To people who prefer DC to Marvel or vice versa, why do you prefer one over the other?
>>155150284I prefer "the tone" of the universe more, if that makes sense.
DC is just kind of comfort reading to me, like a pair of well worn tennis shoes. I grew up reading it and really didn't start actively seeking out Marvel until I was in my 20s (even then, I was mostly reading the older stuff like Howard The Duck, Captain America, Excalibur and New Warriors)Reading DC now just takes me back to being a kid and loving and enjoying comics for the first time. A lot of what I read then was kid-centric like DC's Cartoon Network books, Bongo comics, and Marvel's STAR line
>>155150284DC has the better waifus imo
>>155150284Marvel just grabbed me at a time where they had more media presence, so I naturally gravitated to it more since it was the strongest at the zeitgeist (seeing the first Avengers film at 9 years old was the coolest shit ever). Once I started reading the comics, it just felt like a more coherent universe than what I was able to grasp DC was, and the stories just spoke more to me. Of course there's DC characters and comics that I really enjoy, but I've never been able to "get it" like I've done with the Marvel universe.
>>155150284For me, the answer is simple. DC has Legacy. My favorite book from DC is Starman by James Robinson. That book is built upon all the good work of other creators who gave a unique twist to a character from the 40s. He's an alien, he's a prince, he's an adverage superhero. The fact that all of these interuptations are accepted and (mostly) respected is one of the biggest draws to DC for me. There's a sense of continuity of time. It might be illusionary, but its done better then Marvel in my opinion. It's why I love characters like Wesley Dodds because I know their legacy is passed on and continues into the modern day. We see it start in Mystery Theater, die in Starman, and carried on in Sandy through JSA.Same goes for characters like Wally West. Once Dan Didio left, Wally was almost instantly reinstalled as The Flash proper with 2 Flash's now being the norm. People can have both.To me, Marvel feels like it's lacking thart Legacy factor. Sure, its more simple to understand. Spider-man is Peter Parker, easy. But it feels like the illusion of progress is way clearer then at DC. Sure, Dick can be Batman, but its been made clear Dick wants his own thing. Daredevil for a while had this great sense of progress from the Bendis run to the Zdarsky run. But now it feels like he's back to the usual. His character development through the Zdarsky run undone by the Ahmed run. It's another reason why I love the Playstation Spider-Man games because there's a sense of passing the torch to Miles. Peter's ready to move on and be more of a mentor. Something his comic version will never be.Please feel free to critique this all you want.
>>155150284Marvel used to have more compelling characters and continuity, imo. They’ve squandered that over the years, of course, but I cannot express how fucking cool it was to read someone’s book, read someone else’s book from around the same time period, and be able to track exactly who was where and doing what at that given time period. It made the heroes feel real more than any character flaws could.I also tend to prefer their costumes, but that’s purely shallow lol. Can’t beat Spidey for an A-lister, and the Avengers look more distinct than the JL to me.
>>155150284DC - Pinup girlsMarvel - Deeper Characters
>>155150384Marvel stopped being something I actively followed for a long time mostly because, like yourself, I was frustrated with the directions a lot of the characters were going. Namely CapI've been a fan of Captain America since I was 8 and read the entirety of his first run (60's thru 90s). So many runs now just want to be or are trying to ape the success of Brubaker that it's kind of nauseastingI think the last time I had legit fun with the book was in 2022 with Symbol Of Truth and Sentinel Of Liberty
>>155150284I prefer DC because it has better comics.
>>155150308I'm sure it would if you specified which universe.
>>155150284Dc feels more connected in a realistic wayIts not that everyone knows everyone but the places people hang around connect and intersectThink of it like roads connecting small towns and that way you have a stateIn marvel cpt america knows like everyone to some degree and everything happens in one city, thats just too unrealistic and takes you outNot to mention that theres too much mutie bullshit and gay shit thats in your faceOnly marvel book that I tend to enjoy is punisher otherwise I gotta look for consensusPlus dc has that nice warm vibe to itAlso batmanLuv me batman even if last 10 years were dogshitIts not as bad as spidermanNothing is that badBut my go to comics verse ?Energon universe,it might be uneven but it all fits and works together like a nicely assembled car
>>155150465I forgot about absoluteFUCKING BIG TRUCK AND GIGABANE ACTIVATE MY ALMONDSTHANK YOU BIG CHEEKS DARKSEID
>>155150284I grew up reading primarily Spider-man and Batman (when I could get comics), so honestly I really have a soft-spot for both. But these days I'm definitely preferring DC because they seemed to be more focused on trying to tell interesting stories (even when they fail the attempt is at least made), as opposed to Marvel who seem to be constantly trying to find new ways to piss off their fanbase. Also DC has had pretty consistently good art while Marvel's art has been shit since about 2010.
>>155150461I wanted it to be vague but I mean DC, I feel like Marvel in general tries to be too hard to be, I dunno if "political" is the right word, but may topical, and I also see characters being assholes to each others more often than not.Like, DC events tend to be heroes fighting villains, Marvel events from what I've seen are usually about some drama among the heroes themselves, which I can see the appeal of, but I also kinda just prefer seeing villains being the main antagonistic force instead of the relationships between the heroes. Also, I like the DC designs better, certain Marvel costumes don't feel "super-heroey" enough to me, if that makes sense, many of them could use big marketable logos in their outfits. Also also, I like how DC has a bunch of fictional cities for their heroes, while Marvel mostly just has everyone in New York.
>>155150495>instead of the relationships between the heroesMaybe to expand on this, I specifically meant that I don't really like seeing the heroes fight each other so much. It's not like DC heroes don't fight each other, in fact, their inner drama is a big part of Infinite Crisis, but it's not THE main conflict, Alexander Luthor Jr. and Superboy Prime are. Meanwhile in Marvel you have stuff like Civil War where the story literally is just happening because certain heroes don't agree on how to respond to a new law, so they make it everyone's problem.
>>155150284Thor and Hulk are simply SOVL and my favorite characters.
>>155150284I have New York fatigue, so I prefer DC Comics because its world is more fantastic or magic. DC world feel more impossible than the marvel one. But I like both, but after rading both of them during 18 years: I will stick to DC Comicsalso mandatory:>DC comics are like gods among humans and behaving/feeling like humans.>Marvel comcis are like humans with gods powers with human problems
>>155150531I love Thor, but MAN have I never been able to find a run that triggered the same euphoria as Kirby
>>155150556>>DC comics are like gods among humans and behaving/feeling like humans.>>Marvel comcis are like humans with gods powers with human problemsFamous god Bruce Wayne and human Thor.
>>155150614Thor has less plot armor than BruceBruce has literally fought Darkseid and did so many inhuman feats despite being "human"
>>155150651Missed The Point Award
>>155150614Exceptions don't underminde the general trend. It's like an observation made where Marvel leans more into sci-fi than DC; sure, they also have magic/fantasy characters, but it doesn't take away from the fact that, as a whole, the Marvel universe tends to be more science based.
Batman is my first superhero and DC has New Gods and the Green Lantern corp.
>>155150284DC was several decades ahead of Marvel in sheer shiteating, I can never respect the company and audience that spawned hero-families, cheered for characters getting killed off and had a revolving door of legacies not in the aughts with an army of redditors, but in the fucking 70s.
