I like how Japanese wikipedia has american cartoons under the "Anime" category
So...they're French?
>>155130643that's because anime is short for animation. we call Japanese stuff by that name for the same reason we call fancy French cooking 'cuisine' or a really nice Italian beachfront property a 'riviera'done. next thread
>>155130643ANIME IS THE JAPANESE TERM FOR ANIMATION IN GENERAL, THEY MAKE NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN LOCATION OF ORIGIN.>>155131169WHILE THE EXACT ORIGINS OF THE TERM "ANIME" IS DISPUTED, ONE SUCH EXPLANATION IS THAT IT IS DERIVED FROM THE FRENCH TERM "DESSIN ANIMÉ", ALTHOUGH ANOTHER CLAIMS IT IS A CONTRACTION OF HOW ONE WRITES THE ENGLISH WORD "ANIMATION" IN KATAKANA. ANIME ITSELF WAS REFERRED TO AS "JAPANIMATION" IN THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING WORLD UNTIL THE 1990S.
