Here's my concept.Small group of friends, 4 or 5, are on a road trip or flight on a small plane, point is they're all in the same thing. Some mistake the driver (the overall protag) does causes the thing to crash. Split second before it strikes whatever's going to destroy them, everything seems to stop. Once they stop screaming, they then see a person dressed like the stereotypical grim reaper nearby. They have a moment of 'wait, you can see me?'. Reaper character pulls the group out of the vehicle (visually like pulling their souls out of their bodies ala Ghost) and explains to them that by dint of luck, they're going to be his replacements. Essentially, the position goes to a new person every once in a while, roughly matched with population. Used to be for almost 50k years. Then 10k. Gradually shortening to the point where he's only been reaping since the Black Plague kicked off. Now it's to the point where it's too much for one reaper, hence the group being chosen. Act 1 finishes with them choosing how they'll look, most of them opting for culturally-specific depictions of death personifications (Anubis, Valkyrie, etc.) but with the protag not choosing yet, being empathetic and not wanting to do it at all. Act 2 has them learning about what reaping entails, fun/funny/poignant shenanigans, with the protag learning about the necessity of death as part of life. Antagonist friend shows they like the job a little too much, supporting cast establishing some neat powers to use for later as Chekov's Guns or to establish the rules of reaping, etc. Act finishes with the group learning that the protag was responsible for the accident.Act 3 starts with antagonist friend snapping and starting to put in motion convenient deaths that would trigger nuclear armageddon. Original reaper tries to stop him, gets backstabbed, has his scythe stolen. Might 'survive' but is weakened, might die, depends on the pathos. 1/2
>>155123478Friends have varyingly decided to either forgive the protag or angrily join the antag, not seeing or not in the moment realizing his ultimate goal. Antag uses the protag's reluctance to admit their mistake as a way to obfuscate them pointing out antag's plot. It's at this point protag has to reap the original reaper, is given final advice before protag has to give the original a The Boss-style goodbye. One thing about the designs is that the character's 'scythes' change shape based on their form/personality. The valkyrie gets a viking sword, the Anubis gets a khopesh, etc. The protag might have been a doctor or nurse, and theirs is an unassuming scalpel, signifying their reluctance to take on the role. When antag stole the original's scythe, it starts to look like a nightmare-fuel rifle integrating his original weapon. Back to the story, protag regains the trust of their friends, convinces the wayward ones to see the truth (or they get backstabbed, too) and the protag has a final duel, with this interspersed with a subplot about some lunatic dictator with nukes, and a special forces team tasked with putting him out, representing antag and protag. Big fight, the team gets whittled down as the protag takes hits from the antag, physically and psychologically. Protag gets their second wind, scalpel keeps most of its shape, but takes on elements of the original's scythe, showing their full arc. Antag is defeated as dictator takes a bowie to the head by the mortally wounded team lead. Nuke goes off, but wasn't launched, thus not triggering WW3. Protag and friends sees team lead in the flash that turns the entire scene white. Team lead sees protag. Fade to black.Fin.
