If I had a guess...Around that time the more popular Nick cartoons were boy centric (male MC, or mainly male character focus) I remember being younger and watching Nick over Disney as it felt like Disney was beginning to pander more to a female audience and as a kid I cared much more about gender labeling. It might be a stretch but I think just having a female lead was enough to make the show less successful, and it wouldn't gain it real cult popularity until much later when those same young boys grew up to be gooner men.
