Previously, the Academy students were trapped in the Infinite Mansion with two of the Serpent's generals who had possessed Absorbing Man and Titania. Nothing the kids did seemed to stop them and Absorbing Man found the Pym Particle generator, absoring its essence and using it to begin causing the mansion to grow which would destroy an entire city if it emerged in the normal dimension. With no choice, Finesse decided they needed to destroy the mansion but two people needed to stay behind as sacrifices: one to distract the villains and one to engage the self-destruct sequence.Finesse, Hazmat and Mettle all decided to stay behind but Pym and the other faculty were able to find the mansion and get the kids out just before it blew up. With that, Absorbing Man and Titania decided to join the other generals for the final battle and left. After everything that had happened, Veil decided she wanted no more of being a superhero and quit, deciding to go with Jeremy Briggs hoping to do actual good. Justice and Speedball also decided to leave. What was left of the Academy relocated to the old West Coast Avengers compound in California, expanding the student body by opening its doors to any young hero who wanted to learn from the Avengers.Today is Avengers Academy #21-24.Previous >>155166993

Yep, this is that issue.
At least this is one of those things that makes plenty of sense when you take previous issues into account. The most blatant is him noping out of sleeping with Veil when she was coming onto him despite that his character up to that point had been a womanizer, and that's fairly early on.
Hybrid is an old Rom villain whose thing is that he wants to breed women. Specifically mutie women.

For some reason, I keep thinking of some of the main cast in terms of older characters. With him intentionally brining up Living Lightning, Striker feels like trying to do "Homosexual Electrical" as a serious character instead of Dan Slott making a joke with an expendable character for GLA (Wiccan is the other way around where he is all in on being gay, but lightning is just a misdirection of his main abilities). Hazmat's origin is poisoning her boyfriend, and is actually Asian-American while Scorpion was just born in Madripoor and ended up white by parentage reveals.Finesse is another possibly autistic character that seems to be closer than the weird conflated with other things depictions of the 20th century, but her setup still has plausible deniability. No comment on her actual abilities or weapons of choice.There are a few other characters Mettle and Veil feel similar to as well.I don't think this was intentional for the most part and I am just reading into things that are not there.

Oh look, it's the Initiative OCs (and Prodigy). This is the last we'll be seeing of them in this series.
Also it's storming pretty bad where I am so if I disappear in the middle of an issue it probably means the power got knocked out.
I assume this was building up to a future story after the Briggs stuff but the book getting cancelled meant it never happened.
Issue 27The Runaways are back.
Yeah, Chase is just randomly better after the end of the previous series. The Runaways randomly showed up for a story in the Daken series and it was basically just handwaved as an "I got better" type of deal. Outside of Old Lace's death, it basically seems like the Immonen story is pseudo-retconned in that it's basically completely ignored.And this story exists to undo Old Lace's death anyway effectively rendering Immonen's run completely pointless.
The Karolina/Julie relationship starts which will last until being completely derailed by Rowell to push her fanon Karolina/Nico ship.
