Honestly, it’s not that out there of an idea. The Joker has frequently been depicted as being associated with organized crime. it showed up in the Burton movies and the DCAU. In a modern context, giving him some cartel/MS13 inspired look would have made sense. They just fucked up the look and got the single worst and most annoying person to play him.
>>
>>155109351
It makes sense if you imagine their goal was "modernizing" the classic theatrical version of the Joker.
Basically taking his classic version of a gangster in a suit with a clown gimmick and changing it for a more modern interpretation of what a big time crime lord with a penchant for showing off would probably look like.
>>
>>155109993
>>155110036
I'd say the biggest misstep was that the best and freshest version of Joker in everyone's minds was the guy who cared more about watching the world burn than piles of money or blood diamonds in the jungle.
It was a sharp decline in quality to go from this to "Purple Lamborghini Joker featuring Rick Ross" even if the concept of gangster Joker isn't actually that flawed to begin with.

To my understanding a semantic update. The original joker was fashioned after the fly gangsters of his time and so they fashioned the new joker after the fly gangsters of our time.
>>
honka
>>
I get it on an experimental level.
The crazy part to me is how they went all in on it. This version had so much fucking plastic crap modeled after him before the movie was even out. And even after it did well there was too much to sell.
It felt like he had more merch than any particular design of the Joker, since a lot of Joker stuff are specific takes or one off designs.
>>
>>155109351
The most hated Joker is the one where the actor is actually mentally ill
>>
>>155109351
I kinda liked him. I think Jared Leto gets too much hate because we know too much about him. He's not a bad actor, though. He's just often in bad movies. He was great in Masters of the Universe, and people are still blaming that movie's failure on him instead of the fact it was a fucking Masters of the Universe movie in 2026, when he-man nostalgia has been dead for literal decades.
>>
Do you think a modernised version of the other crime lord characters could work? I guess Reeves's Penguin and Riddler are a decentish update of these characters, but what about Two-Face or Black Mask.

Fun fact, Ryan Gosling was originally the first guy they contacted for Joker but he declined because he didn’t want a long-term character commitment. The second person on the list was actually Mark Strong. This could have been the Joker.
>>
>>155110725
Chasing after Heath Ledger's fame and notoriety is a big part of why fans have gotten sick of Joker.
>>
I wonder if the new DCCU will survive long enough to introduce its own version of The Joker.
>>155110819
>Mark Strong
He's a good actor, but I can't see him as the Joker. Perhaps WB had a different interpretation of the character in mind for him back then?
>>
>>155109993
The problem, I think, is that the tattoos are too deliberate.
Joker at his core is a disfigured man who turned his appearance into a gimmick. The previous movies gave him a scarred mouth to sell the idea.
You throw tattoos into the mix and it looks like he's trying to hard to look scary.
>>
>>155111073
David Ayer loves various gang aesthetics, so I can imagine Mark Strong’s Joker being some buff Skinhead.
>>
>>155109993
> They just fucked up the look and got the single worst and most annoying person to play him.
Younger posters and people not into movies might not understand that Leto was fairly respected before Suicide Squad. He had a fairly popular band and his acting career was mostly character actor supporting roles where he was known for immersing himself in roles looking different no not drawing attention to himself as a person. Average people weren’t familiar with him that much but regular cinephiles would’ve appreciated him.
Suicide Squad was a one-two punch of WB attempting to market Lego’s method acting as something best level so they could ride off the stories of Heath Ledger’s method acting being so dangerous, and Leto having his ego inflated from this hype and putting him on a path to become a cult leader.
It’s pretty wild how much of a blow it was and he just doubled down
>>
I find it hard to criticise this version of the Joker when I know how much Warner Bros. interfered with the final cut of the movie against Ayer's wishes. The movie is pretty bad, but perhaps the original version would have been more palatable. One of my issues with it is how schizophrenic it feels, after all.
>>
>>155111212
I was also there when it happened. I only knew of Leto as a serious actor, sort of like Heath Ledger, but most of the stories people had heard about him were about him being a horrible asshole on set and sending his castmates rats and shit.
>>
>>155111376
All those stories about him doing actual harmful things to method act started with Suicide Squad. Before then all his method acting stories were just that he got really skinny or got really fat or he stopped having sex. Mainly because he didn’t really play villains before that. Just societal misfits and junkies. Well I guess Mark David Chapman was a bad guy
>>
Joker + Juggalo = Juggaloker.
>>
>>155110769
The lore behind it is also funny/stupid
>Joker was so sad about having to get a mouth full of implants after Batman busted all his teeth after he killed Robin that he had to get a tattoo expressing how he felt right on his forehead
>>
>>155110058
>"Purple Lamborghini Joker featuring Rick Ross"
If you were trying to describe Leto's Joker as derisively as possible to make him sound uncool compared to Ledger, you've failed spectacularly.

Leger's Joker was iconic because he made the character concept feel smart and smug, yet accessible in the way that appeals to normies. Before Leger's Joker, you didn't have droves of people saying "Hurrrr, the Joker is just like me, fr!", because nobody wanted to be the legit batshit insane Joker. They want to be the low-key Joker who's trying to prove something, because then they can pretend they have depth.

Leto was unironically doing us a favor by pushing the Joker back toward being a bombastic, obnoxious, unhinged prick who wants money and power. But audiences weren't ready for it. And the movie wasn't particularly good. Kind of a shame the DCEU wasn't allowed to grow more organically, because I think Leto's Joker would have been an excellent counterpart to grumpy, tired Batfleck.
>>
>>155111872
>I think Leto's Joker would have been an excellent counterpart to grumpy, tired Batfleck.
not sure if I agree with the rest of your assessments, but this is absolutely true. One of the biggest flaws in the Bale/Ledger dynamic is that they have zero fucking chemistry. One of the biggest appeals of Nolan's Batman was pushing toward a more "realistic" depiction of Gotham, but it made one of the most legendary comic book rivalries of all time feel likes so much less than the sum of its parts. Instead of "bat vigilante vs. clown kingpin", it was just "urban commando vs. uppity hobo".
>>
>>155111671
honestly this just comes off as a power move. At the end of the day, he knows he killed Batman's family while all Batman could do was bust his teeth out. Now, everytime they meet face to face, Joker literally has a sign on his forehead, grieving for his lost teeth, while Bats just carries on. Also the notion that he didn't think he was "Damaged" until he lost his teeth is also pretty funny.
>>
>>155111872
>Before Leger's Joker, you didn't have droves of people saying "Hurrrr, the Joker is just like me, fr!"
This was not true. Alan Moore's sad nihilistic Joker did it first.
>>
>>155111671
>Introduce Joker in a movie about criminals where he's pretty much is flash backs and all we know is he broke Harley's heart but he has all this lore that nobody knows about and then won't make another appearance until a 4 hour cut of Justice League
This was a huge problem with the Snyderverse
>>
>>155112011
Yes, but "droves of people" weren't saying it; just damaged comic book nerds. That Joker wasn't accessible because he was in an actual comic book, and most people don't read comics. Ledger's Joker basically repackaged Moore's Joker in a way that was for more accessible and appealing to an NPC. It was also generally understood that Moore's Joker was a fringe depiction of a slightly more lucid and arguably sympathetic Joker, and it was understood this wasn't his normal personality. Leger's Joker turned the one-off into the status quo.

And besides, most people who pointed to Moore's Joker and said "he's just like me" only did it because they were recommended to read The Killing Joke after they saw the Dark Knight. In the 90s, the Joker was just a completely different animal in the public eye.

Moore's Joker redefined the character in post-crisis continuity. They all followed that characterization.
It's true that the Burton movie and the animated series stuck more to his early golden age depictions and there was a bigger audience for those than comics.
>>
>>155109351
I just don't understand why Jared Leto continues to get major roles in these high budget productions. I mean he's famous enough to not be a cheap get, but he's apparently a terror on the set and is so mired in controversy that he generates bad buzz for any movie he's in, without fail, every single time.

The funny thing is he didn’t actually do any of those things. He gave Margot Robbie a rat she kept as a pet during production and then donated, and sent Will Smith a case of bullets as a gag gift. All those stories about dead rats, used condoms and “lights, camera, insanity” was just internet shitposting over Warner’s clear attempt to prop up his performance through viral marketing, and it developed a life of its own, to the point Viola Davis, who didn’t have any scenes of him, said she’d have her football quarterback husband beat Leto up if he sent her condoms or something.

Leto is actually super salty to this day about these stories and how much damage they did to his public image.

i think it being a clearly well done and professional job also fucks with it. even if it still would look dumb, it at least being a prison grade tier tattoo makes a lot more sense, something that could be done in 5 minutes impulsively. otherwise you have to seriously consider that the joker, sat there for, completely still for however many hours to get such perfect work. for someone whose apparently so "crazy and unstable" as to warrant a tattoo saying damaged right on their face. his outfit, the work and time and attention to detail doesnt match the "persona" of someone willing to do something that dumb.

its a "born to lose" face tattoo on someone who apparently, has done a lot of winning.

that and its just something that would work better in a comic. i bet you could find the right artist to make letos version look totally fine, in a hyper stylized setting. people in spandex underwear looks okay in comic books, dumb in real life. they just made him TOO true to a comic booky aesthetic

It also doesn't help that the movie's mag-dumping into its own foot at every possible opportunity. You've got the first hour of a two and a half hour movie of the male lead being a cringey beta basedaboi (and we're told that's a good thing!) and in the rest you've got the movie making jokes about its premise at all times. At one point one of the characters says "Ram Man! Give them head!" and there's a beat where everyone in the scene acknowledges that was some cringe faggot shit to say. The key jangling of having Dolph there is a confusing mess that doesn't do anything.

One of my least favorite things about Ledger's Joker was the lack of vanity and theatricality. They really made a conscious effort to move back toward that while reframing his gangster roots in a modern cultural context.

Joker's a supervillain. He knows how to keep himself from getting killed in a defensive action, and probably puts himself in a position where Batman has to take him in to push his buttons.

Phoenix's Joker fundamentally only really works in a world without Batman. He's not really a "supervillain", he's just a guy. He was always gonna rot in jail or die or whatever long before a Batman could even surface.
>>
>>155130080
Maybe if we use a traditional batman but I always assumed a Phoenix Joker would have a Batman fitting his outsider type of persona and they just ignored the challenge by making the 2nd movie a mockery of his character.
>>
>>155130113
No. Phoenix doesn't have the ability to become a long-term supervillain. He's not especially smart or gifted, he just made a scene and killed a guy live on television. He's fundamentally not capable of being a true "supervillain" for a prolonged period of time. Plus he'll be in like his 60s by the time Bruce could even become Batman.

>Women felt in love with Leto Joker
>Tons and tons of merchandise sold around Leto Joker
They were probably thinking on making money. It worked

He's actually the best movie Joker of all time in my opinion.
The only one I can imagine being a real person.
He's kind of like me internally except he's brave enough to act it out.
>>
>>155113734
>when new material is available
Did you make those images before the movie was released?
>>
>>155131845
Yup, i've ages old pics. Tons of dumb shit, including that tats saga. That was hilarious. The cast gave each other's tattoos thinking this was going to be something monumental like Lord of the Rings.
>>
You can see in some of their faces that they know this is a terrible mistake.

Everything surrounding this movie was weird and meme worthy.

they did all this but couldnt be bothered to make sure each knife was different? that REALLY annoys me as well. that huge ring has all of two types of knives, which means what, he raided two different steak houses and took ALL their steak knives?

actually thats kinda funny.
>the...the suspect broke in and took just the steak knives of the the steak house. not the money, or anything. just the steak knives. no one could eat steak
okay, like that other anon im sorta starting to like this version of the joker, in a shitposty meme sorta way

Imagining the Joker picking out tattoos in a shop is inherently disarming and unscary.
>>
>>155110745
I mean 2 face was in the dark night
>>
>>155126819
Why? His makeup is retarded and his acting and writing are by far the worst by a country mile.
>>
>>155130568
You have to be legitimately retarded if you think gangbanger Joker is somehow a better idea than whatever the Batman did.
>>
>>155132017
I mean, this came out before the bubble popped. BvS hadn't come out yet but there was a shitload of hype, Age of Ultron made a shitload of money, they're all in a movie with Will fucking Smith. As was pointed out earlier, Jared Leto was actually respected in the industry at this time, the last movie he was in was Dallas Buyer's Club, which he won an academy award for. It's also important to remember that the movie they shot definitely wasn't the movie we ended up getting (not that I think Ayers potential cut would have been any better, who really knows.) Speaking of Ayer, he was also coming off a bunch of critical successes himself.

They probably thought this was a lay-up, there was no reason to think Suicide Squad wouldn't have been the next Guardians of the Galaxy (which was *obviously* what they were going for). I bet they had a lot of fun making the movie too, however it actually came out. It's weird to think about that period of time.

The problem with Leto's Joker is primarily that he comes off as someone most interested in convincing other people that he's very crazy. It seems to me a real madman should believe he is sane and everyone else is mad.
>>
>>155136068
Also one of his first line was "why don't you want to fuck my girlfriend" so he kinda came off as a cuck
>>
>>155136068
indeed Ledger's version is visibly seething when he's called crazy and quietly retorts he is not
and he's not the only rendition of Joker to insist his madness is real sanity

how about this. throw some stitches all around the tattoos, badly done, infected. he didnt sit around and get a tattoo, he just found someone with a tattoo he liked, and cut the fucking guys skin off and stitched it onto himself. THAT would justify the "high quality/high effort tattoos", and the damaged text being so perfect. he saw someones tattoo saying some poetry shit like "my soul is damaged, but i get back up" and just cut the "damaged" part out and put it on his face because YOLO.
and instead of very high effort joker smile on his wrist/thumb region, its just someones actual fucking face, mexican cartel style, someones actual lips and stitched right onto his wrist. they already wanted to go the mexican cartel angle, this would be it.

building on that, i remember they raided some cartel boss/leaders house and found a shitload of justin beiber merchandise and like, proper huge paintings of beiber in there. its weird to think of some cold blooded dude who plucks peoples eyeballs out for fun being into that, but if you DO come across someone who IS a cartel leader AND is into that shit, you know hes gotta be so fucking nuts and scary to be around.

imagine THAT job. you gotta brutally torture some informants for hours, pulling their teeth out and making a stew out of their guts, but sing along to "baby baby" if the boss starts singing it out loud himself

not gonna edit my post, but i checked and they found the beiber stuff in some brazillian drug lords house. same thing, almost. (allegedly).

>>155136550
now im wondering if its just executive meddling.
>hes gonna have someones fucking FACE stitched onto his hand to do that smile!
>a face? oof, thats not pg-13, maybe a tattoo?
>b-....that sorta deflates the whole thing, and is sorta la-
>DO IT or your budgets cut by 85%

i think we need to consider that everything of this movie that seems goofy and absurd, is just neutered versions of something more edgy but actually appropriate. they were building on the extremely edgy serious version of ledgers joker, now i DO wonder if the original cut its a LOT more violent and horrific, juxtaposed against some really weirdly non-violent weird stuff.

Yeah, Suicide Squad was made during DC's EDGY phase, so it makes sense for that to have been an attempt at depicting a modern-day Gangster Joker
>>

Maybe the cast did bond filming, they seemed genuine friends

He's actually good in this film, frustratingly so. Totally nails Skeletor being theatrical and bombastic but also pathetic and childish.

i like how in his original origin he's just like
>well shit i guess the joke's on me!
