No not the HBO show, I want to talk about actual Lantern stuff. Comics, the cartoon (which I unfortunately never checked out), the emotional spectrum, all of it. From Alan Scott to Jessica Cruz, what Green Lanterns do you enjoy reading/seeing? What are some of your favorite background alien GLs (or other corps members)?

How is the current run? I sort of dropped off around when the Galactic Government run by shapeshifters used the source lantern and all the corps formed one organization.
>>

>which I unfortunately never checked out
You should, it's pretty good.
>>
I'm really enjoying the HBO show.
>>
>>155208362
Honest question; how and why? I hate mystery box formats, and it feels like they throw comic stuff at the fans begrudgingly just to try and keep them around.
>>
Don't mind me just the best green lantern passing by.

What I like about Green Lantern comics is everyone can practically find a Lantern that clicks with them.
>Hal, the hotshot who can sometimes be a goof but has a will like no other
>John, the stick up his ass by the book guy who has his moments to cut loose/get creative
>Guy, the brash but lovable tough guy
>Kyle, the artist (okay he's my least favorite)
>Jess, the nervous yet adorable nerd doing her best

Simon is......Well he likes cars

The only Green Lantern I ever read was Tangent and Green Lantern Dark and I kind of really enjoyed it. Tangent is basically Green Lantern Tales from the Crypt and Elvira where she revives people from the dead to settle their spirits so they can lass on. Dark is like a drunk bitch in a dark fantasy zombie apocalypse set after Tangent played straight. I really liked the dark fantasy/magic angle in all of this.

I have been meaning to read real Green Lantern stuff but I haven't had time yet.

My recommended reading list (I'll put some stuff as optional if you dont want to read TONS, but its all so worth it for the payoff):

Emerald Dawn
Emerald Twilight
Zero Hour: Crisis in Time
Final Night
Green Arrow Quiver (very optional)
Green Lantern Rebirth
Followed by the rest of Geoff Johns's GL run and the Green Lanter Corps book that was running along side it (sorry dont recall who was writing). But if you dont want to read the whole thing, at least read:
Sinestro Corps War
Maybe go to Blackest Night but you'll miss a bunch of stuff if you dont read what's in between.

Animated Movies:
GL First Flight
GL Emerald Warriors

Shows:
GL Animated Show
Justice League + JL Unlimited - John Stewart (per usual) is a boring ass stick in the mud. But the rest of the show is so great its fine, and there are some GL centered episodes in there that are great.

What? It is a mystery box. The problem is that retards like Mauler and Drinker have pushed that term to its breaking point. JJ Abrams isn't bad because he withholds information. He's bad because he doesn't have the information he's withholding planned out. This leads to unsatisfactory answers.

I always found it funny at how the green lantern oath rhymes. When the guardians "wrote" the oath in their alien language, did they purposely make it rhyme and made sure that it kept the rhyming across all alien languages? Or is it just a coincidence that it rhymes in english?

Silver Age GL had so much potential to be an amazing books because it has so many glimmers of great and genuinely interesting science fiction concepts, but more than half of it is Hal running around stopping petty thugs

>Also am I the only one who legit detests O'Neil's run? I just utterly hated his characterization of Hal as a bumbling idiot so much that I couldn't be bothered to read any more
Lanterns' biggest defenders point to O'Neil's run as evidence that Green Lantern is supposed to be lame and boring and low level. And given that the high viewer count hasn't actually translated to more sales, expect more people to repeat how important O'Neil's run was.

Sure. Ive been reading the silver age runs of Green Lantern, Flash and Justice League, and GL is definitely the least bad one, and i do like how theres actually world building in It. The JL on the other hand is awful, and its funny how Hal's ring can do literally, and I mean literally anything. I guess Gardner Fox never bothered to learn how his powers actually work. On that note, whats the consensus on the Dennis Oneil run? I'm looking forward to reading it since I bought the Absolute hardcover.

>>
>>155221706
I think my favorite one is where Hal turns himself into a robot to breathe the toxic air of some villain's hideout. I legit like Silver Age Flash, it has a bit more character than most of DC's output at the time where most of the MCs were white bread as hell with little personality beyond being able to do incredible things

>On that note, whats the consensus on the Dennis Oneil run? I'm looking forward to reading it since I bought the Absolute hardcover.
To DC Comics, O'Neil's and Neal Adams' run, what is Hard Travelin' Heroes, was a watershed moment in comics for tackling real-world issues like racism and drug addiction. But they never make mention of O'Neil's run AFTER HTH because HTH was a flop run and they dump the social issues aspect to actually have Hal Jordan do shit in outer space. Because it's Denny O'Neil, the man who basically made Batman what he is now, they treat it as important to the GL mythos as Johns' run, which is a load of shit because what made Johns' run so good was that it powerwashed the stank of O'Neil and Adams' run off Hal.
To people who have never read Green Lantern, they treat it like it was a watershed moment in comics for tackling real-world issues like racism and drug addiction and use it as a defense of having Lanterns taking a fat shit on the premise of Green Lantern.
To people who actually read Green Lantern, O'Neil's run is known as being really dogshit since Hal Jordan is turned into a bumbling, socially unaware conservative stand-in who has to get corrected by the cooler, loudly liberal Green Arrow, with pic in particular being the triumph of what Denny and Adams set out to do.

>Silver Age GL
I agree. Though it has a certain Silver Age charm to it. Also it's funny to me that as much as it's considered a herald of the Silver Age alongside Flash, it's the title that most closely follows the original formula (fighting common thugs, getting knocked out for drama.)

>Kyle's run is pretty rocky and I almost kind of lost interest in the book (mainly due to all the tie-ins) but coaxed myself to continue and honestly, it's probably fantastic in my opinion
I'm admittedly biased, but I'm glad you stuck through it and gave it an honest shot. Though personally I feel the post-Ion issues were harder to get through than the tie-ins. At least when the tie-ins focused on fun interactions between Kyle and other characters.

>Also am I the only one who legit detests O'Neil's run?
You're definitely not alone there. For all it's historical importance, it's painfully clear O'Neil was much more comfortable writing Ollie and street level dramas than Hal and his sci-fi adventures.

At first you read it and realize the Ron Marz run is actually pretty good.
Then you read it a second time with new Green Lantern knowledge and realize, actually, there is something seriously off about the Ron Marz run.
Then after reading it a third time with even more Green Lantern knowledge, you realize the Ron Marz run got kneecapped by the same editorial that fumbled Green Lantern during the first half of the 90s, and that the potential for peak was there before they snuffed it out.

It would had been fine if those other Lanterns also didn't have an entire Corps behind them. The Lanterns reducing DC Cosmic to a bunch of Rainbow Lanterns cheapen DC Cosmic and ultimately cheapen the the Green Lantern brand.

Him projecting himself as a green lantern to stop Hal from merging with the white light, proceeding to do it himself (in his old green lantern outfit) and then declaring himself the savior of the universe is kinda sad.
Johns seemed to write him as a misguided anti-villain that wanted love and truth.

Reign of the Supermen/ Emerald Twilight
Green Lantern Rebirth
Sinestro Corps

Also it is great to listen to Pendulum while reading them.

Barry really is a continuity parasite, though. There's no excuse for why Barry is taking up panel space in fucking 2026.

Sinestro, Black Adamm and in some cases arguably Doctor Doom are anti-villains who genuinely think they're the heroes of their own stories, trying to make the world "right" by horrible means. That's what makes Sinestro complex and interesting; he believes his sins and the ends will justify the means. He lacks self-awareness that he basically turned into a space dictator for his home planet, and rationalizes that recruiting space serial killers and monsters is okay because "He's keeping them in check".

Sinestro uses the yellow light of fear not just because he believes fear is an effective weapon to discourage evil/crimes, but it is also fueled by his own fears he tries so hard to hide. He fears that he is wrong, he fears failure, and he fears everything he has done will all be for nothing

I can't tell if I like or hate the HBO show yet. This silly mystery box format holds the audience hostage, with no guarantee of payoff. I want to see actual Manhunters in robot form, actual Red Lantern Corp members with uniforms and alien faces. Not only that, I actually want to see Hal suit up for a fight

Red Lantern's Zero Issue might be one of my favorite "one and done" stories of all time. Love the idea of integrating cosmic horror into Lantern lore

But yeah, that many books did seem a bit needlessly excessive and I say that as someone who's deeply passionate about the franchise

File: Parallax ref.jpg (718 KB, 1041x1600)

There's a really good issue of Superman (Tomasi run) where Parallax flees from Sinestro, and tries to farm fear from children and ultimately possess Superman as a new host because it's afraid of being tormented any further by Thaal. Superman recognizes that the entity is mostly all show, trying to scare off enemies, and legit tries to get it somewhere where it can live in peace
>>
>>155234044
It's a relatively common opinion that those have, even though adding different colored Lantern Corps is arguably one of the reasons GL became almost as big as Batman and Superman for a while.
>>
>>155234088
The sample who don't realize that Hal Jordan returned for a reason...

>>155234088
>No, you don't understanding, adding stupid, shitty things to the book made it really popular with people who weren't interested in the book back when you liked it, so you *have* to like it now!

I'm beginning to think that Green Lantern is just something that's better in concept than execution
>>
>>155234208
Well, I think it's neat, it's one of those things I'm actually surprised wasn't introduced earlier.
[Color] Lanterns definitely feels like something that would've introduced back in like the Silver Age or something.

>>
>>155234455

>>
>>155234455
If they work as villains, they could work without all the stupid fucking baggage of "actually, the green lantern corps isn't something unique, and there are half a dozen other lantern corps with different colors that relate to emotions! (Plz ignore that willpower isn't an emotion. I am very smart)"

It's a lame as fuck idea that cheapens the GLC.
>>
>>155208489
I'd say Englehart's run. It starts in a weird place, on the tail end of another run that introduces the Predator, but it also continues through the Crisis so it's the earliest modern canon run.
It introdues John as the "main" Green Lantern, has Guy and Katma being promoted from "oh yeah i forgot they exist" to major characters in the mythos.
You can ignore Green Lantern Corps though, unless you want to see Hal fuck an underage girl.

The 2011 movie. I've always been partial to the emblem ring over the signet style, and the movie version strikes the right balance between alien aesthetics and wearable jewelry.

Also I recently found out the replica of Guy Gardner's ring in Superman is totally inaccurate. Here's a pic of the actual prop for future reference.

Modern prestige shows are just like this because they only have a small idea that isnt long enough for an entire season. Then they stretch it out. And then it tales 2 to 3 years for a season 2 that bungles everything.

TV was better even in the lost era of retarded mystery boxes than whatever is going on now. Lost and superhero comics are both soap operas fuck it
>>
>>155235544
LOST was fucking trash and legit ruined television. Damon Lindeloff was on LOST for fuck sake, and has learned nothing
>>
>>155208528
I don't know if they've used him much since I stopped reading around Rebirth, but I really like Baz despite his initial impression. He does a great job playing the straight man (at least with him and RL Guy) and how fed up he is with superhero shit. Like him carrying a gun in case the ring fails, Batman guilting him into dropping it, then the ring fucking fails and he rages. Really good contrast to Jessica, too.
>>

what's weird is Hal Jordan's never really been a conservative character
they just saw military and assumed racist for some reason
but for some reason Guy is loved even though he's a fuckin redneck
>>
>>155236523
>they just saw military and assumed racist for some reason

It wasn't really "racist" so much as "ignorant on issues outside his sphere". He was never portrayed as being willfully malicious about it.

>but for some reason Guy is loved even though he's a fuckin redneck
I'm still trying to parse that myself, but people (especially women) really seem to love in-your-face types that stir shit and cause drama.

Yellow/Sinestro Corps was good and a logical extension of the brand.

The rest just came too fast and turned the entire GL setting into a pro wrestling universe with face/heel turns and characters switching factions.

I understand the sentiment, but I don't agree with that at all. I think it's been proven that Hal still has a lot of mileage as a character. He's reckless and sticks to his gut no matter what, he's got the redemption angle from his time as/possessed by Parallax, he's got the fish-out-of-water angle from spending more time in space than Earth, he's got pathos from longing to settle down but never being able to due to his duties and nature. It's evergreen (pun not intended), and the kind of thing that accrues interest just from him being around.

Barry doesn't have that same appeal, as his main hook in the modern era is having the perfect life before Thawne ruined it out of spite. Other than guilt over his mother's death and trying to put his life back together, it hasn't done much for Barry himself even if it's boosted Thawne to the A-list of supervillains. He's a great guy, but it's hard to sell that when you already have Clark and others with more notable traits around.
>>
they should make a mario party clone where you play as all the lantern corps

Guy is from Baltimore.

Not really, after Johns, all Corps that weren't Green, Yellow and sometimes Red basically faded into the background.
