What made (atleast in america) Little Bear more popular than other Nick Jr shows like Rupert, Franklin, Kipper, Busy World of Richard Scarry, Allegra's Window, Gullah Gullah Island and Maisy? For a time, it was Nick Jr's second most popular show distantly behind Blue's Clues.

Honestly, I think it's because it perfectly captured the vibe of early childhood. There wasn't much conflict in it (even shows like Franklin and Rupert and Busy World had more conflict) but it was so beautiful and cozy and it was probably really relatable to toddlers. It also always came on right before Blue's Clues so that probably helped as well.

How can you tell it was more popular tho? I did enjoy a lot of the shows anyway. They are like Steven Universe's townie episodes. It's all vibes

It was on Nick Jr (including reruns) for 7 years (1995-2002) and no, I wasn't counting the Nick Jr channel. It also aired twice every weekday for about a good four years. It stopped airing on Nick Jr around the same time Franklin did (Franklin started airing on Nick Jr in america in January 1999).

When it comes to the others

Allegra's Window: October 1994 to January 1999
Gullah Gullah Island: October 1994 to June 2000
Busy World of Richard Scarry: July 1995 to April 2000
Rupert: September 1995 to November 1998
Kipper and Maisy: February 1999 to June 2001

I was 10 when this came out, so it wasn't something I'd actually watch, but I can tell you that I appreciated how realistically the animals were drawn. it reminded me of disney movies like the Fox and the Hound, while most cartoons were just hurr durr care bears lookin kinda shit. it's VERY rare for a cartoon bear to look like a bear. apes too, apes never get rendered right, but that's not relevant here.

You’re forgetting about Little Bill. Why don’t they do reruns of that show anymore

Rup just so happened to be in the right place at the right time. I did always find the pacemaker subplot to be kind of weird. Not sure I ever grew out of it.

I still love the upbeat remixed theme song he got in America

One thing I find wild about this show was that Billie Mae Richards was a voice on it.

Rupert had its own rogues gallery of villains which was cool for a preschool show.

In leafland, Rupert was on TV for decades and Franklin had a lot of merch.

I remember hearing how Franklin was incredibly popular in leafland to the point of having 78 episodes and quite a couple of movies.

Maurice Sendak was very politically well connected and the show got government gibs.
