I would like to believe Goodwin is learning empathy in real time here. The ‘Why try this hard if you aren’t even a Plat’ line is presumably the rhetoric of his own barracks, where the Coppers keep lines of Plats like dogs and are of course going to take the line “Pymary? Why? I have Plats for that.”But almost every character we see who got really into pymary found it liberating and exciting and enjoyable for its own sake. So I think even Goodwin can understand the cruelty of ‘what if you couldn’t do the best thing in the world and the thing you were the best at’. Will he live? IDK. But I think he has a chance to change if he does.

And the more he tries to put distance between himself and Miki and the assassins after him, the faster it takes effect.He's still incredibly impressive and put up a tremendous fight, especially since almost the entire thing was with him on drugs. But he lost as soon as those bolts hit and it definitely wasn't close.I think what you're remembering is either where he has her duck, when they aim at him and it misses, or where he warns her not to touch the poisoned bolt to remove it.

Those that continue to gain wealth beyond that are some of the least qualified to make decisions for the masses.
