So...they're French?

that's because anime is short for animation. we call Japanese stuff by that name for the same reason we call fancy French cooking 'cuisine' or a really nice Italian beachfront property a 'riviera'

ANIME IS THE JAPANESE TERM FOR ANIMATION IN GENERAL, THEY MAKE NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN LOCATION OF ORIGIN.

WHILE THE EXACT ORIGINS OF THE TERM "ANIME" IS DISPUTED, ONE SUCH EXPLANATION IS THAT IT IS DERIVED FROM THE FRENCH TERM "DESSIN ANIMÉ", ALTHOUGH ANOTHER CLAIMS IT IS A CONTRACTION OF HOW ONE WRITES THE ENGLISH WORD "ANIMATION" IN KATAKANA. ANIME ITSELF WAS REFERRED TO AS "JAPANIMATION" IN THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING WORLD UNTIL THE 1990S.
