I wish marvel didn't do their shitty ass current ultimate universe cause it's dog shit but the concept can work they just suck as writing. But in terms of just increasing readership I think the format is holding comics back. People under 30 aren't going to the comic book shop every week to pick up their weekly issues. It's too expensive and the value proposition of comic books isn't there. Graphic novel/trade paper back volumes that are written by a long term writer + artist combo priced aggressively would be an easy sell to newer generations. Longer form story telling with easy to follow story progression and consistency in terms of writing/characterizations and art would probably go a long way to claiming back some of the western readership from manga.
