What makes a good cover, truly?
THAT'S MY LOGAN BRUH
>>155109311it can be-emotionally evocative-showing contrast or juxtaposition-action-perspective-comedy-meta-sex appealthere are lists of aesthetic styles, but that's something that's incorporated
>>155109311Not false advertising, so if a character is on the cover, they better be significant to the story.
cool posing
>>155109311Wolverine, apparently.
According to Carmine Infantino
>>155109516>motorcyclesthat's pretty crazy that so many ghost rider 2099 covers did not have a motorcycle

>>155109538
>>155109534>>155109538>>155109543Fuck off retard.
There are a few things and it's really hard to quantify what exactly makes something iconic. But a few things that come to my mind off the cuffGood Art. Seems obvious and over simplistic but it needs to be drawn well.Something about it eye catching and shocking. A character death tease, a new character/costume, a fight we've been waiting for. It's job is to sell the inside story and you want to get people in on it. The cover needs to say this story will rock you. The actual story has to matter. Or at least be very good. This is the big one but as much as we go on about the cover itself, the most iconic covers are always attached to the most iconic stories. Basically a good cover is something that should make you want to read the comic. Which is overly simplistic but it's true.
>>155109543the marc spector moon knight #7 variant cover is pretty rad, and ghost rider is driving a flaming car
>>155109544no, i don't think i will
>>155109311Being iconic and really well done. Also attention grabbing.
>>155109444>false advertisingIt can work depending on certain factors.
>>155109804really smart have your cake and eat it too cover.
>>155109547That about covers it>Good art>Visually striking in some way>Tied to an iconic story or first appearance
>>155110052>That about covers itCHARLOS!
>>155109455... is that all?
>>155109804where would her organs even be located @??
Why are you faggots only posting dated or crap covers?
>>155109311>What makes a cover good? One that makes you want to read what's inside, simple as.
>>155109804>asscheeks akimbo like she's about to take it up the dumperWhat porno was this traced from?
>>155109805The original works because it carries the shock of several notable X-Men being captured or dead. This ripoff is lame because the only Jedi who are shown as being neutralized are fucking Glup Shitto jobber nobodies. The three who actually matter are still at large, which defeats the whole purpose of ripping off the X-Men cover.
>>155109547Story is definitely a notable factor. Absolute Batman's #1 cover isn't really that eye-catching in my opinion - yeah, Batman looks bigger, but other than that, it still looks pretty simple. Despite that, it gets referenced and homaged a lot because Absolute Batman itself is a popular comic
>>155114441Third Eye is great
>>155114441It gets referenced and homaged a lot because it’s the only significant thing to happen to the industry in fucking ages
>>155109484It's true.
>>155109484
>>155109311It's okay.
>>155114441It's funny cause this cover >>155109484 is fairly eye catching, but does anyone know what the story was? Trick question, no you don't because it was one of those disposable "the X-Men are hiding out in Australia pretending to be dead" issues. Parts of that arc are remembered, Jubilee and Gateway show up here, but the actual stories were completely whatever. Some anti-mutant people show up and string up Wolverine while everyone else is out then Psylocke disperses everyone and we're off to the next arc right before we get to the big early 90's reboot. But it is a pretty good, evocative cover, even if the story isn't.
>>155114855You are right, absolute batman is THE COMICBOOK from this decade, for the better or the worse.
>>155113401totally agree.justice league 2011 was a bad book, but it covers became iconic.
Gorillas
There are dozens of covers of Wolverine facing forward with his claws out and that's thatYou see one, you've seen them all It can be good and do a service to sell an issue sure but it's not gonna stick out>>155109311>>155109811>>155117818This reminds me why the "Viltrumite group shot" went viral despite it just being a piece of the back of a collected edition of InvincibleIt's fun when there's enough material to recontextualize the composition with various other characters and objectsAnd yet despite the changes it's still recognizable to the original pic and distinctively that original pic
Gonna be honestI think homage covers are more fun when they're homaging something less people would recognize or hasn't been homaged to the point of saturation
>>155114441I think it gets homaged because the absurdity of it made it iconic.Sometimes covers become good/iconic not only because of what other anons said >>155109547 >>155110052 but because it's an unexpected, silly or just dumb enough that catches your eye. Like the heroes reborn captain america, venom holding spidey's skull or any super jerk cover. Also here's a flash cover.

>>155114441>>155114855>>155117804I like to call these sort of homage variants "convention print bait"
>>155109311 my favorite in recent memory
>>155114441Absolute Batman 1 sort of bugs me. It's not a bad cover or anything but one of the things I've complained about is how all the reference and homage covers were to things much older and this is something new that's being iconic and referenced. But it's almost too new for that so it's obvious it's obvious it's less people paying homage to an iconic story but rather them jumping on a hype wagon and skirting the laws of plagiarism as best they can
>>155119740The transparent white border ruins it.
>>155121096I'm not a fan of the minimalist take either.

>>155109311Good paper stock

>>155122216WATCH OUT FOR SHREDDER
Semi-related(?) but what does a super hero need to be good/stand out these days if they're completely new? Of course good writing/arcs can carry even the simplest power(s) but besides that what council would you give? Or maybe "What not to do?" is a better question.
>>155122263Hard to say. A good hook would help but that won't really get you too far by itself. Honestly, I think it just boils down to patience. It takes a long time to really get a character over. Yeah the big guys hit hard when they landed but they took a while to build out their casts, their villains, their development wasn't overnight. Major companies have this really big problem where any character who isn't Batman or Spider-man huge instantly gets punted hard unless it's some creators pet. Conversely they also need to not blow their load the second they get any amount of traction.
>>155122440An effort in patience and restraint then... planning too. Thanks for the things to think about. Not that I'll be doing anything publicly soon, but if the idea for a hero is going to take shape in my mind and compel me to note things down I'd like to use that time sensibly. As it is I got really excited about the name and almost forgot to check and see there are a few characters with that name already.
>>155122501You need to give the people a reason to care. You can figure a lot out as you go. You'll probably want to make changes as you do anyway.
>>155122599>give the people a reason to careChecked. I've already felt how easy it is to get swept up in why I care or felt like I had a "Eureka!" moment, but setting it up so a potential reader can connect those same dots is another matter. I appreciate the perspective check.
>>155109985Why is Nightcrawler nude on this cover
From the past decada I will choose the uncanny x-force one.
>>155109311Wolverine is so cool.
>>155109311
>>155122599What do you mean by care? I know i'm asking some super vague (i believe that's the right word) but could you list examples for it?
>>155125372These cocksuckers aren't good at comics.
>>155126815Also, terrible cover.
>>155126238>What do you mean by care?Just something to really latch onto. Like take Spider-man for example. AF15 has no real villains. No real fights. It's a story of a down on his luck kid. He has a bit of a chip on his shoulder but loves his aunt in uncle. His power went to his head and he paid the price for it. If the brand of Spider-man never took off AF15 would still be a good story on its lonesome.
>>155109439This one's pretty bad.
>>155113401Because most (not all) modern covers are bland and generic
>>155126815correct>>155127569incorrect
>>155117804This is so forced. There's nothing in that cover to make it "le iconic" or "le memorable". We are truly in the dead era of culture. Everything tries to be le iconic and it just turns out to be cringe.
