actually good it ended because it was one episode away from suddenly sucking.I am much more willing to accept the reason simply being they weren't being paid enough to make the show with burning the candle at both ends.
>>155110303The first and second actually fit together. My guess is they had to spin it like it wasn't something that was [as]'s fault when it first happened, so it would look like they were ending the show on good terms Immediately saying >Yeah, the big guy is too stingy. Is going to burn bridges.

Shortly after the cancellation there was a video made theorizing that this happened due to production concerns and the person even pointed out that the show became outsourced by the end and Z&M having made their own animation studio seemed to be to deal with this sort of situation. It sounds like this is kinda being revealed as the truth now.

>>155113013Some of us just don't like how they pretend "Season 3 felt like a good place to end things," when not even a year prior they were already teasing a 4th and 5th season. Seems less like "ending the show on their own terms" and more like bailing out of nowhere and retroactively calling it The Final Season, all because they* treated this silly cartoon like some auteur vision that required their hands in Every frame of Every episode instead of trusting and relying more on their employees and collaborators in a medium that's KNOWN for being a team effort. Even if SF was working with a much smaller budget, the show was clearly becoming one of the most profitable new animated hits for Adult Swim--and WB Discovery at large--so I'm sure they could've negotiated for a bigger crew or a more lax release schedule of one new season every 2 years again. *I hesitate to say "they" because this had to have been mostly Zach's doing
Season 3 already lost the spark. It's not good.

Maybe I’m looking too deeply, but is it possible Zach is one of those creators that takes comedy too seriously? I remember stories about how Michael Richards was hard to work with on UHF and Seinfeld because he was very anal-retentive and wouldn’t have any fun on set. >>155122308Well, one is a friend's casual internet podcast, whereas the other is an actual TV series on a major network distributing it worldwide. There's a lot more on the line, so even with SF being a silly surrealist cartoon, it still directly affects Zach's reputation moving forward; and the guy doesn't seem the type to be very vulnerable. That would help explain why he's been so protective of a project most showrunners wouldn't be so stressed over and why he was so caught up in trying to avoid entering "zombie territory" a mere twenty-something episodes in.

I won't deny Smiling Friends had all the right ingredients to make it a hit with chronically-online zoomers and millennials simply looking for something to turn their brain off to and make memes and fujo fanart of, but the show clearly was written by two guys without any understanding of the writing basics. Jumbled pacing that could rarely fill up 11 minutes, mixed-media animation taking priority, and shock humor to make up for their lack of proper joke structure that even someone like Seth MacFarlane had a decent grasp on when he started showrunning. The Mr. Landlord twist in "A Allan Adventure" and Glep saving the day in "Silly Samuel" are two RARE cases of narrative payoff. Most other episodes feel like "Yes, and... "-ing, and I know I've seen other anons share the same sentiments as Season 3 was rolling out. The endings to "Mole Man" and "Friend-Bot" made it especially clear that no matter how much they'd love the comparison, Zach & Michael wrote wasn't anywhere near what classic SpongeBob and Simpsons writers were delivering.
