AOSTH was originally a prequel to SATAM, with Robotnik's coup in the latter being a recent event and Sonic having just met Sally. The Blast for the Past episode threw this out however.

So there were some lore and new characters writers could play with. It wasn't just Sonic, Tails and Eggman. And it was BEFORE all the later games added characters people generally dislike like Chip, Mephiles etc.It came at just the right time, when the franchise was at the all-time high

Sonic X is just a baby show for babies. There's nothing offensive about it but I have a difficult time believing there's a lot of people over 10 years of age that can tolerate watching it. Which I find a little strange when you consider when Sonic was first created, it was marketed as a thing for kids who outgrew cutesy Mario stuff. But then you get cartoons like Sonic X which are clearly aimed at children even younger than Mario's toddler cartoons. It never made sense to me. Sonic should be for 10-13 year olds, not 3-7 year olds.
